This is a fairly long article. Some of you will have an allergic reaction to reading the news source but I think most will agree it's solid reporting on a relevant issue.
The NSA is building a *huge* data storage center outside of Salt Lake. They claim that it won't be used on US citizens. However, given the fact that even the IRS believes it can hack our electronics this claim should be viewed skeptically.
I'll post some excerpts to the article. However, it's worth reading the entire thing.

Personally, I'd be happy with this site if I knew the 4th Amendment was being faithfully and fully followed by all US agencies.

The bad news: The gov't plans on storing tons of electronic data.
The good news: They say it's only going to be used to track bad guys.
The bad news: Pretty much everyone can be considered potentially bad until they prove themselves otherwise.
The good news: Collecting this much data will allow gov't security agencies to quickly identify and act on legitimate threats.
The bad news: Unless they ever have to defrag the storage array...a process which STILL doesn't support multi-threading and will therefore probably take a decade or so.

Precisely. That's what's wrong with the current system of looting everyone's electronic data.
What's really confusing is how this is justified. The 4th amendment is quite easy to read and understand. And yet...lacking any good reason, the data continues to be accumulated. It's a colossal waste of time and money. The shame is that there are probably good, honest people being assigned to look at these phony theories. They want to believe the people telling them to investigate that their time is being put to good use. What a shame.
Ill put good money on the idea that theyre actually watching porn and playing angry birds.

Where I worked security breaches only occurred at the highest levels since they wasted zillions making
sure the working folk couldn't breach anything. The high level folk were the only ones who had time
and clearance to access animal porn and "Crush the Castle" (which is much better than angry tirds).

I suspect the line people aren't told the full story and routinely get the crap scared out of them for no good reason. I wonder how many times the local good guys get a call saying, "there's a D&D group attacking a gelatinous cube in the cafeteria! We think "gelatinous cube" is code for something awful. Stop them quickly! "
