I picked up Metro 2033 for $5 on Gamefly and I am loving it. I knew that part of the original Stalker team made it, but I didn't realize how close it was to Stalker both in look and thematically. The game even mentions "stalkers" in the narrative!
I guess it is almost inevitable that I am going to be pre-ordering the more ambitious sequel, Metro: Last Light. Here is the latest "Ranger Survival Guide" vid (Rangers are Metro's Stalkers):

What's ironically ironic about Metro 2033 is that it is the first game I bought on Steam, and I still haven't finished it! It's true. I read the book while I was on the boat and I loved it. So when it came time to buy the game, I saw it bundled with like 50 THQ games for $50, and since Metro was $50 by itself I created a Steam account and bought the whole bundle.
I saw the trailer for Last Light a few days ago and I have to have it. BUT, I can't possibly play it until I finish 2033, so this last week I've finally decided to play and finish 2033. I started a new game on "easy" mode. My previous game (about 30 minutes in) I had started on Ranger mode, not realizing that the Ranger modes were additional extra hard modes (I just thought it sounded cool). Since I generally am teh suxor at FPS-type games, I've elected to go tourist mode and play it through on easy. I'm more into it for the story than any type of exceptional challenge.
I'm at the part where you go onto the surface with Bourbon. Very spooky. I was thinking it was spooky before, but I have to say that there are some goosebump-worthy moments happening now.
I have no idea how long the main story takes. I'm curious to see how it plays out compared to the book, though.

Highly worth it in my opinion. The book really makes you think about how doomed humanity is. It's not a book that makes you feel good, sort of like

Do these Metro games use the same engine that the Stalker ones did?
The Stalker games gave me motion sickness from the way the ground was portrayed as moving, near the sides of the screen. :-[

Metro 2033 is about 6 times longer than The Road. I actually never even finished The Road- bored me to death. The movie was pretty depressing, though.

No. The visuals in 2033 were way beyond anything in the STALKER games.

I don't know if I'd say it was better, but Metro 2033 is a great book. Also a pretty sweet game.
The Road made me cry. The only book to ever have done that.

That's how I picked up 2033! I thought Last Light looked really cool, but thought I'd better play the first game first. Just happened that is was on sale for $5 at the time, so I grabbed it!

Definitely, but I think Stalker still beats this game for the creepy atmosphere aspects.

I played the game on challenging (or whatever the level after normal is) and I am up to seven hours so far. I hear that the entire game takes between 8-10 hours, so I must be near the end.

I started reading it on my Kindle, too. :) But I put it down because I figured I'd save it for when I pick up Last Light seeing how I suspect I am near the end of the game.

Not yet. I am planning on waiting for it to go on sale later in the year. Once I finish 2033, I plan on

The Road. I thought the writing was truly fantastic. The movie...eh. Reminded me less of the apocalyptic book and more of the depressionary tones of
The Grapes of Wrath.
