Title: Incredible Kerbal Space Program Trailer
Post by: Pinetree on April 27, 2013, 04:19:09 AM
A KSP player had made a brilliant unofficial trailer. Set this to 1080p, go to full-screen and enjoy. Just awesome:

Pretty amazing.  It manages to not only capture the magic of all of what the developers of KSP have accomplished, but also the wondrous achievements of mankind in space, as well.

Wish I could do anything as impressive as that. I've not even been able to achieve a stable orbit yet.

That was really good. Fun game too.

Was one of the little Kerbal dudes doing a hot re-entry in nothing but his space suit?

I'm interested in getting this but am unsure as to what the goal is. Do you have a research tree? Is it just sandbox where you do whatever you want?

I have only played sandbox. However, it appears to have components for a campaign. Availability of parts and costs are listed on all the items. Those may even work now but I haven't played around with them.

Believe it or not, the goal is to actually succeed. That trailer was making me feel pretty bad until they started showing clips of the crashes and burns.

It is truly difficult to explain the adrenalin rush as you watch your first successful launch. I kept waiting for it to fall apart. But as it climbed higher I started to realize I might actually succeed in getting the rocket into space. Then...I had to wait and see if they'd make it back! It was awesome.

yes, but the game is still a work in progress so I expect things to change.

I may, but before spending valuable gaming time on anything I wanted an idea of what it was. I may give it a shot. Thanks for the answers

One very cool thing is there is a ton of extra content made by folks for this game. Tons of new parts and even some very cool control systems and effects. It's fun to build crazy looking rockets and see if you can get them into space. You can also build planes and space planes (SSTO) . Also get the radio chatter add-on. It add to the atmosphere of the game.

Lol....yeah, I'm missing out on alot of games unfortunately. Real life interfering with fun time. I will pick it up. Sounds unique so WTH.

Great video, thanks for posting!  I think Squad should use it as an ad for KSP...

Ok. I bought it. So I have to questions: what do you use to control it? Joystick or mouse?
Second, what mods do I need? I know one made it easier to control or something?

A keyboard and mouse will probably suffice.

I couldn't make heads or tails of the game until I spent some time with some video tutorials. I need to see more, but after one or two you'll have the basics.

Keyboard and mouse have worked just fine for me, although you can use a joystick if you're so inclined.

Good point. I haven't played around with the plane development. A joystick might be just what you need for that.

I'm enjoying the Game a lot. Unfortunately, several kerbals have died in horrible fire balls or been left floating in orbit without enough fuel to initiate decent.

Question...I finally put kerbals in orbit and brought them down safely. What next? Satellite? What does it do? Why do I want one?

Edit: I see mapping satellites...so why should I map? Is it simply role play?

I haven't gotten that far. I've launched Kerbals into space, but gravity has always pulled them back down. Fortunately we packed a chute so they've all landed safely. No one has (yet) been stranded in orbit, but I'm working on that.

Mapping can locate anomalies on the surface.  These anomalies can then be explored.

The one thing that still puzzles me about this game is the dev's design decision to build it around the cartoony / Pixar-y Kerbals, rather than just, I dunno, regular ol' humans?

I just find it a little jarring, the disconnect between the 'seriousness' -- or realism, maybe -- of the subject matter -- build a successful space program -- and the cartoony Kerbals.  I suppose the point is to lessen the horror of launch catastrophes... it would be a lot more queasy-making if you felt these were 'real' astronauts burning up on reentry.  It's pretty gut-wrenching to see footage of the Challenger and Columbia disasters, after all.

Anyway, it's the one thing that has kept me from looking into KSP more seriously.  But given all the rave reviews, it appears I've misjudged it (...wouldn't be the first time...)

Yeah, my guess is so that you can enjoy it more when things are blowing up.

Ok, so for satellites, there is no reason to orbit one on Kerban right? Since I don't explore my own planet.

Incorrect.  There are anomalies on Kerbin, as well.  Didn't you read the press release?

Uhhh. No....what's exciting about looking at anomolies on my own planet? Oh we'll, or jotting a satellite is good practice for putting one on another planet

For folks playing this on Steam -- any issues with modding?  I know Steam auto-update + mods can sometimes = headaches.

Also -- just how steep a learning curve here?  I see that 'trial and error' is a large part of the allure -- but would you say this is an 'easy to get into, hard to master' game, or, 'hard to get into -- better do your homework first -- but worth the payoff once you figure it out' - ?

I'm using Nova Punch mod...no problems but haven't had an auto update. It should t be a problem as the mod doesn't replace files...it just adds them.

As for learning curve? Watch the tutorial for first orbit. The link is on an earlier page in this thread. Teaches you what you need. Basically, build your rocket (he shows u how). When u are at about 16,000 meters set your rocket to fly at 45 degrees. Keep going until your ball says you are in orbit (as opposed to surface). Cut throttel off completely and Go to the orbital map and "set maneuver" once you have the orbit you want, go back to your ship. Next to the ball you will see a "t-minus" and a burn time. Point your ship at the blue crosshairs and fire the engine when you are at "t-minus" time. Them fire thrusters for your burn time and your in orbit.

Now, none of this makes sense...but watch the video and it will.

I made a successful orbit after about 8 tries. Usually the problem is building a rocket with insufficient fuel left for orbital maneuvers. Remember to keep enough fuel to slow down to re-enter.

Basically, it's not hard to figure out how to work the mechanics of the game. It is hard to execute.
I was a doubter at first but am having a blast now. You get a real sense of accomplishment when you finally put a guy in orbit and bring him back home. Next for me is designing a satellite and placing it in orbit. Then it's a sat to orbit the mun, then a probe.

Try this... This is the best one I found

Personally, I have more empathy for Kerbals than humans. lol

Thanks for the link.  OK, watching that, I'm sold.  I literally laughed out loud when he was in orbit and switched to the first-person pilot's perspective to take a look out of the capsule window.  Just wasn't expecting that was a feature!  Made me think of Ed Harris as John Glenn in "The Right Stuff."  Pretty effin' brilliant.

...this game looks dangerously addictive...

Ok, so I am launching a kerbal for a standard orbit mission in my Mercury mk2. I'm getting pretty good at these launches and my rocket is very stable...so, I get into a good orbit with lots of fuel left. So I say "screw it"...lets try an orbit around the Mun. So I click on a maneuver point and pull the orbit out until it goes out past the Mun and returns to Kerbin. "Great!" I say, "I've got tons of fuel and only need a 40 second burn to reach that orbit! We're going to the Mun! That wasn't so hard."

Problem: stupid Newton and his stupid ass physics. By the time I reached the point in my orbit where I was supposed to be swooping low over the lunar landscape...the Mun was gone. That's right....you guys might not know this but the Mun (moon) actually orbits too! Shocked? I was. So I ended up orbiting nothing as the moon had moved millions of miles by the time i got there.

Everyone made it home safe...if not embarrassed.

LOL.

I can't even begin to tell you how much I learned about space and orbital mechanics when I started goofing of with Orbiter.

What's funny is that I spent all this time learning about orbital mechanics to play a stupid game and now I'm taking some graduate courses in space systems for work and most of the orbital stuff is already in my head.  Who says games don't pay off?
