For all you rotorheads, DCS UH-1 Huey has finally hit the street in pre-order beta form. This is probably the most comprehensive Huey sim ever developed for the commercial sim marked. I've had fun just running the cold start procedure, over and over and over again. I get a sick joy out of just watching the blades spool while sitting on the ground and watching the heat blur effect haze over the engine.
The few times I've attempted to get into the air though have met with total disaster. This thing is EXTREMELY difficult to fly. I have a very sincere appreciation for the men who flew this thing in the skies over Vietnam.
Anyway...look for some screenshots during May-viation!
It's a great product and beautifully modelled. So I might get it just to support Eagle Dynamics.
But in the bigger sense of operational validity in the current DCS World theatre, the module has little to offer.

At least its a step above the P-51!
True! :D

Read it.
By Robert Mason. Got a copy on my shelf.
An incredible insight into a Huey pilots career in Vietnam - the early days too - he's involved in Landing Zone X-Ray (We Were Soldiers Once) to an extent (how much I can't remember - possibly just recon in the area)
Fantastic book...couldn't recommend it enough!
If I remember correctly, he flew in ammo at a critical stage.
Is there an official forum at dcs for this, I couldn't find it. Unless only available to beta owners.

I have never really followed this. Does it come with weapons? Is it a Vietnam era or modern variant.

...got P51 in the waiting time, and now CA and of course the Huey 8)
(surely i have read my copy of Chickenhawk a few years ago)
i don't play MP (yet) and about to design a single player
Search and Destroy mission for the Huey, where RPG-insurgent groups (with random appearance, so i don't know 'if and where') have to be found.
There will be a trigger if one or two of those groups is reduced in strengths (able to get a distress call out). They might call in some light vehicles down the valley for help ...i on my side may have some assets on the ramp or in an orbit to call in myself to deal with that threat then...
also i plan to use the UH-1 as the command ship to direct ground battle from, and thought about a truck convoy escort or something
i liked to support ED with the 'surplus' P51/CA purchase, i bet DCS will get different areas of operation (maps) and fitting 'historic time periods '(toys) in the future.
a super-sized Mediterranean map would be handy for mixed ship, air, ground action from 1939 to 2020 ;D
btw. there is a question about the general AI behavior.
Does an overall command OPFOR-AI in SP exist?
(well i know, it will not generate total new pathes from scratch, or send in reinforcement form a staggering area without a carfull designed trigger events)
but, lets say: one single OPFOR 'recon' group spotted my group, and there is also one OPFOR artillery unit, on active and in range sitting on the map, would that artillery unit-AI (learn my groups presence in their range over 'a abstract simulated OPFOR command-net', and because OPFOR artillery AI is set to the correct 'task' for its waypoint in the editor) start shelling my spotted group?
I am just actually looking deeper in the Editors manul and the sandbox-potential is just: Marvelous

Thank you
MikeGER, the situation you describe with the artillery can indeed be present in the mission. However, I don't think C2 or C3 is modelled in the sim yet. They have been talking about a working command and control structure, but as of now all groups have an autonomous AI.
This will be a feature that might come in the future.
For now they are getting the warehouse and supply system up and running. Where you can define a specific stock of weapons and fuel to a warehouse. Units refueling and rearming use these resources and you will have to create resupply flights/convoys to maintain an operational level of stock.
The system is currently tied to warehouses on airfields only, but who know what might follow.
The mission editor already has an interface for the supply system, but it is not functional yet.
Then, Artillery does not have to 'see' a target, though. Instead they use trigger zones to act. (or direct commands in CA module)
So, if a given target group enters a given zone in their range, they will activate and start shelling the target.
Jomni: Is there any other variant of the Huey than a Vietnam era one? ;) Seriously, mentioning the Huey in the same sentence as 'modern' is just blasphemy!
Seriously though, it's still being used as a trainer and I've spotted it in the mediteranean as a SAR helo often as well.
I am not sure it has any current warzone function anymore, though.
UH-1Y Venom. Well I guess it's not called a Huey anymore. Hehehe.

^Huey on steroids.
That's a totally different aircraft.
It's like saying the Boeing 737-200 is the same as the 737-700NG. :D
The DCS module is UH-1H. The plain old workhorse of the 70's. Nothing more, nothing less.
Thanks for the clarification. No sale for me then. I just don't like things that don't fit the era of the main DCS world.
So I'm guessing you are going to take a pass on DCS: Farman M.F.7 as well then?
Geez... DCS just seems to be all over the place regarding time period.
I'd like to see a DCS Apache sim as I've really enjoyed the Black Shark despite a couple difficulties. An AH-64 would be easier to learn, although I dunno if they'd bother doing it since it's a two-seater.
I believe the F-18 was also high on a forum poll awhile back. I'd probably rather have an F-16 but either would do. I had some OS technical issues last time I tried playing a Falcon 4 mod so that's probably only gonna get worse in the future. :-[
I'd love to see the F-18 given the DCS treatment. F-15 would be good too.
F-15C has been confirmed and will be the next module by ED.
F/A-18A is also confirmed and will follow. Work is in progress.
Talk has been about the AH-1A, but nothing concrete yet. Just that ED is planning on doing one.
Then we have Various 3rd party dev groups who are making modules (of which the Huey was one too).
Keep the designators in mind; C variant of the F15, so no Strike Eagle; A variant of the Hornet, so not a Super Hornet and the A variant of the Apache, not the D.
This is all due to needing information to create a high fidelity sim, but many systems are still secret regarding specs and therefore not available for modeling accurately.

Splendid! Not that I've even learned the Black Shark yet, but still, that's great news! I haven't flown an F-15 since the Commodore 64 game Strike Eagle. :)

What makes you think an Apache would be "easier" to learn. I believe it would in fact be harder to learn because it is a much more complex aircraft in terms of avionics, weapons systems and controls. The KA50 is archaic in comparison, and that is why I found the learning curve much more manageable.
^I don't know if it's a "standard" thing in all choppers - but the trim on the KA-50 always buggered me about. I've watched some amazing videos of someone flying it a few feet off the ground and doing pirouettes...climbing, diving - showing incredible control.
I struggled to get it from A-B without having to constantly correct the flight path the KA-50 wanted to take.
I don't know if the Apache (or any other helicopter) would be easier in this regard - but I did find the KA-50 to be a fighter
Of course - there is the other train of thought which is I was just crap
Hi JD,
This video did the trick for me. The trim and ap are connected.... Crazy russians, but I'm getting there, learning to control her. And the Right Control+Enter really helps visulazing the trim position.

The cockpit would be easier to learn since it wouldn't be in cyrillic and I'm more familiar with US cockpit instruments in general. While the Ka-50 isn't overly elaborate, I still find the learning curve higher just because it's Russian.

I was told (by someone here?) that the Trim in Black Shark gets thrown off if you have any Deadzone set for your joystick.
I had some dead zone set for mine (in-game) and every time I tried to use the trimmer it would go nuts and pull me all over the place. The deadzone thing explains why it would
always oversteer.
I hope they've fixed that by now, but I've not yet revisited BS2 since picking up A-10C.

No thats not DCS World ;D ... better, its the analysing tool Tacview to study (could be taken literally) your flights!
the more i learn about DCS world, its possibilities, the community tools aggregating around it... 8) the more i love it! :)
can you believe there is an Android app in the making by a user, that turns your Android tablet into a dashboard with the main instruments
(DCS export the raw data, and somehow they will get streamed over wifi network to the tablet for to place it under your LCD)
Yeah its great to see all those utilities.
The iPad version of that program you mention is too laggy to use in the sim though, so I am curious to see wether the Android version will be better.
The lag is about control input lag prior to feeding input to the sim.
Another cool utility is TARS. Its a plugin for TeamSpeak where it bridges TS and DCS in such a way that the radios actually work; seperate server wide emergency channel, preset functionality and manual freq All work.
Even distance and terrain interference is modelled!
Double post.. stupid me.

ooooohhhh....Huey for £15!
I actually haven't taken the plunge for Combined Arms at the moment because - well - I'm not convinced what it is or trying to be...
I have Combined Arms and P-51 but have not had time to get into them. Combined Arms leaves me especially confused... :-\
Of the two helos and the A-10, which is more N00b friendly? I'm tempted to pick up the Huey just because it's such an iconic bird.
I couldn't say which is more "n00b" friendly. I don't really have the flying experience required to make such a call - and I don't have Huey yet.
I would say they are pretty complex sims and that alone leads me to think none of them are n00b friendly...but someone with more flight time would likely be better suited to answering your question.

Combined arms is a gimmick. I was hoping it to be a simpler Steel Beasts or equivalent to ARMA. But it's way too simple.
It's all arcade to me. I got conned.
I don't know why I was banging on about a Strela - I meant Shilka - DOH!
It does have a campaign of sorts. Pure ground missions.
Interface is clunky and unconventional.

I found the learning curve on the KA-50 to be very manageable when broken down into component parts. For instance, first I learned start-up. I did not move on to anything else until I felt comfortable with it. Then I learned basic flight. Again, I did not move on or try anything else until I felt comfortable. Then navigation, then the skval, etc. It was quite some time before I even considered learning weapons.
When you're ready, there are some great tutorial videos out there.
The huey on the other hand has proven very challenging just to get into the air. It is suprisingly difficult to fly. So although the avionics may be simpler when compared to the blackshark, just managing basic flight has kept my hands quite full.

Excellent.
Time to pick up Flaming Cliffs 3, at the least.
Guys, CA is terrible as a stand alone armor sim, but throw it into the context of 20 player coop mission of DCS world and it really shines.
The way you use it is to play as the total ground force commander and jump in and out of vehicles as needed. You direct ground units much like an RTS, but the cool thing is calling in air strikes from human pilots. The Jtac position is worth price of admission alone.
The problem is how do you get aviation simheads to take time out to fill in at ground commander ? Might be better to get some guys with an RTS itch to play that role, so hey we are always looking for ground pounders on the firehouse/ hollo pointe/ simhq servers.

That does sound interesting, playing as a ground commander in MP.
Too bad the modelling doesn't sound so hot on the ground vehicles. Would've been way cool if, for example, the SAM batteries were modelled like that one Russian SAM freeware sim that someone made awhile back. Can't remember the name of that one.
EDIT: ahh.. here it is:
SAM Simulator. https://sites.google.com/site/samsimulator1972/home
I haven't flown Huey yet (but for $20 I'm grabbing it and the Black Shark upgrade finally!), but I will say that if you don't have a decent HOTAS and rudder petals, steer clear of the helicopters. IMO.
Now then, if we had 10 guys here on Grogheads with Combined Arms, we could have hella fun. The single player experience is fun to goof off with, but if you're looking for a hardcore simulation it ain't it. BUT, if you are interested in some force on force MP, it can be a lot of fun. It is sort of like (sort of) Wargame AirLand Battle but you can jump into and out of the ground vehicles.
Just don't expect super hardcore modeling of the ground vehicles cause they're not. But it is still fun.

My touch screen monitor was a game changer for me. Helps not having to memorize keys, just look at a button in the pit and push it onscreen. It's allowed me to jump to all aircraft in game and be effective.
It's hard for me to get FC3 with no clickable cockpit, but if it's on sale so, I may get it. I've been hankering for some a2a and tired of waiting for guys in f15s to clear the skys so my a10 or ka50 can go to work.
I wonder if the standalone f15 and su27 are near release, hence the sale.
Same reason why I dislike FC3.

The TrackIR5 I picked up a few months ago has been a great experience for me in the DCS and ThirdWire games I've used it on.
I haven't even had to tweak the settings much at all - default worked pretty well right out of the box. ;D
^ MAN! WTH could I not get on with the damn thing! 3 of them I bought (or 2 - can't remember) and then sold each for a loss!
With default settings when I look down at my lap (which is a lot in DCS-A10), my head would quickly start to 'wobble' back and forth... I found a nice profile that is very smooth all around.. it definitely adds a lot of immersion in DCS, where you can practically put your cheek up against that dash!
The 'wobblyness' might be caused by having V-Sync set to on. Disabling it might resolve it and make the TIR experience a lot better.
Its recommended to have V-Sync enabled when using TIR as a general rule of thumb, regardless of the power of your PC.
I get a little wobbliness when looking down at control panels, but it's not terrible. I need to bump up the movement acceleration at higher up & right angles, however - keep forgetting to until I'm flying.
One thing about A-10C lately, though.... I can't push the engine RPMs up past ~94%. Maybe this is as it should be but my throttles max out there and even after adjusting my hotas throttle, it won't go any higher. Maybe there's a governor on the real A-10?
94% is as it should be. Its not your hardware. ;)

Okay, good to know. I had thought that I was able to push it to 100 (or nearly so) in the past, but perhaps that was in LOMAC or SF2:Europe and not A-10C. I get confuzzled easy sometimes. :o

3- AFM
4- Lock On level cockpit systems

I'm looking forward to the fully-modelled Sukhois although learning the Russian 'pits takes more time (for me).
I'm going to pass on the FC jets for now. The non-clickable pits simply don't do it for me. I've bought FC2 and FC3 now and really they've been charity to the developers for all the time I've spent with them.
I am going to spend more on the helos though. Black Shark 2 upgrade and Huey finally, and I'm really looking forward to that Mi-8 module.
We have all those airframes in Flaming Cliffs anyway don't we?
I get these are variants (though I don't know "what" the variant is - I'll look it up later)...I'm not overly happy about "variants" before new airframes.
But they're job isn't to make me happy - it's to make money.
I guess what I'll do is check out the variants, what's in Flaming Cliffs now and decide whether to buy or not. Definitely not interested in the Mi-8.
I'm still waiting for that damned Mig-21!

I'd like to see more MiGs too, although the older ones are pretty thin on payload. A fleshed-out Mig-29 would be great. I suppose the Su-27 will have to do in the meantime, although it's not as pretty. :P We need F-18s ASAP too.
I've probably enjoyed the Black Shark more than the rest, however. I want more proper gunships to fly more than anything! >:( I'm a sneaky bastard at heart.
Well - it's there business...but I just want more proper weapons platforms. I know - I know...the Huey can deliver a payload of hell...maybe the Mi-8 can too.
I'm just salivating waiting on proper weapons of war platforms. Maybe I mean more mainstream by that - I don't know. But after BS and A-10 we get P-51, Focke Wulfe (? is that there?), Huey and Mi-8.
I know there's people out there that appreciate these platforms...and I hope they enjoy them - but they're not what I'm waiting for from DCS. I'm waiting for Tornado, Harrier, Ah-64, AH-1, F-18, F-14, F4, A6 as well as some Russian Cold War bad boys and a whole host of others I'd pump the money in for.
I want to support DCS so they can make more - but the releases really need to be something to my liking - otherwise I'm just burning money I really don't have on something that will not get flown.
Until then - I can keep myself busy with trying to get into FC3, A-10 and BS.

What is DOF cockpit and AFM? If you buy one of these individually do you not need that other game prior, like you do with FC3?
DoF = Depth of Field
AFM = possibly Aircraft Flight Model (manual?)
I thought its ?
DoF Degrees of freedom , you can move your head (probably with Track IR) in 6 axis (left /right up /down + back and for)
AFM advanced flight model (they calc the lift/force surfaces on the plane generate depending on velocity and angle to the airstream more detailed ...more individual segments on the planes surface to sum up )
DOF = degrees of freedom (head movement)

AFM advanced flight model (they calc the lift/force surfaces on the plane generate depending on velocity and angle to the airstream more detailed ...more individual segments on the planes surface to sum up )

What is DOF cockpit and AFM? If you buy one of these individually do you not need that other game prior, like you do with FC3?
They're right - it's the "6 degrees of Freedom" 3D cockpit that allows TrackIR users to move their head in all directions around the 'pit. There are enchanced flight models in FC3, along with some nice new Air-to-Air missile modelling additions. One of the big changes is FC3's integration into DCS World so you can fly all those aircraft in multiplayer, of course.
And, yes, you need LOMAC to install FC3. I had to dig out my old LOMAC disk and install it first before the installer would run. I had hoped that it would just detect it in my drive but no. Now I wonder if I can uninstall the old LOMAC version no that FC3 is installed.... ???
EDIT, OT:
Does anyone have a link to a good TrackIR 5 profile?
While mine is nearly there, I'm afraid to dig down and fine tune a couple things without jacking up some settings. Most notably when I zoom in on the control graph for any axis, the view changes and I can't figure out how to adjust what I need to adjust and then get back to default view. :-\
The FC3 aircraft upgrades...well they're lame IMHO. Not worth the money to me at all.
Now then, I did some reading up on the Mi-8 today and it's one of the most exported helicopters in the world. It can carry a bunch of weapons and is a dual purpose transport and gunship. It should complement the DCS World quite well and it's just so refreshing to see helicopters that have never been done.
I'd still prefer an AH-64 or Mi-24, but I'll take the Mi-8 in the meantime.
IIRC the first Gen Mi-24 was heavily based on the Mi-8, greenhouse canopy and all.
A word of warning:
DO NOT map your 'Pause' key to a joystick button in the DCS games. It can cause your keyboard keys and/or joy buttons to become unresponsive.
I had wondered why my buttons & keys would regularly stop working during flight and eventually found the cause vaguely alluded to in a forum thread. I'd set Pause to one of the base buttons on my HOTAS so that I could stop the game and look up anything I needed but that would eventually jack up the sim, evidentally. Looks like removing it solved the issue.
I've been happy with FC3, but I don't own FC1 or 2 so it fills in a lot of flyables in DCS World for me. Also.. some of the new 6DOF cockpits are nice in conjuction with TrackIR.
Huey for £13 - that's hard to resist regardless of my thoughts on the subject matter!
