Title: Marvel Heroes Online
Post by: Tpek on May 03, 2013, 07:49:00 AM
https://marvelheroes.com/

In case you weren't aware, this F2P MMO set in the Marvel Universe goes into open beta today.
The gameplay is remindful of Diablo/Torchlight/Paths of Exile, except you play various superheroes in the Marvel Universe (Wolverine, Deadpool, Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, Spiderman, etc...).

As opposed to the OB with Neverwinter, this isn't the actual launch, which will begin on May 28th for those who got the Ultimate Founder's pack.

Looks like Marvel Ultimate Alliance to me and while I love the MUA games I wouldn't want to play such a game on the PC.

I played MUA back then on the PC, it was awesome.
Too bad the devs decided to be complete douches and not release the sequel on the PC, just on every other platform :(

We played MUA through on the Wii and then again through it on the 360 (much better looking game on that platform of course). MUA2 was even better with the new fursion combo moves :)

But really, this is pure console stuff, on a big HDTV, with a controller while sitting in a relaxing armchair - like a real superhero ;)

I found MUA to be perfectly good on the PC.
Never liked Consoles TBH.

Plus, this game is more like Paths of Exile, or Diablo. It plays better on the PC :)

Now that the game has been made available to the general masses.
Anyone else here playing it? :)

I played it a couple-three weeks ago.  Wasn't very impressed.

While I generally love action rpgs, this one just seemed very thin on content and depth.  Of course, I only played for a couple hours but there was nothing I'd seen to indicate the character system & game mechanics would get any more interesting.  It's okay for a light action rpg I suppose.

I suppose.

I played Iron Man for awhile.  The two or three attacks he had just didn't feel all that compelling at the time.

The game is still installed on my desktop IIRC, so I'll probably check it out again sometime after my Wargame:ALB and Wizardry 7 & 8 itches are scratched.

Is there group content?  I'm guessing the mobs scale with party size, as in most ARPGs?

^Yes there is.
Also by default (you can disable it) when you enter an instance you get automatically added to a group doing the same instance.

Weirdly enough they seem to have temporarily removed the "Guilds" feature they had in the beta.

Most MMOs struggle with content and depth upon initial release. But like a fine wine, they age well.

Hopefully.

So I just got around to re-visiting Marvel Heroes after it's release.

I gotta admit that it's kinda fun once I got a couple different charcters to hack & slash with (or is that smash & grab?).  Looks to be some enjoyable fun for when I don't want to think too hard.   Grouping looks to be fun too.  My main complaint right now is that the graphics tend to 'micro-stutter' a lot on my desktop but I'm updating my drivers as we speak, in the hopes that this has been addressed.

My handle is 'NefariousCoal' if anyone's looking to team up sometime; add me to the Friends list and gimme a buzz if I'm on.

We could always try to form a guild.
I've got enough gold for it :P
(I don't play it that often now but I've already got a character, Deadpool, at the endgame)

May be worth a shot, if you play it sometime.

Do you have 'The Thing' yet?  I just looted his token, after a long group fight vs Venom, but had already got him at the end of the first chapter.

Nevermind... looks like there is no trading of those character tokens in MHO.    :-[

Hell, there isn't you can't even swap regular loot without just dropping stuff on the ground.  I suppose this forces people to work for their loot, but seems a bit odd in an MMO.

Anyway, I'll leave you with something useful in this post:  An MHO character planner site, for planning out character builds and presuing ones other people have created -  http://marvelbase.com/

Not sure yet.   I have Wolverine, Colossus, Black Widow, and Spiderman at or a hair above level 10 thus far.   Gonna level Iron Man up a bit and see if his damage capability improves.

I also just picked up Punisher, but he's super puny in the first few levels.  His two starting skills' DPS blows nuts.. hopefully it improves once he gets a couple more levels and some more abilities open up.  Iron Man doesn't start with much DPS but at least he's pretty survivable - Punisher is the first I've had die in the very first subway instance (the sub-room with the chest and the tough group).  :o  On the opposite note - Storm has been crazy dps pew pew in the early game.. more so than any other I've tried.  I suppose she will be a "glass cannon" later on?

Dunno if anyone else has been having the occasional fps stuttering, as I do on both my machines, but here's some customization tips:

Quote
If you locate the MarvelEngine.ini file (as a windows user, i found it in My Documents/My Games/Marvel Heroes/Config), you can adjust numerous settings, but the one option i found that gave a very noticeable improvement in all areas, was the DynamicLights=True setting. By setting this to false, you no longer have what appears to be the majority of real time lights functioning at all times in game.

https://forum.marvelheroes.com/showthread.php/29034-Performance-Booster-Tips

Since it uses the Unreal Engine (oddly enough), you can dig in with a text editor and adjust some settings.  The in-game gfx settings only has a handful of overall presets and I always like to pick & choose when I need to adjust.

Big update yesterday with all kinds of changes.

http://forums.marvelheroes.com/discussion/6713/game-update-notes-7-31-2013-1-11-0-243

If you didn't d/l the Steam version, you gotta uninstall and get the new patcher (& reinstall):

https://forums.marvelheroes.com/discussion/7714/new-marvel-heroes-launcher-downloader-please-read

I'm hoping that their game engine performance improvements will be noticeable.  The thing wasn't terribly gfx efficient before.  Tons of other stuff, including the new 'Eternity Splinter' drops for unlocking extra heroes for free.  A new free-for-all zone with spawning supervillain groups in it.  Etc.

Since there was so much in this update, I fully expect them to be further patching this sucker for a few days, with regular downtime.  I still have no clue as to why they wait until the end of the week to patch (do they like to work all weekend?) or why they waited so long to put so many changes in at once.   ???

I've been playing MHO again recently for an action-MMO fix.  The updates have definitely improved things.

If anyone's playing, add me:  NefariousCoal

I have characters up into the early level 30s so the endgame smash & grab grouping mayhem is an option.  :D

They sent a code and link for an extra Free Starter Hero to my registered email address.

Found it in my "promotions" email semi-spam tab.  Not sure how long it's good for.. today or this weekend?

Not sure how many starter heroes I don't have.  They changed the line-up a bit since I first started.  Pretty sure Captain America is one I don't have but the other four (or so?) would probably be a dupe for me.

Just redeem the code on your profile page and next time you log in you'll get a box with a hero token.

In any case they also just released a new character, Dr Strange.
And next week they'll be adding the much anticipated "Team-Ups", allowing your hero to summon another minor hero as a companion :)

I play a bit in small spurts when I want to fly around and blow up large groups of mobs with ragdoll physics.  It's one of my go-to games when I don't want to think too much.

Haven't played much in the past month.  Was getting close to having enough shards to get Dr Strange for free.

Raids, huh?  Hrmm.

I've not played in a month or more but this is one of my go-to MMO games for straightforward action.  It helps that they haven't convoluted the thing with a dozen different in-game currencies and special crap (like Neverwinter and other Free-to-plays, for example) although that has certainly been increased since launch.

It's been easy to get right back into after a short stretch, which is something I can't say for most FreeTPs.

I can't remember my chat name/ID at the moment.  Did I ever send that to you for a Friends List add?

I don't think the buddy list notifies the other person when you add them, so let me know.  I'll get yours added after I know the name.

Still haven't got any of my characters anywhere near the level cap.  Too busy bouncing back & forth between the different ones.

It still has the usual inventory junk "creep" that all MMOs progressively get over time.  Seems like when I come back and log in, there is even more collectible loot stuff filling up my bags and 'stash'.   >:(  Having already purchased some extra Stash space, it seems like they are continually wanting me to buy more.  :buck2:

Yeah, I missed the Anniversary thing.  Was probably attempting to play a dozen other games at the same time.

My highest level character is probably only around level 30-32 (Spiderman).  I tend to bounce around quite a bit so most of them aren't to the end-game stuff.

Are they ever going to add the extra (displayed) action bar option?  I thought they were working on that months ago.  :tickedoff:

With some of the characters, I'm finding that the single row of action buttons just isn't enough to fit everything on.  We shouldn't have to cycle through the available action bars in the middle of a fight with such Action RPGs.

It wasn't an issue with the original characters, but some of the new ones have a wider variety of skills to keep on the bar.
Title: Re: Marvel Heroes Online

There are actually 4 (I think) action bars. But you can only display 1 at a time.
You can switch between them using the 1-4 keys (the numeric keys row).

Yeah, but doing so when hordes of enemies are swarming you in real-time is just plain annoying.

Perhaps I've been spoiled on all the other MMOs, with their new-fangled multiple action bar options.  But perhaps they should also get with a more modern interface.  :))

I've not played much lately but I had been doing Emma Frost somewhat steadily.  She was fine for the most part but there was no more room for her extra Mind Control ability (for enslaving a mob) along with her normal attack/defense abilities.  I recall being pressed for an extra slot or two on others.

Everyone mentions Dr Strange as another one with a wide array of abilities which will not fit on the bar.  I've not got him yet, but he's definitely one I want to get soon since I almost have the shards.

The single bar at once thing has put me off it a bit, so I've not played much in the hopes we'd get such a UI improvement.  There was scuttlebutt that it was "on the to-do list" a few months ago but I don't know how seriously it was taken.  Even adding two extra slots to the current one would make a big difference.  There was a mod that helped you do something like that but it involved manually editing stuff and then having to do so again if updates messed with it.  Meh.

Not a nagging issue since I only play MHO when I just want to break stuff and not think terribly hard.  :D

It's definitely fun for when you wanna wreck stuff, loot, and level up.  It's a Marvel themed Diablo-style MMORPG.  With stuff flying everywhere.  Not too difficult to jump into after stretches or for something more straightforward and action-y.

I think you still get three free characters in the early game at different points, including your first one.  But those come from a small subset of all available.  Not sure if they rotate who's in that subset.  Then you can collect shards to unlock more as you go or just plain buy 'em if you want.

She's so diverse in her abilities that she's just not powerful or interesting enough in any of them so far.

She's one of those dual-purpose mixes of Melee and Ranged.  Prime candidate for one of those that could use some extra ability slots on-screen.  ;)  I ran with a mostly Ranged setup while levelling through but she can take a bit of a beating in Melee Diamond form, so I still switched to melee sometimes when the damage was coming in pretty hot and she became noticeably less squishy.    Not gonna win any DPS contests, but the extra survivability options are nice.

Iron Man is pretty awesome.
He was probably changed since I last played him, but he was the ultimate ranged dps/tank.
He was near unkillable with the proper build and items, and could do loads of damage while enjoying pretty much endless energy :)

I only ever play in short spurts, and I've not even been doing much PC gaming lately.  It's fun for some Diablo-esque action in an MMO setting but can get repetitive.  I'm amazed you can grind through to level 60, on a single character, in one shot.  I gotta switch characters a lot even when I'm playing.
Title: Re: Marvel Heroes Online

^I don't.
I first level everyone I have to 30 (to at least gain the 1% extra experience gain for them and the synergy bonus they give), and only then go for a 60.
Plus, I've already got over 150% extra experience gain due to all my leveled heroes :)

Even doing it in two separate runs takes focus.  Getting to level 30 isn't too bad, once you've done it a few times.  But to 60?  Ugh.  What do you do?  Repeat the earlier content and do the daily rooms and group specials over and over?

The run throughs are all the same.  So it can be pretty repetitive despite using characters with different powers.

I tend to do it in short stretches on any one character too.

But some of the free-for-all missions can be fun, with a bunch of other players running around wreaking havoc in the same zone.  Many of the 'Acts' may be repetitive but there's usually players all over, throwing cars and wrecking the hordes of baddies, so it can be fun for a time.  The special end-game group missions are like that, cranked to eleven from the masses of baddies, powers, and explosions.

Plays like a Diablo MMO but with the over-the-top superhero action.   It's Free-To-Play so you can get a handful of free characters just by playing.  I tend to do so when I want a simpler smash-up MMO instant gratification experience without most of the other MMO baggage (like waiting on people all the time or wasting time travelling).

I wondered why the hell I didn't have AA turned on in Marvel Heroes, so turned FXAA back on and adjusted some gfx settings.  All was running fine.. for awhile.

After having it running a couple-three hours straight, I hit a hot key to open an in-game window and it insta-crashed.  So hard that it took two restarts to get my Windows to properly boot.  :tickedoff:

I now recall why I turned AA off before.  The gfx engine is still a bit touchy.  I've had a rare 1 or 2 second freeze since returning to the game lately, but it wasn't often enough to be concerned with.  Maybe I should use a preset and keep it to a couple small adjustments.
Title: Re: Marvel Heroes Online

Anti-aliasing wasn't the problem.  Marvel Heroes has some nasty memory leaks.  So I've been restarting the client on occasion.

Even that doesn't always help, however.  I tend to leave my desktop running for days straight, without ever turning it off or restarting.  I saw other people bitching about the occasional game crash and it's recommended fix: regularly rebooting your PC.  I thought they meant restarting the program, but I must be wrong because it gave me another blue screen after having played it over a few days without restarting and that supposedly can cause it to freeze your sheeit.

Anyway.. there is reportedly a 64-bit exe client that can be used.  I'm guessing it's buggy beta or we'd be using it right now?

Despite getting a blue screen once every day or two, it's been a nice getaway from serious gaming.

I noticed.

If I start, I usually don't stop for awhile.  Although I do go AFK reguarly throughout.  So leaving it running idle like that is a bad idea.   Despite regularly logging out, I still got a blue screen after only being on about 20 minutes once which leads me to believe the talk about rebooting your computer every day if you run it regularly.

Being on boosts is really like being on a lot of sugar/coffee, once you run out of them completely (and the devs remove the server side boosts as well),
you just crash down and start feeling like everything's starting to grind :P

Nope.
PvE focus.

It's pretty much similar to Diablo in gameplay (not surprising since it was made by one of the 3 guys that made the original Diablo series), only MMO and with Marvel characters
as classes.
Not entirely unlike Path of Exile.

It's pretty fun, and constantly improving.

Some of the phasing stuff could be enjoyable.  I like the warping/teleporting abilities in MHO, but some of the characters with it can be squishy.

I'm more interested in the upcoming Blade character.  Hopefully some fun abilities there & less annoying stuff such as all of Dr Strange's abilities having lengthy cooldowns (frustrating).  ::)  Maybe they'll give Strange a power review before the movie comes out late next year.

It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have to constantly cycle through the different hotbars.  The game still needs better UI options when it comes to the extra abilities that don't fit in the insufficient single bar.  I got spoiled on most other MMORPG UIs, which had begun doing that right many years ago.

Got enough shards saved up for a couple new ones.. may choose him as one.

The devs crank out patches like mad.  Seems like every day.  Then they're adding yet more heroes what.. every month?   :o

I just wish they would expand on the chapters.  Or, better yet, improve their new "Danger Room" concept of randomized missions.  Give that idea a full treatment and take it off "cow zone" drop limits.  Because the high level characters is a far too repetitive grind in the various dailies & terminals, or redoing the main quest line in hard+ modes.  Could use more variety @ mid-to-high levels.

I still enjoy it for some crazed superhero smash & loot without having to think too much.  Nice & relaxing usually.

Played Iron Fist a bit this morning.  He's got a couple beastly damage output abilities by level 20.  But with the cooldowns, it takes some time getting hotbars & rotation familiar.

Even early AM, there were lots of ppl on.  But some of the holiday bonus stuff was turned off, reportedly  due to bugs.

Rumor has it they're gonna give out a free random hero and costume on/around Xmas.  Guessing you gotta log in whatever day that may be.

New upcoming hero additions this year:

    Angela
    Black Bolt
    Elektra
    Green Goblin
    Nick Fury
    Ultron
    Hero To Be Announced!

I've been wanting a playable Green Goblin for awhile.  Definitely highest on my list.  >:D  Think it's supposed to be sooner rather than later.

I wonder which other heroes will get revisions this year.

Judging by past habits, I'm going to assume that Dr Strange will get some sort of review since the movie comes out in the Fall.  I'd like to see him get one, if only for some straightforward adjustments.

Once I get back to playing MHO, I'll be getting him with some free shards, of course.  Figured there would be the inevitable patch or two of fixes for new characters so not rushing just yet.

Plus Grim Dawn was just fully released AND I've been on an ancient warfare kick again.

Now that Grim Dawn has been released, I haven't done any MHO in awhile.  Even despite Green Goblin being out.

Well... MHO was also fatally crashing on me a couple months ago.  On both my Nvidia machines.  I'm sure it's been fixed by now since others had been complaining about same at the time.

2 actually.

One of the normal TEAMCAP / TEAMIRONMAN codes and one of those with the MB (mystery box).

It's possible you could pick the normal one for cap/im and then the mb for the other :P

Thanks.  Didn't know that.

I'd prefer to get extra Iron Man stuff, but I've never been happy with how he plays in MHO.  Feels rather slow and plodding.  On the other hand, Cap has more enjoyable skills.

Yes, it's free to play.

I started shortly after it began, about 3 years ago, so I'm not sure what all you start with these days.

I believe they give you a hero of your choice, to start, and then you get one or two more as you finish the campaign & such.   Then they occasionally have one of these freebie events with free randoms.  Plus you can unlock others, of your choice, with in-game loot drops (shards).

You can play all the content without purchasing anything.

It's pretty much Diablo 2 in a Marvel MMO guise.

Rampage through enemies, loot, and spec your character's trees to unlock & use various abilities.  Relaxing mass mayhem for me.

Instanced multi-player.  I've not done raids or anything yet, just do some solo stints and switch between heroes to smash stuff up.

Your hero's look doesn't change with your equipment, unlike many Diablo-style ARPGs.  The superhero outfits are true to various comic versions.  You can buy variant costumes through the cash shop, along with extra heroes and some other stuff you may want without grinding.  Remember that your costume item can have buffs added to it at the crafter, so donate looted stuff you're not using to him first (until he's levelled to 20).

When you start playing MHO, and using the looted Shards to buy new heroes & such, I highly suggest you get the Random Playable Hero option until you have well over half the available hero roster.  They are almost 1/3rd the cost (in Shards) as picking a specific hero.

Currently the easiest & most powerful heroes, ideal for beginners, includes:

Spider-man
Jean Grey
Scarlet Witch
Doctor Doom
Elektra
Captain America
Deadpool

Not sure which of those are available for a first pick.  If they all are, I would suggest possibly picking up one of the higher cost heroes (Deadpool, Doom, Spider-Man) but go with your favorites, in general.   Tpek may have some extra suggestions for that list.

Many of the other heroes are passable, but a few older ones have fallen behind the power curve at the moment.  I think The Hulk is a big no-no right now, for example, being pretty weak compared to most others.

Angela has just been released.

And the game has been undergoing a massive revamp.
The entire Avengers tower hub, the prologue chapter and chapter 1 have all been entirely redone.

Plus there's the new highly controversial difficulty system that scales the enemies to be on par with you (according to level and equipment and such), and is pretty much the reason I barely touch the game these days.

AGAIN?!

What the ever-living fuque?

Why do these jackanapes keep spending time dicking with the earliest parts of the game, where people go once.. for 10 minutes?

The last time they changed the prologue, it became far more confusing for beginners IMO.  Hell, I had problems figuring out where I needed to go, and I had been playing most of the game's lifetime!  Wonder how bad they'll jack it up this time.   ::)

They need to stop fuquing with the first tiny noobie part, and start adding to the middle and end.

Quote

I've not played in months, so I don't know what's been cooking.

They should never have changed the old difficulty options, anyway.  Being able to manually raise the difficulty level, and re-do the main story Diablo-style numerous times, offered the perfect option.  Then they just bunched it all together and forced people to grind in a very specific way by taking away their difficulty options.  ::)  Sounds like they're doing more of the same.

Even if a difficulty system like this was wanted or needed, it's gotta be pretty obvious that it will have issues and growing pains for a long time.  What one person, or developer in this case, thinks is difficult, another person will not.  That's aside from problems caused by transferring such views into the game's mechanics, which always takes constant tweaking in MMOs.

....

Once again, a developer commits it's effort & man-hours to things that don't really need to be fixed, but ignores adding what keeps MMO players coming back:  more content to experience with their characters.

<facepalm>

I assume it probably even makes the poor survivability of certain under-powered characters even more painful, too?

The difference between good survivable heroes, and the weaker ones, is already quite a stretch.  Their hero reviews are slow as old people fookeen, and the power creep has left a fair number of the heroes weak and uninteresting.  They need to concentrate on getting those up to speed, faster, too.

Hulk has been one of the perpetually broke characters in the game.  I don't have him, but he's reportedly been exceptionally weak for quite awhile.

That's a good metaphor for how screwed up the game has been, in general, over the past couple years.  Seemed like the devs were adding needless junk while their new hero releases were continually providing "power creep" that would make the older heroes wimpy and obsolete at a fast pace.

They were doing hero "reviews", and updating them with revised powers and such, but it was happening more slowly than their new hero releases.  It was a glacial pace.  So by the time an older hero got an update, they'd end up dropping behind again after a time.  Some heroes didn't get a review, or a very good one when they did.  I think Hulk was one of those that got shafted.  He was actually pretty strong, early on after the game first released, so maybe that's why he never really hit the "to do list".

The dev lead left earlier this year (iirc).  It has showed because the new boss must've been the one to fix all the bloated or unbalanced crap with these big game overhauls having been announced not long after the torch was passed.  Wish this transition would've happened a bit earlier.

I guess the old ex-lead just wasn't into doing much with MHO anymore and it started showing in the gameplay design.  I'll be happy once everything is trimmed and updated under the new management.  This has been one of my go-to casual hack & slash online games, when I don't feel like doing single-player, but also don't want any competitive MP stress.  Chillaxe'in but still wreckin' NPCs.  :)

The game is nothing like it was before.

IMHO, I'm definitely not a fan of the new game.
They really should have kept the old systems and instead improved upon them instead and make a separate MH2 to follow their
own original vision for it.

Haven't checked it out yet.

I did feel that the previous iteration needed a LOT of work, and some re-working.  Dunno if it went in the right direction but been hoping I'd enjoy it more after the big changes.
