Looks like the upcoming RPG that made such big Kickstarter bank is now available for pre-order at Steam. Due in June.
This is one in which I'll leap before even looking. 8)

Looks like a modern Baldurs Gate, not a bad thing for a party based RPG. Its looks like a classic RPG brought into the modern age, lets hope the story makes this one a keeper.
I just can't hold my anticipation over this.
Has a firm release date finally been announced?
Steam has been listing it as June for quite some time now. And I do think the Harebrained Schemes people (the devs) said something about a firm release date.

Yes.. it just says "June".
As someone previously mentioned, Steam seems to schedule release dates long before they arrive so they look to be pretty firm. I suppose that just promotes buggy releases but at least the post-release updates happen more often.
I suspect that this release date was scheduled awhile back, and as with many releases.. it will probably need some early patching. I say this because it sounds like they only just added the 'Matrix Running' mini-game thing fairly recently, and I didn't expect this to be released for another year or more ( the kickstarter wasn't terribly long ago). It's probably short on content, in the hopes that the player base will kick out a lot of stuff with the full editor that's included - that's what the $20 price tag tells me. I was hoping it'd be content heavy on release but if you don't expect a lot then you'll rarely be disappointed, right? ;)
I have also pre-ordered this. It's my understanding that the Berlin DLC is supposed to be released immediately when the base game is released. I know the people that pledged are supposed to receive Berlin when they get their copies.
Just now watched that full Alpha preview from months ago.

When they said June release, I suppose that means June 30? :P Hopefully there are plenty user-created scenarios coming out (and the editor is nice). IIRC, there's some preview of the editor on youtube also. ???

Looks pretty nice....likely will make my purchase list too....I saw on the forums someone speculated as early as 6/26 or by end of the month.

Yeah, I'd guess the 25th or the 26th. So many release on a Tuesday, seems to be a common industry standard (like dvd movies).
After watching the clips on the editor, I'm impressed with it's relative ease of use. There should be a steady stream of user content.

I have waited 20 years for a followup, think I played and finished the SNES version more times than I can count, at the end of the game the sequel is outlined but never saw light of day. One of the best cyberpunk games going along with Neuromancer on the Amiga.

I recall playing the Sega Genesis version, which was reportedly very different from the SNES one.
The Genesis version was a sandbox-ish style RPG with some randomization. It was one of the best console games from that era. I was surprised at how open the game was because consoles titles were usually quite limited in scope & console rpgs generally led you by the nose. Another fun part of it was the Netrunning side, which was a whole separate game. I had high hopes for the netrunning side of things in this new one but it sounds like a small side-game afterthought in this one - no "jacking in" just to steal random corp secrets and sell them for nuyen.
The mod community is already in high swing, and remakes of the old games are only a couple of the ones being cooked up. After seeing the editor, I'm sure there will at least be a steady flow of scenarios to download. Something nice in particular is the modular scripting options that cuts out so much typing, syntax issues, and the need to search for all the script commands/tags/etc (since they're all in big dropdown menus). Much faster & easier than the NWN series' editors.

Yeah, you can see a bunch of videos on how to use the editor here: http://shadowrun-returns.wikispaces.com/Editor+Overview
I've only watched two vids, but I think even I can figure this out. :D Seems much easier than Arma 2's overly-complex editor. It's been a long time since I played a game that had a robust but easy to use editor. This alone might sell me on the game (I am completely unfamiliar with this franchise).
Been burned way too many times to buy without a review or enough people playing the game to make sure it works well.
No pre-order for me.

Saving a whole $2 doesn't even make it worth considering for pre-order...but if turns out OK, I will pick up.
The release trailer says 7-25 release date, at the end.

Prepare for some of ye olde tactical turn-based ultraviolence, chummer. 8) Looks very X-Com style but with all the wonderful cyberpunk/fantasy mix to be had in Shadowrun.

Yeah, release is supposed to be tomorrow around 18:00 GMT (Valve Time).
This was under my radar until yesterday. For some reason I thought it was a FPS. Having watched some of the video, I'm psyched, although as posted above, $2 is not enough to get me to pre-order. I will buy it tomorrow, however, if reports are positive.

Someone made a Shadowrun FPS a few years ago. I don't think many of the old Shadowrun fans liked it. More for adolescent kids playing FPSes and screaming over XBOX Live.
From what I've seen of the beta videos, though, it looks to be in decent shape and the Editor looks damn fancy too. There are quite a few users already creating content and more to start after release. 8) AFAIK, it's regularly been on Steam's Top 10 Seller list for a couple months so that bodes well for user-created content.
There is also scuttlebutt that the first DLC, set in Berlin, will have a more open-ended campaign kinda like the old Sega Genesis
Shadowrun game. Kinda like a cyberpunk/fantasy version of Fallout 2 perhaps.
The couple user preview vids I posted above were actually playing a user-created scenario that one of the pre-orderers is creating. BTW.. sorry for starting out in the
middle of the damn things with the fourth one. Also sorry you have to put up with the dude's annoying gangsta wannabe imitations the guy occasionally blurts when he kills someone. :P
The reviews have been hitting today, so they must've been given the green light to blab. They few I've seen all give it a great score.
Here's the latest I checked out:

Just read that too....concerns me a bit, but maybe not bad based on the system. If it is, I am sure most people will beat them up and maybe force them to update the game with more save features:) For once I am not going to buy right away and see what the crowd says, but have to say it does seem promising for sure....can't wait to read impressions later today from the folks that jump in right away.

I've watched/read a few reviews thus far and checked on this. Evidentally it saves every time you transition, which is pretty much every time you leave one of the areas that generally covers ~1 to 4 rooms. So an extended combat encounter or a few dialogues and loot nodes.
I'd still rather be able to save while in the middle of combat, though. It's just an inconvenience despite their intention of it preventing save "scumming" so that you can choose different dialogue answers. It should probably be up to the player whether they cheat in such a way, when playing single-player games. I gotta admit that I
do like playing with no player saves and perma-death in roguelikes but SRR isn't hardcore mode. If you die, it still lets you reload from when you entered the room/area.
******
Reportedly the writing is pretty good, even though the campaign leads you by the nose for the most part. We should probably call it a 'scenario' since this will be more like the NWN series, with all the user-created scenarios that plug in. As reported, the Berlin DLC is supposed to be more open (like the old Sega Genesis game which I loved) so hopefully there will be more randomized shadowruns to be had from various 'Johnsons' of your choosing.
TotalBiscuit put up his review too, although it didn't feature much of the combat due to all the backstory and starting dialogue in the beginning:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-b-ggUSvo4
Was negative on the save thing and how you didn't have freedom to wander in the first pack but other than that seemed quite happy with it. Mentioned that people who liked the old Baldur's Gate style of story-driven RPG would dig it.
The user-content is what will make this game, in the end. That and extra features added in future DLC. I'll be a whore for that stuff.. they may as well take all my money right now. Love the setting, and want more cyberpunk-style RPGs. 8)
Not sure what I want my first character template to be. Ork Shaman or Street Samurai? Or battle mage? Luckily the skill system is open so you can mix & match as you level. Either way, I'll eventually come gush or bitch about it this afternoon after I spend some time in it.

Yes, there was this class-based mutliplayer team shooter that was made for Windows Vista only back in 2005 or so.
It was outright terrible in every conceivable way, and you probably won't even find it for purchase anymore.

Had to get in the mood.
I'm liking it so far.
My Troll Street-Samurai is pretty neat, despite his handicapped intellect :P
I'm digging it too, despite being a bit thin in certain departments. Note that the first big user-created scenario, "Lost Lamb" is already hosted on Steam Workshop for download, once you finish the stock one.

Check it out. I even used some of my favorite slang from the example above, in a sentence. ;D ;D Celebration.
"By the time I had pulled my Panther Cozy off the heavy iron, the drek-hot Rimbo had already begun scooting for the door. I Bruce'd the goose when her floor routine and funderware failed to keep me from turning her into chinese take-out."
Why don't you write a review for the rest of us. Send it to longblade.
Dunno... maybe if I feel like being long winded and cleaning up my run-on sentences. Haven't spent much time with it yet & only just took a break to do a couple things and make some coffee.

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/07/25/wot-i-think-shadowrun-returns
Can you rotate the map? Nothing I've tried seems to work.
I've run 1st and 4th edition Shadowrun tabletop RPGs (though still prefer the original Cyberpunk 2013/2020) so was rather looking forward to this and thinking about getting it at the weekend. However it seems to be getting a decidedly mixed reception on the Steam forums with a fair amount of negative comments about excessive linearity, lack of depth, short game length etc. The main defense seems to be wait for the great user-made content that is going to come.
Makes me think I should just hold off, wait for it to be in a sale by which time there should (if the base game is actually any good) some good mods for it.
Any reason, other than lack of self control to but it now ?
There are already two user-created campaigns available.
I.....must.....be.....strong.........I vowed not to buy today....
It's definitely not some monster RPG experience out-of-the-box.
I think it's biggest weakness is that the code was also done to work on iPads. I'm almost positive that's the reason we're currently stuck with the damn save checkpoints. Some of us have harped about how much cross-platforming games like this are lowering the standards of PC games and it's a damn good point, with another example. Although this is probably one of the most complex tablet-capable ones I've seen.
Despite the short vanilla campaign, shallow inventory system & cyber enhancements, and iOS-friendliness that limits it's scope, I'm still enjoying it for what it is. A bargain priced story-driven RPG system and it's toolset. No, it really won't come into it's own until all the great fiddlers out there put out their own content and the planned DLC expands on it.
It plays pretty much like a Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale RPG, but with an NWN-style toolset that's relatively easy to use but doesn't have a map creator (those will probably have to be recycled from release content since they're 2D?).

Thanks. Interesting review.
I disagree with something in that review. He states that magic feels underwhelming. It does, but only with the early first rank spells you start with. Damage-wise, they're not very impressive even for the Mage, but once you train & buy up to the second Rank, it's on. The Shaman's damage spells are pretty wimpy but their primary focus is manifesting & controlling spirit "pets" for a short period of time and buffs/debuffs. He probably didn't play a Mage and therefore only experienced that class from hiring the cheaper Mage Mercs that are available (and not as skilled as a player could be).
Otherwise, the review is spot-on. He didn't point out the annoyance of the current checkpoint save system all that much. It's probably more of an annoyance to module creators since they'll ideally have to keep each area fairly small and make sure to construct regular transitions. It's not bothered me terribly much thus far because I haven't had to jump up and do something in the middle of a session (yet). That's where I have the biggest problem with checkpoint saves - needing to save & quite for awhile. We shouldn't have to leave the damn game running for an indefinite period so as not to lose progress. Anyway.. the only place where the time between saves has been exceptionally long is a certain run near the end that has been a long one.
What this game needs most is more stock content. I'd also like to see some more features since there are things missing from the pen & paper game (Heavy Weapons anyone?) and the meta-creature list probably doesn't approach the quantity available in the tabletop publishings. It doesn't necessarily need all this extra content stuffed into campaigns in the future DLC, but for use in the Editor as that's where the game will get it's longevity.
I see that someone even released an Editor Tutorial on how to create random encounters, on Steam Workshop. I expect some pretty amazing stuff in the future, but I also hope that the official DLC will expand the whole thing a good bit, too. I would've liked to see Shadowrun come back as more of a Jagged Alliance style game but modders and editors have done some pretty amazing things before, when given the right tools.

I've finished the stock campaign after about 20 hours. Gonna try the first UGC next, probably with a different style of character.
I have noticed that there is still an occasional bug with the Shaman's manifested spirits. There have been a couple that are unresponsive and don't do anything. However, they were the kind that you can find on a mission maps so there may have been an issue with their scripting. Bad part is that it uses up one of your shaman's action points every round while they're out and you can't banish them unless you can take control of them, bringing up the appropriate action button. Luckily map transitions reset it but that doesn't help in the current combat area.
The stock campaign was quite fun. Hopefully there are some more good community ones coming out soon because I dunno how much time it will take to play "A Little Lamb" off the Steam Workshop. I believe that's the only full-length & nearly finished user campaign currently out available, so close after release.
I hope those screen shots aren't from the end of the campaign, because that's about where I am in the game.
^That's rather early on actually :P

Fun. Stock campaign is short. Combat much like the newer X-Com but with more variety & options. I've enjoyed it quite a bit and started up a second stock campaign while waiting for more user-created stuff.
I've always loved the Dark Cyberpunk-meets-magic setting, despite initially being very hesitant when I first saw the synopsis so long ago. As do some others, I thought it sounded a bit too cheesy but it actually works pretty well. Kinda like the way steampunk stuff does for 19th century, but in the near future (and not the past).
A smattering of small UGC scenarios have been coming out but I don't expect to see some big ones for awhile. In this sense, I expect the user-content to eventually be on the level of the NWN series, only without multi-player. Keep an eye out for the DLC/expansion set in Berlin, which supposedly has a more open campaign in it (the stock one is a very rigid storyline).
Interesting. Thanks Nefaro.
Oh, almost forgot...
The user-created content is published via Steam Workshop, so you don't have to track all that shit down and jump through hoops to install it. Just browse and click 'subscribe' on the ones you want to try out.
Steam Workshop was definitely one of their best 'borrowed' ideas. ;)

Despite it being lighter fare than we had all hoped, it's still .. something. I'm glad we finally got
any Shadowrun RPG on the computer. Perhaps we'll see a bigger one in the future?
As for the pen & paper version, I saw that they now have a 5th Edition out as of earlier this year(?). I couldn't help myself.. ordered it when I found some going for about $42, a few days ago. I still have a 2nd Edition and maybe a couple sourcebooks packed away somewhere but read that some stuff had been streamlined in the latest. Then my old RPG nostalgia got the better of me and I ended up also ordering the latest Star Wars RPG too. :o Not sure I'll get around to running them but I sure do enjoy reading 'em, if nothing else. :) I've I continue my old RPG buying spree, it would mean that I also pursue some Warhammer rpgs, Ars Magica, Call of Cthulhu, and Pendragon. The gaming Geekery has definitely hit a peak in the last few years - everything is being remade along with so much new stuff.
Hell.. I'd take
any "cyberpunk" style RPG on the PC, if it's good. You'd think that some other developers took notice when Shadowrun PC raking in that ignorantly huge amount of cash just from it's kickstarter. Surely the creators of the Cyberpunk tabletop saw dollar signs and started looking for developers?
Shadowrun rpg is far too painful to run or play in my opinion. Unfortunately, decking is basically a game unto itself. It's fun for exactly one person at the table, and unshiny for everybody else while the decker does their thing.
I am enjoying Shadowrun Returns, although I'm not sure I could recommend it to anyone not familiar with it's beloved -- and perhaps greatest ever -- RPG setting. The campaign shipped with the game is very well done from a storytelling pov. There are a handful of custom campaigns out that are quite good (unfortunately, they all take place on the same maps as the house campaign.)
The tactical combat is decent, but a little bland once you've teased out that the variables are basically cover, going first, and hitting harder than the opponent. That's not a bad thing mind you, just somewhat limited.
I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is a shadowrun fan. Pinetree hit it on the nose -- nails the atmosphere.
And I'm with Nefaro on fervently hoping for a cyberpunk computer rpg renaissance.
