Mentioned before, but they have founder packs allowing access to the beta, starting at $20.
You must agree to an NDA, however, since it's still closed beta.
Turn based Battletech-style game??? w00t!!!! 8)
Looks like pay to win and mainly multiplayer. Looks like the age of single player is dying :(
They say they have a player vs bots/A.I match.
I'm just wondering if they'll ever have hotseat, or if the founders packs are truly worth it.
Not to mention how much replayability it's going to have.

Perhaps I am a bit doom and gloom; but more and more mainstream developers are working on multiplayer only or limited single player games and this combined with the act of compartmentalisation of games to make more revenue is starting to take the fun out of gaming for me.

I just don't know where you are getting this. There have been many more games with strong single-player contact (some exclusively single-player) released in the last year or soon to be released than there have that focus on multi-player. I would make a list but there are so many I'm sure I would forget some.
I play single-player almost exclusively, and have not wanted for new games to play.
I signed up but haven't paid for founders' packs yet. I do want access to the beta; but I haven't been sent my email confirmation for merely signing up yet.
Also, SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

They're limiting the population, since it's still closed beta. So invites are few & far between.
I splurged on the $20 founder pack since it's a turn-based version with tabletop-ish mechanics.
Yeah, but I can't even buy a founder's pack because the email verification hasn't occurred yet. I mean I can't even try to buy a founder's pack.
MY MONEY, LET ME GIVE THEM IT!!!
(Christ, I wish I had my money back from that ridiculous Kenshi alpha.)
Ouch. I eyed that Kenshi alpha awhile back but it sounded like it'd be in permanent Alpha. :o
Did you check your spam mail? I'm pretty sure my registration went through within a few seconds, after I first signed up. That was a few months ago, however.
To keep this on topic, SQUEEEEEEEE, too! And for all the same reasons.
Off topic, multiplayer being prominent. The generation growing up now is so connected to everything going on around them that MP is probably not given a second thought. I would say that if a game does not have MP in the future, it may not have as great a following. Just my .02.

I've also splurged, for the Vet founder pack. Only managed to fit a single game against the AI in, but it seems very serviceable. It's a bit slow on my old PC, and I had to turn down all the graphics settings, but it still worked. It has a planned Attack then Movement phase and once they're locked in, you watch it all resolve simultaneously.
If we need to friend up in the MWT community, I'm as ever, plain 'spelk'.

I registered yonks ago, but couldn't remember my password, tried resetting it, but it said my account address was invalid, even though I'd been getting their info mails since I joined! So I started to create a new account, and it then recognised me, allowed me to change the password, and send an activation code through. However, the first one didn't make it. So I got them to re-send it again, and it come through.
So perhaps request the activation email again?
I requested it three times yesterday at least, and at least once by a different method.
YOUGUYSCANPAYMONEYANDPLAYTHEGAMEIAMSOJEALOUSFORRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!! {angrysqueeeeee}
Nothing showed up in spam.
While poking around on my account screen to see if I could change my email to my alternate (in case compuserve was blacklisted for some reason), I noticed I had checked "Turn Email Notifications".
Because in my mind, that translates to "send me notifications by email when the next turn is ready to play".
But on a beta site that might mean "Turn Email Notifications" off. (And someone forgot the off.)
So I've unchecked that, and asked them to resend verification email.
Hasn't occurred yet.(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wargamer.com%2Fforums%2Fsmiley%2F00000612.gif&hash=afacb921b63bc553dd197d4e246f20ebf68a32b2)
A few hours later: still hasn't occurred, although I got the silliest attempt at hacking my computer imaginable. ;)

Wow, my business signed up for this when I (the IT guy) wasn't looking? Giving a security business permission to log into my computer sounds like a great idea!!
Okay, tech (mech? do they eat at techmech restaurants? ;D ) support said some people have trouble receiving the verification email, so they sent me one directly, and I'm in.
Tried to buy a Founder's package through Paypal, but Paypal didn't entirely finish the transaction for some reason. Don't know why. Will be keeping an eye on it to see if it finally goes through.
Checking on MWT's forum, there have been extremely suspicious problems using Paypal since January: apparently MWT is using a service (Payspan) widely regarded on Google as fraudulent!!!

I have no idea what's going on there.
It's of no consolation, but I paid with my PayPal account and it was done in seconds. Do you have some overzealous anti-virus program or something? *shrug*
I also use Firefox & was only properly charged by Payspan.
I paid via Paypal, and it was processed through a company called UltimatePay.
I have Norton's, which is due to expire next month. Never given me a problem on this, though. (I'm using Firefox but it's an older version for MacOS10.4.11.)
I saw reference to UltimatePay in that thread, too, and it seemed as though MWT had switched to them, but Payspan was who the link actually went through still.
I also saw something in the thread to the effect that, for one person, the problem was an overzealous security system that saw some kind of disagreement between how the billing address was typed, but going through Paypal shouldn't be an issue there.
After a couple of days to make sure there's no weird activity after the cancellation, I'll try again from my updated Firefox Win8 (with WinDefender) at the house.
Update: Mech-support dealt with the problem and buying access to the closed beta worked through Paypal this time. So I'm in.
Still no email notifications; I have found the forum console (finally) that deals with this and that should fix the problem, but why new members don't automatically default to having email notifications of important things like WHETHER I'M ACTUALLY ABLE TO DO THINGS NOW or BETA KEYS, I have no idea.
Relatedly, I still have no beta keys. Not sure if I need them or what. Were they sent with my non-existent notification that my membership was approved? No idea.
Still, I can verify that yesterday even people with an old MacOS10.4 version of Firefox could use Paypal to buy a membership, so yay. :)
I check to see what all I got as email confirmation. I got two emails with payment and order # info shortly after putting it in. I was able to log into my game account right after.
I dunno why you've had so many issues, so I'll just blame it on your Mac. :P
Im a bit sad that I can't play the game on my Linux box, because Unity isn't supported on Linux (at the moment) :(
Missed this - as soon as my connection isn't provided by a polish hamster I'm on it
Its part of my grand plan to stalk jason around the cyber world blowing him up wherever possible
Since I'm about to go under the NDA, I'll report that I've been told that beta keys aren't necessary; by which possibly (update: certainly) is meant that buying a founders package automatically goes around the need to have a beta key (since I'm pretty sure I didn't dream that the site kept talking about needing a beta key).
Anyway, I don't think I've disclosed anything that couldn't be found out by anyone just trying to sign up for the program. Hereafter I must be silent. Aside from occasional vague squees perhaps. And also BRING IT UNDERGEEK!!! 8) I have an Atlas now. Atlases are cool.
(But seriously, Grogheads should sign up pronto, although I see several have done so already. I will try not to use all the win I bought to win, as I actually do want to test how to grow from initial buy-in scratch or whatever. I just like having leeway, and I want to reward the efforts of the devs for doing this at all.)
Before I unleash the squee - is there still access to be bought/im not too late?
Oh yes there's still access to be bought.
Whether it will actually work for you, who knows, but Paypal was accepting them yesterday, and some people have had no problems at all.

Cool, then walk tall and always check your rear view mech mirror! ;.)
Speaking of walking tall... ;)
I'll pass along a point of note which I could have read in the public Founders FAQ but didn't (so I also infer this is public information not NDA data). Everyone in the closed beta starts off with the same things (aside from a difference in scrap) regardless of which package is bought. The goodies specific to the two higher packages don't get delivered until the game goes to open beta.
So I won't have my Atlas for a while, even though I have an extra 100K worth of scrap metal to buy cards with. (That's also public information, btw, found on their own webpage: I don't know whether there is an in-game market aside from players dealing with one another, but at the moment pieces of the Mechs as well as pilots are bought in card packages known as STACs, just like a collectable card game. As you might expect those contents are randomized. So it currently isn't like in previous Battletech computer games where you can buy your gear from a market. I don't know whether they're planning to implement this later, and I probably couldn't say yes or no if I did know, since that seems like NDA data.)
While scrap can be burned in Closed Beta, we'll get all our scrap back again once open beta hits, or so says the FAQ. People who buy a Founder's package for early Closed Beta access won't be risking scrap during closed beta while portions of the game are in post-alpha mode. (This allows people who buy in now to play with the scrap in testing without fear of losing its value.)
Update: a publicly available clarification on this from the Founder's FAQ (http://mwtactics.com/forums/index.php?/topic/2378-founders-faq/) (accessible from the screen where people can buy Founder packages) -- once open beta starts all progress will be reset to square one, at which time the extra goodies will also be unlocked. So if I conquer all human worlds before then, don't worry, the game will reset me for open beta. ;) But at that time I'll also get the Atlas that was part of my Founder's package.
So this is an online collectable card game? Pay to win is written all over this one IMO.
I'll certainly be looking into the pay-to-win side of things as I go, although I won't be able to say anything pro or con on that until open beta.
I should however clarify that I don't know yet (although the information may be there and I haven't read far enough) whether STACs actually will be bought with real money or not once the game leaves closed beta. If I can find public information to clarify that one way or another I'll post it; or someone else could beat me to it, I won't mind. :)
Obviously I'm trying to stick to information that anyone could find out from MWT's own marketing without being in closed beta. I fully anticipate that the game will allow players to recover material after a battle, since that's a big point to all previous versions of Battletech.
Update: I have now read confirmation one way or another, but I don't think it's from publicly available material. Will keep looking around to see if I can find public data on the question, as I realize it's an important issue. (Presumably once the beta goes open, then all info will be allowable.)
Update 2: I have now read confirmation on one of their public forum pages (https://mwtactics.com/forums/index.php?/topic/1657-1129-welcome-to-mechwarrior-tactics-a-primer/) (I signed out to make sure I wasn't reading something locked to the beta) -- players can buy in-game C-bills with real money and use this currency to buy things in-game. Scrap is also an in-game currency earned in various ways, and can be used to buy STACs as well as other items. Not all items can be bought with scrap, but the implication is that this is limited to a few specialty not-game-winning items.
The devs are aware that the game may devolve into paying-to-win, and are looking for ways to minimize it.
A point I hadn't realized before, but which I had wondered a bit about from screenshots: the game's setting starts where Battletech originally started. The Clans haven't invaded yet or any of those other things. This means Mechs which are now regarded as outdated are still in play (because they aren't outdated yet).
I regard this as a squeeworthy bit of (public not beta) information, although others may wish the game started later during the Clan invasions of the Inner Sphere.

I suppose you could look at it that way, although everything has a point value and the matching system uses that. So, theoretically, you're still only playing people around the equivalent power as what you're using.
I believe that your match winnings include the in-game currency with which you can buy further "packs". So you're not forced to constantly cough up cash for new stuff, I suppose. Pretty much the same FtP model that everyone else uses (minus "Gold Ammo"?).
I was introduced to Battletech before the Clans invaded. I still have my 3025 Technical Readout ;) Keep up the impressions though. If there is a CCG like atmosphere and mechanic, I'm digging that.

Can't give much other than what's commonly known. It has an NDA right now, so the details are all TSNS (Top Secret Ninja Sh*t).

It's certainly being pitched that way, and I assume thats how they're wanting to make their money.. but for me, I'm not massively competitive in nature, and I don't care about winning against all and sundry on the Internet, whether they've got the money to fund their uber-mechs or not,
it is solely a (simultaneous) turn based game where I can move around a hex landscape and then unleash hell-fire with some nicely modelled Mechs! All the other competitive pay to win nonsense means nothing to me. If it was a single player game with a storied campaign, I'd be a very happy bunny indeed, however, it is what it is, and it's about the best (in terms of presentation and style) that we have for knocking a few Mechs together :)

I never did the paper version at all, although I certainly saw the game material back then. I got in with the computer game series about the Crescent Hawks; I don't recall if that was set before the Clan invasions. (In fact I recall almost nothing about that game in its plot details.)
Since the timeframe is public knowledge, I will squee a bit about how the autocannon on my mech last night was single barrel only. ;D Not that I used it; I trimmed it off and stacked on some heat sinks and extra missile ammo instead. (I prefer much smaller autocannons, and that one was size 20.)
I can't get into gameplay specifics of course. But the public material shows the gameplay isn't a cardgame. It's more like the recent Dreadnaught game. In fact at the time (a week or so ago) I praised that game for being in effect MechCommander with destroyers and battleships, wishing there would be an update to that game series. WHY DOES GOD NOT TELL ME IN ADVANCE WHEN HE'S IN THE MOOD TO GRANT MY WISHES!?!?
On a related note, how did the Mechwarrior simulator game turn out? That looked terribly promising and then a portentous silence fell. Does anyone know?

Yep, the devs are quite public about wanting the experience to mimic a minatures battle (although in a WEGO fashion) with the computer handling the calcs.
I can't comment pro or con on how well the CCG aspects fit that notion. About as well as I expected so far--that seems vague enough. ;) But the public marketing so far accurately indicates that area of the game has nothing directly to do with the actual combat.
I have seen nothing yet in the public material indicating there may be a single-player story campaign (for whatever that may be worth). The PR material does indicate that a player can sort of create his own campaign in single-player by building up a mercenary unit and going out on jobs. Scrap is awarded even for a loss, which is part of how the devs are planning to tamp down the pay2win threat. Matches are point graded, too, as noted above, so no one needs to get into a fight with someone more effectively blinged out if you don't want to.
so im trying to buy access but i cant until my email address is verified - ive clicked on the link 3 times in the last 5 hours and it says a verification email has been sent - has it? No
cant buy until verified - Mr P - did you tick or untick the mysterious 'turn email notifications' button - do you have a tick in it or not?
I learned later that button has nothing to do with that kind of email notification (or so I've been told).
A tech resolved my problem before I found a way to try the solution I'm going to suggest (so you may just wish to contact tech support--I can't promise this will work):
Go to the site and sign in. (You should be able to do that without email verification.)
Go to the forums with the forum tab.
Just above the search field on the right upper side of the forum screen, you should (may?) see three little blue hyperlink icons. The one furthest rightward should be your username with a dropdown arrow. Click on that. (If you don't see that or can't find it, just skip the rest of this and contact tech support.)
This will (should?) bring up a big status update field, underneath which are a number of smaller hyperlinks. Find "My Settings" and click that. (On my list it's the top right of the two columns.)
There should be a new set of tabs on the left now (with a new screen). "Notification options" should be near the bottom. Click that to open a new window.
Make sure the community admin notification is checked (at the top of that new screen). I've also checked email options (instead of notification list although both are possible to check) for all the first group and all the last group. There's a drop menu and checkbox for when notifications are to be sent, too (near the top of this window, beneath the first checkbox), and I've set that to immediate.
Save your settings at the bottom of this page.
Now go back and try having the system resend email verification. It shouldn't take more than a minute or two for it to come through, so if you don't see something in 15 minutes (on the outside) fill out and send in a support ticket here (https://mwtactics.com/contact).
Note that a brief interruption of service was scheduled about an hour ago today, so that may be affecting things, too.

Welcome to the bughunt. :)
(That's public knowledge on their own FAQ, btw: the game is still full of bugs and features that probably won't be activated until open beta. They kind of hide that under a small button under the REALLY LARGE COLUMNS AND BUTTONS ABOUT BUYING IN ;), but it's still public knowledge and something potential closed beta buyers ought to clearly understand first. I can't talk about what is still buggy of course.)

In other news.. I've seen some scuttlebutt about a persistent universe being added in the future, where players run their own Merc company & negotiate contracts with the Inner Sphere factions. That would be excellent if it's implemented.
They released a beta gameplay vid preview too:

Just came across this announcement on Facebook:
Open Public Stress Test - August 20-23 (https://www.mwtactics.com/forums/index.php?/topic/6477-open-public-stress-test-august-20/)
QuotePublic Stress Test
Grab your friends and join us for the MechWarrior Tactics first public stress test! This 3 day event is open access, which means that for the first time ever, everyone is welcome to play MechWarrior Tactics without requiring Beta access.
If you haven't already, signup on our website. From August 20 at 9am EDT until August 23 at 9am EDT you'll be able to access MechWarrior Tactics whether you're in the Beta or not!
The purpose of this stress test is to observe how the backend infrastructure of MechWarrior Tactics reacts to a large influx of players. We appreciate your patience should we find any issues during the test, as our developers may require unexpected downtime or a server reset. This will include a full wipe of user progress, inventory, and currencies (but we'll re-grant you some starter currency!) as we continue to review the game economy. After the stress test, players will again require beta access to play MechWarrior Tactics.
Since we are still in the Closed Beta testing phase, our NDA still applies. We kindly ask that you do not spread your experience beyond our forums or post screenshots/videos of MechWarrior Tactics, as the game is incomplete and is in active development. A screenshot today might look a lot different than a screenshot tomorrow, and we trust that our community can respect our craft by holding off with personal reviews until we're at a point that we feel accurately embodies our general vision for MechWarrior Tactics.
Might give it a try!
Continuing NDA + public stress test == dividing by the square root of negative one. :o

I thought that a bit odd, too. Oxymoron involving "Non-Disclosure Agreement" and "Public Test"? ;D
