Yes...yes...we're all sick of zombies by now. But this is one of the few zombie games that still seems really interesting. It reminds me of Saints Row...but with zombies instead of hookers. :D
Part 2:
QuoteAn Evolving World
State of Decay is an open sandbox world that develops in real-time, dynamically generating content based on your actions, the choices you make, and the ever-increasing zombie threat. Decide where you'd like to set up a fortified safe haven for you and other survivors you've rescued, then form raiding parties to gather resources and create supply chains. Use the materials you've gathered to develop your community as you see fit, but be careful — resources will deplete as you pillage areas, and zombies are attracted to noise and activity. Take up the offensive by assaulting hordes before they reach your settlement, or focus on improving your defenses against the massed zombie attacks. Every choice and every action matter in this fully simulated, evolving world.
The Xbox version is set for release in June, so PC can't be far behind!
I am actually not sick of zombies. Bring it on 8)
DRM = Windows LIVE?
That they removed the planned coop feature is a big fail, though. >:(
Some more info here:
Have to admit: it sounds like it might be quite good.
The base building aspect looks cool.
It does look very interesting.
Looks like we have a real hit on our hands:

QuoteWhat's next for "State of Decay?"
We're currently working on a PC version for release on Steam. Fortunately it's been in development alongside the Xbox 360 version since Day 1, so we just need to integrate with the Steam platform and add native support for keyboard and mouse control. We'll also continue to issue Title Updates at a fast pace to refine game balance and fix bugs.
Beyond that, we're laying plans for the future of "State of Decay" right now. There's an incredibly sophisticated simulation engine driving the world of "State of Decay" — we call it FateEngine — and it gives us a platform to do much more with the game. For a start, I can tell you we're working on a sandbox mode designed to be a pure survival simulation. Beyond that, all I can say is we pay very close attention to what fans of the game are asking for, and their needs will largely guide our development priorities, so stay tuned.
Looking forward to it!
It is also nice to see devs committed to the long term support of their product. These guys are posting almost daily updates about patches, new features, etc. That counts for a lot with me.
Been playing the demo on my 360, loving it so far. The only thing holding me back for buying it is that I'm not really a console gamer and am not really comfortable with a controller.

Not really. Sure it would be cool, but I think it would lose something by turning it into a co-op game.
Looks like the PC community will finally get their chance to give this well received game a shot...probably in time for Halloween, too (what a coincidence :) ):
Greetings, PC Players! The Steam Release Date Is… (http://undeadlabs.com/2013/09/news/greetings-pc-players-the-steam-release-date-is/)
QuoteTomorrow.
Let me back up a little: Greetings, PC players! Our Early Access version hits Steam on Friday, September 20th.
The price is twenty bucks, same as the Xbox 360 version. Those willing to throw in with us at Undead Labs and your fellow early adopters will automatically get the final version, completely free, with no need to restart, when we officially launch later this year.
What you’ll see this Friday, if you choose to join forces with us to make the PC version kick ass, is a test version. It’s not ready to be reviewed. It will not be perfect. It may still have crashes. What it won’t have is a keyboard and mouse interface…not at first. Why not? Over the next however many weeks, we will be putting up versions of the keyboard interface and using your comments and feedback to make it awesome. Right this minute, the Early Access version requires an Xbox 360 controller (or a compatible 3rd-party controller, although we haven’t done much testing with those yet).
This process is not for everyone. Casual players, the easily frustrated, and the short of time should NOT get the Early Access version. Hey, I am all three of those things, y’all. Those are not criticisms. It’s just that we want everyone to have the experience that best suits their needs. You all deserve the best, so if you’re not into giving feedback, just wait a few months and play the final version after we make it great.
And it will be great, with the help of the rest of you — the hardcore early adopters that made State of Decay into something huge.
Who’s in?

what forum do ya think yer posting on man?
Is this a First-Person RPG? Or just a shooter?
Third person view and no it's not just a shooter, it's meant as a zombie survial sim and though not perfect, it's definitely the step into the right direction. Good game
It's out on Steam! :)
Damn the game is hard!
The zombies are endless, and are very very active during the night (and really roused up by a couple of gunshots if I might add).
Plus Melee weapons break every second and are rather rare.
I'm trying to get an idea how it plays, being more of an RPG slug and not so much a button-mashing action twitcher.
Haven't checked the 'Tube to see if there are any decent length gameplay vids yet. I just assumed that since it was a console game that there wouldn't be any.
Mind you there's no official support for mouse and keyboard right now, though it can still be played using them.
The tutorials and on-screen help still show the X-Box controller setup.

I have a 360 controller for use on my computers. Besides, I believe the mouse & keyboard controls are what they're working on, right? The reason it's in "Early Access"?
I just wanna know what the gameplay is like. Sounds like it may be something akin to the
Stalker series, in that it's a shooter that has some inventory management, survival style (food, ammo, etc?). But other than that, the gameplay is pretty much just action shooter?
I did enjoy what little bit I could play of the Stalker games but the low FOV and way movement was displayed gave me a nasty headache. Since this is a console port, I can almost guarantee it's FOV is probably stuck at 70 degrees or less, and the ground looks way too close when you're running. *vomits from motion sickness* I wish this weren't an issue for me, but I never know until
after buying. :'(
Luckily there is a fairly large amount of people who are effected the same as I, with these types of games. So some of them will eventually start complaining if it's a problem. Need.. paaatience. :P

Yeah, they are still working on mouse and keyboard. Also, the devs said they are adding better graphics options for the PC, so maybe we will see a POV of more than 70.

On page 1 of this thread, I posted two lengthy gameplay demos. They are from the pre-release beta, but the basic gameplay hasn't changed.
EDIT: here is another lets play vid:

So.. it's not really a "sandbox" style right now, but they're in the process of making it (if the scuttlebutt is true). Anyone know if that will be DLC or something?

From what I remember, they were putting the finishing touches on sandbox a few weeks ago. Here is what sandbox will be like:
http://undeadlabs.com/2013/07/news/enter-sandbox/
Here is the sitrep on the PC pre-release build:
QuoteReminder: Early Access means things may go wrong. Early Access is not for people who dislike games in testing. We appreciate very much all of you who have chosen to throw in with us and play knowing there are issues. Here are the issues you should be aware of for today:
Display issues:
Games UI does not display well in 4:3 aspect ratio
The 480p setting under 16:9 incorrectly sets to 480p at 3:2 which strangely looks extremely similar to 4:3.
If you accidentally set your display settings to something your system doesn't support, delete your user.cfg file.
Map identifiers can appear cut off at the edge of the screen in 1080p
We incorrectly will put up a warning that the GeForce GTX 275 is an unsupported card
Steam UI - Interaction outside 'Big Picture' mode will require keyboard and mouse.
The keyboard and mouse are not configured for the title at this time. If you are curious and patient you can find what buttons are currently mapped to what. It...makes for creative gameplay?
Graphical anomalies will occur, outline around characters in certain lighting, shadows can appear corrupted during certain times of day.
Our min-spec video cards mentioned will run, however expect around 15fps on the Intel HD 3000 and the Radeon HD 2600 XT. The GeForce 9600 GSO runs fairly close to 30fps.
The publisher/developer movies that play at launch, will not be visible when running dual monitors.
Gameplay and client
Vehicle physics are a little light compared to the console version.
The zombie eyes appear a more greenish hue.
The loot system is a bit different, and still getting retuned.
Vehicle headlights in the game appear annoyingly bright
Exiting after you play can cause a crash. Use the task manager to close the game.
If you are cycling through the leaderboards, you may crash.
Audio
Some voiceovers will not be audible. (Setting up an outpost, some survivors who to join you, etc.)
Music is missing from the front end main menu.
Excellent. Good to hear a sandbox is on the way. I will probably pick it up once they get that in there.
I've still not seen anything about whether it will be DLC, a separate standalone, a price increase, or whether it's included in a current purchase of the pre-release version.
Geez.. you can tell we've been DLC'd and Re-release overkilled when this question comes to mind so often. ;D

It is only SP. They were going to do a co-op expansion but they cancelled the project because of the tremendous cost it would have required to implement it properly. They said they'd rather add good content to the SP game than put buckets of cash in a co-op project that they weren't at all sure they could pull off properly.

Believe they were also using SoD as a test bed for a future MMO. Why implement MP into a game when you know you plan to launch an MMO later?
Going to hold off until they implement mouse and keyboard support. One of the reasons I never got it for the 360 is that I can't for the life off me get used to the clumsiness of a controller. As soon as the implement it, day 1 purchase for me.
Tome Chick did a few really good write ups on Quarter to Three about his experiences with SoD a few months ago:

Incidentally, what is this "Rebuild" he was speaking of?
(Incidentally 2, I bought SoD this weekend but haven't tried anything on it yet, being busy elsewhere.)
Too many Shift and Control key combos for an action game.
They need to set the crouching & sneaking stuff to the Z-X-C row. And put in some customizable hot key settings from the feedback I've seen.
Just an observation, not really a complaint, since they've stated that the settings thing will eventually be in there.

I almost pulled the trigger on this over the weekend. Looks really good.
There is a DLC available now SoD - Breakdown. Has anyone picked up on it yet.
Have there been any updates that improves the game, since the last player post was early November. I thinking about picking this up also.
Breakdown strips out the story-related stuff and turns the game into a sandbox. You move from one community to another, each getting tougher, until you're entire community is wiped out, and you get a score based on how long you lasted. I still suggest playing at least the beginning of the story-based campaign, as that is the tutorial.
Depending on how you feel about fast zombies vs. classic shamblers, the Romero mod is essential. It slows the zombies down and makes them more like the ones in Romero's films. There are a lot of other optional changes as well. You can find it at http://www.moddb.com/downloads/george-romero-mod-t16-revival
I discovered and played State of Decay on the PC. Loved it, and I am not a zombie fan. It is a very fun open world game. There is a little less "at stake" under the hood than appears initially, and by this I mean things like base selection and scavenging are not as important as they seem. But for $20, you won't be disappointed in the content or the fun.
I'm glad that the new dlc is adding more sandbox play. I'll definitely be diving back in.
This game is perhaps my unexpected gem for 2013.

I'm wondering whether to pick up Breakdown now or wait for a sale on it.
Does it really add a lot? I finished the "Campaign" game long ago on PC, and found it quite limited.
In answer to a previous question, yes there has been at least one more update since November (maybe two), but I haven't played it since release several months ago. My poor people are likely all eaten by zombies by now (unless they turned off persistent downtime world by default). :)

Persistent world? Ack! I would feel terrible leaving my pixelated peeps alone in a world full of zombies. Especially if they needed me to survive.
The persistent world has been tuned down, not turned off, and unless you quit the game while your base is in rotten shape, nobody will die unless they are killed while out scavenging. I restored a game this morning to find my peeps had made a couple of food and ammo runs in my absence.
^ Agreed. I admire the idea in theory, but in practice it seems guaranteed to ruin the experience. Possibly an artifact left over from an original MMO design...?

I didn't bother picking the base game up until I found out that the sandbox DLC was actually gonna be released. Sandbox is essential in survival RPGs.
While I've not even started State of Decay yet (amongst many others), I'll probably get the DLC shortly after I do. There aren't many canned RPG games that can hold my attention very long so I expect the base game wouldn't be enough.
Thanks to TGB for the Romero mod link!
The persistent world thing freaked me out at first, too. I left it alone for nearly two weeks, and merely had moderately low morale, and some depletion of food and material stocks.
Morale drops can lead to frightening consequences, but the game is pretty good at giving you easy morale boosts. I can't think of a time when I haven't loaded a game and had either a "pep talk" mission with a companion (go out and slay some nearby zombies for fivish minutes), or a "too many hordes" mission (drive around with a pickup for about five minutes). Typically worth 5 - 10% morale boost each mission.
If you are clearing buildings for outposts, and find food stocks, don't loot them. When you set up the outpost, you'll find that it has a food icon. My understanding is that if you have those, your npc people will have to scavenge for supplies less frequently, greatly reducing their chance of dying while on scavenging runs when you are not playing.
I fear the persistent world mechanic is mostly a gimmick to increase the play of side missions. I am interested to see if that changes with the Breakout dlc.

Here's a question for those of you playing SoD. Can you setup gardens and water collection. Or are all consumables scrounged only.
Yes, if you have an open slot in your base, a garden (with upgrades) is one of your choices. I do not even believe the upgrades require a specialist, but they may require a library.
It is, however, a wasted slot, at least in the base campaign. Between your npc scrounging efforts, the supply chain from outposts, and in extremis, your pc scrounging, food is the easiest resource in the game to find.
Also, if you somehow manage to search all the sights at the first town (something Mill?), if you request Lily to search for resources using the radio, the resources you are looking for can appear in previously cleared locations. This leads me to believe that as long as you have enough points to afford the request, the player can force the game to generate whatever resources they need.
Note, this doesn't mean you won't have to fight your way to and from these resources. And food resources are more likely than other resources to be found out in the boondocks. But that's also how I found the crashed jetliner. . .
Is this game working with a mouse and keyboard yet? Working well? The sandbox mode would definitely interest me if so.

I hear they got the mouse & keyboard controls working awhile back.
Yes, works fine for me on keyboard and mouse. And I am somebody who will fail massively without a moderately intuitive keyboard/mouse control scheme.
I occasionally hit "Q" rather than "W" when driving, which has led to some serious problems when I was racing a horde to a car. (Q enters or exits vehicles and building doors.)
Holding left shift triggers sprint.
"Z" is a little awkward for a killing blow.
I almost never crouched, so don't recall if it's "C" or Left-Control.
I'm not going to kickstart Dead State (I think), but it's an almost sure fire release buy for me. Nice find! There's another survival rgp that I found on steam greenlit or kickstarter. Wasn't necessarily zombie-based, but certainly horror. If I can track it down, I'll post it.
I've been following Dead State since pre-kickstarter days and was one of many begging them to go that route to get the damn game moving. I have a lot of hope for it. I'm currently dealing with my zombie fixation by playing 7 Days to Die, which is in Alpha 2 status. It's decent, but a lonely world as there are no NPC's so far (supposedly that will change in Beta) and I don't play PVP due to the general level of immaturity found in most PVP games.
But I always have room for more zombie love.....the reeking fragrance of State of Decay beckons strongly....

Not if you're a lefty. Re-mapping keys isn't supported so you have to go into config files and manually change keys. When you do, onscreen prompts get all screwed up and display code rather than key prompts.
^Now I've got Left Brained Guilt.
Not your fault, Silent Disapproval Robot.

Should we open a support group for the Keyboard Re-Mapping Impaired contingent on the site? FWIW I use a Razer Naga Epic because I can reprogram awkward keys. Then again, that particular mouse is for righties, so we may have come full-circle.

Witcher 2 allow you to remap controls to the numpad but then improperly display context sensitive QTE prompts on screen which can be very frustrating.
:o I take it back. No better time for support than when one's driven to see others as ambulatory fecal piles.
Like Creed, I am here for you with arms wide open SDR. Hug it out, man.
Sounds like Longblade's got your back, too. Although, quite frankly, with all those arquebuses, he's far more pointy. Don't want to toot my own horn too loudly, but I'm practically hugalicious in comparison.

If you look closely you'll see one is a wheellock. That's high tech, man.
Speaking of which......

Lol, Gimme Shelter needs to be in more soundtracks. It'll definitely be playing for my Dead State.
Bought State of Decay last week on steam sale for $10 with all DLC. Having a great time with it. Love the open world, exploration, and strategy. It has a few quirks, particularly with the interface, but overall a very good game IMHO.

I bought it during the Summer Sale but never got around to putting more than a few minutes into the game. I really need to reinstall it and give it a proper go.
My initial impressions were decent. But it has that low-to-the ground view & small FOV angle that all first-person console games do. So it gave me a splitting headache after a short time. :-\
