Title: Getting Over the Hump
Post by: Gusington on June 03, 2013, 10:15:29 AM
So I have Victoria II - Heart of Darkness and Rise of Flight queued up. Both have steep learning curves and intimidate me. How do you all deal with learning new complex games and not getting frustrated and giving up?

I've had my eyes on ROF for some time now, this will be my "next" air combat flight sim, can't wait to see how the bomber campaigns in both sides go.

Are you sure that's not you in the CCCP shirt?

I played through a couple of the basic flight tutorials a few months ago and just started to get decent when I switched over to something else. I am determined to learn it this time, all the way through. But learning complex games like this is harder than it used to be.

I agree when I was younger I would eat manuals for breakfast but now i normally fall asleep just past the introduction :(

Yes, it is.

I find that I tend to stick to the familiar more so now than in the past.  I played a lot of WWII/WWI flight sims in the past so, for me, Rise of Flight was fairly intuitive and I was able to ease right into it.

By contrast, I just haven't been able to get over the hump with the DCS titles.  I find myself constantly struggling to remember the procedures to set up a specific system or subsystem and I end up shelving the games in frustration.

Same with Sword of the Stars II.  I want to play it but I'm lost when I fire it up and I just can't muster the energy required to learn how to play it.

+1....and it just got worse when I retired. I was thinking how great it will be having time to learn the tough, complex games, but at 62 years old I am finding that more difficult than I ever expected.

Pretty much the same here.  RoF was quite an experience, but conceptually not mind-boggling.  Now I'm mesmerized by CLOD and -- after a few runs with the difficulty up all the way -- I'm playing it like I did RoF and Il-2: without complex engine management and without going online.

So there's one answer -- I play complex games, but with a lot of the complexity turned off.

I'll probably deal with DCS in the same way.

And I've stopped playing 4x space games.

So I guess, that's another way to deal with certain kinds of complexity -- I just don't do it once I see if it is fun or not.

Not necessarily.  Sometimes you struggle a bit but finally get the a-ha! moment and things just start to click.  I had that with the Achtung Panzer games recently.  I mostly just played quick generated battles and avoided the campaigns because I didn't fully understand the operational aspects of the game such as command control, resupply, repair, and reinforcement.

The impetus to write up a campaign AAR is what pushed me to play through the campaign system.  The AAR I've been posting here is one I've writing up as I play.  It is actually my first full play-through of a campaign with the game series ever so I've been learning as I've been playing/writing and things really started clicking around the 4th-5th turn.

I think part of the problem I have with learning new, complex and unfamiliar games stems from the cheap prices and instant availability that the internet affords us these days.  In the days of 3.5" floppies (and earlier) I had more time but less money and, as I lived in a rural area, no local access to software stores.  As a consequence I'd get a new game once every few months so when I did I learned to play it and played the hell out of it even if it was only mediocre, overly difficult, or obtuse in terms of interface or feedback.

Now it seems like I'm buying 5-6 games a month so unless it's something I really, really wanted, I'll put it aside if it's proving too difficult to get into.  I've got dozens of games on my HD or in my library that I really would like to learn to play.  I tell myself I'll get back to them someday and honestly learn to play them (and I even mean it) but the reality is that I really only do get back to maybe 20% of them.

I've run into similar situations and find that reading some good AARs helps.  Even more than that there are some great "Lets Play" series on YouTube that introduce you to game mechanics and help you get a feel for the game.  YouTube videos really helped me learn CKII.

What works for me is not trying to grapple with a really complex game until/unless I'm in the mood to get immersed in the subject.  I'm all about Ancient Rome right now, for example.  So, in addition to playing almost nothing but AJE and HPS's Roma Civil Wars (and soon Gallic Wars) I'm reading a couple of books about the subject, watching documentaries, etc..  I'm reading about the Great Civil War and playing the HPS game scenarios as I reach chapters in the book about the battle.

I find the net effect being that it's a lot easier for me to master the complexities of a game when I'm really motivated to explore the history and "live out" what I'm reading about and watching.  I just can't force myself to learn a complex game (or a not so complex game, for that matter) when I'm not interested in the subject as a whole.  When I am, I find I pick it up much more quickly because I'm thinking about it even when I'm not playing.

This doesn't mean I'll ever be good at some games, but I'll at least learn to play them.  There are very few RTS MP games where I'll ever be anything but cannon fodder; my reflexes will never be fast enough again to do that.  If it's about a subject I'm interested in, though, I'll probably learn it.

I wish I had some valuable insight into this that would help you Gus, but I don't.  The best way I could think of would be to get a friend to play with you.  That way, you can figure things out together.  Plus, you could compare notes and help one another with concepts/gameplay/idiosyncracies that baffle the other one.  I would offer to guinea pig for you, but it would require voice chat.

I'm a solo player type of guy, you know that. Unless I am playing with online buddies in a game that is not at all complex like Warlock or Left 4 Dead.

So I played about an hour's worth of Victoria II as Egypt, starting a Grand Campaign in 1836. It didn't take long for the Turks to declare war on me. I've got army production and movement down and even scored some naval victories. But trade and economic production are complex. For example...how do I build a factory?

I switched between getting smacked around in Victoria II to wrestling with my TrackIR and trying to get it to work in Rise of Flight with the help of Tuna. I got the interface setup but the TrackIR didn't seem to be working in game. The little green light was on saying the camera was active, but I would move my head (like an idiot) and nothing would happen in game.

I think I have taken on too much complexity for one evening. I am tempted to buy the newest Tomb Raider and stare at digital bewbs...

I think that's why I'm finding racing to be a great gaming experience.  I know how to drive so now it's just a matter of learning the tracks and the best way to navigate them at high speed.  Fun and exciting.

I haven't played a driving game...ever. 15 years ago I was tempted to buy the first Gran Turismo for the first Playstation but I bought Civ II instead and played it for like 3 years straight.

My thing here is that I know if I can just get over the hump in Victoria II or Rise of Flight they will become go to games for me that will last years and that is valuable to me since games like that are rare.

Well good luck in your brain racking experiment.  I thought I'd like Vicky II as well.  I quickly realized I didn't like it and moved on.  TBH I only really like to play 2 paradox grand strategy games.  CKII and EU:Rome.

I actually put CKII aside to learn Victoria II because that's the era I'm into now. CKII strikes me as easier. I hope.

In Rise of Flight I may have no hope :(

I think CKII is just more interesting because you have so much direct imput into what happens with your dynasty and it's rise or fall.  I never, ever felt anything I did in Vick 2 really mattered at all.

What in the world do you find some complex about RoF?

It couldn't be easier.  The planes have almost no gauges.  All you have to do is fly, point your nose at the bad guy and pull the trigger.

You have a map to show you where you are, and if you turn off complex engine management, once you push the throttle to the stops for the most part you can leave it there until you land, where you just pull it back into your lap.

I'm not getting the complexity here, Gus.
Title: Re: Getting Over the Hump
Post by: Gusington on June 04, 2013, 08:09:21 AM
Yeah but you're a pilot. I'm not. I just find keeping my plane airborne more challenging and my control of the plane more difficult than it should be. I don't know...maybe I'm thinking too much. I know I can simplify everything in RoF too but I don't want to make it too arcadey. It doesn't help that I haven't flown a sim since I was a kid.

Added to the above whining is the fact that I was trying to get my TrackIR fo work last night amongst other things and it was not cooperating.
Title: Re: Getting Over the Hump
Post by: Bison on June 04, 2013, 08:32:03 AM
Gus this might be something as simple as what kind of kit are you using to fly.  I've only got brief experience with RoF.  First time I tried to fly I was using one of those $20 joysticks and struggled a lot to keep the plane airborn let alone attack the enemy.  I think purchased a decent HOTUS and the flying got much, much easier.

Gus, are you getting any response from the TrackIR in-game at all?

Couple of things to check.

First, make sure that you start the TrackIR software before you start up the game.

Second, RoF uses some of the same key bindings that TrackIR uses and this can cause conflicts.

Make a RoF profile for Track IR and remap the F7, F9, and F12 keys to something else suck as up, down, and right arrow.

Third, use a USB connection on your PC tower rather than a USB hub or a USB port on your keyboard.  TrackIR sometimes gets squirrely if it's not getting the full amperage.

Fourth, check your list of supported games just to make sure that Rise of Flight is listed there.  If not, update the game list.

I've attached a copy of my RoF TrackIR profile.  Just unzip it and then place the .xml file in your NaturalPoint/TrackIR5/Profiles/ folder.  Then start Track IR, click the Titles tab about halfway down the left hand side of the screen.  Scroll down to Rise of Flight and click the "default" entry in the profile column and replace it with the Rise of Flight profile.

See!  Toonces is right, RoF's not at all complicated!  Seriously, though, I think it has less of a hump than a full-on wargame because you can be doing something pretty quickly.  Despite SDR's post above, Toonces is right, the serious learning is more about flying and practising than reading and understanding a manual.

I was casting about for a game to go with War and Peace which I'm re-reading at present, and downloaded the Histwar demo.  It's just sat there on the desktop as I know I'll have to read and inwardly digest most of the 400-page manual before doing anything else.  At least with RoF you can play and learn at the same time.

Thanks SDR, TrackIR software was running, and Tuna sent me a profile to use. RoF is listed as supported and I am using a USB connection on the PC tower. I'll have to futz with the key bindings.

Ted it's non of the hardware stuff that gets to me it's the seemingly long time it is taking me to get a feel for RoF. 20 years ago I would have been much quicker. I'm losing patience with myself!

EDIT: I had the track clip on backwards. Derf.

I have not played Rise of Flight - yes, i would have thought it was one of the less complex ones. At least one can just focus on actually flying.

I gave up on any and all DCS World products last year. I bought several and DCS World seemed like a great idea and the combined arms module was appealing, but the game is so dreadfully impossible for anyone to play for anyone who is not already a pilot or must have much time and great dedication. Clearly DCS games require all those other things like track IR and such that turns ones room into something from flight of the navigator , for my laptop and just a mouse and joystick it gave me nothing but sad sad crashes, the types of ones where i have barely been able to get off the ground and then my black shark is just rolling down a hill and i am still strapped in it at the end and able to push some now non-functioning buttons.
And i was only able to get into the air in the first place after hitting some bizarre key combination to let the computer start up the black shark - if not that then i would have spent another hour on the ground just pushing buttons waiting for something to happen! realistic but not fun - after all that then trying to actually do anything with the helicopter and its hundreds of buttons, switches valves levers etc - well... you get the idea
suffice it to say my interest in new complex flight sims stopped there. That and the fact that the dcs world map just seemed so lifeless.
I am enjoying the learning curve on wargames far more than flight sims.

I decided to just jump in with some games and then just check the manual when i come up against something i cant just work out with experimentation alone,  - this though may not work so well as a strategy for like War in the East, where one should learn everything at the start for a serious game. I can imagine that one could go some way in such a game playing it incorrectly and but then lose it all gradually over hundreds of turns so that one may have even perceived their mistake - like a frog in slowly boiling water as goes the oft used analogy.

I haven't played a flight sim since IL 2. I was so bad at that game my AI squadron mates voted me, "Least Likely To Get Off The Ground", and "Most Likely To Spend The Entire War Flying Upside-down". My Japanese squadron mates volunteered me for a Kamikaze mission-- before Pearl Harbor. There was no flight stick or headset that could save me.

Hi Gus,

Have you tried this guide even though its for DCS A-10?

IIRC there are sliders for each axis that will automatically adjust the curve up/down.  No need to drag the points on the graph about unless you absolutely want to.

Fortunately I only had to adjust upward by one notch, on one axis, with mine.  Now I just need to figure out if there's a hotkey for re-centering it because my head always seems to take a new default location a couple minutes into a sim.

Thanks cor the above Cougar and Nefaro, just the kind of info I was looking for. Tuna yes the TrackIR is now up and running, thanks again for the profile.

In my original post I mentioned Victoria II also amd I started a game as Egypt on Monday...sadly I haven't been back to it because of mu futzing with RoF and the TrackIR.

If Egypt is too difficult, try Argentina or Brazil instead.

Qin Dynasty (China with POP demand Mod installed) is another good one.

Didn't know you did RoF, now I'm going to have to dig my TrackIR out and play it some more. I've been doing single missions this whole time.

Thanks eyebiter...I took Egypt thinking it would be a good intro but it looks like the Turks want to wipe the floor with me. I do have the economy in the black, at least.

Scott I've been thinking of trying out a few actual missions in RoF instead of continuing to be caught up and obsessed with mastering the tutorials.

And you've never... ever taken pictures of your gaming rig with bottles of personal lubricant/moisturizer beside it either .... so on the Windigo Ordinal Scale of Epic Duh

If you want we can try and do a session in the New Wings server this weekend.. one of the servers 'did' have a scenario where you just play co-op against ai bots... good for training with others.. not sure if it's still like that..

Yes.

It's a game- you don't really die.

Put your lift vector on the bad guy and pull until he's in your gunsight.  Then squeeze the trigger.  Couldn't be easier.

Oh, and stick to German planes (Pfalz and D7 are nice planes) until you get the hang of it.
