Probably first or second week in July like it is every year.

Is it just me, or have things seemed pretty quiet for a while now on the Steam/GG/GameStop/Amazon game sales front? It seemed like there was a time not too long ago where these sales were happening every few weeks. ...or have i just gotten completely spoiled?
I don't know that there are any less sales. Steam does the weekend, weekday, daily sales. Gamersgate does the weekly sale. Amazon does alot of sales too.
There are enough sales to keep me finding things I don't need and can't live without.

Big sales? I dunno... it's probably been just that time of season when there isn't much going on. There
have been regular weekly & daily specials on GG, Steam, etc so the offers haven't really dried up. It probably just seems even slower because most of us already own many of the games that are on sale, or don't even want to bother with the ones that are.
I'm not really sure which games I'll even want to pick up on a big Summer Sale. Seems like I have mostly everything that I've wanted to pick up in the last few years.. at least the ones being sold on these larger retail sites.

I feel the same way, most of the games now are just remakes or the same game with a slight upgrade. It seems like it's just, been there done that one too many times. I think the whole industry is stuck in rut. If it wasn't for free to play and some other on-line games, I think I would have given up gaming by now. There are likely more PC wargames now than any other time in history, yet I can't find one I want to buy.
I discovered the joys of GOG recently and have snapped up Ground Control 1&2, Alpha Centauri, Nexus:jupiter incident and Moo3. At less than $10 a pop...feels like a sale

I think the bigger issue is that we've already bought everything. Sure, a few games will pop up which I really want, but most of the back catalog has already been picked through during previous sales.

I pre-purchase big ticket games in exchange for 25% discounts...prepurchased Rome 2: Total War and CoH 2 that way, don't feel burned on CoH 2. Obviously the jury is out until Rome 2 is released.

Well, Rome 2 is a safe bet I suppose. I have faith in CA.
Same with ARMA3. I bought into that at the alpha level because I know they're going to create gaming goodness.
That's how I felt about CoH2 and I was right, IMHO...no crashes for me and tons of fun. Agreed on Rome 2.

I know I broke one of the cardinal rules w/ Day One Purchase on Big Ticket Title. I even committed the worse sin of paying extra for the 'collectors edition.' Just what circle of gamer's hell this has earned for me, I don't know. I'll guess 5th.
Still, I figured CoH2 was 'can't miss'. I was wrong. Not only because it's a CTD-fest, but because it really doesn't improve in any significant way on the original. I rank the original as one of the best war games of all time (some may think that's crazy, but I genuinely believe it was/is that good). So I'm kinda pissed I blew $100 on "More of the same, only way less stable." Live and learn, I suppose.
Will Rome 2 live up to expectations? Probably yeah, but you never know. We all remember the initial disappointment that greeted Empire TW in release (...the AI unable to launch naval invasions and so forth... Made playing as Britain, well, kinda unchallenging.). still, I agree with those who say the excellence of Shogun 2 bodes well for Rome sequel.

How the hell did COH2 cost $100?!
The 'digital collector's edition' costs a cool $100. It contains 'extra content', mostly unit skins, that I have discovered is decidedly not worth an extra $40 to the already expensive $60 for the basic game.
It's been a long time since I felt gouged and suckered like this. I've slapped down $100 for Gary Grigsby titles, but felt that was justified given the amount of content and he fact that its an indy developer.
I'm pretty damn disappointed and in fact would refund it if I could. Given my huge expectations for this game, that's saying a lot.
I can't argue with what has been going on with your copy of CoH2...technical craptacularity happens. But I can't defend your 40.00 skins purchase either. That's 40.00 that could have been spent on some more skin in a strip club or something. But hey whatevs.
100.00 can be an expensive lesson but you won't make the same mistake again.

Thank you, I try. I hope you get CoH 2 working because beyond the tech issues is some good gaming lurking there. Granted I have not played the original CoH games yet.
Thanks -- believe me, I want to get it working. I'm sure once I can get it to be stable I'll get some enjoyment out of it.
Still, from what I've experienced so far, I'm kind of resigned to the fact that CoH2 disappoints, and it will be up to the modders to create a better experience. It's just hard to see where the sequel represents any kind of evolution over the the original. It frankly doesn't even look that much different. It's marginally nicer looking, yes, but not dramatically better -- which is fine, I guess, since I still think the original looks great, but again, it's a bit of a letdown. And I can't shake the feeling that the vehicles & tanks have a slightly cartoon-ish look that the original definitely did not have.
If CoH2 represents someone's first foray into the CoH franchise, then I can certainly understand why they would consider it a an enjoyable game. But for those who played a lot of CoH original, I think you're apt to have a "Wait, that's all there is??" kind of reaction.

It's not that we are running out of interesting titles.. it's that I already own most of 'em. There is quite a lot of good games out there, but it's never enough is it? :D

If there on sale I say get them. I really enjoyed both Dawnguard and Dragonborn. Some felt Dawnguard was too short but I feel like I got my $20 worth from it.
I see Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion on sale for $13.59. Hope it doesn't go any lower because I think I'm going to breakdown and get it tonight when I get home. And after that I;m just going to close my eyes and turn away. Don't have a lot of spare cash to be spending this month.

Can someone indulge me in a couple of very newbish Skyrim questions:
1. Does the world / enemies level up with you as in Oblivion?
2. Is the character leveling-up system still the arcane one used in Oblivion (where like you shouldn't run too much because you might accidentally level up -- what a pain in the arse) -- ?
3. If you haven't played it at all yet -- worth dropping $36 on? (I can guess the answer,but still...)
Don't Starve and every Pinball FX2 table and table pack that I was missing...and done.

1. IIRC, in vanilla Skyrim level with you up to a level cap that's per enemy type. So a normal bandit will level with you up to say level 16, and bandit boss will level with you up to level 25 (NOT EXACT NUMBERS). I'm probably wrong, TBH I haven't played vanilla Skyrim since the construction kit was released.
2. No. Your skills still increase as you use them. So use one handed swords and your one handed skill gets better. Use bows and your archery gets better. You can still abuse the system, mainly the vanilla enchanting and smithing trees. However, the acrobatics (the skill that leveled when you ran or jumped) has been removed from the game. So running around and exploring won't level you on its own.
3. I have 572 hours played. I at least got my moneys worth and I paid full price. If you like the TES/Fallout games, I would definitely get Skyrim.

Happens during every sale, there.
I recall a year or two ago, when I purchased & gifted a game to someone during a Xmas Sale, it went missing for couple hours. Nothing showed up. So I figured that my checkout didn't actually go through. I purchased it again and the second one went through after about 30 minutes.
Come to find out.. my original purchase showed up some time later on, in my holding area. The first purchased gift never went through in good time and it took quite awhile before it was ever put back in my account (the next day IIRC). It can be a damn mess when they get backed up.
So if it seems that you've made a purchase, but everything isn't showing up.. try to wait it out & see before trying again. At least.. if it's not a Daily Deal. :-\

Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion is downloading at 2.5 to 3 MB/s for me right now. 20% complete. Took 4 attempts to for my purchase to go through.
I was afraid this was going to happen...I pretty much have almost everything I can think of that I want off of Steam. :(
Looking at Counterstrike Complete, though. Anybody still play that? I don't like the multiplayer only aspect, but I could get into it maybe. How does it compare to...well to anything? Can I play it online with just my son and I against bots?

Bioshock Infinite took under two hours to completely download. So...not that bad.

I ended up not getting the Skyrim DLC.... have never finished the original and modded the crap out of it so that distracted me so I need to finish it..... and I am tying to stick to those games I really want and not just buy because something is on sale. Mainly there is one or two I could pick up, but just going to wait and see what happens.

My experience exactly with Oblivion. I feel like I should just make a pact with myself *not* to get hung up modding Skyrim and just play the damn thing as is. But modding is like a drug, esp. with these games that have zillions of them -- you start installing one or two, and then it's "OK I'll add that one as well" and "Oooh look at this, must have," ad infinitum.
And I just know the same damn thing is going to happen with Rome 2

It's a fun game if you're a pinball fan. Some of the tables can be a bit obnoxious simply because the text explaining what to do when you activate something pops up in the upper left...right when you're busy with a multi-ball.

I just grabbed GTA 4.
After perusing the Steam forum, it seems it was actually on sale for a while (strange thing, must not have been the whole time then).
And this has sparked a huge (and justified) rage on behalf of those who pre-ordered only to find the game discounted immediately upon release.

I already said I've realized according to the Steam forum for the game that it indeed went on sale.

Anyway, I just got a popup in Steam telling me that BNW wasn't meant to go on sale and because I paid the preorder price Steam gives me a copy of Civ 4 for free.
Man, I should never check the Steam Sale..... just bought Tropico 4 Collectors Bundle, includes all DLC, on the flash sale for $8.
When am I going to have time to even try it out...... :P

Just don't go into it expecting a remake of the original. I enjoyed it well enough at the time. Some of the mods over at XCOM Nexus made it more to my taste. But now that Xenonuats is on Steam, I don't think I'll ever go back to UE.
As for the Dragonborn DLC for Skyrim. I really enjoyed it. I liked it better then the first one, Dawnguard. Soistheim actually feels smaller to me then the Dawnguard content (Probably because most of Dawnguard took place in Skyrim itself). Story line wasn't anything to write home about, but I found the dungeons challenging.
AND you get to ride a dragon at the end, who can argue with that?
I raged for about 5 seconds over getting BNW for 23.00 instead of 20.00. I am over it now. I made up for it by getting Bioshock: Infinite for 29.99. Getting the Knife of Dunwall for 5.99 now. Also interested in XCOM. Afraid to see what else is lurking on Steam...

The one before was better if you like roaming around to see the sights. The newer one has a much smaller sandbox.

As the 1.13 patch was finally released, I just started a new game today, so I can't comment yet. Much will depend on how the AI behaves, and whether it still feels like a typical RTS click-fest.

It's not totally terrible as is, doesn't kill the immersion for me which is what i judge the graphics by, of course i've never been a graphics wh**e ...maybe because i've never had a cutting edge system.

Steam Summer Sale Update:
First of my purchases:
Brave New World DLC - Managed to grab this while on sale by mistake from Steam.... joined up for some MP with fellow grogs... so far Civ V has turned into a great game, I have just now started to put a lot of time into it and BNW is a very good expansion.
Shogun II DLC - Completed the entire DLC for Shogun II, I am now going to start a proper campaign and see it through.... #ToTheEnd
Cortex Command - I have eyed this for a while after I watched Das play it but did not want to play full price, now it was 75% off I jumped in.
Sanctum 2 + DLC - I really enjoyed the first and after a limited time playing I really like what they have done this time around... it is a great co-op game (anyone interested?)
FE Legendary Heroes Quest Pack DLC - While not on sale, I have been planning to pick up because FE:LH has managed to make me not play a lot of other games.... namely Shadow Magic.

I just bought the Wargame Franchise Pack which contains both games for $22 US. After reading some of the posts here about the AirLand game, I decided to at least buy the first game for $4.99, but decided both for $22 is a good deal.

My complaint about the campaigns is that each individual battle rushes you so much, since each 'day' of battle only allows for 30 minutes of game time before it stops and is continued the next day. On the bigger tactical maps, with many VP zones, it can take a few days before the zone is decisively won (for well-matched forces). The forces get more & more fatigue while doing so and this tends to neutralize their effectiveness for the rest of the campaign since it takes quite a few turns to rest them up, and their R&R can also be interrupted.
I still enjoy the campaigns, although they're more difficult than one-off battles for this and other reasons. This is probably why people criticize the WALB campaigns - because they're more difficult than single battles.
I still think the single battles are pretty fun, too, notably because the 'Deck Building' part of the game lets you play with a lot of different force combinations & units so there can be a lot of variety. The AI is a decent challenge on Normal, for beginners and comes into it's own on Hard IMO.

Thanks Nefaro for the feedback. I pretty much read the same thing about battles in the campaign being too short. When the forces continue the battle on the next day they are fatigued and hence the more difficult it is to win.
I wonder if the reason why everyone is complaining about this aspect of the campaign is because they don't know how to rotate units/armies in battle? Is that the case? If I commit an army to a battle that last for more than one day can I pull them out and put in a replacement army or even substitute individual units in a group?
I think I'm more tempted by OOTP14 which is half price just now!

The idea is to obviously rotate units into the fray & out but in the first couple campaigns (the smaller ones), there isn't enough units available to properly do so while still expecting to push on and achieve a win by the end of the time limit. Perhaps it's easier to do in the larger campaigns because you have more troops, but then again you also have more area to cover so I dunno. I haven't played the larger ones (yet!) because I got caught up in building 'decks' and playing them against the AI in skirmishes so much. That's a good thing because there's still a lot of gaming to be had with it. ;D
Well - I eventually bought Sins of a Solar Empire:Rebellion....I have no idea why because I'm not a huge fan of RTS but I always look at the videos in awe and think it looks pretty beautiful - that and the low price made me feel I had to make the purchase this time.
OOTP14 is definitely on my radar also - but I want to check out the changes between that and 13 before I do purchase - otherwise I'll wait for 15

I'm surprised Wargame ALB is on sale for that price. I figured it would still be too new for a 50% discount. Still I don't regret paying full price for the game. Steam sales are good for the those games I'm on the fence about or wouldn't normally buy. Not sure if they are actually profitable to the developers themselves though. And I'd like to see the guys who did Wargame get paid for their efforts so we can see more from them.

Interesting. Well thanks for your honest input. I think I'll pass though. I was really looking forward to a grand campaign set in all of Europe not just Scandinavia and not a rush job or you lose type of thing. Maybe later when the price drops to 10 or less I will pick this up.

I don't think OOTP14 will get any cheaper than the 50% discount it's currently at, for the next day or so. It'll be at least another year until OOTP15 reaches this pricetag, too. Just a heads-up.
I keep seeing veteran players say 14 is worth getting, even after owning 13, but I guess that depends on whether you play it. It sounds like a fair amount of work went into improving player advancement and other things 'under the hood', aside from some small additions such as the extra International recruiting and player rating change logs.
It's a good bargain on the current $20 sale, but if you can wait another year then no worries.
I've been debating picking up Football Manager 2013 despite the possibility of not playing it much (not a big fan of the sport). My biggest concern, however, is whether I get to participate in any rookie drafts. I don't think most footie leagues even have that, other than the American one perhaps(?) and it's one of my favorite things about these GM sims. Plus, I have Franchise Hockey Manager slowly approaching a finished state and that will probably hold my attention in a couple months, in it's place. I just talked myself out of FM2013 hah! Take that Summer Sales!

You're welcome. I hate the rare occasion when someone buys a game on my recommendation and can't get on with it, so I never recommend a game until I'm sure it's playable. Some people will never be happy with Carrier Command, and when it first came out it really was a mess. It's eminently playable now though.
I picked up Dragon Age Ultimate Edition for $9 and F.E.A.R. with the two DLC for $5. I was tempted to go for FEAR Complete for $14, but everything I read said 2 and 3 sucked so I went with the cheaper option. Given that it is unlikely I will finish even these two games before the Christmas sale, I think I'll be ok with the missing content.
Still holding out for Dead Space to hit 70% off...

I understand why people enjoy it, but I hated it. I'd been buying into all the pre-release hype about it being some kind of "Elite-beater" (which it absolutely
isn't). In actual fact it's just a shoot-em-up with ridiculously simplified trading and a pervasive sense that the universe exists only for the player. Not what I was expecting at all.

Finally the titles and percentages are starting to look tempting enough. My first purchase is Sins of Solar Empire: Rebellion, Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes and Deux Ex: Human Revolution might well be the next ones.

I bought it a long time ago on sale and thought it was ok.... the music and graphics are good, however was a little too easy to advance and I got bored with it. Never tried any of the DLC.

It's a nice game for something a bit different. Definitely kinda fun being a banana republic dictator persona but the meat of the game is building up your island nation whilst keeping most people happy, and doing it on a budget. I'd suggest it for a city builder with high production values and some good humor.
Snagged Rising Sun yesterday. Fallen Enchantress : Legendary Heroes, Gunpoint and Dark Souls are today's haul.
Dark Souls for $7.50 is a no brainer. Playing this game is an unique experience.

If the graphics don't get in your way[there are mods to somewhat improve it] your missing a classic in SS2. Wasn't that series the first FPS/RPG games?

In doing some browsing I noticed that all of the Ironclads games are $0.99 on Steam.
DO NOT buy the bundle option- you can get them cheaper by buying them individually for .99 apiece ($5 vice $15 I think).
What's the verdict? Seems like some decent gaming for less than a Quarter Pounder from McDonald's...
I picked up Universe Simulator the other day when it was a flash sale, but otherwise have bought nothing. Like a lot of others, I just don't see anything I want...
Meanwhile, CMBN/CMFI are occupying what time I have for gaming, which hasn't been all that much, unfortunately.

I thought there wasn't enough to the series to keep it interesting. The sim part is jockeying turn rate and speed for two or three ship divisions. Nothing else. The 'campaign' is just a number of straight-up open sea engagements between these two forces, then you repair ships in between and do it again.
I liked the concept of their original american civil war turn-based one but it needed more work on the game mechanics. Instead, they just started anew with real-time settings, in all their later ones, and it ends up feeling more like you're steering in circles trying to keep your broadsides on each other. :-\ It's no DG or SAI.
I recall at least one person mentioning they enjoyed it for what it is, so my views aren't universal.
And today I bought...absolutely nothing. Finally. ;D
I bought Dirt 3 for $6 and I'm already pissed off about it. It uses GFWL but for some reason, it won't accept an offline profile like all other GFWL games. Unless you create a full GFWL account and stay logged in, it won't save any of your game progress. Hell, it won't even save your key bindings or audio settings. And it's causing my CPU to overheat. Got up to 74C after 20 minutes of play and caused my PC to shut down. This with a 1050W PSU, 2 intake fans, 3 exhaust fans, a CPU fan, and a heatsink.

I picked-up the Dragonborn DLC for half-off. By the way, I got my copy of PC Gamer mag today and they have their top 100 computer games of all time list and Skyrim is No. 1. I don't necessarily agree with this but I'd have to think hard to come-up with a better one.

I would agree that if Skyrim isn't the best game I've ever played, I have to sit down and really think of what I game I enjoy(ed) more.
I wholeheartedly endorse picking up the DLC except Hearthfire, which I haven't tried.
I have the Dragonborn DLC, but my character isn't high enough to go through it yet so I can't help you there.
I ended up buying Deus Ex: Human Revolution as well. No reason not to when it costs about as much as a beer.
bought Dragonborn for £6.99, although my daughter will probably play first as my characters are puny compared to hers....

Dawnguard also added the etherium wars quest line which is one of the best side quests I've seen in the game.

Well as of right this minute...I've bought Knights of the Old Republic 2 (going to download the restored content mod and play it...I'd always heard it was incomplete and never played it even though KOTOR 1 was one of my favorite games of all time.

I'm eyeballing the Empire at War gold pack. I already have the first game, but you have to put the disk in to run it...I'm considering just ponying up the $13 to get both games and not have to deal with the disk check anymore...

Titanic got blasted by everyone and I haven't found a positive endorsement yet, but it seems like a game I might like despite all the criticism. Game of Thrones I have mixed feelings about. KOTOR I & II disks, along with the original
Empires At War. I was thinking of firing up EAW again the next time I need an SW strategy fix, since ye olde SW Rebellion is getting so old it has an 'E' on the end.
Also.. I had a problem running KOTOR II on the CD/DVD version, with WinVista a few years ago so never got to play it much. It may well be a coding issue but at ~$3.39, I'll take a gamble.
Now that I have enough games to last for two years of straight play time, I'll have to stock up on supplies and disappear for awhile to experience all of them. :-\
Curious, is it worth getting both KOTR 1 and KOTR 2, or should you just stick with KOTR 2? Anybody have an opinion?

Well, I just bought Dragon's Lair.
Like many, I have fond memories of playing it- but mostly watching other people play it- back in the 80's. I was about 13 when it came out and let me tell you, it was painful dropping $1 a play on a game that lasted about 30 seconds before it was all my lives were gone...so now, 30 years later, I will have the chance to finally finish the game!
The 13-year old me is very happy right now!

I grabbed Hearthfire DLC for Skyrim since it's the only one I don't have, and I bought Dead Space since I've been keeping my eye on it till the end.
There are a few other games I sort of wanted, but they can wait. Final damage was probably on the order of $75 or so for the whole sale. Not too bad, and I have a ton of new games that I don't even know when I'll get around to playing!
To celebrate all the new games I have, I think I'm going to go outside and read a book for a while. ::) I have quite a backlog of those, as well. :-[
Pulled the trigger on Kerbal, and also grabbed the Joe Danger pack. The $10 and change I had in my Steam wallet from selling game cards and purely cosmetic TF2 items took the edge off. ;D
I was also going to pick up The Showdown Effect...except the demo doesn't work. Won't play at all. If you can't get your demo to work, I am not giving you money for your damn game.
