Title: Title Bout Boxing
Post by: Teignnews on June 18, 2013, 02:57:36 AM
A new version of Title Bout Championship Boxing has just been released. Originally from Comp-U-Sports then later OOTP. Based on the Avalon Hill original I believe. If you remember the original, may be worth a look.

Seems like this new version had minimal changes and was more about positioning the game to a new engine for future enhancements.  Think i saw someone state it was more of a new paint job.  Always wanted a good boxing sim but when I tried the demo, didn't seem like you had control over much, it was more about watching the results.  Maybe now setup on the new engine will provide greater enhancements for the future.

I had the original boardgame and have since bought all of the computer versions. The price of $9.95 for this last reincarnation softened the blow for me.

I actually had a better time playing this last version. In all the others I argued with the placing of the boxing greats in their 1-14 ratings. These newer ones seem to be better, at least to me.

The first game I played of this new one I had Sonny Liston stop Marciano with cuts. I had never seen a higher fighter  lose to a below rated fighter in all of the other computer versions.

Which is why I really liked the boardgame. Their were many times that wins or losses were flukes.

I own the boardgame and though I rather enjoyed it, I haven't played it for years.  I have tried the demo's of previous PC versions and for reasons mentioned above (lack of user input) they never caught on.  How is this new one different Magnus; is it more true to the boardgame* or is the only real fun in matching up hypothetical bouts while merely sitting back (mostly) to see the final outcome?

* and if my recollection of the boardgame is incorrect, let me know but it seems that it was more interactive than the PC game.  Maybe it was just merely the flipping of the action cards?  Don't recall honestly.

The actions a player can do are just like in the boardgame. You get X amount of rounds to " go for the knockout" or " box defensively ", depending upon the boxer.

Besides flipping the cards there wasn't much to do per round in the boardgame once you had picked a fighters strategy.

The previous computer renditions seemed to be stuck in the mode of this is each fighters greatest night. So like I said a 14 would always beat a 12. You can also use cornermen and cutmen in the computer game along with choosing when in a fighters carreer the fight is. I have never used the latter so I am not sure how it relates to reality.

The first two fights I did in this version were Liston sopping Marciano on cuts, and Jeffries outpointing Johnson over 15 rounds. I never had results like that before. Even when i fiddled with some of the fighters stats before I was never able to get a lesser fighter to win.

The only thing I do not like, is the arbritrary placement of some fighters. Ezzard Charles has no Heavyweight listing just a light-heavyweight. So when fighting a heavyweight he gets a a few stats knocked down before the fight.

Looks interesting but is there some reason for 2 licenses being the default purchase option?

I've been thinking about grabbing a copy of the boardgame, so I might get this instead.

However I'm quite tempted to print Legends of Boxing, which is a free print and play sports sim along similar lines. Looks like it has a decent amount of date available for it too:

This release was all about rewriting it to use the cross-platform PISD libraries. It is basically the same as 2.5. If you own a previous version you can get this latest one for $10. The next version will supposedly have the management/career/rpg stuff that people have been waiting on for about a decade now. Paul, the developer, seems to be more focused on it than OOTP was so hopefully there will finally be movement on it. People make up elaborate universes for their boxing games as it is, but it is a lot of work without the game handling things.

I think the reason for 2 licenses is to allow you to install it on more than one computer. So you could have it on your desktop and a laptop.

Magnus, I'll need to look, but there should be a way to get fighters in their different weight classes. It used to have them that way anyways. I haven't spent much time with the new version, but I need to figure it out so I can have my Hagler - Leonard fight with them in the proper weight class.

Well at least you got to see Hagler and Leonard fight. Even if the judges were blind. :)

Of course Monzon would have beaten them both.

Magnus, I found one way to get the weight class changed for a fighter. If you are in a game, click the fighters locker to open the fighter database. Then search for the fighter you want Click on him to open his record. Click on the weight class, and it should bring up a window showing the classes he has fought in. One of them will be checked as default. Check as default the weight class you want him to fight in.

I just did it to get Leonard to MW to fight Hagler :). Hagler is going to win this time dammit and get his revenge!

E: And Hagler is robbed again. All judges scoring 114-114.

I played the old Avalon Hill game for years and was delighted to find the computer version many years ago. Updates disappeared and it became useless after some time, but I just bought the new title and am installing it now. It was great for what it was. I'll be interested to see how it plays now.
