Looks pretty freakin' cool, I have to admit.
So is anyone else looking forward to this one? More to the point, are we going to be able to get a group of GH'ers togehter to play it?
Of course, I still wish it had a singleplayer mode. However, it's hard to argue with it being free...
I am really psyched for this. Open beta this summer so hurry up and register mech pilots.
I am psyched but having never played a MW game I don't know if this is what I should play as my first entry into it...don't think I have much choice though.
Also, I'm eager to see how "roles" work out. They keep saying that it should be very possible to be an effective scout Mech, a prospect that has me very excited!

Well I suck at these games too -- a lot -- so if we find we can't keep up with the more skilled players, we can always just slap-fight each other. :)

Okay...? (Care to elaborate on that comment?)
the video shows a mech shooting at the other mech's left arm for like seven times.
one would guess that those machines are masters of destruction. instead the fighting
looks rather like a boxing thing.

Good point.
IIRC the Mechwarrior series is really all about heat build up. Every move and action builds up heat. The less you do, the faster you cool. So it's supposed to be a trade-off between taking action and risking breakdown.
How well that translates to an FPS style of gameplay remains to be seen. In theory all the tech upgrades will add a nice RPG element. In practice one does wonder how many missiles a mech can take before it explodes.

I played a little
Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries with my friends/roommates back in the day, and it seemed to handle the heat factor pretty well (including reflecting how it was represented in the original pen-and-paper version). Unless your Mech sported mostly ballistic weapons and/or it had a gazillion heat sinks, you took a real risk launching an alpha-strike! Hopefully MWO has been constructed so that the experience is similar in that regard.
Stumbled over a couple more videos today:
Preview (http://www.ign.com/videos/2012/05/07/mechwarrior-online-video-preview)
MechLab (http://www.ign.com/videos/2012/05/07/mechwarrior-online-mechlab-developer-breakdown)
Still looks promising, I'd say. If the gameplay is anywhere near as good as the visuals, I could foresee losing many hours to this one...

Anyone have a beta invite for Mechwarrior Online?
NDA could prevent beta players from disclosing status as beta tester...just saying.
I can't say to much about it.....
I did however buy the legendary founders package.
I'm curious about this one. I would buy a founder pack... but I have too many online games as is.
Have they announced a solid release date yet?
Sometime this summer for the open beta. The "Live" game release is still TBA.
i have made several test runs, my Spinnenkopf Mech with a Plasmakanone 5, lvl 3 gun still isn't able to kill the mounted shoulder of a Fliegenmeister Leicht Mech.
this is kind of a Spielverderber bug, it brakes the game for me.
Razor is developing a HOTAS for Mechwarrior online with an additional build in screen that looks like it'll track damage to your mech and maybe a targeting map. This thing looks awesome!!! Here are some links to check it out.

I really hope they decide to release that as an actual product and not simply a demo/concept. Would be even better if it works with Hawken as well.
If there's enough interest, will there be a Grogheads Clan?
^My purchase of the game depends on it...even though I too am drooling over this. I really wish there was some kind of SP component.
I think this is a very real possiblity. I'm sure there will me many of us lured into this game.
I'll be playing for sure.
I'm curious how gaming clans will work with the in game factions. Will we all have to belong to the same faction in order to group together? Unless they somehow allow faction changing, I'm going to be holding out for The Clans to be released.
Oh yeah. I'll be on this like the stench of urine on a homeless man.

Awesome for you! And glad to see you back :-)
I've had a lot of fun in the beta, though I will be glad to see some new mech chassis.
I'd really like some more maps. Playing the same 2-3 maps gets a little boring. Larger battles with more then 10 mechs per side would be cool too.
The only balancing issue I have is that LRM's are way too accurate and do too much damage IMO. A team of all missile boats can pretty much pound the opposition into dust before you ever get to knife fight range. I don't think they were planning on balancing the team making system until the game went into open beta, so I could just be getting unbalanced teams.
Its only cosmetic, but it is a little annoying that the Mechs do not visually represent the loadout you have. Especially since Microprose was able to do that way back with Mechwarrior 3.
I often run across Catapults who have swapped their machine guns for Gauss cannons and their PPC's for small lasers. So you see these tiny red beams come from those huge cannons and a massive Gauss round coming from the little machinegun.

Hawken look really good from the E3 coverage I saw of it. I'm really looking forward to it as well as MWO.
Yea, republic, I've seen that. I hope they patch that sort of stuff in at a later date. For me small cosmetic things like that are not a big deal to me. I wish I could take the missile pods off my founders mech and add a PPC arms to it.
Registered for the game, made a few forum posts and got a closed beta invite. Currently have access to 4 trial mechs - Jenner, Hunchback, Catapult and Atlas.
The 35 ton Jenner JR7-F trial mech has 4xMedium lasers, jump jets, and 10 heat sinks. One group fire shot spikes heat to 33%, 2 shots to 66%, third shot will overheat and shutdown the mech.
Movement controls are W A S D keys to control direction and speed. Mouse moves the torso twist. Space bar activates jump jets. Takes a while get used to moving in one direction and firing in another.
Brief AAR
Played 5 matches so far, died the first four times while trying to figure out the controls and movement. Heat management and shot placement will take a while for new players to learn.
Mission 5 - Two light mechs Jenner and Commando followed a ravine along the edge of the map. Circled around to occupy the enemy base. To capture enemy base keep your mech in close proximity long enough and the base falls.
Soon one enemy medium Centurion responded. While doing the 'circle of death' accidentally collided with the other friendly light mech. Both of us fell to the ground. The enemy Centurion destroyed the Commando light mech with the founders tag. Was able to stand back up and locate the enemy Centurion. Two group fire medium laser volleys destroyed the 50 ton enemy mech. Captured the enemy base before any other enemy mechs could respond.
That's strange, I've seen jenners fire off all 4 laser multiple times. If I play smart I can usually heavily damage or destroy and atlas In my hunchback. I can also do the same to catapults if I get inside LRMs effective range. But those flea bites jenners put out have been the death of me. They usually to do me what I do to an atlas, they can turn inside allowing for a shot in the back.
I want to try out a new catapult build his week. I'm going to take off the LRMs and replace them with SRMs. With 4 medium lasers I should get a nice short to medium range punch.
Seeing as they're still inviting testers, I signed up too.
Could've sworn I had signed up before, but evidentally not. So many games.. :o

Yea you can. Not as much as I'd like. Every mech has a certain number of hard points for certain weapon types. Using my catapult as an example, the one I have has 2 missile pods for arms, and 4 hard points for laser. I can put any missile in those pods. What I can't do is change the hard point type. For instance there is a catapult that has lasers on the arms. I can't take those arms replace the missile pods on my first catapult. My first catapult is my founders catapult, so given the current set up, it will always rely on missiles as it primary weapon.
The other primary things you can customize are ammo, armor, engines, heat sinks, etc. It's a balancing game between weapon ammo, protection, and heat generation. Right now there doesn't seem to be an optimized build for everything like there is in most mmo's. I haven't looked into it too much.
Excellent! Thanks for the info.
That's pretty cool. I had hoped it would have as much customization as the old MW games, and sounds like it does.
I stopped playing mechwarrior online, and deleted the game off of my hard drive.
Yes, I was under a non-disclosure agreement. I feel that I am no longer bound by that, as I am certain to never re-install this product again.
Let me first say that this will likely be a commercial success, and I wish them well, and that many players will find that this game is PERFECT for them. This may even be the majority of players.
....but....LRB boats are dominant. LRM is long range missiles. Missiles that have a 100% chance to hit, after being launched, with over a 1000m range.
You just cannot win with any other type of mech. It just isn't possible. 3-4 of these big bastards, all trained on you, and you are stun-locked/battered to death.
If they have someone that can see you, all LRM boats can launch on you.
As a light, medium OR heavy non-lrm boat, what do you do? You die. Simple..then you save your money to get an LRM boat.
LRM boats are so OP that I quit the game...and I am absolutely sure that this will be fixed, or the game will die. It will have to.
So..there we sit. Sue me for breaking the NDA, I don't give a shit. The game is broke.
You are right, mass LRM missiles are incredibly unbalancing. I think part of it has to do with the match making system. They've admitted that its still very much a WIP. They needed something to match people for an event, and they threw something together. I can't be certain but they may have done at least one balance pass on the match making system. I'm seeing far less of the mass groups of missile boats then I was seeing a month ago. Every mech has a hardpoint for an AMS (anti missile system).
Every game has unbalances like that, especially when its still a beta. As long as they get fixed before the game goes gold, then I'm going to stick with it.
I'd expect that they get nerfed before open beta.. or release.
That does say far too OP. And missiles all hit?! This isn't very Mechwarrior-like. I can see how people wouldn't like to be screwed by the dice-rolls but those massive missile-packs were never meant to all successfully hit every single time.
The target-sharing sounds kinda lame, too. LRMs are supposed to be a sniper-style weapon, right? Not cruise missiles. :P
Anyone else in the beta having problems since the last patch?

Awww Yeah.

Open Beta is running as fast as it's mechanical legs can go! I hope the d/l speed is better than WT. :-\
Didn't they mention that they wouldn't wipe MWO after Open Beta? Or did I just misunderstand some post on their forum?
I don't understand.
Where are the "Mech Trees" and how do I unlock mechs past the four "Trial" ones listed?
Do you not advance by playing, like other free-to-plays? The Mech Lab interface isn't informative about advancement and I get the impression that we have to purchase mechs for money, up front, in order to advance our Mechwarrior. That wouldn't exactly be free-to-play, though, would it?
EDIT: Oh.. I think I see what's going on. The 'Buy' buttons give the option of either in-game credits OR cash money for buying each one. So we can grind into new, bigger, mechs.
I'm still disappointed about not having all the fancy mechwarrior skill XP and stuff while grinding credits with the so-called "Trial" mechs. So it sucks starting off even more than most free-tops since you're not really levelling until you grind through the credits to afford your first REAL mech. :-\

You are correct, you unlock new mechs by buying them. The in game money seems a little expensive, but IMO doesn't really take that long to grind, as long as you don't get your mech too shot up.
There are skill tree. If you look under the pilot tab, you can unlock new skills on a per mech basis. It should be next to the Mech Lab tab. Most of them are things like quicker turning speed, quicker acceleration, shorting stopping distance, etc. Only thing that really sucks is that its on a per mech basis. So if you have two different versions of a cataphract they do not share the same tree. Even though they are the same basic chassis, they are treated different as far as skills are concerned.
There's an open beta?
How come I only see Closed Beta?
And why did gaming news sites say the game is actually supposed to be released today (or this week).

I saw the skill tree and pilot training stuff, but can't use it until grinding out the 25% C-bill gains on trial mechs to buy a real one. At least the Trial Mech grind doesn't look to be
too long, but it's still grinding to get to the 'meat' of the game.
I'm more understanding now that I see how things work, though. There's not much explanation on how progression works, in the menus, and the levelling is different than other games so it took me a little digging to find out what's going on.
Do you (or anyone else) have recommendations as to whether I should keep grinding the 25% c-bill awards for a medium mech or will I progress faster with even a Light mech compared to the Trial ones? In other words, can the repair bills for Light mechs cripple your income so much that you're regularly making only 25% profit per match?
The client is sunstable at times.
And I can't close the Launcher without forcing it to shut down in Task Manager. :(
I can already see that War Thunder is just more enjoyable, and that comment coming from someone terribly sick of WW2 overdose.
I'm gonna power through the open beta issues in MWO for a bit, to give it a fair shot, but I think it desperately needs the galactic warfare campaign thing to bring it all together (after bug fixing of course). It feels like it's short on features (maps, mechs, the campaign, etc) but that's normal with these new-fangled World Of Tanks clones I suppose.
There's a new update today.
Does anyone know if they finally pushed it into Open Beta, and therefore the last wipe is being done?
I can't get to their site or forums right now, so hoping that's what's going on.
EDIT: Also - I dunno what they had their update do but it ran my hard drive at practically max speed for awhile. Perhaps they did something stupid like name the install files & location "Beta" and had to reinstall them all to a regular one. LOL.
Open beta will start on Monday OCt 29th.

If anyone starts Clan Grogheads...I'd like to join. :) If they continue to roll out mech's I can see myself playing MWO for a long while. I'd really like to see more objective types though.
I don't think MWO even has Clan/Merc Regiment/Whatever social UI in it yet. Hell, it doesn't even have a 'garage' chat function, does it?? :-\
My nick is 'Nefaro', so add me while we're waiting for some future association features.
While Open Beta is now in full swing, and there will be no more wipes last I heard, the game still needs more "stuff" added to it. :)
I'm with Republic. I'd join a Grogz Clan.
Am I just not delving deep enough for my mechwarrior mindset?
I keep trying to play MWO for long periods of time, but end up turning it off after a handful of matches. :-[ Perhaps it's the Trial Mech grind, or the severe lack of map variety, but I've found it difficult to stick with it for long.
I'll just chalk it up to the lack of scenery and some of the terrible PUGs. :P
I had a great match tonight. My team stuck together and I had one great combo. I had a Dragon targeted in the distance while I tried to get a Jenner off a friend. Anyhow as i spun I got a lock for my lrms and launged on the dragon. Right as they were falling i got a large laser solid on the Jenner. They both popped at once you :)
I think if I find a good group I could sink all of what little gaming time I have into it.
That's part of the problem. My PUGs sometimes start off okay with most sticking together while a couple lights go scout. But when the fit hits the shan, my nearby teammates seem to turn tail and run for cover ASAP. ..and with the usual AFK'ing f-heads. They really need to lay off the high repair costs losing players' C-bills. Break even? Sure, that's fine.
But right now my gains depend too much on how willing my teammates are to fight or flee when we make contact, and how well they are at staying together & focus firing. So maybe that's it, along with the lack of maps, the trial mech grind(s), etc. :-[
Well I ponied up for a month of premium to help with the grind. If they can add some additional gameplay, more maps, more mech, etc. I can see myself 'subscribing'. I've always liked the Mechwarrior series and wanted to get into tabletop.
After Mechwarrior 4 from Microsoft I really grew to love the Uziel, and I hope it eventually makes it.
I hope they do some sort of story based content as well. Make up a war between the clans and let the matches count towards an overall goal. The winners get some swag, etc.

That's what the Galactic Warfare thing is supposed to be about - faction warfare for control of planets/territory. It's what WOT always needed, and one of the good things that WW2 Online featured. Having a 'campaign' of sorts.
But from a dev statement, they only just allotted people to begin creating that. So I wouldn't expect to see it for a long time. I'd be a bit concerned about getting burned out on the One-Off Matches by the time it was implemented, and not going back to it by then. :-\

That's disappointing to hear, as it's a big reason why I've remained interested in MWO. Without the Galactic Warfare element to make battles actually *mean* something, the game isn't going to hold much nearly as appeal for me -- some still, yes, but not much.

I've said it over at WG as well, but it seems like many original promises about making a true to canon MW game are being dropped or otherwise on hold more and more.
At this point its just a shooter, which happens to feature Mechs. And arena based matches don't particularly interest me.
I, too, was looking foward to the whole galactic warfare aspect. More in the spirit of the Battletech tabletop wargame.
It currently holds little interest for me, eventhough I am a huge fan of the tabletop game and the BT universe.
I can't really add more, other than to say I agree with your post in its entirety Yskonyn.
(Where do you live, by the way? I can't imagine we're anywhere close enough to ever to do some actual BattleTech tabletop gaming, but I figure it can't hurt to ask. ;) )
I am living in the Netherlands. Smack in the middle of it, so if you aren't living close to the dutch border in Germany or in Belgium I can't see us meeting for a BT game, but it would have been an excellent idea! :D
Unfortunately I've never known any Mechwarrior or Battletech other than the video game. :(
I've tried to get friends into boardgaming, with no success. I always intend to save up and go to Origins...but end up backing out.
I played some Battletech with our D&D group back in the 80's. Always loved the concept and the history. Now, to hear that it will start off without the MW history behind it, I am disappointed. Would love to get on and play if it meant something, but, if there is nothing to be gained from playing except a victory, I will pass.

I, too, was looking foward to the whole galactic warfare aspect. More in the spirit of the Battletech tabletop wargame.
It currently holds little interest for me, eventhough I am a huge fan of the tabletop game and the BT universe.
For the groggier types among us, the turn-based strategy
MechWarrior Tactics will probably be the preferred Battletech fix. http://mwtactics.com/
My biggest concern is that MWTactics is just a browser-based game, giving limited functionality and hi-res fluff. :-[ But it's a WEGO tactical system so it's gonna be a hit, I'm sure.

I am living in the Netherlands. Smack in the middle of it, so if you aren't living close to the dutch border in Germany or in Belgium I can't see us meeting for a BT game, but it would have been an excellent idea! :D
Yeah, I live in Minnesota, so I'm more than a little ways away from you. :P Ah well!
I'm still plugging along. I've got a Centurion C9N-A with a Gauss Rifle and 3 Streak SRMs. Makes for some fun fights. :)
there have been to many copyright problems with BT for it to ever get back to being the original game.

Unfortunately I've never known any Mechwarrior or Battletech other than the video game. :(
I've tried to get friends into boardgaming, with no success. I always intend to save up and go to Origins...but end up backing out.
A couple of guys broke out a Mechwarrior pen & paper game a week ago Friday at my LGS. I knew it wasn't played much, but didn't think it was impossible to find a game. Sorry to hear that.
Have you tried MegaMek? Decent freeware conversion of the Classic Battletech rule system. Includes multiplayer over the internet.
http://megamek.info/downloads
MegaMek is nice. And it is more than a decent 'electronification' of the BT game system.
It only takes a LOT of time to play a session of MegaMek, which is usually what keeps me from using it.
I've revisited MWO this weekend. After messing with MWT, I decided to also get some Mech shooter action in, too.
It's good to see they're adding new mechs and, most importantly, continuing to add control scheme options. The latter has improved my experience this afternoon. For instance, there's an option to have the Throttle 'degrade' so that you must constantly use W & S to keep moving in that direction, instead of having a throttle setting that you must jockey back & forth. Another is being able to lock your arm mounted weapon gunsight to the torso mounted one so that they're aiming at the same point (the + and o sights). I left this off, but you can manually set a hotkey to toggle between the two while in a match.
I hope work on the galactic warfare layer is progressing. That's what this really needs so that you don't feel like a gerbil on the wheel with no purpose other than to grind to the next priciest piece of shiny.

This is pretty much what I'm waiting for as well. Otherwise MWO matches are just going to be shoot-em-ups with no purpose -- not that they can't be fun in their own right, but it's not for me.
MW Tactics looks pretty much like the original hexbased boardgame.
Been keeping my eye on that one as well. I spent many happy hours playing BattleTech, and MWT looks like a decent recreation of that (albeit on the PC).

That's the one I'm anticipating most, but it'll still be on simmer for a bit.
How is MWO evolving? Does anyone here still plays it actively?
Is there any sign of the Galactic War being implemented in the near future yet or is it still going to be DM style gameplay for the foresseable future?
Ack! Double post! Sorry about that. Mods: feel free to delete! :-[

I am concerned about the future of this game. I enjoy playing it, but the game hasn't made any real improvements since I've been playing it the last few months (i.e., still no meta-campaign, no clan warfare, UI2.0 has yet to be released, still only deathmatch skirmish). And now we got this announcement a day or so ago that really concerns me:
QuoteMechWarrior Online Preorders
Infinite Game Publishing has launched Project Phoenix, a preorder program for MechWarrior Online in advance of the official launch of the MMO mech game later this summer. Here's word:Starting today, fans can pre-order up to four different Project Phoenix BattleMech packages with prices ranging from $20 USD up to $80 USD for the top-of-the-line ‘Overlord’ package that includes a whopping 12 `Mechs!

*Dependent on package.
This concerns me because I just don't see how it is possible for this ambitious online game to be ready by late summer/October. As it stands now, MWO is just a rudimentary pvp skirmish system at best. I would expect the far less ambitious Hawken to leave OB by then but not this game that is promising a meta-campaign with a 1:1 time scale based on official MechWarrior lore. Maybe they have been keeping a lot of good stuff under wraps, but I fear we might see a crash and burn on launch situation developing as this game is nowhere near the level it needs to be to actually deliver on the promises the devs have been making (in the past I estimated that Hawken is 65% complete to MWO's 40%).
Furthermore, while I have not spent money on MWO - but I have on Hawken, which should tell you something about the comparative state of the two games - I agree with the comments that this is like a royal screw to the early payers who purchased the "Founder's Package". It's like they are now offering a Founder's Package Part II to get some more money out of their loyal fans. I think they might be facing a revenue crunch, something I suspected from all the "hero mechs" they have been putting on sale despite the fact that the mech content is already outpacing the actual in-game content.
No, I don't see this as a good sign. I hope we don't lose one of the few mech games out there at the moment as I have become a big fan of the genre.
Edit: I found this quote on the official forum and I think it is spot on:
QuoteThese packages will never be made available again because this game is going to sink before they get any sort of opportunity to offer them (or anything else) ever again.
Congratulations, PGI. Instead of shifting the game back into a role-defined team-oriented combat simulator using giant robots, you're giving us shiny new toys. So which one of them can cram the most PPCs, AC20s or LRMs on it? Because thats what this game's victory conditions come down to. Whoever can boat the most high-damage alphas.
This game is Call of Duty with giant robots. I challenge PGI to fix gameplay balance first -- or at least offering some kind of sign that gameplay balance is being addressed in a logical fashion... then maybe I'll lay down my cash for one of these packages.
Until then, this is just a shiny new distraction to keep people from remembering that MWO at this point is all about high-damage alphas and to hell with any sort of team-oriented tactics. 8-mans are horrible because it just consists of which team has the most ERPPC snipers.
Fix the game first, then ask for my money. I promise you I will pay you money if you at least give us an indication you're trying to steer this game back into the right direction it used to be in.
The problem I have with MWO is that even though this game has far more detailed mechs, with far more upgrade options than Hawken, combat always comes down to who deals out the most damage per second. MWO feels more like a destruction derby where the premium mechs dish out stunning amounts of damage on the free2play mechs. The balance definitely feels off to me in this regard. Even worse, though, is the disconnect between performance and result. Win or lose in Hawken, I always have a sense of why the result of the match was what it was. Not so in MWO. When a game ends, I am never clear just why my team won or lost. Maybe this is because I don't grasp all the details related to the various models of mechs, but even so this would indicate a design flaw where the player who isn't a MechWarrior veteran is left clueless. What is more, the game gives poor feedback on personal performance. Hawken is like Call of Duty in that it is always telling you when you earned XP because of something you did. MWO doesn't do that at all. It just dumps a bunch of XP/credits in your lap without explanation at the end of the match. And while Hawken makes it intuitively clear why you should be trying to level up your mech, or why you should be trying to earn as many credits as possible for that special piece of hardware that will buff one of your stats, MWO XP system is lackluster as best (and practically invisible), and the equipment is so nuanced and varied that I am never clear why I should buy one piece of equipment over another. I am always hungry for more money in Hawken, while I often have piles of cash sitting around in MWO. Again, this indicates a serious design flaw (especially seeing how there is far less to buy in Hawken! Sometimes less is more, MWO!).
Lastly, Hawken just looks so much better. In Hawken, you feel like you are in a multi-ton war machine because you can see your mech knocking over street lights, and kicking small vehicles out of the way. What is more, the maps all look different and interesting. The terrain in MWO, on the other hand, in bland, unimaginative, and lacks any sort of destructible terrain that would indicate that you are strapped inside of a massive war machine.
I think MWO has a lot of promise, but right now it remains a confused and under-developed game. So I find myself agreeing with that poster (however, I disagree about the CoD reference - MWO would be a far better game if it WAS more like CoD, something Hawken, ironically, understands). I know the MWO crowd likes to bash Hawken as not being a "real" mech game, but get a clue guys: those devs have developed the better mech game to date.
They've only added some mechs that I see. Which is good, of course, but the game's extended future really hinges on the promised overarching faction warfare layer. I'm not sure if they'll ever see that through, or if they do, whether it'll be anything near what we're hoping.
Tried it and got bored. In not good at this game. There's no sense of satisfaction.
Purchasing the Legendary Founders package is the only purchase I regret from last year. I played a lot at first until it became apparent that only bigger mechs were actually worth using, and that the developers had little or no intention of fixing any balance issues.
Sounds like the developer is about to run out of money if they haven't already.
The bad thing about MWO going down is that it might bring MechWarrior Tactics down with it seeing as they both have the same publisher. Really, I never understood why MWT was going with a F2P model anyway. As a turn-based strategy game, I think they would do far better by just releasing the game as a regular paid product, and then release periodic expansion packs with new maps and mechs for $15-20. Matrix would have been the ideal publisher.
Jagged Alliance Online is turn based F2P

It's a bummer to hear, but not terribly surprising given what I've heard about MWO elsewhere.

I can deal with MWO taking a nose-dive.. even if I've actually purchased a mech on there before.
But MW Tactics taking a fall would be extremely disappointing. I want that one to get finished and get out there.

Don't mention it. Just a gamer trying to help other gamers. :)
Wish I could be more upbeat, though. Eh, who knows, maybe they will turn things around. It took Eve a long time to get off the ground, too.
Quote from: jomniJagged Alliance Online is turn based F2P
Good point! But, to be honest, I don't expect JAO to last two years as a F2P.
I think this F2P methodology is being misused by many gaming publishers. To me, making a shooter F2P, for example, makes sense. Why? Because the two shooter goliaths, Battlefield and Call of Duty, are so ultra-popular that they suck the oxygen right out of the room; the only way to get a new shooter community off the ground is just to give the game away for free. Likewise, games with a solid branding angle, such as STAR TREK Online, LORD OF THE RINGS Online, and DUNGEON & DRAGONS Online, can benefit from F2P since the franchise has such high name recognition that most people hear "Star Trek" and immediately head on over to give it a try and subsequently get hooked. F2P makes sense in both these cases (and, needless to say, where the game is going to go under anyway).
But with those exceptions F2P just doesn't make sense to me, especially when it comes to turn-based strategy games that have a SP mode! Turn-based gaming is now so niche that I just don't ever see a large enough F2P community popping up to support it without the devs nickel and diming the community to death. And even then I am extremely suspicious that the game will make as much money as it could have by being sold as a traditional pay to play game with periodic expansion packs. When I look at Mech Warrior Tactics, I see a great turn-based game that could have been a Slitherine/Matrix best seller. Such a game would have been a natural for the tactically minded SP community. Add in PBEM++ support for MP games, and so much the better. Assuming the game is as good as it looks, I would have gladly paid $30-50 for such a game, and another $20 per expansion pack (assuming we would get a nice amount of new maps and mech per pack). As a F2P game I suspect most people will play completely for free, and those who do pay will probably spend well below the $30-50 price tag I set for it as a P2P title (something that seems to be true for Hawken - hence the recent word that Meteor Entertainment has begun laying people off >:().
I think Notch Persson, the phenom behind MineCraft, sort of validated this conclusion with his new game, Scrolls. If you look at Scolls, you would think this would be a natural F2P game: it's a collectible card game (check), has a strong MP component (check), encourages the trading of cards (check), allows you to spend real money to get more cards (check) and it even has a SP component. But Notch deliberately ruled out F2P and made it a P2P game. I think that says A LOT about the viability of F2P for a turn-based strategy game.
Necro!
MWO seems to be going strong still and it seems like about Fall next year it will be the game I might be very interested in afterall!

Ugh. They're adding a bunch of Clan stuff? I'm not sure how they plan to implement the stuff but there's gotta be an obvious question about balance and making the current stuff obsolete. I wasn't a huge fan of the Clan addition & backstory in the tabletop for a couple reasons and this is looking all too familiar. At least MWO doesn't have much focus on backstory so I don't need to complain about that one. :D
I wonder how they're gonna handle it when they implement faction-based planetary invasion. Why wouldn't everyone just pick Clans to fight for since their equipment is so much better? The devs certainly have some challenges to deal with. I'd be surprised if they actually had the planetary invasion stuff in by October as they're projecting. ???

Well in the game's lore, the Clans generally invaded planets being outnumbered 2-to-1 by the IS defenders. So I'm wondering if Innersphere forces will get "free" mechs/vehicles to augment their strength? I dunno.
Clan mechs ruined Battletech. >:(
back when I was a wee lad a Comtech cache actually ment something! (shakes cane)
We were just starting to get into Lostech when the Clans came around. It was only Comstar that had it and the Clans just f*cked EVERYthing up!
that all happened when FASA was getting sued by a bunch of anime franchises for ripping off their mech designs.
I don't agree that Clan tech Fucked up the game, but you do have to take care. But in the latest edition of the game there are plenty of rules to offset the advantage the Clans have.
I have never found it to be a problem, let alone game breaking.
How MWO will go at it remains to be seen, but from the forums it seems like the devs have proper plans to keep things balanced and fun.

That was my general opinion.
I really liked the succession war type setting as it was somewhat balanced regarding factions and the backstory was interesting. Then came the Clan stuff and I was, "WTF?!".
If they wanted to add new improved shinier 'stuff' to the game system, they could've just continued the Comstar cache discovery line. Instead they added whole new factions that were greatly superior to the old ones which used to be somewhat balanced. It didn't help that the backstory and 'culture' of the Clans sucked IMO, too.
I liked the backstory of the Clans, Kerensky sailing off into the nether reaches of space. Sending the Black Widow to the IS as a merc company. I just didn't get how, even with all of the tech at their disposal when they left, that they were able to set up, manufacture and improve on the designs they left with in the short time they were gone.
Man, I'm having a sudden sense of deja' vu here...
It reminds me of the response I received about 8-10 years ago from a long-time Metallica fan, who asked me which album was my favorite. When I told him the Black album -- which was the first one to come out after I was just old enough to start appreciating rock music (and thus remains a sentimental favorite for me) -- I thought he was going to go apoplectic on me. ???
Not that I don't understand where the rest of you are coming from. I guess it's just since that I started playing MW/BT with the Clans already part of the universe, I simply had no real concept of what it was like before.
Best way I can give you a sense of it is this, take all of your Battletech books pre-Clan, and read them without dwelling on the knowledge of the Clans that you already have. The five Houses fighting amongst one another for the scraps left behind over five Succession Wars. Having to salvage the battlefield for parts rather than survivors. Reduced to raiding one another because the cost, in men, materiel and the almighty Battlemechs, is too valuable to risk in an all out war. The specter of Hanse Davion and Melissa Steiner uniting Davion and Steiner into a virtually unstoppable state. And Comstar lording it over everyone as the only way to communicate over the vast distances each house controlled and biding their time with their Lostech 'Mechs. To what end, noone knows.
Same way with Metallica. After surviving assaults by disco, punk and New Wave, music is a vast wasteland. And then, from across the pond, comes a sound to stir a young mans heart. A call to battle from the sons of Black Sabbath - Iron Maiden. Def Leppard (don't laugh, the first two albums were pretty awesome before they turned into outright cheese). Saxon. Heard and responded to from the left coast of the United Sates. Heard and returned with a sound and fury that left you willing to rush the barricades, tear down the doors and pillage your way through every staid and tired song up until then. I give you, Kill'Em All
I've started playing this a lot more lately.
I do wish, however, that both World of Tanks and Mechwarrior Online would come up with some sort of mechanic to make the games more than just arena deathmatches. Some sort of story or something tying the matches together would be nice.
if you take part in WoT Clan wars you kind of get a campaign to play as you can take territory from other teams on a world map.
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.bit-tech.net%2Fcontent_images%2F2011%2F04%2Fworld-of-tanks-developer-interview%2Fclan_wars_1920-1080-614x250.jpg&hash=d9c723c73c87fe991b73bcb36bcbc6cb2d3565a5)
of course that means you have to join a team, get team speak and play regularly.
I didn't know that. I really need to stop being anti-social and go find a group.
you dont need to pay to play clan wars but you will usually need top tier tanks unless there is some tier restricted event. you also get gold and premium time for participating.
Oh ok, I'm a LOOONG way off for that. I just spent the XP on a T-43 after eons in my T-34 85.
See, this is a problem. With online gaming its either your hardcore, or your in the kiddie pool.
Or you play for the long haul. After 4 years all my German lines are tier 10.
I'm confused as to the progression on MWO. World of Tanks is clear, you follow the research tree and train your crew.
MWO you can buy the 'best' mech's. XP gives you some bonuses...but isn't that it? Am I missing something?

Are you asking whether you are required to unlock a series of mechs before getting into others? I don't think so. If you can afford it, you can buy them along with purchasing equipment to customize them with. This is perfectly fine with me as there is only one barrier to advancement: earnings.
WoT's progression lines may give us motivation for a time, but after reaching Tier 7 in one it just ends up being a damn annoying grind to unlock the next tier. That's the point where I feel like I'm just spinning my wheels and quit for awhile. The feeling of accomplishment you get from advancing through the tiers is nice, up until it starts taking ridiculously high amounts of playing time before you go anywhere.
you can buy your way into top tier and special tanks in WoT. in fact, the idea is to get you to do so. the trick is to know when or where you dont have to.
I've yet to try Mechwarrior, does it have an end game?
One of the biggest issue I found with WOT, was once you got to tier 9/10 the battles were just as bad, if not worst than lower tier battles and all you did is lose credits in every battle, uck! >:(
Mechwarrior is essentially 'tierless'. You can pilot whatever you can afford and use whatever weapons you can afford. XP provides modifiers for your mechs, cools down faster, etc.
The fun of Mechwarrior Online is the same fun I always had with other Mechwarrior computer games. The never ending puzzle of loadouts.

You still need to earn game credits to purchase new mechs and new equipment to put on them, so there is still some kind of progression. Unless you just Wallet-Warrior it.
There are also pilot skills to unlock in each type, using XP that is also gained in matches.
However, you don't have to grind through umpteen previous models to get into specific mechs and equipment. The bigger stuff is generally more expensive but the price is the only prerequisite.
I enjoyed it enough earlier last year that I purchased a 'Premium' mech which gives bonus rewards in each match (bonus Credits IIRC) for when I want to play casually but still earn extra game credits when I use it, as if I had premium (minus the bonus xp in this case). However, I've not played in a few months. Been hoping they get the Meta stuff done eventually.

I can't disagree with your assessment. I still feel the biggest advantage a Mechwarrior/BattleTech game has is the game-world's lore -- something that's been largely (and sadly) neglected in MWO thus far.
It has been so long since I was involved with Battletech...I've forgotten all the lore I thought I knew lol

Certainly I've forgotten much (and probably even a majority) of the lore I once knew, but at the very least I still recall the broad sweeps and most of the major events in that universe. I normally don't care for crap-sack worlds, but something about Battletech/Mechwarrior has always interested me.
I still have all my books. 8)
That makes at least two of us then. :)

As a big fan of the franchise, I am still enjoying Mechwarrior Mercs and the community mods far more.
For some reason or another I've gotten back into this in a BIG way. Been paying for C-bill boost and even paid $15 for a mech...something is wrong with me!

I actually bought a mech awhile back. It has some C-bill bonus on it and I had planned on just playing that one a lot so that I wouldn't feel like I was missing out on the extra C-bill income from premium. So it was more like a mech I could use for short sessions to avoid buying Premium time. I think it's a Heavy.
However, I keep forgetting that I have it and haven't played MWO in awhile. Hopefully the new or upcoming(?) interface improvements have made weapon grouping and selection a bit easier, as that was always a bit fiddly when in the heat of combat. I often needed more preset groups than the few that were available.
UI 2.0 has rolled out, and you can group weapons now in the mech lab. The new interface took a bit to get used to, I found it actually harder at first to fit my mech. All the info is now on a hover popup and (for me at least) sometimes that popup quits popping up.
Buying a mech is a LOT easier (of course) but I wish you could click on the mech and have it load an image and detailed info, rather than the goofy on hover popup.
I didn't realize it but they made PPC's have no damage at very close range...but not ERPPC's...which makes no sense, shouldn't it be the other way around?
I just wish this had bots and some form of single player or offline component. Grrrrrrrr...
I agree. I'd pay for a single player campaign module. I enjoy playing online, but sometimes the "My team sucks" members of the community does tend to grate.
The Min/Max gaming the game...I don't understand. I just want to fit and go have fun trying new tactics.

As always, I strongly second this.
I may give MWO another stretch, starting this weekend, since there is a bonus C-Bill event going and I'm moving away from playing so much WT again.
I've yet to give it a go since all the updates in the last year. Hoping the weapons selection is easier to manage in combat.
I have some low level "founders" or whatever pack I bought back in the day, and thought I might give MWO another go (burnt out on the beta), it being on steam and all. Plus, I had heard some somewhat positive rumblings about the changes in the development team, balance, etc.
So, I load it up on steam and go to sign in. Hmm, can't paste my pw. Googled the subject, and find that people have been complaining about no copy/paste, no pw saving for 3 years now. Impressive dev stubbornness I must say. To such a degree that I'm considering not even giving the game another shot, might just head over to WarThunder and the British line. If they are that stubborn/mentally challenged, it begs the question as to what other issues they either don't see/can't grasp or simply block out with the "talk to the hand" move.
Is MWO worth my time at this point? I do like Mechs and the Battletech lore so +1 on that front.

I've been seeing some buzz lately. Made me update & ponder another visit.
Still concerned that my old Mechs are now outdated after all the new content additions.
The customization should allow me to pop in better parts for my Premium mech, and others, but the new stuff would probably just end up busting my in-game Credits. Same thing happened when
War Thunder first added all the module upgrades junk a few years ago. I had to spend all my in-game money on kitting out my planes with the new content & it completely broke me. :-[

I'm a bit burnt out on World of Warships and I'm trying to decide on some action wargaming. Brit tanks on WT or Mechs... The buzz is what brought me back to MWO after all this time.
If I had the free time I did back in college, I would play both and lets the chips fall where they may, plus, in the downtime, play some WITP AE turns while I ate grilled cheese sandwiches :)
Only the lowest level of Brit tanks are available unless you want to spend Golden Eagles. Rest are still in beta.
Plenty of Brit planes to fly out in RB. ^-^
Ten pages and 120 days later I find this thing...part of a bit of a F2P binge I've been on since getting my spiffy new PC.
Oh my goodness is this fun.
My son and I have been clomping about in trial mechs and even winning a match or two. The drop sequence alone has made me wish this thing worked with the Oculous setup. Don't know how far I'll wander into actually paying for things, but, F2P, it's quite the show.

They're making some additions to MWO.
Reportedly to narrow the weapons & equipment power gap for Inner Sphere mechs. Which should've been done when they added the Clans into this kind of Online Battle Arena, but better late than never.
