I consider myself a serious wargamer - not the frowny faced grog of boardgames and military history type, arguing about the size of buttons on a uniform. But a serious gamer as in, if i look at my games collection, except the odd 4x game (that i play against me buddy Huw, and Bob if hed try!), they are all serious big session games - theres no point playing S2TW for 30 mins, or Pride of Nations - theyre all afternoon off, peace and quiet epics.
So after a week of fending off French people and commuting 2 hours there and 2 hours back (its a 9 mile journey, seriously!) i want to kill baddies in the face. Im driving home at about 4pm GMT and will be back at 2:00am. Now, thanks to SDR and Sim HQ i can do the serious squad gaming stuff over weekends - but thats reliant on a server time and everyone meeting up - what im looking for is a drop in, no mess, no trouble, multiplayer FPS - im not bothered about medals, rankings, KD ratios or an SP campaign - just shoot people and feel better!
My last FPS was BF3 on PS3 but it didnt quite have the same magic as BFBC2 for me - any suggestions welcome - pref PC
Call of Duty definitely has a progression of unlocks, but the multiplay can't be beat.
Defiance isn't bad for shooting people in the face.
Or if you want proper war stuff, Red Orchestra? Mare Nostrum?
Or Mount and Blade: Napoleonic Battles? If you want to musket someone in the face.

I recommend the armas. I'm playing ARMAIII at the moment, but ARMAII is a satisfying game, I think. And it has a penumbra of mod-like things on Steam (Iron Front and DAy Z for example).
I think Geeks wants one where he don't have too think too much as it makes his 'ead 'urt.

I've mostly played the ARMAs (and the original OPflash) in the editor for the last decade, so ARMAIII feels about like the earlier ones in terms
of basic play, though it is so much of major improvement so many areas that I can't go back to the earlier stuff.
I'm still trying to work the editor out on the rare occasions I get to actually fire it up.
I can place some units and go in and battle, but can't seem to set triggers or get units moving yet...but I've not had alot of time on it to be fair to the editor.

The good thing about these FtP online "arena" style shooters is that there are usually so many people playing, you just punch the Battle button and you're in a team multiplayer match in no time. Although it sounds like GRO is still in beta so it may not be so simple.
I find that firing up Rising Storm and flamethrowering some Japs or bayoneting gaijin in the face to be quite therapeutic. Just find an empty server with bots if you want that ducks in a shooting gallery experience.

You put the first waypoint on top of the leader of a formation (the highest ranking and usually in my case, the guy who was me when I was on that side) and then put out more with the speed and mode you want. At least in ARMAIII the AI will just come looking for you if you make a lot of noise.
I usually have some unlikely plan (such as start as a civilian and run over people on an ATV) so some bloody mess starts up pretty fast and I revise it and play it from different angles. I discovered that the AI will shoot you even if you are a civilian but only if you are wearing some of the opposing side's gear. Well that was dull, but easy to explain. And of course after over 10 years using more or less the same editor, I have no idea how I got things to work originally.

Is multiplayer important?
Because flying around as Batman in Arkham City pummeling thugs rarely gets old. Or sandboxing Red Dead Redemption after the game plot is over (or before the plot is over either one, although in BAC the plot does tend to get in the way for a while.)
Not shooters exactly, but still, load up, ride/glide off, hunt decent spawning baddies, thrash your tensions for a few minutes (maybe play some poker, maybe both :D ), quit, no muss no fuss. Landscapes are therapeutic, too.
For that matter, Just Cause 2 has an even larger sandbox with more therapeutic landscaping, and it's a fairly proper 3PS shooter with vehicles. (And Batman's glide/grapple abilities.)
Saboteur (once the game opens up a bit), heavier on the sneaking, but a mind-boggling target rich environment. Dynamiting Nazis, and rampaging around with a tank or grabbing one of their anti-air guns to aggro the occupying army into sending dive bombers, tanks, dirigibles and swass black cars with machine guns in their lights after you?--rarely gets old. Language can be a bit vulgar, but that's true for Red Dead, too.
For drop-in, shoot things for a half hour gameplay I'm a very big fan of Rising Storm. Red Orchestra 2 is also fun, but of the two Rising Storm requires less thinking IMO.

Black Ops 2 is the most recent. Solid CoD game, but I am finding the recent map packs to be a bit bizarre (A skateboard park? A volcanic island? A rock concert??). The original maps are good, though.
Day of defeat is a great drop in and shoot shit team based mp game. I might not be realistic but it's fun easy to play.
i downloaded the Ghost Recon online game - i toyed with BF3 but ive no doubt just as i get into it the great BF4 migration will happen - ive used just as i planned to, dropped in, played 2 games - good times, id forgotten how much fun it was on PS3
