Title: Ultimate General Gettysburg
Post by: Kushan on July 01, 2013, 10:57:38 PM
The guy who started the Total War series mod "Darthmod" is breaking out and doing his own game for PC and tablets. Looks like hes just getting started on it, but hes already got a developer diary up with an outline of the features for the game.

Lots of potential.  Here is to hoping it lives up to it.

Couple of comments:

1.  The pre Alpha promo art looks spectacular.  For a moment, I thought I was looking at table top minis.
2.  From website "Dynamic Progress - Your performance in battles affects future missions. Losing too many soldiers in your first encounter will drastically change the last days of your battle."  I'm a little worried about that statement.  Does this mean that if you do not play a perfect game up until the final battle that there is no way you could ever win?  I seem to recall Panzer General being like that.  You get to a point that if you did not preserve your high experience units properly and at the same time not take any other casualties you will not win the game.

Does look cool. I just wonder about how well it will work if it is designed for tablets and ported to PC

Thanks for the heads-up.
Although, to be honest, I've never been really interested in the ACW.

Artwork looks awesome. He posted a bunch of screenshots that showed their development process and a bunch of rejected art schemes.

I know it sounds cliche, but I'd love to see how a WW2 or Cold War game would play out with the engine.

Sounds excellent...even better, they want to go Ancients at some point.

Trailer released for UGG.  I'm not much into RTS, but I may have to make an exception for this one.

It does indeed look nice.  My problem is that I won't be able to help myself in comparing it to the Scourge of War series.

The trailer only shows the game from a very high up vantage point (which looks good and I like), but is it like Scourge of War where you can zoom down really close and see the action up close and personal?

i think the fairly zoomed in look we saw, with men charging and the cannon balls zipping past is as close as you can get, i think youre looking at 'max zoom' so to speak, and thats fine with me

I really want this too, that's how a battle should look from above imo.

I'm probably in the minority, but the trailer actually dampens my enthusiasm a bit.  Yes, it looks amazing.  But the units look as much like mobs as trained CW regiments.  Movement seems too fast.  And every third unit doing a Braveheart flash mob is just wrong.

Here's hoping that the game looks like the trailer but plays a bit more realistically.

Those were my thoughts after viewing the trailer as well, Queeg.

I guess we don't know what game speed was being showed, maybe some kind of replay mode played at fast speed.  Either way, still interests me:)

Has anyone tried this yet since the official release? It looks quite good! The developer's v 1.01 patch is out, and the fix list is impressive.

I like it a lot.  It has some quirks, but it is so simple to play from a mechanics standpoint that I can't stop playing.  I was VERY down on it before they unlocked all of the battles, but now it is one of my favorite games.  There is a heavy amount of abstraction, but knowing that going in relieves some angst.

It's good. Play's fast, but not click-fest, and can pause and give orders.

It's fun and the AI is challenging.

For me, the lack of meta-campaign limits it life-span, but still good to fire up for my tactical itches.

With over 20 battle for $10, I am not too concerned about life of the game.  When I have sucked all the fun out of it and leave it as an empty husk, I'll move on to another one.

Well all I can say is I only played a campaign once and never came back.  :crazy2:

Yes, there is that too. That said, it has that occasional boot up for CW tactical fix.

Also, there's a semi-meta campaign: the campaign branches depending on your results, much like Panzer General.
