I'm the wrong guy to ask on that one, as Keaton was a completely unknown quantity to meat the time.  (Keep in mind, I was only 12 when the first Batman film was released in theaters.)  I had no idea what he was -- or wasn't -- capable of as an actor, so I had no real expectations, good or bad.

Having since gone back and seen a couple of Keaton's previous films, I'm inclined to say that yes, I could have seen him playing Batman.  However, at this point, it's impossible for me to not be biased in his favor, since we obviously know nowadays that he *could* (and did) pull it off.

All that having been said, I still can't see Affleck in the role.  Nope, I just can't...

Eh, it really isn't weirder than Val Kilmer was.

Besides, I don't like the odds of Zach Snyder managing two movies in a row that aren't complete garbage, so this is liable to suck regardless of casting.

FYI, George Clooney also did a stint as Batman.

I heard the Affleck news this morning.  I got less offended as I thought about it.  Then I remembered Daredevil.

Everyone one knows there will only be one and true batman and that is Adam West.  I think the character of batman itself has become a whore that everyone is trying out to see who plays it the best.

I saw Keaton, Kilmer and Clooney do their turns as Batman as each movie came out.  I haven't seen any of the newer ones.  And I liked Keaton.  AND I had seen Mr. Mom beforehand.

Christian Bale is a pompous ass, but he plays Batman better than all of them, combined. And I'm a big Michael Keaton fan - I think he's a fantastic actor (see My Life and One Good Cop). Batman Begins will blow you away if you haven't seen any of the Bale versions yet.

After Keaton, the whole franchise became a farce. I have issues with the original Keaton movies too, but I ain't gonna get into all that.

The first Batman was decent. The second one started the death spiral to stupid (legions of goddamn penguins with rocket launchers...good grief). The third could best be described as crap. Jim Carrey in full-on obnoxious mode, and Tommy Lee Jones decided to try to out-ham him. It should be burned with fire.

And then there is the fourth. Batman & Robin is in the running for worst movie that I have ever seen. It apparently went through about 7 million re-writes by 3,564 writers. Every single cast member knows that they are in a steaming pile of crap. They have the dead eyes of a stripper as they are forced to speak the wretched, wince-inducing dialogue. And since half the movie budget was bankrolled by toy companies who wanted more crap to sell, we have 79 major characters shoehorned in to this atrocity. Oh, and an underlit purple Batmobile...and armour with nipples. From top to bottom just an execrable piece of crap that is so bad that it isn't even worth watching as a joke.

LOL at Peter Dinklage as Batman. Nice. It's worth noting that the legions of obnoxious fanbois who are having hissy fits over Affleck as Batman are the same ones who were going nuts when it was announced that Heath Ledger would play The Joker. Most would agree that Ledger somehow muddled through the role  ::)

Martok, shouldn't that thread title have been "Holy Fleck Batman" for better topical clarity?  ;D

I for one am perfectly fine with Batfleck, in principle. If he has good material he'll be good, if not he won't, so we just have to hope that he guys who gave us TDKR and MoS will be able to give him good material.

For whatever that's worth. ;)

There's also buzz that he's in strong consideration to direct the Justice League movie. There's precedent for this, since the last time Ben turned down playing Batman (at the time he refused to do anymore superhero movies after Daredevil) WarnerBros was making him an explicit offer to direct JL at the same time. The offer isn't explicit yet, but is still expected.

I'm moderately okay with the theatrical cut of DD, and watched the director's cut for the first time a few days ago after hearing the news. I don't think there will be any problems on Ben's side. (Just dub his voice with Kevin Conroy when he's in the suit.  ;D )

I still disagree.  Affleck has a tendency to play characters who display a fair amount of angst -- something the Dark Knight traditionally does not do (at least not in the way Ben does).  No matter the material he's given, I still see him playing a whingey/emo Batman, which is pretty much the opposite of what fans (even the casual ones) are going to want to see.

I would have no problem with him as the director.  With The Town and now Argo, he's certainly got the chops for it.

I scrolled down to what I thought was the first post, and I thought I recalled it being the first post, but it was actually yours (around the 3rd post): the backhistory scroller during comment composition has a limit and on a long thread doesn't always reach back to the very start.

I don't know about the other times, but that explains mine. :)

Quote from: Martok on September 07, 2013, 10:12:48 AMI still disagree.

I'll give you that point; which may also disturbingly explain why he was chosen (aside from having Daredevil experience but older now): because whatever its strengths, the Nolan Batman films are crawling with whingy emo angst for Bruce Wayne. Man of Steel had a tendency to follow suit (pardon the pun).

Still, I think Ben has the talent to do better if he's given the material (and the direction) for it.

On the other hand, if they're going to have an older more experienced Batman, maybe they should have offered it to Clooney, because while I'm not sure he could bring enough difference in his voice as Batman (so that he doesn't sound like George Clooney and thus obviously like Bruce Wayne) he's aged well enough to bring some grit to the role as well as an Oceanic cleverness (while retaining Ocean's suavity as Wayne). He'd be repaying fans for B&R, too. And I think it's important to realize, though this isn't well known, that despite how it may seem on screen, documentary footage during shooting (and interviews years afterward even when critical of the final product) indicate that pretty much everyone on the Burton series of films (he did stay on as producer) absolutely loved being there and enjoyed working on them, and wanted the final product to succeed. Clooney certainly included.

Same here. There's precedent in a way, too, because the anime intraquel miniseries "Gotham Knight" between BB and TDK originally featured Bale!Bat but was redubbed with Conroy. (Supposedly to please the fans, but probably because the weaknesses of his Batvoice became much more prominent in animation.)

I saw that; I'll only believe it if/when it's confirmed by more authoritative sources.

If true, though, then yes the movie is officially DOA.

For what it's worth we can be reasonably sure that the photo JB tweeted (assuming he's the one who tweeted it) of him holding a BvsS script, is fake. He might still be reading for the part or contacted for it, but the photo itself is not real, based on several pieces of evidence.

MovieBob has an interesting discussion on the whole issue, which I shall append here: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/the-big-picture/8119-Boy-Blunder

Worth noting is that the supposed script attempts to say that the movie is based on Frank Miller's TDKR, which we have been officially told is false (only that part of the tone of the movie is based on one iconic line) -- but if it was true, then JB would be reading for a part which in the original story WAS A FEMALE ROBIN!  ;D

She wasn't quite that... old.  ;)

Although the comic photo you found is canonical, different character. Or was canon, until the New52. Her name was Stephanie if I recall correctly, and she was quite popular with fans. The editors eventually pretended she never existed, and then balefired her completely out of existence with the nu-DC. (Though I see they're officially introducing Carrie somehow because whatever. ::))

Anyway, in Frank Miller's story, she's an early teen not late teen; her name is Carrie.

But in the sequel, still working for Batman a few years later, she becomes Catwomangirl. So there's that.

Kind of looks like the windows weren't fully installed either.  ;)

Still, I'm not unhappy. Is Batman pouty? Yes, but I'd say not more than many other recent iterations. (See poster art for Begins.)

I don't entirely understand yet what they're going for with the costume, but as far as it goes it doesn't look bad. It's cloth armor instead of plates and hard plastic and that's okay with me. I like the Arkham Asylum/City look. (I'm not against plates, but I'm against hard plastic to cheat a body style which makes no instory sense.) I've never understood what the point (pun not intended) of short ears on the Batcowl is supposed to be, but I can't say it isn't an artistic choice with significant history.

On the other hand if the artistic choice is only to evoke Miller, that's lame. The chunky fat bat on the chest, unfortunately, clarifies that as the intention.

Some countervailing facts vs the article:

1.) Mob banks don't only hold mob money.

2.) Actually the movie starts with organized crime struggling to survive after a year under the Bat. They aren't gone yet, but their days are numbered. They don't hire the Joker to kill Batman for giggles. That's practically the Joker's whole point to taunt them with when he first meets them: why are you all meeting here in secret in the daytime? Because Batman. The movie is structured as the point when Gotham crime starts shifting from organized families to colorful theme villains, as "escalation". (This is yet another of many reasons why DKR fails hard; and probably another reason why that movie HAD TO BE annoying.)

3.) The Joker primarily attacks law enforcement authorities who are flagrantly not corrupted in a corrupted system; and makes use of corruption in the system. (Worth noting: Commissioner Loeb was corrupt in comics canon, but seriously noble in the films.) That isn't the action of someone trying to tear down a corrupt system. It more fits his self-description of trying to generate chaos, which those people were standing in the way of.

4.) The author completely ignores the boatload of civilians the Joker tries to tease into becoming murderers at the threat of their own lives. Granted, he's trying to expose their expected pretensions to morality, but that isn't exposing their corruption per se, and a boat of random civilians + a boat of street-level thugs do not equal upper level criminals exploiting society's laws to their own advantage.

5.) The author also completely ignores the hospital full of people the Joker was planning to detonate. Granted, he holds off until they evacuate once they start, but that's evidently so he can push Harvey Dent over the edge -- no point detonating while he and Dent are still inside. We have every reason to believe the Joker would have blown the place afterward if they hadn't gotten the warning early.

Still, an effort at alternative characterization that was worth a shot. :)

(Also 6, I agree the Arkham games Joker performances are overall better, but that's only to say that Mark Hamill's Timm/Diniverse Joker is much better.)

Where he was reprising a role he had mastered for 20+ years. (In two stories featuring a lot of Diniverse vocal talent returning in a reunion, written by Paul Dini -- essentially making it an alternate Diniverse.)

So Hamil had had a lot of practice playing the character, which Heath Ledger didn't have.
