I had thought this would be a few more years in the future, due to the problems of developing such complicated systems. Unfortunately, the chinese hired the Brazilians, who have a carrier, to show them the problems. Seems like this gave them a jump of a few years.

Did you see the link there to Japan's new "Destroyer" flat top? Pretty smart actually moving their whole fleet to flat tops... that is my assumption of what they are doing, I did not read that in the article.

Saw a video about the Chinese aircraft carrier. The article is pretty meh (I don't get it myself, but I guess they think it's funny over there). What's really interesting is the video at the bottom of the page.

There's actually no memes in the video (thankfully); it's a 'regular' Chinese news report on the carrier. I speak no Chinese so I have no idea what he's saying, but the video footage of the carrier and the J-15s taking off/landing is very interesting.
However, I did find it amusing that the J-15s have crash test dummy insignia all over them. ;D

not that the ship is anything to stress over.
besides the 80+ years and a few wars worth of experience there are currently no US carriers without combat time. lots of it. add to that task force groupings, replenishment at sea, damage control etc. shit, we have so many carriers we base them abroad to make life easier. irony that we base it in Japan. 8)
You can tell how proud they are of the damn thing. I wonder if they'd actually even risk it in combat, or leave it close to very heavy land-based air protection, which kind of defeats the purpose of the whole carrier thing. They gotta know we'd blast it to atoms within the first few minutes of a weapons-free love-fest.

Admiral Kuznetzov class heavy cruiser-carrier that the Chinese bought of the Ukranians after the USSR broke up. I was just reading about it in a novel. The Chinese renamed it the
Lianoning and are using it for training purposes right now. Supposed to be ready to ready for active service in another couple of years.
FWIW I dont recall anything Soviet ideas about using them the project power south on Iceland. if anything they seemed like bait to draw US CVs into range of Backfires. in the Med they would have lasted all of 24 hours. in the China Sea... meh.

I seem to recall their doctrine was to use them to protect their SSBNs. I could be wrong.
I don't think the new Chinese carriers are following the same design. I think they just bought the Soviet ship because they could and it'll give them the chance to train up pilots and ship's crew on real world equipment so they'd be ready for their new carriers once they are finished being built. I don't think they'll be using them in the South China Sea. I'd bet they're thinking of using them to project a bit further out than that.

Exactly. I sometimes wonder if the late Tom Clancy (God rest his brilliant soul) did us a bit of a disservice by making us believe in Red Storm Rising and Hunt for Red October that the Russians ever thought they had a chance of closing the Atlantic.

It really does need an editor and a proofreader. The number of grammatical errors and spelling mistakes in the novel is enough to make an English teacher kill himself via paper cuts. The author repeatedly tries to pluralize a noun by adding an apostrophe and an "s" to the end of it. He also repeatedly switches tense from simple past to simple present, sometimes in the same sentence. It really detracts from the narrative but for $1.49 what can one expect?

I always imagined there would be more confrontation involving China one day, but I thought it would be more along the border with Russia or one of the old soviet republics, and somehow involving the US or its allies.I remember a PC game from Red Storm depicting a future 21st century conflict (2015 actually).
It was called Force 21, although I never had a chance to play it.

I'm sure they feel safe he will want to turn it off at the first opportunity to protect his peace legacy. If that is the perception (not the same as reality) they may think it could be 100 yrs before another safe chance crops up.

I wonder if they missed their window of opportunity to grab Taiwan while the US was hip deep in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now, they are making these plays that are getting their neighbors closer and updating their militaries. And the US is starting to focus on the threat that they are presenting in the region.
