I hope this is something more than just Skyrim lite. Liked Dragon Age I but, not DG II.
I never even picked up the sequel to Dragon Age, after hearing it was a more restricted & console-ized version. :-\
I would expect a DA3 to be more like DA2.
Now that EA runs the show, you can expect every single game to appeal to a larger audience in the form of dumbing it down.
Is there even an estimated release date for this one?
It's due in late 2014. I loved the original Dragon Age but never got the sequel for reasons posted above.
FWIW the developers have stated that they have learned from their mistakes in DA2 and are making this one more like the original.
DA 2 was alright. Not nearly as good as Origins and much shorter, but worth playing if you enjoyed the first.

That was my experience too....not as good as the first but still a fun rpg with a decent storyline.

That's what I'm afraid of but, the original Dragon Age was an EA title.

A lot of people thought that DA Origins was a dumbed down RPG. Personally I enjoyed it a great deal, but I didn't come from the background of Baldur's Gate or the other classic RPGs.
Regardless of one's feelings about DA Origins, DA 2 did not come close to matching the epic scope and story of the first. DA 2 was still fun, but it was pretty much a separate game that happened to take place in the DA universe.
Was DA 2 arcadey?
Yeah, it was very much so. I posted my initial impressions when the demo first came out and was ripped as a troll for it by some of the more rabid fan-boys at the old site.
It played very much like a console style 3rd person action fighting game with some light RPG elements and stripped out a lot of the features from the original which itself wasn't exactly the deepest RPG out there. The bean counters at EA didn't help matters much by forcing the dev team to recycle maps so you'd end up "exploring" the 5-6 of the exact same dungeon maps 5-6 times during your playthrough.
Gus, buy DA2 for PC on the cheap and play it. It doesn't suck as bad as it's made out to. Did you play DA Origins? Did you like it? If you answered yes to those questions, DA2 is worth the time.
I enjoyed DA2 as well. Considering how cheap you can get it now its worth a shot.
Yeah believe it or not I finished DA Origins. Curious about DA2 now...damn you all.

Got to the very end boss battles in both DA: Origins and DA2 and couldn't for the life of me figure out how to beat it, got repeatedly slaughtered in both games at the end and never finished either. Enjoyed both very much.
Old thread but don't think anything more recent...
With the release on November 18th, I saw some places state that reviews will be released starting November 11th....the developer must be pretty confident in the game to allow that.
Still undecided if I will buy, but since reviews can come out soon I can make the decision later this week.
^Where'd you see that? Ironically I was just watching some videos to get in the mood. I pre-ordered.
Here...

Cool, they must be confident like you said. I think that bodes well for us.
So when is pre-load gonna be up for this?
(Mind you, for us non-Americans release date is the 21st and not the 18th :( )
Midnight on the day of release? 21st for you?
^There's supposed to be a pre-load option.
It's advertised on Origin.
I'm watching y'all's commentary. DA1 was awesome but DA2 not so much.
I didn't even buy DA2.
I was very disappointed. Somehow I thought it was an extension of DA1. Loved the characters in DA1. DA2, they're meh. I dunno, it's been a while, I need to revisit it.
Isn't DA2 more of an ARPG also?
Yeah, but the whole thing just seemed...off.

Yeah, but the whole thing just seemed...off.
I played DA1 so much I racked up like 500 hours, almost as much as I have in Skyrim. I played DA2 through once. Same deal, I just couldn't get into the characters and the combat seemed very off. It certainly never managed to inspire the sense of desperation that my first playthrough of DA1 did.
I think they got the message though. This is looking pretty good from what I've seen so far.
^You guys and 1 million other screaming DA fans can't be wrong. And I agree, from the videos and wikis I've checked I am getting a good, loin-moistening vibe.
DA1 was excellent. I suspect I'm in the minority but I thought DA2 was pretty good too. Not as good as 1 but good none the less. It was different than1 but in some ways better. Your character's story spanned many years of time as she/he grew in not only levels but in wealth and fame. I liked it.
Admittedly I didn't finish DA2. It just didn't engage me. I remember I didn't finish DA1 at the time either, went back to it and finished it, and that's probably the spark that got me off of DA2.

A review of an AAA title from the biggest companies made by the big-sites,
These are pretty much guaranteed to be near-perfect scores (at the very least). These guys get paid for it.
I'm reserving my judgement of the game until I play it (or at least read your opinions)
EDIT: According to Origin pre-load is up :)
I might actually start it later today.

I have never really bought into every review site is doing a major publisher/developer a favor by giving them great scores....but at the same time, nor do I completely think that my own opinions will 100% match the reviewers. I just consider it another source of information (much more interested in the verbiage, not the scores) and combine this with some of the preview videos, I think it has a chance to be above average....good enough for me nowadays:)
A link to the Bioware forums where a ton more reviews shown...too many to link here:)

Just curious, did you buy standard or deluxe version? Trying to see if deluxe is worth it or not.
^Deluxe.

Thanks...currently torn between the two.....do they usually make the deluxe content available for purchase after release? It would be a $20 difference for me to buy the standard versus deluxe version.
I'm not sure, though my guess would be no.
There's also some supposedly pre-order-exclusive stuff you get.

Ok, thank you....I'll have to think about it...just not sure worth the extra $20.....but don't want to regret not picking it up either:)
Well, I couldn't resist....I have joined the club in pre-ordering....too many positive comments floating around to pass up. I believe tomorrow we'll start seeing more impressions because the Xbox One users should be able to start playing using EA's early access program, if they bought it.
Looking at Metacrtic this morning I saw that it had an 89% overall rating.
Oh Lord how I want to get this, but my laptop is at the bare minimum to run it and I don't want to settle for the 360 version.
Do it.
About 40 minutes of Angry Joe liveplay impressions:
Meh..
After watching the Angry Joe vid, I realized this is a 3rd-Person Action game rather than a tactical RPG like the original Dragon Age.
>:(
Divinity Original Sin has pretty much topped my RPG game experience, along with Wasteland 2 now I'm all done in with RPG's.
Well, it's combining the styles of the first two games, or trying to.
I'm still excited. And I just can't hide it. I'm about to lose control. And I think I like it.
As long as you're not just burnin', doin' the Neutron Dance.
Too late.
At least you don't have to jump for my love, Gus.
Back on topic: how annoying is it that Dragon Age 2 isn't available on Steam, only through Origin?
I had picked up DA1ultimate on a deep discount sale a while back (though I haven't played it yet, for completely irrational personal reasons -- made more irrational by my buying it anyway even on sale ::) :P ) and thought this would be a good time to at least put DA2 on my wishlist for sale alerts.
Then my surprise.
Inquisition isn't available dgiitally except for Origins as well.
I noticed that as well; it's rather odd. I'd imagine Steam will have it before long as they seem to have some Origin DRM requirements for some titles. Case in point, I almost pulled the trigger on Far Cry 3 last night as it's only seven bucks, but decided not to when I saw it required Origin DRM. I have Origin installed on my PC, but I'd much rather just deal with one system and not multiple ones.
I have DA Origins Ultimate on Steam, so surely they'll get it sooner or later, right?
I installed Origins just for the Inquisition. I hope I don't pay dearly for that move.
I might have to consider PS3ing this game series after all. >:(
Instead of on the PC? Inconceivable. Unless you are that afraid of Origins DRM, which may be...conceivable.
PC is the way to go. If for no other reason, then for the mods that will become available.
That said, I'll likely have to get it for 360 because my poor old laptop will not run it. At least not very well.
You are a gaming mystery wrapped in an enigma.
I'm figuring I'll break down and get now for the 360 and by the time I have a rig to run it properly I'll be able to buy the PC version for 5 bucks.
Always thinking, you.
TPEK: just got my Origins code for Inquisition. I can't click on the instructions to tell you if I can pre-load or not because I am imprisoned at work.
Check your email for a code.
^Apparently only Americans can pre-load today anyway.
Us "inferior-folk" have to wait until the 17th (for pre-load, to play the game we need to wait until the 21st).
That stinks.....mine is preloading as I type...roughly 25gb.
Sorry tpek.
Well, all downloaded and installed....desktop icon just taunting me that I can't play it until next Tuesday:(
^Me too...preloaded overnight. Hopefully it will actually work Tuesday when I get to it.
Didn't get a lot of time to play yet, but the graphics are pretty impressive....I know I will also be in the minority, but so far I actually like using a gamepad for controlling the action, seems to work for me, but I am early on so who knows whether that will change after I log more hours. I continue to read fairly positive remarks on the game, so I look forward to getting much deeper.
Just played for two hours, got sidetracked by a pride demon. Tried to defeat him three times, got pummeled each time. A lot of reviewers on Metacritic are commenting on using a gamepad instead of a mouse and keyboard on PC. Last I checked the game had an 87% rating. Graphics are very good, runs smooth on my 3 year old rig. I have to re-learn party combat to defeat this pride demon bastard. Then the game will open up.
I've got about an hour in and I think I'm leaning towards trying with a game pad as well. I think with a mouse and keyboard, it is pretty difficult to control the camera, your charachter and your party members all at the same time in the thick of battle. I feel like the dual thumb sticks will be a great aid in this. I'll give it a shot next time I play.
So far game pad works pretty well for me and I likely will stick with it. Haven't got into any large battles yet, but seems like it should be fine, seems pretty smoothe for me. And I'll say again, really have been impressed with the graphics so far, just seem real sharp. Still have to play a lot more to comment on actual gameplay and story, but seems to be trending well.
Either of you get to the pride demon boss battle yet? I am sure I will be thinking about is all day until I go back to it tonight.
Going back to an earlier topic for a moment: I noticed while looking into the PS3 versions of the series that an Origin registration was still necessary. I wonder if that means I can import "keeps" into new games across platforms?
It seems to imply that I wouldn't be able to play a "used" game at any rate (thus couldn't lend it out to the guys at work either).
Weirdly, a huge number of "new" DA:OUA PS3 games being sold on Amazon by independents, come from Japan. I've heard there are localization problems from doing that.
Game is supposed to be released for us Worlders any minute now! :)
Mentally preparing to take on that demon in a little bit...and then jump into the world.
Just beat the pride demon, finally. Took ~10 tries! That was a long prologue. Happy and relieved to have cracked this game open.

What level are you playing at? I beat it on the first try without too much effort. I'm playing on the medium difficulty level.
Also playing on medium. Once I realized that the rift could be targeted if I just got close enough, it got much easier. I thought there were only certain windows where the rift was vulnerable.
Also - is there a toggle for walking/running?
Anyone playing? I'm about 12 hours in, Level 5 Rogue. The UI is clumsy but I am still playing with a mouse and keyboard. The lore is fantastic. Finally have put together a really effective party as well...Two warriors, my rogue and a high powered mage. Just started to kick ass a few minutes ago and I feel I am on the verge of the game really opening up nicely.
Some features are great, like the war room. I love the functionality of the map too, and how players unlock areas as they explore them. It feels natural. Combat could be streamlined but it's enjoyable.
This isn't Skyrim but I don't think it's really supposed to be. But it could become my favorite RPG since Skyrim. I actually think the lore is better here.
Started playing it a couple of days ago, probably have 3-4 hours into it. Level 4 warrior.
My perception of the game is right along with yours. Combat is clumsier than I'd like, but I'm getting the hang of it and it is enjoyable. I'm hoping for some improvement in the tactical view in a future patch. I completely agree on the War Room and the map. I really, really like the functionality of the map. That's nicely done.
The lore of this setting has always been the strong point. It took me a bit to realize I was in the mountain village of Haven and outside the Temple of Sacred Ashes from DA:O. When that clicked the game was suddenly a lot more alive for me. Finding the villages and ruins and clear artifacts of a long history is one of the things I always want out of an RPG. This one gives that feeling even more so than Skyrim does.
If I had a nit to pick, it's that I'm having a little trouble suspending disbelief at the "walk 100 yards, find 3 mages and 3 Templars fighting, kill them, repeat" bit. I want to go round up a bunch of one side or the other and teach them some basic tactics. I'm not sure why the prevailing idea of a civil war in fantasy RPGs these days seems to be small bands fighting literally everywhere. At least in DA:I the fighting seems to have caused some physical impact on the populace and the infrastructure, unlike in Skyrim.
I'm enjoying it, and more than I did DA2. It isn't up there like DA:O was for me yet, but I understand it gets much better as things progress.
I've barely got time to play it.
Though I've managed to sneak in about ~30 hours since its release.
How does this compare to Divinity Original Sin? Or are they so different as to be uncomparable?
^30 hours is 'barely'??
I can't compare it to DA:O yet as I've only put in about a dozen hours, but I also read that it really opens up after the first dozen or so hours. And my last session really 'clicked' so I get the feeling I am on the cusp of something cool.
Haven't played Divinity so I can't answer you Rayfer.
The game was released a week ago or so and I haven't played much but it, so yeah...
~30 hours isn't a lot.
^For you. I've got twelve in and feel like I got away with something.
Santa got me the game. I have been having fits getting it up and running. The next time someone complains to me about Battlefront's DRM I'm going to point them to this.
I got the PC version, physical disc. When I insert the disc I was prompted to install Origins and create an account on that (it looks similar to Steam). And that was all it would do. I couldn't find any way to install it from the discs. Finally I noticed that through Origins I was able to download it. That download finally finished last night. When I launch the game it takes a very long time logging into Origins......I'm not sure why it has to do that.... By the time it has logged on and opened I've run out of the little time that I had to tinker. Wife and kids are out of town for a few days so hopefully I can take it for a spin tonight and tomorrow. But a day and a half to even get the thing installed was a bummer. Does anyone know if it will run if I disable the internet when I launch the game?
I don't know for certain if there is an offline option for Origin but I would be very surprised if there wasn't.
Ive been able to play without Origin running.
^There you go. Is there a offline mode or similar?
I just tried a game disconnected from my network and it was fine. It looks like the game works like Mass Effect 2 - if you're logged in it does some online saves, and apparently pulls down information from your DA:0 and DA2 campaigns.
I can open it with the Internet turned off.
I think I have bigger problems now. I don't think my system can run the game. It takes forever to load and then after choosing what I want to be it hangs for a long time and then crashes to desktop. I just checked the minimum specs (something I should have done before asking Santa for the game) and is seems my processor isn't up to speed (pun intended).
Anyone want to buy a very slightly used game?
Well, that's the thing: you already registered it on Origin. I expect that means you shot the wad. Maybe there's an option for an uninstall / deregister so you can install it on a new computer (and thus sell or give it to someone else)?
Origin is like Steam. Any game you own on Origin you can install the client on a computer and download to the new computer.
Unless it also deregisters, you'd still have to sign in with the account on which the game was originally installed. (Presumably Steam works the same way: I could put anything I have on the Bro's computer, but only if I sign in as myself.)
I think that I'm gonna try it on my sons laptop when the wife and kids return from doing xmas at my in-laws.
^The game is really resource-intensive and demanding.
Not sure a laptop can run it without setting itself on fire.
I'm playing on my gaming laptop. Granted, it's a purpose-designed gaming laptop. Your garden variety salaryman special will probably chug a good bit with it.
^ I was just thinking a Falcon could handle it, assuming someone was willing to drop around 5K or more on a laptop.
(Which I did, ten or more years ago, but that was for a desktop replacement unit. Great equipment, still runs XPSP2 today like a champ. Falcon has a hilarious photo of it on their promotion page where they're showing how hard it was for them to get a photo of it due to it SUCKING ALL LIGHT INTO ITSELF! :2funny: One of their TLX's could still run it, but again would need major upgrades to be sure.)
I'm running an MSI Dragon series that's about a year old now, and it too is a desktop replacement. Darn thing weighs about as much as a desktop, too. It'll handle stuff like DA:I just fine, though.
33% off on Origin right now, BTW. I'm tempted... but I still haven't actually played the original game yet. Perhaps that will be next...
^The original is great and the new one is great as well. DO IT

Oh, I already own it. I've just never played it. Passing on Inquisition for now. ;D
Any of y'all currently playing DA:I, PM me, please. Thanks!
I've yet to finish the game.
It kinda grows stale, boring and repetitive after a while.
I finished it twice. Have you killed any dragons? I don't find them boring and repetitive.
I'm not playing currently, but I'm sure I'll be back. This is the perfect game to tune up when I want to scratch the CRPG itch a little bit in a large, beautiful, well-realized world. I don't see how anybody could possibly prefer the humdrum Skyrim world to this. I love the keeps and camps system and gradually taking control of a new area.
Varric, Sera, Darian and Iron Bull are my favorite characters. Since two of them are rogues, I have played it through with a 2-handed fighter and a mage, and I have started a 3rd playthrough with a sword-and-board fighter.
Some of the interface stuff is tiresome, like having to change from weapons to armor to misc. just to look at all your inventory and having to stand right on top of crap to pick it up. And I just wish the upper-level armor was a little bit gaudier. These folks should take a gander at the top-end stuff in Diablo III. But then again, loot has never been Bioware's strong point.
It's pretty much like Skyrim in many ways.
Constant repetitions of same environments, enemies respawning (except in this game they respawn right on top of you or in front of you like in an MMO).
Dragon hunting is fun at first and boring at the end (the game's also bugged and I didn't get the achievement for slaying the 10 high dragons).
It would have been much better had they dropped the Skyrim/MMORPG-like stuff and stuck with what made previous Bioware games awesome.
There's a lot of things that make it unique, fun, and memorable...including the war table, crafting and the lore, amongst other things.
Gus - send me a few screenshots, stat!
Got two sick kids and a pissed off wife...may not happen tonight.

Has anyone purchased and of the 3 DLCs? If so, were they worth? Also, I can't tell if they need to be purchased in order or if you can get as much out of it by buying them in any order, anyone know?
I bought the Descent, but I need a certain amount of power points to access it...16. I'm at 14 now.
Played 15-20 hours in the last 3 weeks. Rivals Skyrim for my favorite recent RPG. Awesome lore, runs like a dream, great graphics. Just a fantastic game all around.
Another DLC was released a week or two ago also.

I wouldn't even be able to take a guess. My gaming time is pretty limited. I finally got the game to run when I purchased a new laptop about 5 months ago. I had spurts where I would play an hour or 2 for 2 or 3 days in a row and then not touch it for a month. There were a few quests that I didn't complete because I had gotten my character up to Level 27 (I think) and completing them felt more like a chore than fun. But I
really dug the game. Like, a lot.
Damn...after 35 hours my rogue is at level 11 :/
I love the game too though. Rivals Skyrim, IMHO. In some ways its even better.

I started with the DLC that they released first last night. Not bad. I'm paying more attention to the story line, so that I can get the most out of it. After closing rifts like a boss for a very long time it was nice to face some that kicked my butt again. You definitely don't need to bother with these until after you're a pretty high level.
I never really got into Skyrim but I only played it on the laptop that I retired a few months ago and it struggled. Maybe with my new rig I'll have an easier time getting into it.
If you like Dragon Age I can't see you not liking Skyrim. It's been four years since release though - Bethesda should be letting some info out soon on the next Elder Scrolls game.
