First look at Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon!

Games Workshop Games Day event just started. First looks at Warhammer 40k Armageddon!

Well - frankly - from what I can see in that screenshot - it may well be the most disappointing thing I have seen all year.

Please tell me all the hype wasnt about some clone of Commander ?

We clearly stated that we would use the PzC engine that has been in development for 5 years or more as a base, as it is a hexbased turnbased strategy wargame, you don`t throw away such a stable and versatile engine.

In the first place it is game based on the deep, rich and wonderful WH 40K lore, that on itself makes it such a cool project to work on.

But under the hood we have many new features and updates, bigger maps, more zoom levels, a story and character driven campaign, more tiles, more tiled layers, more and multi-unit animations and SFX, units are now posed and move in six directions, better and more detailed graphics, multiple sound tracks, new combat rules, improved AI, cross-platform development, better memory footprints, next gen of server-based PBEM etc... it is a big evolution. It is in all ways a new game. Sure there are similarities, but it is a huge project and fun game.

Good, after this how about  a remake of Star General! Maybe something like Star General meets Empire of the Fading Suns (Matrix owns the title).

Let's see how things go with this title. Lots of games are based upon recycled engines and they manage to provide a unique level of gameplay.

A turn-based WH40K game is still interesting.

Agreed, tb WH40K is a definite market, and that is what we were told we were going to get, based on a (modified) engine we're all familiar with (itself an update to a classic gaming engine revered and beloved by practically everyone who has ever played it) -- and that is exactly what this ONE PHOTO OF A SCREENSHOT is showing us. ;)

No disappointment here yet, carry on.  :D

Games Workshop, the folks who practically stamped out independent gaming shops back in the late eighties with there tactics. So many good shops went down because of them, and what are we left with now? Space marines and WH40K, way to go  >:(

In fairness to those of us who must be named skeptical, this screenshot was offered for promotional purposes.

I'm much less interested in what this game looks like than the design decisions: what do the units represent, is there a QB mode, which armies will be available at release, &c.

I adore the 40k universe as conceived but loathe its last few iterations...exploitive, kit-laden, and little regard for actual game design.

As I've said, given the company and the IP, I'm in, but I'd have liked them to be a bit more adventurous.  With their money, of course ;).

Best,

Rites of War wasn't popular, but I liked it quite a bit, so if this can be compared to Panzer Corps (PzC can be a confusing abbreviation on a wargaming forum as it only referred to Panzer Campaigns in the past) like RoW could be compared to Panzer (or rather: Fantasy) General, it could be enjoyable.

One thing a Warhammer game doesn't need is cheap units appearing next to objectives, so I'm hoping that aspect is left out.

Well - perhaps my comment was misunderstood. Its not your engine I have a problem with - I perhaps missed that previous  bit of info. It was more the fact I was expecting a tactical game - with a new engine. Something like the recent space hulk - only much better. I am dissapointed the IP has been acquired only service another game in a line already done. Sorry - whilst the commander engine is ok for what it does - its still just units with points, and different pictures - I dont see how its going to change that much its not.

Again - I am not critisising your game - just voicing my disappointment its not something new.

will the game have a quick battle option - or is just a set campaign and then multiplayer?

re old games, rather than companies just redoing old games that were good, i wish they would the old games that were ambitious but failed at the time, like Wargamer 1813, or 1944 Across the Rhine or Fields of Glory (not Field of Glory) etc but i guess that is off the topic.

i suppose what would make it unique would be for the unique aspects of the units to be able make for different tactics/strategies than usual panzer general fare

No!

If it is a remake of another remake it is not interesting. Doesn't mean it is bad. Enjoy kids, who did not play the originals. But for my own sake i do not want to replay rites of war or PCG in any incarnation.

^You don't have to buy it. And as one of the (39 year old) kids who didn't buy the original, I may actually enjoy it. Who knows? I won't know until I try it.

Truth. And that's the vexing part. The Pcg system is nice and all that. But if you played 4+ Pcg style games + rites of war there really isn't much to look forward to. Just modding the game with some
40k gfx doesn't all of a sudden make it interesting.
But if you look forward to it and enjoy it more Power to you, i envy you. For my own sake i just feel dissapointment due to the lack of vision of the devs. Assuming it turns out to be a Pcg clone.

No, that's why haven't commented upon this game since the initial announcement on the Matrix forums. I held high hopes at the start, but no more. I'm not saying it will be a bad game. I just don't think it it will be ground breaking, or even interesting for someone who played the old ones.

I'd be quite happy with a new iteration of Chaos Gate.

It's probably not too much to ask considering the other X-Com style tactical turn-based combat games are fairly popular right now.

^^ TRUTH!

It occurred to me the other day, though, that we may never get an actual translation of Warhammer tactical rules (40K or otherwise) to the computer, precisely because if that ever happened Games Workshop would be competing against itself. We'll get all kinds of other approximations of the system in different real-time and turn-based applications, but not the inspiration for those approximations.

The recent Space Hulk PC conversion doesn't necessarily contradict this principle, if GW treats it as a gateway to get people to buy and play the (very expensive) boardgame, instead of a way for people to effectively play the boardgame on computer. In other words, so long as all we get is the first campaign, and maybe a followup campaign DLC (or maybe not), and no way for people to 'build' their own campaigns or missions, the new SH game is really just an advertisement for the boardgame where GW may recoup their advertising costs directly through purchases of their advertising medium.

I do have to admit that the Blood Bowl PC game seems (by its latest iteration anyway) to be a total conversion, so that would be an exception to the principle.

Post by: Cyrano on October 03, 2013, 10:53:59 AM
GW has largely been walking away from its one-offs and lesser children.

I'd be curious to know what the numbers of Space Hulk (box) were, but, given the high number of remainders available, I doubt Dreadfleet did very well at all, and we all know what happened to Warhammer Historicals.

Its core business is Warhammer and Warhammer 40K.  It is there that it wrings, twists, squeezes, and extorts.  It is there that it must not compete with itself which is why the near-certain cash cow that a digital 40K would be has never appeared.  This is no secret -- its reps have said as much.

That said, BB -- Chaos Edition is a REALLY good game and Space Hulk is a nice implementation of the rule set.  I guess this is why the early looks at the Armageddon are not being greeted by enthusiasms...there's much more there that could be done, but GW has no interest in letting it happen.

FWIW, my fantasy game remains a full-blooded redo of Final Liberation:  All armies, 3D terrain, and the Living Rules.  Most everything past 2ed 40K is pretty much rubbish in my eyes.

Best,

Jim
