I just got a news flash on my phone that Tom Clancy has died.
Looking for info now.
Confirmed. Damn.

One of my favorite authors! RIP!

Red Storm Rising is one of my all time favorites (I realize Larry Bond co-authored with TC). Clancy was by far the best when it came to techno-thrillers.
Tom Clancy, author of 'Hunt for Red October' and 'Patriot Games,' dead at 66

This sucks. Red Storm Rising is one of my all-time favorites. And 66 is fairly young these days...damn.
That sucks, too young. RIP.
Wow that sucks. RIP Tom.
Tom Clancy dead at 66.

I did not particularly care for the rapid fire pulp novels released under his name, but not written by him, but his classic books from the 80s and 90s definitely left an impression. Sad news.
OK guys - I've now merged FOUR threads into this one. Look before you leap!
how sad, i loved his early work, RIP

Bite me.

I think it's safe to say we all know he's dead.
was it Bison from 'ye olde' place that spammed almost every forum with 'not a wargame'?
a comment like that - i feel a tom spam coming on
We know he was a harpoon player, perhaps he watched hermanns review. ;)

"Bite me" is, in fact, legalese. It is a Latin term from the English common law. Roughly translated, it means, "Shut up or you may get punched in your vulva."

That's terrible news. Tom Clancy was only 66. R.I.P. Tom.

Dang it...I hated reading about this. Red Storm Rising is one of my favorites... I actually haven't ready many of his other books...always been on my 'todo' list.

100% agree. Very sad news.
I just heard the news over the radio during my lunch break. Sad news. Don't forget about the Rainbow 6 series as well as Ghost Recon. He'll be missed for sure and 66 is too young to go. :(
I still have my hardcover copy of the Naval Institute Press edition of Hunt for Red October. Must have first read it when I was 14 I think. It just blew me away and led me into being both a military history fan and a wargamer. Not only did I read the books, I used to listen to the audio book versions on cassette when the lights were out.
I stopped reading his books after Debt of Honor but what memories I have of those first 4-5 books!
RIP
A long time ago I quit a job where the guy brought in to replace me was the son of a Russian Ambassador. While I was training him, small talk during breaks brought up the book Hunt for Red October. He said the book was amazing for covering a sub that was supposedly completely secret. His father had taken him to see the real Akyna (typhoon) as a boy. The wide design, many other things were in the book that were supposed secrets, were mentioned. He wondered where the guy got his info.
the Frisbee's chapter in RSR got his ass yanked into a CIA/DIA debriefing room.
Aw shit. RIP Sir.
"Tom Clancy changed readers' expectations of what a thriller could do," he said. "He will be greatly missed by millions of fans in the UK and around the world."

RIP Tom. He's the one who got me into reading techno thrillers and no one else wrote them as well. Hunt for Red October and RSR are still two of my favorite reads of all time.
actually Mirth that wasnt what he was thinking of at the time.

With apologies to Mr Clancy, I prefer the other one ;)
Tom Clancy and WEB Griffin are two of my favorites, sad to see Clancy go so early.

NM...saw a thread in General Discussion - thought this belonged in "Current Events"!
Good. I was hoping we'd have at least five different threads created on the topic.
I believe that's a record.
And I ninja'd all of them.
I read several of his books and loved them...Red Storm Rising, Cardinal of the Kremlin, The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games...
R.I.P Tom.
Jarhead - I'd be interested to know what books he didn't write but were under his name. I hate when publishers do that.
*EDIT*
Actually nm JH - I'll do some research.

All the tech force? None of which I read.
I heard this earlier today. A great writer taken too early. RIP :(
I'm sorry to hear of his passing. I read most of his earlier books with the exception of 'Cardinal of the Kremlin' but nothing since 'Bear and the Dragon'.
Hey guys, did you hear Tom Clancy passed....oh never mind.
Apparently I'm the last to hear the news. RIP Tom. He was one of my favorite authors. Just started listening to RSR on Audible (again) at work yesterday.
we're actually up to 7
some very interesting Clancy - Bond backstory involving Harpoon.
http://paxsims.wordpress.com/2013/10/02/tom-clancy-gamemaster/
Matt would know, too, as he's close to Bond and Carlson.
without Harpoon and Bond there would be no RSR or HfRO. simple as that.

I'm pretty sure the ones with only his name as a sub-title were the series books. Net Force, Op Center, stuff like that.
If your avatar isn't a reference to a Clancy book, you weren't a real fan. 8)
some dont need to be conformist to cite chapter and verse yee whos never had a surfing avatar.
He was a great author and could make sense of the complex modern weapon systems and how they're used. But he lent his name to some of the best early computer games also including a contender for best sub sim of all time, "Red Storm Rising" named after his book. A real gem on my old Amiga. Was that 1988 or 89? Anybody got backstory on that game and how much Tom had to do with it?
There's peeps around here that know more detail, but Clancy worked with Larry Bond to write the naval warfare aspects of Red Storm Rising; those chapters in the book are basically AARs of their battles.
The Red Storm Rising game was indeed a lot of fun. I tried it on the store PC when I worked at Babbage's back in '88-'90 or so and enjoyed it, even though I'm not a big fan of sub sims. Ironic, since a sub sim (Silent Service) got me fired from that job, actually. Stupid submarine NES cartridges.

go up to post #48 in this thread and read the link :)
The only thing about Clancy that annoyed me was his denial of the Vampire games, using Harpoon, to playtest the carrier group off of North Cape in Red Storm Rising.
Everyone knew it happened, there were at least fifteen local DC area gamers involved, but he acted like it was only a fairy tale.
A few posts back are links to where Larry Bond confirmed it.
Sad news indeed. I'm a big fan of Red Storm Rising and (most of) his Jack Ryan & John Clark novels. He'll be missed.

I don't ever recall him denying it. I recall something much more like what Matt wrote about (see link in #48) where he wasn't advertising it, but not really hiding the fact that they gamed out the scenarios first.
There's an un-named guy to whom the original printing of the book is dedicated on one of the first few pages. That guy is actually a regular attendee at the NDU/CASL roundtables and an occasional presenter.

Nice article. Thanks for the link brant.
Good article brant. Thanks!
In re the Vampire games, he repeatedly said he had no memory of such a game. There were about fifteen local gamers from the DC area who participated. Running into a few later at a book signing, he flatly denied any such memory. It's been years, but believe I can find Sam and Paul to back this up.
^^ cool. You've got closer-to-first-hand-knowledge than I do...

MiG Pilot is a damn good read. I'm kind of surprised it was never made into a movie.
