This looks really good. It's being developed by Damon Slye, a founder at Dynamix who worked on the original. The list of features is incredible (from the Kickstarter page):
- Dogfighting: Aerial combat at its best. Take to the skies in fighter aircraft like the Sopwith Camel and Fokker Triplane.
- Persistent Multiplayer Game World: Jump in anytime for a challenging mission with or against your friends. There will be both historical and MOBA-style maps.
- Single Player: Enlist for the full tour in campaign play with more than 30 missions played back to back from 1915 to 1918. Single player will be offline and DRM-free.
- Easy to Learn: Red Baron will have a simple learning curve, allowing you to jump into the cockpit and fly within minutes to feel the rush of aerial combat.
- Constant Progression: Advance your pilot to gain new and better aircraft, customize with new paint and decals, and earn upgrades.
- Buy Once, Play Forever: We are not using a free-to-play model. Pay or pledge once, have Red Baron forever.
- No Subscriptions
- No Pay to Win
I've never helped in funding a Kickstarter project, I think this is the one that breaks my cherry
Sounds really good and a $25 jump in with beta access is a steal.
Damon Slye you're my hero!!! Best of luck on this endeavor. I will be keeping watch for this one for sure.
I've already pledged without a second thought.
BTW, there is also a nice little write-up about this on the GARPA page of this very website! http://grogheads.com/?p=2981
Are you guys nuts? It looks like War Thunder in WWI skin. Were there WWI dog fights in Switzerland?
Not the Red Baron that we loved.

Well I admit watching the terrain underneath the flying in the video didn't leave me with the impression of being in northern France however I still think Damon is going to put out a quality game. The Mad Otter team kept coming back to the statement that immersion was everything to them.

Is it just me or my lack of flying skills or do you just sit there flying around in circles trying to get in a shot on the other guy in these Red Baron type games? Somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Hah! You mean in all flight 'sims'? Well.. you have horizontal circles, vertical circles, corkscrewing circles.. I suppose when you simplify it so much it does sound like a dog chasing it's tail. The same simplification could be said for any game, however. You could classify strategy games as pushing pieces around over and over (with an occasional die roll for a tabletop one). Shooters as running around and clicking at people you see. Etc etc. :D

LOL....my experience exactly in Over Flanders Fields and Rise of Flight. I love these games but can't seem to figure out how one goes about surviving, no less shoot something down.

Using the vertical is essential for anyone worth their salt in a dogfight sim. It can be tough keeping situational awareness though, and even more so in a video game (even with TrackIR). Going up and over makes it even more difficult to keep sight at times, but you gotta do it else you'll be stuck in flat circles getting wasted by someone managing their energy and using the vertical against you.
One thing I've experienced about
Rise Of Flight is that a steep diving maneuver can scare the ever-loving piss out of me. It's a tribute to that sim's immersion, for sure. Often, when I'm attempting a steep diving attack on someone below me, the sound of the wind increasing speed past my ears along with the creaking/screeching of my aircraft, makes me think that my wings will snap off at any second.
I still haven't played any of the ROF aircraft enough to be intimately familiar with their dive speed limit and associate the sounds the aircraft makes right before breaking up. So it's even more terrifying not having a good grasp on each model's limits. Hell.. you can lose control of the aircraft in certain overspeed situation in some models, which is just as scary. A damn fine sim, even if it puts the fear in me sometimes. ;D

Sid Meyer's Ace Patrol can teach you basic WWI combat tactics. Advantage of altitude, conserving energy, special maneuvers, avoiding ground flak. For a mobile game port it has decent replay value.
I also recommend playing this for seeing the strategy in air combat maneuvers - in a tabletop wargame format. Damn fun! I wish they would add more to it in an expansion or something!

I'm with you... I'll wait on this one. Initial "alpha" movies look very arcade-like. So I'll sit on the side-lines and hope I'm wrong.
Come on guys we're talking about a creation from Damon Slye! ;)
It's gonna be a mother beautiful game. Have a little faith baby. Have a little faith.

I think the Red Baron remake is too little too late, tbh.
We already have an excellent WW1 sim: Rise of Flight.
The kickstarter video does not show anything to be getting excited for if you put it next to RoF, IMHO.
I know it's a prototype, but the physics seem simple and arcade as well.
Don't get me wrong; I have put in countless of hours in Red Baron when I was younger, but this project now just seems like trying to get some money while cruising along on a reputation of old.
But we'll see.
If only you can combine OFF campaign in the ROF engine.
ROF is "soul-less" for me. It's just all about flying and not living the war like in Red Baron.
^+1
I'm not really a hardcore simmer so for me immersion and a living non-linear non-scripted campaign were the highlights of Red Baron and Aces over the Pacific.
I'm really looking forward to that tech tree in the new iteration of Red Baron. Wonder how it is going to be used in game?
I am not a hardcore simmer either and that's why I am psyched for the new Red Baron. IMHO arcadey does not automatically mean bad. I also missed out on the original Red Baron as I didn't have a PC when it was first released. I am aiming to recapture the magic I found on the Amiga with Wings.

Nothing against a RB remake, but we already have
three excellent WW1 sims, including Over Flanders Field and... a third game the name of which I forget but which stands up very well to the other two. (We had a thread on this a while back, dangit, I decided the third game might be the one to get for the campaign options...)

The more WWI, the merrier.
If this one comes with a proper campaign, then I can overlook some other shortcomings.
I'm beginning to wonder if the next version of OFF will ever arrive. What's with that? Seems like I recall them working on it for years now and it's still an unknown. I'm all for someone else giving it a go.. the more competition the better. Unless, perhaps, it's yet more WWII. :P
I have waxed poetically about Red Baron in other threads, but perhaps some points bear repeating...
RB was one of the first flight-sims I played that introduced many concepts that we now consider de rigeur, and some that have (oddly) not been repeated. Things like structural failure due to g-force, pilot black-out / red-out, high-altitude engine freeze, gun jams, sun glare, engine torque, mission recorders, one-on-one pilot challenges, awards, promotions, wound recovery, historical and ahistorical events and outcomes, quick mission builder, pilot campaign, squadron transfers, flight assignment, plane and ordance assignment, balloon attacks, zepplin attacks (sadly left of of RB 3D). I could probably go on.
Admittedly, I haven't had quite the same "feeling" from playing many of the newer flight sims, but perhaps because many of these features are no longer new, and the sense of excitement and enthusiasm that is borne from novelty has worn off.
Although I haven't played RoF, I would like to see something that evokes the sense of immersion that I felt with RB.
But of course, something Korean Air War would be nice. Sigh.
My first impression was negative. My second impression, less negative, but only because hope crept in.
It sounds like they are trying to have their cake and eat it too. They want a great single player experience and a great multiplayer experience, both with great depth. Frankly, I can't see how they can do both.
To have a great SP experience like in OFF, they would need sole focus on that aspect. If they want a great MP game like RoF, that would need to be the sole focus. I don't think you are going to get both in the same package.
Plus, one more thing makes me a little suspicious- they want to create a persistent MP world without a persistent income stream. One-time "purchase and done pricing" isn't going to support the servers for very long.
I will be reading reviews and hoping they can deliver on their lofty promises.
Just got an email that the Kickstarter campaign has been cancelled...
WTH!?!?
EDIT: It's true! They are going to reboot the Kickstarter next year, giving everyone who keeps following them on social media access to the alpha after they repledge during the next campaign:
QuoteAs some of you have noticed and mentioned, the Kickstarter for Red Baron hasn't been quite as successful as we had hoped. We are a new to crowdfunding, and in turn the Red Baron campaign didn't quite reach as many ears as we needed.
That being said, we are going to cancel the Kickstarter campaign... for now. We will still be moving forward with Red Baron with the plans to relaunch the campaign early next year.
In the next few months we will be honing our message and vision, along with improving Red Baron based on the feedback we received from all of you.
What we need you to do is help us grow awareness and community. If we want Red Baron to succeed then we need to get the word out. We will be doing our part, improving Red Baron, but we need your help as well. Please tell friends, invite others to one of our social platforms, share us, tweet us, whatever it is that you do, please do it!
We urge you to head over to Facebook or Twitter and give us a like or follow us so you can stay informed. Additionally we have a website with forums that we will maintain, a place for our community to grow, and a place where we the developers can hear directly from you guys. We are going to be posting developer blogs, design notes, and having frequent talks with you the community.
Finally, we want to thank all of you for your early support and incentivize all of you to get hooked into one of our social media platforms. At the end of November we will be marking down all of the people who have followed us on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Tumblr, or joined our forums. Everyone marked will be given alpha access to the game, as long as the tier you select during our next Kickstarter campaign contains a copy of the game.
Please help us spread the word about Red Baron over the next few months, and together we can build an amazing game. The Red Baron will fly again!

Do people get refunds if they invested?
They didn't get charged yet.
Gotcha...thanks
Yeah I was thinking the same thing and then noticed I wasn't charged. So when it comes around again we just commit...again?
Rinse-repeat. You know we're gonna... ::)
Of course. As a WWI dork, I am contractually obligated.
Just read the email about the cancellation :o... very disappointing, but I'll be keeping my eyes open for the reboot.
Hahaha. Doomed from the start.

Hopefully it's second coming will have addressed some of the concerns people had. Notably the far too cartoonish textures.
Red Baron was my very first computer game played on my very first PC, back in...ugh...1990. It launched my flight sim career, and I've flown just about all of them by now.
For me, it's unthinkable to not support Damon Slye in this endeavor. Yes, it may not end up having the technical perfection of Rise of Flight, or the astounding campaign system of Over Flanders Fields. If it is fun, and reasonably historically accurate....AND sucks in a whole new generation of young kids...I'm all for it.
I'm in.

If they're smart they'll read our last GARPA edition and realize that if they go to Indiegogo and select Flexible Funding then they can keep all funds pledged whether they meet their goal or not.
Problem here is probably that the target audience aren't exactly the kind to embrace modern technology such as whatever a twitter is. You'd need a longer sign up time for us old farts, I had planned to pledge eventually.
I pledged immediately using my coal powered telegraph.
I sent them some nice shiny little rocks with yellow flecks and my best fish-bone amulet via messenger-pterosaur. I hope they credit me for the next go.
That's worth at least a printed manual.

^There's a good chance of that happening.
