Title: Now that the Red Baron remake is on hold..........
Post by: phredd1 on October 30, 2013, 09:36:55 PM
It is time to revise Microprose's Knights of the Sky (KOTS). Granted that Red Baron had better graphics, that fantastic flight recorder, and had a more realistic background, it also had a less realistic flight model than KOTS, IMHO. To me there was a greater difference in the handling of each plane. In KOTS the difference in handling between a Fokker DR 1 vs. a Spad XIII, was far more apparent than in Red Baron. This held true for all the planes.

Also, KOTS, especially after the patch, was far less restrictive in what you could do on a mission. You could choose not to deal with the mission and fly off and do your own thing, trashing enemy airfields, finding and barging in on other dogfights along the front, strafe the trenches, go balloon busting. In fact for the really perverse, you could shoot down friendly pilots to increase your score. In Red Baron if anything goes wrong you generally get punished, IIRC accidentally shooting down someone from your own side ended your career. Lighten up a bit. accidents do happen, some things you can't control.

As it stands now, Manfred von Richtofen would play Red Baron. Lothar von Richtofen and Ernst Udet would play KOTS.

I think the perfect remake would be incorporating KOTS better flight model and some of its freedom of action with Red Baron's superior artwork, and bring back that glorious Flight Recorder with that ability to re-enter the dogfight just before your fatal mistake............that shouldn't be hard to do with today's superior computers.

However, I won't be holding my breath here.............................................................

I would buy that for a dollar.

KOTS was a great game.  Used to play that one on my packard smell.  That's going way back.  I enjoyed KOTS as much as Red Baron.  I can't remember exactly but I think KOTS had a pretty good career mode as well.

Yes it did and it was more accepting of the occasional mission failure, than Red Baron. AFter  reaching Captain or Major you got to select your own home airbase, which really made life more action filled.

^I remember that now.  You're right you could change bases once you climbed the ranks.  I miss that game.

Pretty sure I read that we can do that in the ROF beta campaign too.  The "beta" part kinda scared me away from trying it out, though.  Not sure what condition it's in.
