...a Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tynansylvester/rimworld?ref=live). He wanted $20,000 (CAD). Looks like he'll end up with $265,000+ (CAD).
I caved at the almost last minute and pledged $20. Still an hour to go...

RimWorld is a sci-fi colony sim driven by an intelligent AI storyteller. Inspired by Dwarf Fortress, Firefly, FTL, and Dune.
You begin with three survivors of a shipwreck on a distant world.
Construct buildings to hold living and eating spaces.
Grow food and mine rooms into the rock.
Trade with passing ships.
Decorate your colony to make it into a pleasurable space.
Defend yourself from pirates and ravenous creatures (especially squirrels).
Weather storms and fight fires.
Capture refugees or prisoners and turn them to your side or sell them into slavery.
Your colonists are not professional settlers – they're crashlanded survivors from a passenger liner destroyed in orbit. You can end up with a nobleman, an accountant, and, a housewife. You'll acquire more colonists by capturing them in combat and turning them to your side, buying them from slave traders, or taking in refugees. So your colony will always be a motley crew.
Each person's background is tracked and affects how they play. A nobleman will be great at social skills (recruiting prisoners, negotiating trade prices), but refuse to do physical work. A farm oaf knows how to grow food by long experience, but cannot do research. A nerdy scientist is great at research, but cannot do social tasks at all. A genetically engineered assassin can do nothing but kill – but he does that very well.
RimWorld is a story generator. It's designed to co-author tragic, twisted, and triumphant stories about imprisoned pirates, desperate colonists, starvation and survival. It works by controlling the "random" events that the world throws at you. Every thunderstorm, pirate raid, and traveling salesman is a card dealt into your story by the AI Storyteller.
There are several storytellers to choose from, and each one applies a different algorithm for generating random events. So Randy Random does crazy stuff, Cassandra Classic goes for rising tension, and Phoebe Friendly just makes good things happen. So if you want a different kind of story for your colony, you can just choose a different storyteller.

Happy Colonizing!
I just can't do it. He admitted to stealing the prototype graphics from Prison Tycoon, and that did not sit well with me. I have so many KS projects that have failed to materialize and not having the proper art ready was something that did not bode well, IMHO.
All my space colony hopes are pinned on maia which so far still looks great

*shrug* I don't know. Seems like a lot of the kckstarters are going that route because they have a core game/idea, but need graphic help. I think the dev was fairly up front about borrowing the PA graphic style. With 13x the amount he was looking for, I think he'll be able to come up with some new/custom graphics...

Hell, this is the first time I've seen it and I immediately thought it was a mod for
Prison Tycoon.

Do you mean Prison Architect?
Because this looks nothing like the Prison Tycoon series. :P

Oops! Yes, that is what I mean! Like Steve said, the dev is supposed to put the KS funds toward art assets. But I can't put more money towards unknown devs, I've been burnt too much on that. I, too, am looking forward to Maia.

Yes, you may. :D

Is anyone playing Maia? It just caught my eye on Steam's update summaryies. I'm missing the prison architect graphics comparison, but that may be an old story.
Sorry to dig up such an old thread
i forget where but i recently read an article about this, it sounds awesome - a cross between dwarf fortress and prison architect with a space theme
theres some great lets plays on youtube - i might buy in
I've been keeping tabs on it. It just never hit a decent sale price during the sales.
This is finally out on Steam. A little disappointed by the $29.99 price tag. Anyone still playing this? Is it worth it?
Just bought it. Looks like the learning curve might be a bit steep. :o
This has been on my radar for a looooonnnnggg time but $30 USD is a bit steep for me right now. Might need to wait until August to pick it up.
In a lot of ways it reminds me of prison architect.

Graphically it looks almost exactly like PA. Its hard to believe they are two separate games from two separate developers.
Having fun so far!
I'll pick it up when it hits a sale, i'm resolving to play some of the games i already own...at least until the holiday sale. If i recall correctly i remember reading that some stuff was borrowed from PA with their permission.
FYI: Seems to be a problem with some key fraud. Careful where you buy...

Meanwhile on the game itself; my favorite review from Steam so far:
QuoteAt the start of my game, I picked up a wanderer named Big. The man was a huge slab of muscle, and looked like the man who could get stuff done. Except... he couldn't. The poor guy was too clumsy for his own good, except when it came to his hands and his eyes. All he could do was be a warden, handle animals, hunt, and make art.
When I first saw him I was horrified at how useless he seemed. I built a small shack into the mountain with a small carving bench for him to spend the rest of his days just to be rid of him. However, Jude saw something I didn't. She saw a man with a heart of gold, even if he wasn't the best or the brightest bulb of the bunch. They started hanging out, and eventually Big, or Jude (not entirely sure which) popped the question. Jude was my main gal, I had given her the best of the best, and she earned it. She did everything in the long hours of the night while everyone else slept, and only took her rest as everyone else woke up. But she seemed to do all their work by herself.
Tragedy struck, raids happened, and soon enough there were just 4 people out of 8, in the dead of winter, forced to cannibalize those who fell in raids. However, even after being infected with Sensory Mechanites, forced to endure excruciating pain, and watch her friends die, Jude didn't break. She appreciated those nights with Big and the art he had made. The others did too, seeing hope in the art carved into grains of wood.
Winter ended, things were looking good, until a raid blindsided them while Big was on a hunt (even though he wasn't able to lift the kill, his aim was great enough that he was the safest hunter). Big went down, but he was a fighter and held on. He watched as his friends, NO, his family held off the raiders with the help of turrets Jude had made. 1, 2 went down. The third decided to cut their losses and ran home, but not without grabbing Big first. The others fought to save him, but none could quite match his skill with a gun.
The raiders called for a trade, silver for him. Sadly, they had just used the last of their silver to finish sterilizing the hospital floor. With heavy hearts, they were forced to decline the trade. Not even a day later, they got the news. Big died of infection from his injuries, not quite able to hold on as they scraped together every scrap of silver they could to try and save him.
This was the tale of the witling watcher. (He usually carved in the prisoner room, and watched the prisoners while doing so.
And thats the tale of how I save scummed for the first time ever for a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ pawn.
(The bold at the end was original to the review. :D )
Looks fun but at $30 it's above my threshold for Indy titles that I'm not sure I will get hooked on...
Going to wait and see if it goes on a sale sometime, although the good stories I see are definitely going to tempt me.
So far I really like this game. And it looks like there are a lot of options to make it interesting and increase replayability. This game draws you in and before you know it an hour or two have passed. Well worth it at $30 IMO but I understand those wanting to wait, especially just after a Steam Summer Sale.
I bought this direct from the the developer back when UCG was writing these little AARs:
http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=14439.0
Now it's on Steam I was able to get a Steamkey from the dev's website. Still fun and bizarre at the same time. Great for generating wacky scifi stories.
I looked this over today. It looks interesting. How has it developed? Is it still developing? Any good?
The sole fact that you can travel the whole planet now instead of being confined to your map is a huge game changer. O0
I find the game very fun and a good challenge.
;D :DD
"Randy sends cargo pods full of milk" must be a double entendre. :2funny:
This game has been out for a while now and has "overwhelmingly positive" Steam reviews. BUT...what is the Grog conclusion?
I think it's a great game if you're into Dwarf Fortress style base management games with a sci fi twist. The temperature mechanics are a really nice change of pace from the usual norm, though there's no elevation levels so no multi-story or underground bases. There are a lot of really cool features like bionics, drug addiction, interpersonal relationships, etc. Also, you can play as a real monster and do stuff like have a The Road-esque cannibal camp with human prisoners to provide for meat. Like Crusader Kings, being a horrible person is somewhat encouraged by the mechanics, and thus the meme culture around the game heavily revolves around crimes against humanity, but despite that you can still thrive and do well by playing a colony of decent human beings if that's how you roll.
One time I had a random NPC wander into my camp during the night and try to steal food from my freezer. I woke up my guys and had them subdue the intruder and take him prisoner. I built a makeshift prison to hold him while I planned to befriend him and have him join our camp (as opposed to the alternatives, such as starving him and breaking his will through abuse). Anyway, the next night he breaks free from his prison and tries to run. One of my colonists took an automatic shotgun and casually stepped onto the porch of the main town building, and let loose a volley of buckshot in the direction of the escaping prisoner. The guy got his right arm shot off and was bleeding heavily. My colonist with the shotgun simply reloaded and went back to bed. I thought this was a pretty funny turn of events, so I let the AI take its course and handle the dying prisoner as they deemed fit. They let him slowly bleed out through the night, and at sunrise he was still alive in a pool of blood next to his severed arm. That's when I decided it went a bit too far and mercy killed him.
In any case, I easily could have handled that situation a good bit more ethically, or with a lot more war crimes.
To the people that are scared of the $30 entry fee - don't be!
It's an amazing game, and you can mod it beyond belief quite easily and make it exactly what you want.
Personally, my game is set up to have more weaponry in it than I can ever see all of, more factions than I can ever encounter all of, so many animals it's crazy.
My latest playthrough, I had a squad of highly skilled cavalrymen riding around on extremely fast horses with DMR weaponry, hunting Tyrannosaurus Rexes across the map, to fashion carpets out of them in my heavily fortified cavern fortress surrounded by traps to stop any intruder. - I usually play on the hardest difficulty now, so I'm constantly attacked by raiding aliens, mechanoids and whatever else horrible stuff the game has to throw at me. And I love it!
The first time I played the game, I lost all my colonists within 20 minutes to a rabid squirrel. xD Didn't know what to do about it, but you figure these things out, and this game is as much about the hilarious stories you get to take part of on the way. It's not about the destination - it's about the journey. Truly an amazing game.
God damn. I'm gonna have to play it now. It's been a while!
^ Nice, mind posting your mod list? The Steam Workshop page is a bit of a jungle due to the high volume of mods of varying quality.
I picked up the Ideologies expansion and it's pretty impressive what they've done with this game. You can effectively customize the "culture" of your settlement and what they find acceptable, unacceptable, revolting, etc. It reminds me a bit of the custom religions in Crusader Kings 3, except that you can set the degree of severity for each tenet. So for example, you can make adultery anywhere from acceptable to a minor faux pas to a grievous crime worthy of the harshest punishment. Or you can create a totally barbaric nudist cannibal culture where murder is seen as a fun pastime and slavery is a part of daily life. Or pretty much anything in between that and the good guys from The Road.
I also like how the systems interact, so if your ideology is focused on individualism and expressing yourself however you want, your followers will frown upon you if you set a required hat or outfit. It's also cool how you can start with a really basic and undefined ideology, and let it develop naturally through the course of the game. In my latest game, I'm basically going for an individualist "honorable outlaw" style settlement, but we'll see what course I take when things start to get more dangerous...
I think my favorite so far is the zombie mod. You give yourself x number of days to build a safe haven before the hordes begin arriving. Super fun.
