Title: Huge RoF sale
Post by: Toonces on March 24, 2012, 09:52:50 PM
RoF is having a sale in celebration of their latest version release.  It's 50% off most airplanes, field mods, etc.  A few of the planes aren't marked down, but most are.  A lot are only $3.

If you're looking to flesh out your hangar, this is a good time to do so.  I spent $46 and got almost everything on the menu except the big ones or the really pricey ones.

I quite literally just bought the E-III, Gotha, and DFW C.V. and just tried a quick flight in each. I tried a quick scramble in all three
and face planted the latter two before I could cop any real air. This learning curve is gonna suck...
I'm looking forward to the flying boats as I've always had an affinity for amphib planes since my dad owned a Republic SeaBee
when I was a youngster. Hopefully the price tag won't be too high.

In case anyone is wondering, RoF = Rise of Flight (http://riseofflight.com/en).

IMPORTANT NOTES ON 1.026

1. If your guns don't fire on ground - don't hurry to worry. It's new model of synchronizer gear - nose MGs will not fire until your propeller is spinning.
2. Pay your attention on new gun controlling commands. Check for this thread (http://riseofflight.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?p=434563&f=2#p434563) (last part of Jason's post) for detailed notes. Take in attention - these commands have default mapping only in default input profile. If you're using your existing non-default input profile from previous version (1.025 or earlier) than you need to map these new commands by yourself.
3. Please take in attention: selecting and de-selecting of pilot guns weapon modifications is causing the full replacement of plane payload variants list. So, when you are selecting / de-selecting your pilot guns variants on weapon modes tab - this will reset your payload selection on the payload tab.
4. Important to know: Additional over-wing gun of all Albatros planes (D.II, D.III, D.Va) and of R.E.8 are not aligned with nose guns convergence point even in default position. This is like it was in real. So, "Forward-facing guns fire" command will not affect upper gun on these planes anyway. Use "Over wing guns fire" command for them.
5. Some of over wing guns are required to be elevated (happens automatically when you hit "Recharge/Rearm" key) to be rearmed or recharged, some guns are not. This is depending on gun mount construction and height.
6. Blowback bolt guns like Lewis and Becker can't be re-charged when they're charged allready, while recoil-operated guns (Vickers, Parabellum, Spandau) can be re-charged in this case. This is historicaly correct.
7. We strongly recommend you to read this thread to know more about new gun mechanics and controls.

I fear the learning curve that Staggerwing predicts.

For us dangerously inept virtual fliers, does RoF have a casual mode? Can flight models/complexities be toggled a la IL-2?

Have I ever been in a Turkish prison?

Perhaps the most frustrating thing about RoF is how whenever it updates it completely breaks the game.  Like, first, you can't fly the sim at all until you update it...no option there.  It checks, sees an update is available, and then you can't fly until you patch the sim.  I hate that.  Second, when it updates, like this one apparently does, it can initialize all of your controls back to default so you have to re-map everything.  That is a real pain!

The sim isn't all that hard, really.  I mean, it's WW1.  You start the engine, stick back- trees get smaller, stick forward- trees get bigger, point the nose at the bad guy and pull the trigger.  This isn't Falcon 4 or DCS.

I like all of the details here, but honestly, I'd rather have the old guns and have them devote a LOT more time to the beta career mode.  It is boring.  I'm seriously considering reinstalling OFF simply because the offline campaign in RoF sucks.

I installed Wilson's campaign generator on Monday but I haven't had a chance to mess with it yet.  Really it's a random mission generator.  There is nothing in RoF that is even remotely equivalent to OFF's campaign.  It's very frustrating.

Interesting priorities there, chap!

@Meadbelly, despite Toonces' assertions, I think RoF is quite tricky.  There are "easy" options, but the standard wisdom is that you won't learn properly like that.  I personally think it's a very good sim, and I like the satisfaction gained from clawing my way up that learning curve.  I do, however, base my judgement solely on what I've experienced in simple quick battles (to learn the planes) and multiplayer.  I'm a piss-poor combat pilot, but I enjoy MP because the atmosphere is more realistic than SP, to my mind.  Basically, I'd heartily recommend it for MP, but if you're not into that, then I can't say either way.
Title: Re: Huge RoF sale
Post by: meadbelly on June 28, 2012, 06:11:57 PM
^I'm going to put high on my consider list. I've enjoyed a couple of "realistic" combat flight sims in the Wayback, but really had to put the time into learning them (Microprose's Gunship 2000 + F117 Nighthawk, Jane's Longbow AH-64D). I don't have the same kind of time these days, and those were so long ago that whatever "skills" I developed are long gone. Now the best I can do is something like OpFlashpoint's (the original) helos. . . using the H button for hover! (Seriously, they ought to consider installing those on actual helicopters.)

"Point down, trees bigger" / easy flight mode might be just what I need to scratch the flight itch, while flying poorly.

What's to consider?  It's free to play.  Give it a whirl and if you like the two free planes, fling money at the company to buy more.  I'm just waiting on the next sale to get me some sweet, sweet rockets and upward firing Lewis guns.

Title: Re: Huge RoF sale
Post by: Toonces on June 28, 2012, 07:24:58 PM
When I say easy to fly, what I mean primarily is that there aren't many buttons/systems to have to learn.  I contrast it with something like DCS:A-10, a sim I bought on sale a while ago but I simply do not have the time and patience to learn the plane's systems while simultaneously relearning my muscle memory on my HOTAS.

For RoF (or OFF for that matter), you really need two or three buttons on your stick to work- trigger to fire all guns, a button to cock/cycle the guns to clear jams, and well really that's it.  I have the cooler and fuel mixture also mapped to my stick and a button for the map...and I think that's all.  Pretty straightforward.

Now, actually FLYING the planes proficiently is hard.  And getting kills is hard.  You really need to put your pipper on the bad guy and hold it there for a while in the early planes before you get incediary bullets.  If you're going to start with a plane, fly the German ones.  I find the German planes overwhelmingly easier to fly than the Allied planes.

If you like the free demo, definitely keep your eyes open for the Iron Cross Edition; it goes on sale for $10 pretty frequently and comes with a very nice planeset.  I bought my copy at fspilotshop.com or something like that but I've seen it at other places on sale from time to time (Amazon, etc.).

Finally, I wouldn't be surprised if 777 has a big sale for July 4th, so definitely keep your eyes open on that.

I have to say I was fully aware and had no issues with RoF charging model. I've always stuck up for it - I also didn't mind with the extra equipment mods...take em or leave em - same as the aircraft

But I think charging for weapon upgrades (basically increasing authenticity from what I gather) is a step too far. Granted they've put work into it but paying for that which means the guy next to you has the exact same aircraft only better modelled weaponry - not right.

Sorry - but they have lost me with this latest addition. It's a step too far in the charging model I thought was not only fair but priced fairly decently.

I kind of feel the same way....however, I have to keep reminding myself they are not doing any version releases every year at $49 like very other vendor does when they add all these new features.  So although I don't like paying for every little thing, I guess one could justify buying enough of these little things to the point you would have bought their yearly upgrade anyway.

Actually, JD, the weapon mods are not to do with improved models, but new, additional functionality.  I was against it 'coz I saw it as "pay to win".  However, it turns out that sticking more guns on your plane gives a genuine (hopefully realistic) hit to performance, so it's not that clear cut, which is pleasing.  Another thing I had against it is that it is really decreasing authenticity - a lot of the additions they've introduced were very rare.

Yup, they're pretty much impossible to hit anything with, but they're still fun to shoot!

I put together a quick little mission to play with them.

Lake map, autumn 1918

3x Sopwith Pup  with 8 rockets each (me as flight leader)
3x Sopwith Triplane (random AI skill level)
3x Nieuport 17 (average AI skill level)

vs.

4x Albatross DIII (veteran skill level)
4x Albatross DIII (random skill level)
2x Fokker Dr I (ace skill level)

vehicles, balloons, ships, and facilities enabled.

I missed with the rockets but shot a truck and 4 Jerries down out of spite before ending the mission.

They added weapon mods to the two free planes.  FOR FREE! WHEEEEEEEE!!!

The SPAD 13 gets balloon buster machine guns.  They fire incendiary ammo and are purposely inaccurate in order the spray the balloon full of holes.

The Albatross D.Va gets a caputred Lewis gun that mounts on the upper wing.  Set the convergence right and this thing is deadly.

The mods are a bit tricky to find.  When you create a quick mission, the mods won't appear in the drag down menu.  You have to create the mission, then start it and when it brings up the map, select your plane in the Hangar....

and click the weapon mod tab on the screen in the upper right in order to select a weapon mod.

Are the rockets included based on real life? Are they more intended for air-to-air or air-to-ground, or does it not really matter because of their inaccuracy?

The feeling of flight is fantastic, but outside of the actual flight sim portion of the game, there's not much depth to the single player experience.  Campaigns are kind of lifeless and generic feeling (but better than they used to be).  I just set up quick missions and get my fix that way.  The planes are just so much fun to fly and each plane feels unique.

A joystick with a twist handle for rudder will be fine.

If you're feeling inclined, a TrackIR makes this and pretty much any flight sim a million times more immersive.

The F2P is definitely an eye-opener.  Really good intro to the game.

Just like SDR, I was amazed by the graphics and the feeling of flight.   But decided not buy the game because it was a little too hard for me (can't shoot anything down).  No substantial elements to add to immersion beyond the flying part.

RoF was what I was dreaming about the future when I was playing the original Red Baron in 1990.

So happy that neoqb(now Studio 777) went all the way and did it right. I will be a sustaining customer for them as long as they keep developing the sim.

I was doing the training mission where I had to avoid AA fire and then shoot down a German balloon.  I lost track of how many time I did the mission before I did it right.  (Any if there is a way to speed up the game when flying to an objective?)  I would either run into the balloon or miss on the first couple passes and get shot down by the AA fire.  I finally beat it though, and it felt good.

I'm craptastic at it too. I get the feeling if you don't have a good joystick with proper yaw and a TrackIR rig you can't do well.... Or maybe I just really suck....  :P

Well, it is a simulation, afterall. It's not going to be like jumping into World of Tanks. Flying a WWI air combat sim takes time and effort. But it sounds like you guys are having fun with it, even though it's challenging.

Just stick with it and you'll eventually get the hang of it. Small inputs into the controls will help at first. Try to avoid the "yank & bank" syndrome until you have a better feel for the controls.

At least with RoF, you don't have all the switches and buttons to worry about like in a modern jet sim.   :)

;D Funny but I used to be OK with all the buttons and knobs of the jet sims..... Maybe it's just age and low tolerance for repetitive actions that don't change the out come...  :P

Yes.  Im typing from my phone right now so I can't recall 100% but it is either the + and - keys at the top in the keyboard or the [ and ] bracket keys.

Thanks I'll have to give it a try next time I am in game.

When I first started I kept crashing before taking off and I couldn't figure out why my plane wouldn't drive straight.  I finally took the time to watch the tutorial video and realized I need to use my rudder to keep straight.

Just out of curiosity does anyone know why the SPAD pulls right like that?

I imagine that, since many of these planes were of such light construction, the spinning of the propeller and engine could induce a bank and roll. This would have been worst in rotary engines but might also affect in-line engines.
Title: Re: Huge RoF sale
Post by: Silent Disapproval Robot on July 04, 2012, 07:24:24 PM
Yup, that is torque from the spinning prop and it is worse with rotary engines.  Once you are flying you'll find that the effect will persist and you'll have trouble holding sustained turns if you're turning against the direction of torque.

OTOH, Anthony Fokker once convinced the German Air Service that his planes' tendency to quickly bank right was a 'feature' to be exploited by a good pilot during a dogfight. Were he living now he would have fit right in at Microsoft...

Thanks for the info guys.  Knowing nothing of WWI flight this is all very interesting.  Now I just need to figure out how to dogfight correctly.  I know it will take some practice and patience but I just can't seem to get around behind the enemy plane.

Try the Albatross D.Va instead.  For the most part, the German planes are much easier to fly than the Entente planes.

The SPAD 13 has a really twitchy rudder on it so it's hard to stay on target in a sustained turn.

Agreed with the recommendation to stick with the German planes at first.  They seem much easier to fly IMO.

When you get better, you will learn to use the torque of the engine and various quirks of the planes to your advantage.  I learned a lot of this flying Aces High 2, where many of the planes had very strong torque in one direction or the other.  The Bf-109K4, in particular, had an extraordinary pull to the left which you could exploit with careful throttle management.  Some of the brit planes torqued right, so if you were in the 109 and could lure a Brit into turning left with you, you could beat even a better-turning aircraft.

Some of the Allied planes in RoF have very interesting flight characteristics.  I can't remember which one, I think the SE-5, has this horrible adverse yaw that could just throw me every time.

Hey, nice to finally find another Aces High pilot! What was your callsign on AH? Mine was "Wanker". I flew AH from day one until 2004.

Both English and American idioms lose some of their potency when they crisscross the Pond. After that they become internet callsigns.  :D

Ok, watched the video and downloading the "Free 2 Play" version.  Questions.  1) Will I be continuously flying in circles trying to get on the tail of my target only to have a split second to shoot before I over take the target or before it turns again and we endlessly repeat the "circle of death" ride?* and 2) Will I need to dig out a joystick to properly enjoy this game? 3) Is it really $7-$15 for every model airlplane that you want to add?

* I'm being cynical purposely because I really stink at combat flight simulators and yet my question bares the truth about my experiences playing combat flight simulators.

1.  I don't think you'll be going around in endless circles, unless you choose to.  If you do that against me I'm going to eat your lunch.

2.  Yes, you absolutely need a joystick, and if no rudder pedals I highly recommend a twisty stick (you can get these for not much money nowadays).  A TrackIR is a huge plus for RoF and any sim for that matter.

3.  Yes, but only if you choose to pay full price.  I VERY HIGHLY recommend looking around for Rise of Flight Iron Cross Edition on the online stores; it goes on sale for $10 fairly frequently and will hook you up with 7 more planes.  That will keep you amused a long time.  Then, await another RoF sale like the one at the start of this thread and cherry pick the planes you really want for $3 apiece or so.

I posted this elsewhere, but here's a short MP video I made a while back and while not necessarily representative, it does show that it's not all going around in circles...

Stormpowered (the guys that do Jutland and Distant Guns) have Iron Cross for $14.95.  I don't know what kind of hoops you have to jump through to buy something from them...it seems they have some sort of Steam-esque interface.

50% off sale on many items for the next week or so, 21-28 Sep.  There are some exceptions, I'm copying sale text below:

Pilots,

We have just launched one of our popular 50% Off Sales all items in the store, except the most recent releases and pre-orders and Weapon Mods. Now is the time to stock your hangar for the Autumn. Next sale opportunity is not till later in the Holiday season.

http://riseofflight.com/en/store

Remember, buying items in the store helps fuel the team for more planes and features in the future!

Edit: Sorry for the confusion on the Weapon Mods. They are not on sale this time. My apologies for any confusion or inconvenience.

We hope you enjoy!

The ROF Team

The first amphib plane has been released already so you can fire up the lake map and go play in the water if you like.  The 1.28b hotfix patch has added water based physics to all planes so you can go and try to dip wings and wheels in the water to see what effect it has.  (Feels pretty cool if you have a force feedback joystick.)

I knew the Brandenburg was out but I wasn't aware of the water physics having been implemented. Too bad there's no sale on the new aircraft.  :(

There were several people complaing about problems with the RoF server on SimHQ yesterday, so it wasn't just you.  They couldn't access the online modes in game, which is always a downside of this type of DRM...
