I just notice that every time I purchase a game (usually an RPG), you already own it. ;D
It looks like Baldur's Gate meets modern day game development. I have been waiting for a game like this since the original NWN let me down.
Yeah, I can't figure out why no one is making isometric party-based D&D games. They are all single character or party based where you only control one guy. I want to control all of them

About once a month I spend an evening searching Steam and GamersGate hoping someone has released something I've missed that is exactly this. Of course, they haven't, so I decide to fire up something older, like Baldur's Gate or NWN 2, and then I'm disappointed because it just doesn't play like a modern game.
Last week I broke down and bought Blackguards in the hopes of getting at least a partial fix. It's ok, but really is more "fantasy X-com" than a real RPG. Pillars looks like the Great Hope of the near future...
Speaking of top-down party control RPGs- Avadon 2: The Corruption looks pretty good. Anyone played it?

I still haven't played the previous two releases from them. :-\
That looks pretty sweet. Watched the video and read the article. As much of a paper and pencil D&D'er that I was, PC RPG's have never been able to grab me (ToEE being the only exception), but this one looks really nice.
A new trailer is up on RPG Watch.com. The more I watch, the more it looks a lot like the older Temple of Elemental Evil. The way the characters run, the player icons at the bottom of the screen. http://rpgwatch.com/#28247
I believe the Beta is supposed to come out tomorrow or something like that.
And the full game comes out in 2 days! :)
Whaaaaat! I haven't been able to finish an RPG game since BG-2. Hope this is the one
this looks pretty sweet. although i haven't even cracked open Divinity Original Sin which i bought during the Steam winter sale... and barely scratched the surface of Wasteland 2...
I love these isometric RPGs in theory, but can never seem to get far into them, no matter how cool I think they are. Never got too far in BG2 or Icewind Dale either...
I'm leaning toward pre-purchase for this one--- against my usual wait for the reviews and opinions. I know Obsidian has a history of buggy releases but this one's been in development for years and so should be bug free. My only concern is it different enough from Baldur's Gate/ Icewind Dale to be interesting but at the same time enough like them to be great games. There's a whole slew of videos on Youtube showing off the games good points. And I like what I'm seeing-- so far. Greenman Gaming has it for $33 in the VIP section.
I am ignoring this title until the singing of its praises is deafening.

There's every reason to believe that this one will be excellent.
I won't be preordering because that's just
silly but I imagine it won't be long after release before I pull the trigger.
I like Obsidian a great deal and this game is a definite purchase for me. The only complaint I have with Obsidian games is that they are at times too ambitious and unfocused. I think I judged KOTOR 2 too harshly when it first came out because KOTOR was so brilliant. As time passed though, I really enjoyed KOTOR 2. NWN 2 hit the same chord with me at first, but also grew on me later. Mask of the Betrayer was a very good game too.
Overall, Obsidian has my confidence and I think they have made Baldurs Gate 3. I'm sure it will be good, but lets hope it will be that good.
^In terms of story NWN2 was quite better than the first one, which also lacked party mechanics, one of the staple parts of D&D.

I must be the only one, because isometric view kind of annoys me. I don't like not seeing what's out there past the edges of the screen and find myself wanting to get into the head of the character so I can see past that. As close as enemies get when they're right at the edge of the screen, it doesn't make sense that I cannot see them before that.

I love this type of game but I do understand what you're getting at. Depends on the game. Some limit your view to a considerable degree while others offer a much larger view of your surroundings. Surprisingly, the original Baldur's Gate, done with the more recent Enhanced version, added a zoom-out feature that worked quite well to expand your view. I just hope my 6+ year old rig can run the game. It struggles with Divinity: Original Sin.

Pre-Ordered! That is the first time I have pre-ordered a game since The Old Republic.
I used my 20% off coupon from Paradox and bought it. Hope they let me remap the keys.
I guess I should rephrase any hate for isometric views on my part: I DO like it in Dragon Age: Origins. You can zoom out to get a top down view, but when you zoom in, you're looking the same direction as your character.
I backed this, and grabbed my Steam key this evening. It's preloading now. 6GB! Whatever's in there, there's a lot of it!
I've intentionally not been keeping up with the development diaries and the like and intentionally opted out of the beta. I want this to be as much like the Baldur's Gate experience as possible - I want to discover a new world and not have any idea in advance what I might find. I'm really hoping for some old school magic on this one.

That's too bad. The good thing about baseball is that there's always tomorrow. And the reason I am in here stinking up the thread with horsehide and pine tar is because this looks like thee kind of game I should enjoy mightily. And I am looking forward to impressions.
Just played a couple of hours of it, and I'm hooked. If you're a Baldur's Gate I/II or NWN I/II fan this is going to appeal to you. It's very much the modernization of those game engines. Playing it was immediately comfortable and intuitive to me. It's just not set in the Forgotten Realms setting.
Really nice character customization options. I messed around for a good while creating my character, which I typically don't do on a first play. Lots of lore and background is made available even at the character creation stage, making it easy to build a character that fits in with the world building.
Once you get started on the first part of the game conversations you have with NPCs fill in more of your background based on answers you provide. Really a nice and immersive means of adding depth to your character.
Combat is real-time pausable. It feels like BG or NWN combat, but refined. There appears to be a suitably deep selection of skills and feats as you level up to allow you to build really variable characters within a class. Not all fighters, for example, are going to be alike.
Graphically it's very nice. It feels/looks like a refined NWN 2. Exploration is a big deal. It is not open world, but area maps. The area maps I've seen so far are pretty focused and didn't require me to do a lot of random wandering without much going on.
Definitely an RPG with an emphasis on RP. I'm early into it but there's clearly a significant story here that I just beginning to get pieces of. There's been a LOT of world building with real thought into cultures and their motivations, history, and how that's created the world you're in. And this is an old world. It seems like there are going to be a lot of ruins and signs of older civilizations to explore. It feels ancient and lived in.
Several different races to play, with significant differences in their base stats. The traditional human, elf, dwarven races are in, but there are at least two other major races that are playable and aren't clear analogs to traditional fantasy races. Within each race there are different cultures and ethnicities.
There's also a nice mix of classes ranging from the traditional fighter, rogue, wizard, priest classes to new classes like chanters. I had a hard time deciding what to be because several of them seemed really appealing. The different classes combined with the different races and backgrounds suggest a lot of replayability.
So far, this is very much what I was hoping for when I backed the project. So far, there's not been a ton of dramatically innovative stuff here in terms of combat or plot - this game is exactly what it says on the tin, a hearkening back to classic RPGs of the Obsidian/Black Isle era of Bioware games. It isn't going to be a radically different approach, but rather a king-sized serving of what made those games great, with improved graphics and gameplay. I'm pretty happy with that.
I have put some time in it today. So far I think its awesome. The inspiration from the Baldur's Gate series is obvious and pretty much in your face. The graphics, UI, gameplay, combat, and overall options are evolved as would might expect 15 years on.
The story telling so far is very solid and vivid. Its not some flashy, kids tame D&D universe. There is a certain tree early on that will clue you in on that. I haven't done enough combat to make a firm judgment, but it operates on party mechanics and the character system (attributes, skills, talents) is a custom to Pillars system. You get a taste of the group mechanics early on and they are extremely similar to BG, but I am not experienced enough with the game to know really how everything works.
If you are a fan of BG, this is a no-brainer. If you like games that are heavy on exploration and difficult, party based combat; you can't really go wrong.
I put about an hour in, mostly just making my character and going through the opening scene/tutorial. It definitely looks and plays a lot like Baldur's Gate/Temple of Elemental Evil. I like the fact that there seems to be a lot of detail on the character sheets and in the log entries that you can drill down into if you so desire. I also like that you can slow down the default combat speed and set it to auto-pause at time intervals of your choosing as well as when specific events happen. (It's still a little too fast for my liking though, even at slow speed).
I've found a few bugs already. If you remap the keys to the arrows or the number-pad, your new assignments will work but those keys also seem to be reserved for sub-menu scrolling (arrows) and formation pre-sets (numpad). The reserved keys don't appear in the key bindings menu so there doesn't appear to be an easy way to fix this. I'll see if I can find a conf.ini type file to piddle around with when I get back home.
Setting seems to be pretty typical high fantasy stuff. Humans, grumbly dwaves, and faggy elves are all present. The sneaky little guy hobbit race is there as well but this time it's some sort of rabbity humanoid thing. The half-orc type big bruiser race is also available but it's some sort of fish-man thing. Got your usual character classes as well. Fighters, rangers, barbarians, paladins, rogues, wizards, druids, healer/cleric, chanter, etc.
If you like party based RPGs, this one seems like it could be a decent addition to the genre.
Thanks for the impressions, everyone. It sounds extremely promising.
Based on everything I'm hearing, then, it seems that the $45 price point is quite reasonable.
I've got a huge enough backlog of cRPG's that I don't need this right now. I mean, I just don't. But I'm enjoying hearing about you all grooving on it!
Sold - bastards!
I take it then that you only create the one character with the rest of the party coming as npc's which you then control and level up. This worked well in the original BG games. But in all honesty, I enjoyed the Wasteland 2 method where you create all your main party members with other npc's coming and going as the story unfolds.
You can create other characters and have them join your party at the inn.

Excellent....thanks. Looking forward to this game some time soon.
^^ You could hack the Balders/Icewind games like that, too (or at least BG1, and I don't know why they'd take that out). Since the games were designed for a co-op option (with whoever is currently top of the list being the 'main character' for plot, including at least one plot-related instadeath in BG1 which kills the game if only one player put his character in the lead ;) ), it's entirely possible to go to multiplayer, fill out as much of the list as you want with created characters, and then play that multiplayer game solo in control of all the characters. Keep a slot open to add plot-triggering NPCs if necessary.
Promptly wishlisting if I haven't done already, but dang I haven't even finished BG1 and NWN1, much less the other things (including Planescape: Torment, TEE). Waaaay too much good RPG backlog to add to it. :-\
I've barely scratched the surface yet but will echo the above impressions. So far very stable on my older system and beautiful to look at. But plenty of new features to separate and improve the play from BG. You can really get down in the weeds with all kinds of numbers and stats if you want but just click and move works well too. You can make this game complex if you want, but don't have to. Also pretty tough on "Normal" difficulity so I'd recommend just playing on "Easy" while you get comfortable with and then jump up a level if you want. Character Creation is a load of fun by itself. Lots of neat features to make play more enjoyable and very polished overall. More thoughts soon.

More character mechanic options = more replayability. :)
Just read the stat, skill, etc descriptions and just pick stuff that sounds like it synergizes. ^-^

Gamespot just posted a video with character creation tips. There doesn't seem to be any one type superior to others. They all have strengths and weaknesses. Probably simplest is the fighter/tank at the start.

I'm about to head to the main city. If the cities are anything like the villages, they'll be impressive. I also have my stronghold now, which is a really neat feature of the game.
My party is up to five now, all 4th level. We're starting to put out some mean firepower. Having a larger party really expands the tactical options.
I still haven't seen any cities. I just nabbed a stronghold as well but haven't done much with it other than basic repairs. I've got 6 in my party and they're kind of a wrecking crew now but I'm finding 6 can be hard to manage at times, even when I'm using slow speed. I need old guy with left blinker on speed.
The weird keyboard conflicts caused by remapping controls to the numpad are causing me some issues now that my party has expanded as the 1-6 keys not only complete the task I assigned to them but also select the character in that numbered slot. I may have to re-remap things. Fortunately the game is easily controlled by mouse.
I just made it out of the opening intro "dungeon crawl" and exited the map headed to some forest on the way to the city. Not sure If I'm supposed to stop there or not...I have no party yet
This is a great rpg....I was enjoying Divinity:OS but I think Pillars is, so far, a much more enjoyable game.
I almost made it through the weekend without buying this. Almost.
I'm enjoying it too but I'm kind of stuck right now. XP gains work a little differently in this game than in your usual RPG. You don't gain XP just for killing enemies. You gain XP for fleshing out details in your bestiary so if you encounter a new type of enemy, you'll get a good chuck of xp after you defeat it and record what you learned about it in your journal. If you already know everything there is to know about a critter, you won't gain any more xp just from fighting it.
Anyway, I'm at a point where I need to level up in order to take on the two encounters that are impeding my progress but I've pretty much done all the side quests I can and can't find any new enemy types to thump in order to gain more XP. I've got 8 characters to choose from (1 I made in the inn, the others I found along the way) I guess I'll try swapping out different party members to see if I can eke out a win against either of the fights that are kicking my behind right now.
I think my next character will be a Dwarf Barbarian. I can't think of anything funnier than a Dwarf Barbarian unless it's an Elf Barbarian. ::)
I made a man-fish barbarian as party filler at the inn early on in my game. Switching out the chanter for the Druid helped me get past the battles where I was stuck. The chanter seems kind of weak to me. It takes him too long to charge up a chant and the battle's usually decided by the time he is able to use it.
I've made 3 of my party members at the inn. I'm not sure how it'll play out other than perhaps some side quests and companion back story.

Being able to create characters at the inn rather than just hire on pre-made ones is one of this games great features. One head-scratcher I discovered last night is that you can't use a healing scroll after combat to heal up an injured party member. It says it can only be used while in combat. Makes little sense...I wonder why it was designed that way?
I have been waiting for an answer to this question in the Obsidian forums. Maybe you guys can help.
When you hit an enemy, the damage done pops up above the enemy. When your player takes damage, nothing happens. You have to look at the combat log to see how much damage was done to your character.
Am I missing something? Is there a way to turn on a damage bubble above your characters.?
I just made it to the Inn, how do I create my own characters to build a party? Right now I only have the elf outside...NPC

I don't think I've been seeing a damage bubble above foes, let alone my characters. I went looking for settings a bit ago but didn't find anything. I'll have to watch more closely when I get back to the game this evening
I think Pillars is heading for the same unplayed pile along with Divinity and Wasteland 2. Maybe it just that I suck at these games. But they always go the same; I really enjoy it for awhile, then I just run into a brick wall, and go from challenging but beatable fights, to being 2-3 shot by whatever I'm fighting.
If you hover the cursor over your character during combat, you can see the damage being done and status. This game continues to impress me. After completing the ruins as an Easy/ Fighter, I went back and started over again as a Normal/ Paladin. The combat was quite a bit harder but not brutal, with different creatures encountered, some new dialog choices( because of different skills) and loot, and the most surprising thing was, SPOILER ALERT: after the camp fight, the Rouge was badly injured and needed to rest. The female fighter was against this and they went back and forth until I made the call to camp to let the little guy heal and afterward she ran-off and left us. WTF? And took our waterskins with her. Fortunately they were recoverable later but I had to complete the ruins with just me and the Rouge. Tough. Love the Scout/Stealth option.

Continued SPOILER ALERT: This happened in my game too, playing on easy as a ranger. I came upon her dead body in that central circle with the glowing runes puzzle and got all her equipment. I still can't figure out why it won't let you cast a healing scroll after combat....only works during combat?

There are skills that perform what in other games a healing scroll will do, and I believe you can use potions outside of combat. I had the chanter pick up a skill called "triage" or "battlefield triage." and it works to restore health during non-combat situations. I think scrolls are all strictly combat.
That's no bear. That's a Space Station!!! Got my ass handed to me in about 10 sec. Had to try him out though. He is pretty. The red from my blood goes very well with his brown fur.

Note that I say this with no intention of dissing you - but if you're running into this across all three of those games, then yes, you're probably doing something wrong. It may be an issue with how you're allocating skills to your characters, such that they aren't keeping up with the difficulty ramp of new areas. Or, it might be that you aren't grasping the best ways to use the different classes in your party, or your tactics aren't working and you need a different approach to the fight. Finally, in some games, you might just have run into an area that you aren't ready for and you need to go do something else, first.
Certainly I run into fights where I get a party wipe - that's part of the game. When that happens I stop and think about the encounter and what caused me to get overwhelmed so quickly. In the case of Pillars, a couple of thoughts:
First, make sure you are pausing during combat. Don't just let the combat run and try and give orders on the fly. Once you get your head around things and have a tweaked out party you might get away with playing combats on slow mode, but for now, the space bar is your friend.
Crowd control is essential. Use your casters to slow, stop, daze, and misdirect enemies so you don't have to fight all of the at once. Look for places like doors that you can use to channel enemies. Use the knockdown ability of fighters to get free strikes in at powerful but suddenly prone enemies.
Buff your party - Use your priest to cast Holy Aura and spells like Bless that make your party much more effective. Sleep in Inns that provide long-lasting buffs that aid combat.
Debuff the enemy - Your casters have useful Area of Effect (AoE) spells that make the enemy weaker or more susceptible to damage. Strip them of Damage Resistance, decrease Might, or, one of my favorites, hit them with Combustible Wounds!
Avoid getting your casters locked in melee. Look for the arrows joining the little circle around the base of your guy to the base of an enemy - that means they're in melee. If so, use something like a knockdown or a spell that breaks the melee and disengage that caster.
Apologies if you're already doing the above, those are just some things I've found that help with combat in the game I thought might be useful to someone.

Being one that really sung the praises of the game, there are encounters early on that are crazy hard. This game doesn't ease into the hard stuff, its going to hit you very soon. I am personally not one overly fond of restarting 1,000 times. I am not either overly fond of games that do not smoothly scale difficulty.
Being a person who thought BG 2 and ToB were the best games ever made, this game is much harder to get into (at least for me). I think the game itself is stunning, but the encounter design (at least early on for a few encounters) is poor. Don't get me wrong, BG2 and ToB had some crazy hard battles, but they were scaled into in such a way you were prepared for most encounters as you progressed. In PoE, be prepared to learn by restarting a bunch of times.
I am going to restart with min/max in mind, but first part of the game is really starting to turn me off. I tend to have a temper and so I steer away from overly frustrating games (life experience kicking in). My experiences with the last few games I have played has been so smooth, its getting hard to justify the frustration in PoE.
I found that you just have to go where the game wants you to go. It's not going to explicitly say "you can't go here yet" but it will beat you up if you don't follow the general path of the story arc and try to go to an area that the main quest storyline isn't nudging you towards.

I actually didn't find the initial combat to be that difficult. I will say that I started as a fighter which is always easier than other wizard or chanter or something. Also set the game to easy for some of the more difficult and counter so I can get through them. I like a challenge but I don't want to have to beat my head against the wall for three hours trying to get past one monster
You know, I don't mind getting my butt kicked, but some games really press my buttons. :tickedoff:

To me, games like this are more enjoyable when played on the 'easy' setting. You get to enjoy the unfolding story (and this one is incredibly deep so far) without the frustration of frequent deaths and reloads. I'm doing it with this game and by building a party with prebuilt npc's and ones I built in the first inn....I'm surviving quite well. Games like this are more about the story and less about the combat....at least to me they are. Others post in these forums who prefer the challenge of the higher difficulty settings and enjoy that experience as much as I enjoy playing on easy. There is no right or wrong way...just have fun.

Excellent point. I'm much more interested in the story of the game than I am min-maxing a set of characters to take the game on at its hardest setting - but there's nothing wrong with it if that's what someone else wants to do. I'm playing on Normal right now, but that's not to say I won't slip down to Easy if the fights are getting in the way of me enjoying the story.
Because this does have a deep and interesting story. Too few RPGs these days scratch that itch for me like BG, BG2, and NWN 2 did. Fortunately Obsidian built a game here that you can have fun with from many different approaches.

Major bug that may affect your game:
A post on Polygon discusses a serious bug in Pillars of Eternity, though visiting the links they provide to the thread about the issue and Obsidian's reply bring up pages saying they are currently experiencing "scheduled downtime," so they may be busy fixing this at this very moment. In any event, here's an outline of the problem so you can avoid falling victim to it:
Pillars of Eternity, the crowdfunded throwback to the great Infinity Engine role-playing games of yesteryear, has a game-breaking bug that developer Obsidian is working to fix. Meantime: Do not double-click items to equip them to your character. Drag them to a slot in the inventory screen.
Double-clicking, for some reason, removes all passive, racial and permanent buffs — forever. While players may reload an old save and proceed just fine, obviously that forsakes any progress between that save and triggering the bug.
The bug is described at length in this thread on Obsidian's official forums. In this reply, an Obsidian developer says that they do have a fix for the bug and that they're "trying to make it retroactive, so it will fix any save games that have this problem."
If the bug strikes party members, removing them from the party and then adding them back seems to fix the problem. Others report that though passive buffs do not show up, they appear to still be present and working.

I just ran into another bug that's pretty irritating. I had a troll knock down one of my characters and he remained in the prone position and wouldn't get up. I couldn't leave the dungeon, camping didn't work, and quitting and reloading didn't help either. I had to revert to a previous save and re-fight the dungeon to recover from the bug.

I agree it would be nice but you do have the easily seen visual of the portrait bar, the yellow one I believe, that goes down as you take damage.
I had one fight where my character was at the edge of the movable area on screen and when attacked by wolves, he would not strike back at all. Maybe not enough room being so close to a rock ledge? Neither could he move at all. Just had to reload after the fall but.... Also an occasional clipping noise during gameplay. Disappears when going to the inventory and other screens but will reoccur when returning to the main screen. If there's an Achilles Heel to this game it maybe the already mentioned non potion use during combat. Some items can only be used during combat but using them seems to take awhile so that you may already be badly hurt before the effects kick in or, sometimes the enemy can "interrupt" your character's action with a hit causing you to fail to complete the action completely. This game's got some tough love.

From what I've read, the ones you find aren't as good as the ones you create.
I wouldn't know personally, because I quit playing until they fix the repeating-sound bug. You can supposedly hotfix it by turning tutorial tips off, but I just started this game, I don't want to turn tutorial tips off. You can also hotfix it by saving and loading, but that takes about a minute and the bug will just come back. It's a nasty bug a lot of people are running into, so hopefully they will get it ironed out soon.
Seems to be just me but so far it hasn't really grabbed me like Divinity original Sin did. Though not played that much..pretty much done everything needed in the first village with the hanging people, though finding one part particularly difficult. Not sure if I need more than three characters to do it or supposed to be higher level. Anyway it's OK but as I said not really wowed me yet.

Too bad about the sound bug....I haven't experienced it. The characters I create do seem better than the pre-made ones you meet along the way...problem is they usually come with a quest that you won't get unless you take them on.
Looks like my game is on hold until the patch now as well.
I'm at a point where I'm facing down a bunch of ogres, druids, and ogre druids and they keep casting insect swarm. There's a bug (no pun intended) with that spell in that it doesn't go away even after combat ends. You just keep getting stung until you die. You can save, back out of the game, and then reload and it clears but the damage persists.
My created Priest was Level 1 but the one I picked-up for free was Level 2. It can't hurt to have 2 Priests. The toughest part so far for me was the destroyed temple in the Hanging Tree city. At first it was tough as leather nipples but slowly progressed until finding the needed items to complete the quest. I didn't need to go into every room and kill every enemy but hate not doing it. I'll have to come back around later and finish it properly. I got the black dog too but he doesn't do anything but follow me around. At least he doesn't bark all the damned time like my dog companion in Skyrim.

I haven't gotten that far into the game yet...it's disappointing to read this, I'm really into this game big time.
Tried to fire up the game a few minutes ago but found it was updating on Steam....the patch notes seem to address many of the issues noted in this thread.
Excellent news! I haven't encountered any troubles so far, but heading them off is welcome.
Most importantly, the new patch apparently finally allows bears to wear hats.
^Exactly what I was waiting for.
Seems to have broken more things that it fixed. I'm now stuck with a permanent -20 concentration penalty to all my party members and I have no idea why.
Keyboard conflicts are still there for lefties who like to remap controls to the number pad.
I don't know if they fixed the insect swarm bug. The druids no longer cast it during combat so maybe their "fix" was to just remove it from the enemy AI's repertoire.

Yeah I had to bypass a few rooms so far because the number of shadows was overwhelming my poor lil' group. I'm going back into it and try to clear it completely. I'm not one of these nancy boys who plays rpgs to by pass the fights with fancy dancy smooth talking.
No. You're one of these nancy boys who plays rpgs to by pass the fights with fancy dancy shmancy smooth talking.
God damn but I just got spanked in a fight. I got a quest to go back to an old area that I cleared out when I was level 4 or so and deal with a new baddie that took over. I'm level 10 now and felt pretty confident about taking this one on. I think I might come back in another 2-3 levels. I've tried this fight 5 times and haven't lasted more than a minute at most and that's with time on slow.
I just ran into the Prone Bug. Went back to clear-out the temple dungeon and after a tough fight my Priestess got knocked down and had only a single HP left and then wouldn't get back up. So I camped, saved, got all her HP back but she still just lay on the floor. When the rest of the party moved off, she followed flat on her back everywhere they went-- behavior I usually don't object to in a female character. Then she froze and wouldn't move at all. So I quit and reloaded the earlier save and she was back on her feet and kind of mouthy about it too. Weird.

This all sounds kind of normal to me, but then again....I've been married for a long time.
Well...the lock pick bug with player made rogues at the inn has been fixed. Moving forward in the game again!

I got past it with
1 level 3 fighter
1 level 3 wizard
1 level 2 priest
1 level 2 ranger
1 level 1 cipher
1 level 1 paladin
I had been trying to play with 4 guys based on some game guide recommendation that you keep your party small because experience gets divided among them.
WEEEELLLLLL, that was before I found out that there is a level cap of 12 and some people are hitting it 2/3 of the way through. So i will play with a party of 6, just like D&D, thank you very much.
I had just added those last 2 before I hit the room full of shades.
Characters do seem to perform better against enemies after your info about them increases. Shadows are level 1 but I couldn't believe that the first time I fought one but before long the groups of 2 and 3 were manageable. Four was still a killer though. And I will only say this once. If you run into a Forest Lurker, RUN like hell.
Played some more and just got my stronghold ..starting to get into it alot more. Still hasn't blown me away but it is enjoyable.
Another update yesterday. I like playing when I don't have time to play something big, just kill some time before and in between life's many requirements. It's a quick fix for my Hack & Slash needs. It's got that, "Look in one more place" appeal.

I'm having a little trouble getting into it, too. Slow-paced, and I need my adrenaline, I'm a 21st century old guy. But I haven't gotten to the stronghold yet, so I'll keep on keeping on at least that long.
Finally got into the lighthouse in the big city and wished I hadn't. Got slaughtered. Some really tough fights in there. Left in the hopes of coming back later at a higher level to finish the quest.
Is it me or are the main quests fights easier than a lot of the side ones?
OK, I don't like the Enchanting. It cost me 600cp to bump my armor up one level to "Fine" even with me already having all the necessary ingredients. Who am I paying the 600 to? Or is Copper Pieces an essential part of improving armor? On the other hand, I have a new favorite weapon, the Arquibuse. It's slow as hell but it hits like a 75mm cannon. And thus my now new favorite tactic... give it to the sneakiest guy and have him back-shoot the enemy for a one-shot kill. Works great on those damned Shadows. Who knew ghosts were so venerable to gunpowder weapons?
I'm fighting what I suspect is the gauntlet leading to the final battle. This is the bit of most RPGs that I dislike. The ridiculous grind leading up to the even more annoying boss fight. Having said that, I've thoroughly enjoyed the game. I doubt I'll play through the entire thing again but I am curious enough that I'll likely make a new character and play to about level 5-6 or so just to see how differently the game plays out with a different class and different choices. I think I'll try out a monk.
I've been enjoying a slow game playing maybe an hour or two every other day or so. The pace is one I find to be nice and relaxing. I've got the combat setup with way too many stops right now, but I'm slowly revising it. By the time I get to the big city I should have my combat stops refined to the point I feel like my tactical decisions actually matter. Without the stops I find it too hectic and with pointless RTS like battle mechanics.

That's exactly what spoiled the end of the first two Dragon Age games for me....haven't gotten that far in Pillars yet.
I LOL'd at Angry Joe's live Twitch recordings in his review. Dude looked like he played it non-stop for days. :crazy2:
;D
Good one nefaro...Angry Joe is certainly entertaining.
I got to the bottom level of Cad Nua and met the big bad baddie down there. Every one of my character is at max level and even on easy I can't last more than a few minutes. Pretty much stopped playing at that point.

Something other than the seemingly obligatory series of increasingly difficult battles (the grind) leading up to the extremely difficult end game boss. It's like there's a rule that all rpg's have to end this way...it's become predictable. Maybe they exist and I just haven't played one. Wouldn't it be interesting to finally encounter the big bad boss only to find that his power decreased all the while you were defeating his minions. The weakened shell of a powerful boss grovels at your feet to spare his life now that you have destroyed his power base. I don't know....anything but the predictable end we always get.

Sounds rather anti-climactic. Maybe not regarding the boss himself, but players realizing they had unknowingly defeated the game before ever reaching the big guy at the end (who just ended up grovelling before them).
Would give a, "that was it?!" ending perhaps.

To each his own. I think it would be quite entertaining to have an unexpected ending with twists and turns leading to a conclusion other than the usual......here we ago again, another big bad boss to kill.
It's a story thing. People, Americans especially, like a happy ending. Good triumphs over evil. The hero gets the girl. Everything is happily ever after. It confuses people when things don't follow the formula. So, if I got to the end of the adventure and found that my actions had caused the bad guy to beg rather than going dying at the end of my sword, I'd feel cheated. But, if you made it clear during the story that the things I was doing would ultimately lead to the villain begging for his life at the end, I'd be satisfied. Matter of expectations.
Oh, and if I was voting, I'd take a different ending than the happy one. As long as it made sense.

I would have no problem if the player ended up finding out that
he was the bad guy at the end or something similarly unusual. Would be a good ending. Just wouldn't want to feel like the game ended before I expected, or inconclusively.
Or to get to that groveling bad guy only to find out he was the good guy and you had been duped! Of course the problem with surprise endings is that there hard to keep a surprise. The first person to get there will be spouting out spoilers left and right.
or walk into the room with the big boss and just fade to black like The Sopranos - then noone knows WTF went on :idiot2:
and the sequel can start with the dust settling, and everyone going 'well, i did not expect that to happen, so....... anyone for a cuppa?'
OR, walk into the room with the big boss and then cut to your tank waking up in bed as if it was all a dream similar to Final Destination, shouting 'guys, guys we cant go on this quest' just before he gets squashed by a falling boulder
I had a dream like that once. Must stop eating cheese sarnies before bed time.
I'm all for the story. I could understand a twist ending with you being revealed as an anti-hero, or the boss being weakened, but I think it'd only work if it were driven by choices during the story. Otherwise I think it'd be just too anti-climatic. Although you could have a boss that had it's powers reduced, but then I'd imagine you'd just supplant the main boss with a series of mini bosses with a net result being the same. I don't know. I guess I like the tactical battles of these types of games that the grind never bothered me, but I can see the point Rayfer.
Dragon Age: Inquisition is very good at giving alternatives to end chapters. Not sure about the ultimate ending to it, or even if there is a traditional ending, but DA:I is unconventional enough that it sometimes feels like a really well-produced fantasy strategy game.
FWIW the end boss fight spoiled the original Dragon Age for me too...I must have attempted it 100 times and looked for solutions in dozens of online places and just couldn't find a solution. So I stopped.

+1 gus....I couldn't beat it either. Gave up trying. Loved the game but not the ending which I never got to see.
It only took me a couple of tries to beat the final boss in DA:O. Not bragging...but maybe I had it on a lower difficulty level? I don't remember, it's been so long since I got that far in the game. Though I really did not like the ending at all.
I think your idea is pretty good, Rayfer.
Planescape Torment had several ways to win against the final boss if I can remember correctly, one of which was the combat option but it was almost impossible to beat him.
I remember a very old rpg called Anvil of Dawn, still available on GOG, that had an interesting and unexpected ending...don't want to post a spoiler here but suffice it to say there were options other than combat with the big bad final boss.

I'm all but certain I got it on the first playthrough. Just by fighting super-cautiously and methodically - pause every 1 second and check what everybody is doing. But I actually thought the end of DA:O was amazing, the best part of the game. [MILD SPOILER -
That part where you come charging into your city, and all your followers are charging in, too, doing their own thing, and you just try to find a way to fight cooperatively. Wow. DA:O isn't my favorite Bioware game, but that may be my favorite fight. - END SPOILER] (And by the way, where's the hide spoiler tag???)
The one in DA:O that got me was the fight where you are at Howe's estate and walk into a room packed full of archers and their boss - Ser Cathrien or something - and chat for a while and then they all let fly. Eventually I figured out that if you just sprint out of the room when the fight starts, duck into the first small room on the left and fight 'em as they come in after you it's still hard as hell but you can win.
Looked it up on the internet, and apparently you are supposed to just give up and let them capture you because it's unwinnable. Ha!
http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/920668-dragon-age-origins/52152984
I'm usually not the guy who can win super-hard fights that other people couldn't, but I had a technique for a tough DA:O fight. Simple technique, really, just frequent pausing and whenever anybody is in trouble, run. It doesn't work against a room full of archers too well, though, because everybody is in trouble all the time.
A fair few films have an ending specifically for the American audience as they don't like unhappy endings as mentioned above. Us Europeans are made of harder emotional stuff and can handle misery rather well:)
LOL - too right. I mean, just look at our government for a start. ;)
I finally went back and killed that damned bear in the cave. He wasn't so tough against a full 6-member party. It felt good to have my foot in his ass instead of the other way around.

I never fought him at all, after reading about him on the forum. That dude said "watch out, there's a wicked bear down that road!" (or whatever), and I said "oh hell naw."

There's a small quest connected to what you find in the cave. Worth a few ExP's.
I see this is on sale at Steam for -60% off.... so, I have had my eye on this for forever, considering the norm (don't have time, have to many games, Steam Summer sale blah blah....)
What is the overall opinion of it? I have been wanting a divergence from the normal games into something more adventurous.
PE
I really like it PE. It's very Baldur's Gate-like but with a very easy UI to use and lots of aids to keep play un-confusing. Story's a little bland and Combat can be confusing until you get used to it. Lots of great loot and quests that are non-linear and optional to the main story. I'm wondering if I should pick-up the White March part 2 for 25% off or wait for a better deal on the Summer Sale?
Mrs.B has been playing the White March pt2 and says its absolutely brilliant.
My only problem with Pillars of Eternity was the sucky and unmemorable magic items. It gave the game good play balance - but lack of fun. I also tend not to like mind games as a plot line. Seeing ghosts was too much mind game for me.
Both parts of the White March should've been released together probably. I hear part 2 is much better than part 1. What does Mrs. Bob say about that Mr. Bob?
Yep, she says its the best bit, no question.
Ask her on Steam. She uses the same name as she does here on grogs ;-)
I thought she said you were the best bit, no question?
Second best, mate. Always have been.
Anyway, you perishin' colonial delinquent. Why aren't you on my Steam friends list?
