Title: Terrorism in Russia
Post by: Centurion40 on December 30, 2013, 10:23:57 AM
Second blast this week.

http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/30/world/europe/russia-volgograd-explosion/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

I worry about the safety of the Olympians.  My heart goes out to the average Russian citizen, the victim of this wave of terrorism.

Saw that.  The Chechens do have a knack for striking while the iron is hot...

Terrible. Christmas is in two weeks over there (for the Old Calendar), and the olympics coming around the corner.

Russia has been battling the Chechens for hundreds of years this is nothing new.
Here's a good Google read about the history of the Chechen/Russian wars.
Tolstoy served in Chechnya with the Russian army.
The insurgency in Chechnya and the North Caucasus.

nope, not at all - as long as you recognize what you sow yourself

The Sovs/Ruskies certainly have sewn their share, but let's face it: radical islamics hate regarless of past history.

If Chechens seeking independence from Russia were attacking Russian government/military targets, that would be one thing. But using suicide bombers to attack civilians on public transportation, THAT is another thing entirely- imho.

In my view these radical islamics are little different than recycled anarchists of a century before.

They would rather spread chaos and destruction than work toward a better situation.

Public outcry at murdering civilians seems to depend on who does the bombing.  Nelson Mandela, Menachem Begin, and Yitzhak Shamir spring to mind as ones who somehow got away with it.

Good point, Silent. History is usually written by the victors.

No different than using airstrikes to terrorize and kill civilians.
Dead is dead.

I'm no fan of Islamic extremism either.
The Russians brought this on themselves though and the Chechens fight with what they have.
The Russian occupation of Chechnya has been very brutal and while I don't condone the Chechen methods of defending themselves I understand why they do it.

They can't possibly hope to win a conventional war against Russia and I think that these bombings are attempts to create world attention to the suffering that the Chechen people(civilians) have endured under Russian occupation.

It's a complex situation. I find it hard to have sympathy for either side based on the tactics they have used  - or are currently using. The Russians have certainly done their share in attacking civilian areas and the rebels lost any inkling of support  I may have had for them when they slaughtered the school children in Beslan. It's bad all the way around.
