Along the lines of bayonetbrant's thread about wargames, here's one that was played on another forum for a long time and then it suddenly went away: Name that wargame map!
I show a small image of a wargame map and everyone tries to guess what game it was from. Ready? Ok. Here we go! The first map, some may recognize the map artist here:
Something about it makes me think SPI......
Yes, it is a Redmond A. Simonsen (SPI) map.
I'll give the year next if this proves too difficult!
The towns and hex-number font clearly mark it as a Simonsen-based map. But without any discernible text on it, it's tough to try to narrow it down beyond that.
It would be one of those "I played on that map!" moments. This particular game wasn't rare but certainly isn't in the top 100 of board war games. It was published in 1979 by SPI.

Dude, I was 7!
Seriously tho... I'll be back with an answer in an hour or so
Looks like a Central Front map. Is it 5th Corps by any chance?
Funny you should say that, I thought it may have been BAOR map from CF.
I went through all the SPI releases tagged with 1979 at the Geek and didn't find a comparable one. I thought it might've been Red Star, White Star, but I didn't find a map tile that matched up with it. And then stuff started melting down at work and I had to pay attention for a while and I'm just now getting back to this thread.
Ok - another hint!
Earlier than Central Front then - Quad game maybe?
Paratrooper or something like that? It had Crete, Eben Emael and I can't recall what else. That looks like the eben emael part of the map.
Pinetree is our first winner! Indeed, that was from Paratroop, 1979. A Jim Dunnigan design.
Pinetree: 1
Our next map sample. I'm going easy on you guys this time! :)
I think the first one is the red devils game from paratroop. I did see the prior post mentioning paratroop so I wuzn't first, but maybe the most accurate!
is the second map a very white looking france 40 AH?

The great Mr. Ellis has joined us! Heya Ken.
Yes, you are correct, the map is indeed France 1940 from Avalon Hill. Jim Dunnigan of AH/SPI fame was the designer per BGG.com. I believe the map was white hexes and Fortress Europa had the beige colored ones, but I may be mistaken.
At any rate, our score is now:
Pinetree: 1
Ken Ellis : 1
This one should be an easy one for the group!
never played it but its gotta be vg vietnam?
sold plenty of em
but then again it could be korean war dittos on vg
and I have seen france 40 have nearly tan maps, almost green, and white and more or less cream will check the geek to see if all these flavors are depicted...nope only the stark white and the early pics on the 4th page show a more cream colored type map
the last I had was sort of a green shaded map, it was a slip version I think, I may have a loose one laying round somewhere
now here is a rare map
its hard to read, and this is probably nearly impossible for anyone to identify
I bought this from dan blum.
it is on the geek, I now own the specific game pictured there!
this is the entire map!
Gary's is a vietnam game. Let me see if I can figure out which one.
...
Font & vegetation pattern seem to match w/ VG's Vietnam
...
Hey look, it's the same map snippet that's over on the 'Geek!

I can't make out the writing when zoomed in - too blurry. I know that
Melee and some other "pocket games" from the 80's had very simple maps like that. This isn't one that I've ever played on though.

I found my copy of
Fortress Europa and it has the tan/beige colored hexes. I haven't had
France 1940 for 25+ years so I honestly can't remember what color the "clear" hexes were.
hmmm.... the game on that tiny tiny map
was designed by neil zimmerer!
and it has a set up hex for a certain roman emperor....
but truly an impossible game I guess
THE IDES OF MARCH printed on one sheet of paper!
reminds me of the original blankity blank which will be posted next ALSO A MAYFAIR GAME!
now this game should be much easier, the first was to establish street cred....
this game published as a freebie, then in retail format is one of the funnest games and NEEDS TO BE REPRINTED as does swashbucker!
a tiny portion of the map should suffice, the room at the upper left corner is the TECH ROOM
y'all gotta start attaching bigger images!
host them at Photobucket or Flickr and link them here...
I like to look at the trivia here not that I know any of the games. However I thought I needed to consider that I may no longer have better than 20/20 vision.
well lets look at a black and white reduction here
whole map
here is the hint that oughta do it!
the only game I know with a : GLOW AND GO phase in the seqence of play
the first best _______ game invented!
click it to enlarge and the area on the map is labelled science building
hee hee!

You should have known better than that!
Here's one. Shouldn't be too hard for the connisseurs out there.

well I aint a conny sewer but its probably afrika the gamers
or dak or tunisia
how many gamers guesses do I get?
one of your answers is correct. :)
I think Ken had it with Afrika - The gamers - it looks very familiar.
Well, it is the Gamers. Another snippet:
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg217.imageshack.us%2Fimg217%2F1272%2Fmappart2.gif&hash=45da2e4319c71f0da128216af397e0a1a2fde7ec)
I'll take a shot: It's either the monster Operational Combat Series game DAK2 or the other OCS game Tunisia.
DAK2 is the winner. :)
There's no mistaking a Dean Essig design. :)
