Title: Space Hulk: Death Angel
Post by: PanzersEast on January 14, 2014, 05:25:06 PM
Finally won my first game last night and all of my Marines survived... before then  I have been slaughtered  and picked off by some mega stacks.

Overall I really enjoy the game and like the mechanics... I just purchased Deathwing and Tyranid expansion, I own mission 1 and marine pack 1 but have not played them as of yet.

Death to Heretics!

It's a fun little game, and all in a box smaller than one of my shoes. Yet every single expansion fits in there, too.

The Tyranid expansion is excellent. Personally, I ignored the rules and just shuffled the whole thing into the standard Tyranid decks. It adds a lot of variety when you suddenly draw a Lictor and a Hormagaunt, rather than more Genestealers.  ;D

Looking forward to the Tyranids..... I am playing the Mission 1 and Marine 1 packs now.  I really enjoy the game a lot and will probably do the same and just mix the cards together for randomness and continue to mix things up.  I was hoping for more expansions, maybe some green skins etc.... but, it looks like it will not happen... Mission Pack 2 or Marine Pack 2 please!

Is this game solitaire?

Yes, it has 1-6 players.  I am writing a review of it but posted an overview on my site.

http://www.linesofcommand.com/?p=58

The PC game is based on this game where you lead a squad of Marines on a derelict space ship and try and recover it.  I now have all of the expansions for the game and I have really enjoyed it.  Get ready though!!! It is tough winning this game and you never now how each game will progress.

During the Fantasy Flight Games Xmas sale, I picked up the Deathwatch WH40K RPG Core rulebook and a couple expansion books with the intention of primarily gaming out space hulk missions with a more detailed & persistent character advancement system.  One of the expansion books has much dedicated to just that.

However, this still entices me.  I do enjoy a card-driven strategy game.  Perhaps I'll see if there are some play vids on the 'Tube.

Edit:  Although it's not WH40k, the Lord of the Rings co-op LCG from FFG also seems to be a pretty popular solitaire-capable card game.  All of the above are 'on my list'.

Space Hulk: Death Angel just arrived in the mail! I didn't think I'd get it until tomorrow. Sweeeeeeeeeet.

I've had my eye on the SH solitaire card game, and the LoTR LCG (with all its various expansions but mostly the two Hobbit ones, since my nieces might be interested in watching me and possibly their Dad get slaughtered ;) ) for a while.

Just how necessary is the core LotRLCG to the two Hobbit expansions anyway? They look from everything I've seen like complete overhauls for the purposes of the story. What's still left from the original set that would be needed?

I've not played it, and am curious about the system too.  Perhaps we should make a new thread on it and ensnare someone who's played it?

For the LCG's, you pretty much have to start with the core box. Then you can pick and choose what you want to add on from there.

You have to have the core to play.  I have it and have enjoyed it quit a bit. The quest get really tough however, but I highly suggest starting out with the core box and playing through that several time before spanning out (Core box is required for all expansions).  There are several expansions you want before others and I have a list somewhere.  I have not purchased any yet as I am still playing the core game.  The core box has some very good cards as well that are included.

This is a great website for looking at cards and seeing what come in which expansion deck http://www.lotrlcg.com/

Since Amazon still has a nice discount going on some Fantasy Flight stuff, I grabbed Space Hulk: Death Angel along with the Tyranid and Mission Pack expansions.  Unfortunately the free shipping from Amazon option wasn't available this time so it's obviously being fulfilled by some brick & mortars.  Still can't complain about $5.60 in shipping I suppose.

After recently getting into another co-op card game, I think this one will fit in nicely too.

Yes, I just picked it up and all its current expansions, too. Got the base game and the first mission pack and first space marine pack (apparently not deathwing yet) yesterday. (Deathwing and Tyrannid packs are coming.)

Read the instructions, seems legit. Shall meander the net looking for "campaign" conversions, or perhaps build my own from the missions if possible. (The Deathwing campaign from the first computer game seems like it would need a few cards from the Tyrannid expansion, if not the Deathwing expansion per se. The implication from the rules, at least from the color text, seems to be that the "Sin of Damnation" campaign missions can be recreated with the core mission cards...?)

Frivolous purchases? I'M SPLURGING FOR THE NIECESSSESSSSSS!!!!

Okay, well, maybe not this one. I'm a terrible person to go shopping, because I start buying and can't stop. :)

Still, while I didn't get this for the nieces (a lot of other stuff came in), I'm adducing some further entertainment imagining how they'd respond to the topic. Pretty sure their parents wouldn't approve, but it would be adorable hearing them go around saying "TAKE AND HOLD" etc.  ;D

For what it's worth, the expansions (if you can find them) tend to be pretty cheap, like a couple of dollars plus a few dollars shipping. (Both my others arrived this morning.)

Buying Tyranids with it wouldn't be a bad move. The other expansions are okay, but that one is the best of the 4 by far.

I almost bought an extra pack or two, but figured some were better than others, and that you guys would probably post something about it eventually.

I recall you (or someone else) mentioning that the Tyranid expansion would be your first choice, followed by the Mission Pack and then the extra Marine packs.

So I managed to hold my frivolity to just adding the Tyranid and Mission Pack.  I mean.. there are more than enough Marines in the stock box for solitaire play.  I was just worried that the stock would run out on this stuff before long. Therefore, along with some sale pricing, it was enough to convince me to get it earlier rather than later.  Don't wanna put it off and then get stuck scrounging for used copies or high priced new ones on Ebay in the future.

It may also inspire me to follow up on my plan for using the 40k Deathwatch RPG system as the basis for creating a continuous series of space hulk gaming using the more detailed RPG for running such a combat oriented campaign (which is about all an RPG about Space Marines could be, methinks).  I was thinking of creating my own random Space Hulk generator system for it at some point.  The RPG rules would just take care of the continuous campaign mechanics, of course.

I have indeed been a frivolous buyer lately, especially when it comes to solitaire capable tabletop games.  But I've not been buying as many PC games since doing so, nor playing as many since I've regained my tabletop itch.  Unfortunately PC games are usually the cheaper vice these days.  ;D

I doubt I'm going to get a chance to try running a SHCard game until Sunday night at the earliest, as I'm off to the nieces this afternoon and probably tomorrow morning, too (and afternoon if I can manage it). Then helping Mom close the business year out on Sunday after church.

Ah, frivolous spending on board games. I know thee well.

Actually, my poison of choice was RPG books. I kept buying the damn things if it was for anything that seemed neat. Sure, 99% of them would never be used, but I'd buy them anyway because...reasons. I seem to have gotten that under control.  ::) :D

LOL!

I briefly started doing that recently, but a couple beastly-large manuals curbed my RPG reading needs fairly quickly.  I doubt they'll ever actually get played much, if at all, but there's a lot of reading to be had.

New Shadowrun 5th Ed, Star Wars Edge of the Empire Corebook, and WH40K Deathwatch on sale.  Those will keep me occupied for the foreseeable future, if I feel the need to study up on an RPG.

I had pretty much every single Deathwatch core book. Finally sold them off recently. A few of us actually DID try playing that, but it's an absolute bear of a game. You don't have a character sheet, you have 2 of them...both double sided. There are just way too many stats and things to track.

I admit having been rather disappointed when I found out that it used the same old d100 style system that the old Warhammer Fantasy did back in the 80s.  While it sounds simple only having to roll percentile dice for most everything, and having stats to reflect that, it has two problems.  First, there are ridiculous amounts of modifiers and every extra character skill/ability/wotnot is just an extra modifier for something.  So it's a damn nightmare to track all the DRMs down in numerous places.  Second, it's just a damn boring dicing system.  Rolling one or two d10s and having to wrangle with all the adjustments sucks some of the fun out of the dicing part.

It's nice to see that Fantasy Flight's newest Warhammer Fantasy RPG system uses a special dice pool (as does their Star Wars one).  Despite having to buy their special dice, it gives more life to the dicing side of the game.  Having learned the Star Wars dice pool mechanics, I've been impressed with how easy it is to enact modifiers (add or remove dice to the roll), it incorporates opposed tests into the exact same roll, and the dice results can even lend more inspiration to the narrative since it has extra degrees of positive and negative outcomes possible.  So I've become a big fan of dice pool mechanics in general, if only for the ease of adding and removing dice for modifier purposes.  Screw having to go down DRM lists and search character abilities to add and subtract for every roll.  I'm over that.  :D   I think the DRM-heavy system of these 40K RPGs will be the thing that keeps me from playing.  Still.. there's a lot of interesting reading and lore in them so I'm not planning on ditching the stuff at the moment.  It may still inspire me to write up some randomized Space Hulk building rules to play solo.  Then you don't have to worry about wasting other people's time on DRMs.

^Yep, I hear ya on that. I think that's part of the reason I've been so impressed with Savage Worlds whenever we run a campaign using that system. Everything is so clean and streamlined. Your character sheet is just that...one sheet. Everything you need is there. Sure, you need to detail what your Hindrances and Edges do, but that's typical of any RPG system. Also, the fact that character building actively encourages you to take Hindrances (Nerfs to your character, basically), because only by taking a few of those do you get points for Edges (Buffs), is a lot of fun.

I got Space Hulk and Mission Pack 1 in yesterday.

Played solo this afternoon using the Librarian, Assault Bolter, and Power Sword teams.  I had picked them randomly.  Turns out I got all the more ranged-oriented ones and none of the beefier short-ranged teams.

I had been doing pretty good until the next to last location in the space hulk, where I lost a couple of my basic Brothers.  I actually started off in the final (victory) location with no genestealers the first round and I got pretty cocky.  After issuing Move and Support orders to prepare for this final showdown, a nasty spawn followed by a nastier Event next turn that splooged out a massive amount of genestealers AND some were spawned behind every one of my space marines.  Oh the humanity!

In the end, it was down to my single Librarian with 3 genestealers on his backside and 6 in the direction he was facing.  Luckily I had managed to place 1 Activation token on the location's Control Panel and rolled exactly a one to win the game at the very last do-or-die roll of the last turn!  I almost jumped when I rolled that lucky shit.  Talk about hairy!

;D

Just got the Tyranid Pack in about an hour ago.  Hrmm..

Between this and Marvel Legendary, I'll have plenty of solo card gaming to do.

There's a pretty good chance I'll get to see Bro and the nieces this weekend for a few days -- not the best game for the girls, of course, and I'd rather Bro look at the LotR/Hobbit 1 LCG instead since the girls might take better to that (though they're still a little young to play it).

Still, I unpacked all my decks last week when they came in, and was happy with them. :)

I dunno.. Space Hulk Death Angel didn't strike me as a good multiplayer card game.  There are probably plenty more that have better group mechanics.  But the solitaire game I played the other day was nail-bitingly brutal and came right down to the wire.  :D

I'd suggest giving it the one-player treatment the first time.

Yeah, it's a really good solo game, but a fairly lackluster one for multiple players. There are far too many superior co-op games out there to really recommend Death Angel for that type of game experience.

I've been on a solo game kick lately, and this was one of the top solo games as voted on at BGG:

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/200265/2015-peoples-choice-top-100-solo-games?titlesonly=1

Note that the list is in reverse order, so the #1 rated solo game (Mage Knight) is #100 in the list.

I picked up Death Angel recently, and have had a blast with it after reading the rules and watching some youtube videos.    Last night I made it to the last location with 5 of 6 marines still alive, and thought I was home free.   The location card said that whenever I activated the Control Panel, I had to make a choice:   add 1 token to the location, or roll a die.  If the die was < the number of tokens, my Space Marines win.  Otherwise I have to keep going.

So the trick is to get enough tokens to have a reasonable shot of winning before getting overwhelmed.   I got 2 tokens on it, and was doing ok... but then things went nuts, and by the time I got the 3rd (for a 50/50 shot), I was in trouble - 3 marines left and too many Genestealers.   On the next round, I was pretty sure I had to try to escape the ship or be overwhelmed.   I cringed, rolled the die, and couldn't bring myself to look... when I did, I saw a magical zero!!!   Just for kicks I decided to see if my remaining 3 marines could last through the round.   They couldn't... not even close.    I love this game... So much tension and theme.

Note:  This last second win took some of the frustration out of rolling 5 straight misses for attacks, which is part of the reason things got so desperate.
Title: Re: Space Hulk: Death Angel
Post by: Nefaro on February 09, 2016, 05:56:56 PM
It's very die roll dependent.

Not necessarily a bad thing by itself but I recall you're only rolling one die (?) much of the time.  So there can be stretches of good or bad rolls.  The game is pretty punishing, which is good for solitaire/co-op.
Title: Re: Space Hulk: Death Angel

It is a brutal but very enjoyable game for me.  Wild swings with the die rolls, but there are some tactics involved and special abilities.... I love killing the Heretics, but they are relentless.... Recommended by me.

I like that it takes up less space than most of my games.  Could probably even play it on something the size of a large End Table.  Hotel room mobility.
