havent read that much about them yet, but theyre been mysterious about them at the moment
Im happy to say that looking at my steam account and from what i already know, Paradox could be my favourite dev now they seem to have their release s*** together
I wouldn't mind seeing their Rome game getting another chance based on CK2 and EU4 system.....
Armstrong is an interesting choice for a project code name. Lots of speculation about a space game at the link but I wonder if they are over looking another Armstrong- George Armstrong Custer. Mayhaps it will be a game about 'manifest destiny' including the Indian Wars.
I would love to see a Civilization type game from Paradox. Start in the stone age, go to the space age, random maps, etc.
Not only that, I wouldn't mind them finally setting up a game spanning the so-called Dark Age period between the fall of Rome, or even as per Great Invasions starting with the final big pre-fall schism in the mid 300s, and going up to CK2. I like GI but it's clunky as hell and desperately needs a stable upgrade and a sane game redesign. Not that I don't understand the rationale for why the designer did what he did in the first place, porting his board game to a EU-ish kind of engine; the original EU engine wouldn't have handled the but obviously CK's general game design would eliminate that problem.
Armstrong I suppose would be Vicky3 with an obscure reference to Custer. It doesn't seem likely they'd be jumping on the Race to Space-type bandwagon. (But not impossible, they do a lot of things aside from Clausewitz.)

You guys are missing the obvious reference. It could be a bike racing game! Or maybe drug dealing.
Yeah, I decided not to go there. :D
I'd like to see Rome 2 revisited and updated, but I might be one the only people who actually think Rome is their best EU game.

Nero sounds like a dungeon/fantasy-type game. Armstrong...not sure, ships and rockets could be maybe
WWII or (III?) lots of conflicts actually ::).
Either way, I think I'd be more interested in Armstrong...
Yep, me too, depending on what it is....not much into the fantasy stuff myself.

Nope, I love Rome EU also.
It wasn't better than CK2 or EU4 but it was damn good with the expansion
For Nero there are 2 screenshots but so anonymous you wouldnt know anything more - there is a mountain scene and a forest scene both in very wintery conditions
There is some speculation that they have decided to go professional on the mod for Game of Thrones but im sure we'd have read about the tie in by now
Was hoping Project nero turns out to be EU: Rome 2 with the EUIV engine. Would save me the trouble of having to make an EUIV mod covering the same thing myself ;) but based on the hints that seems unlikely.

+1
Purleeeaassee!!
Surely Nero has to be the EU: Rome 2, no matter what the hints given have been so far. It's been long enough since it came out, and given how well Paradox has done with CK2 and EU4, I have to believe they would do justice to a Rome sequel.
Armstrong, I'd dare not guess yet.
Hhhmmm, probably not EU: Rome 2. Just in browsing through the Project Nero thread, I've seen multiple posters quoting/paraphrasing previous Johan posts (and tweets) that EU: Rome 2 would eventually get a sequel, just not now.

Yeah, my impression from frequenting the P'dox forums a while back was that a Rome EU sequel was very definitely *not* on the horizon any time soon. But it's been a few months since I checked in over there.
...will they just put me out of my misery and announce HOI4 already ??

I suppose if you enjoy CK2 and feel like playing in a fictitious world instead of a historical one?
I'm not sure how much prior knowledge is required to pick up on the event messages and such. It's still a feudalist situation so the core gameplay is still the same, I'm sure.
I've not checked it out since the original CK version because the new one has had so much DLC to keep me busy.

Johan's clues are pretty esoteric, but haven't seen anything yet that rules out Project Armstrong as HoI4 (Nero clearly can't be).
I find it hard to believe that HoI4 would not be Pdox's next big project. All the stars are aligned in that direction.
From back in my SAT days (long, long ago), I infer the following analogy:
Arm : Heart as Strong : Iron

I certainly wouldn't bet against it....seems to have been always their main product and I am sure all the WW2 fanatics would be all over it. We'll see in a few days:) The bigger question......how far away do we think either will be actually released...this year? That will be even more torture knowing something is coming and still a long ways off.

Wonder if Nero is going to have movement similar to the campaign map in the total war series.
Since neither is likely to be EU Rome 2 I hope one of them turns out to be a space 4x with the clauszwitz engine.
So... were Roman provinces called something else, and they're trolling the fans by going this route? (Fire and darkness could be references to Nero's fire on one hand and the start of the Dark Ages on the other.)
I have a hard time believing they're going to just skip Vicky3 instead of bringing it up to par, but then it's been a while since HOI3.
the rise and fall of the forums mood with these hints is great - yayyy, boooo, yayyyyy, boooooo
im thinking HOI4 and something else - god knows what - space does not fit in with the released shots of nero so far, whereas armstrong says rockets, ships and deept tech trees - still HOI 4 for me
Most likely HOI4, since I just purchased the complete HOI3 collection at Christmas and started playing it. :P

I don't think Pdox has any intention of skipping Vicky 3 -- pretty sure Johan confirmed there will be a Vicky 3 sequel at some point. But I have less and less doubt that HoI4 will come first. Esp. with this latest clue about 'deep technology trees.'
Of course, I'd be perfectly happy if it is Vicky 3, which HoI4 only slightly beats out in my book --

::) Yes, but notice I included Rome explanations of the hints (up through hint 4, which is topically neutral unless it's referring to a discussion or statement made years ago by the devs on what the engine couldn't do.)
Hint 1: "There will be fire & darkness" -- Nero was strongly suspected of having set fire to Rome; the Dark Ages popularly tend to begin with the fall of Rome in the 400s.
Hint 2: "Is this a troll attempt?" -- Yes and no; yes they're trolling the fans by suggesting there will be trolls, no there will be no trolls -- unless "troll" refers to Germanic myths of the barbarians in the game.
Hint 3: "There are no provinces in this game." -- Because they're using some period-appropriate term for the little counties or whatever.
Didn't see that before my last post.

Still topically neutral: a Rome game could switch to no province divisions just as easily as a high fantasy game. (Although that would apparently desynch from leading into Crusader King eventually.)
They're obviously partnering with a Japanese developer to create a dating sim set in the Roman empire.

I'd like to see Vicky 3 before HoI. Then again, I'm still in a 7 year long "I don't want to replay WW2 again" mood. But I'd love to see Vicky 3 with the EUIV engine and EUIV style streamlining. Even after playing a combined 300+ hours of CK2 and EUIV, I still open Vicky 2 stare at the screen for a few minutes then close it.
same with PrON - i stare at it, it stares at me - switch off again
Even with Paradox' newfound quality improvements on release, I just don't expect any future HOI to be in good condition. Mixed with my apathy towards yet more WW2 games, I'd say just about anything except a new HOI would be good news to me.
Could there be a "rocket" in WW1? ??? That's the only way I could see Vicky 3 coming from those hints. (But IIRC one of the devs said V3 was on the board but not yet, so it can't be V3 anyway.)
If the second game is a "sequel", then timewise it can only be HOI4 (oh yay, it'll be good in about three years ::) ) or they're actually going to make a direct COLD WAR SEQUEL to HoI3.
I could easily see them trying that. The politics involved would kind-of fit their new CK-inspired revisions, and fans have been asking for something official for years.
If it's Crusader Kings: Twilight Struggle, I'm 100% on board, even if it's a buggy mess. But they've been working hard to get high-quality releases recently, so I feel cautiously optimistic.
theres supposed to be East v West but the only rumours ive read from a disgruntled few are that its slowly going down the pan and will get wound up
if it doesnt then theres already a cold war HOI3 in the pipes

Are they making a DLC that will link all their Clausewitz games now? Not just CK2 and EU4?
In that case, I do hope it's a
Rome 2 and/or something that will proceed further into the 'dark ages'. In order to do the post-western Roman period in Europe, they'd have to focus less on national borders and more on ruling the shifting cultures, tribes, etc. Hrmm.. would be a tough thing to do.

i think its just the general 'we want new shinys' people who are disappointed - my only thoughts are, how many different ways can you do the game
Re: HoI4, I just don't see how it could be improved significantly enough to warrant a new one yet. Vicky3 obviously could use a CK-makeover. Not sure that would parse right in WW2 times.
Re: Nero and Armstrong, any new hints today yet? How often do those come around?
Re: CK DLC, if it turns out to be (more) Dark Ages backplotting, that would be great -- the Old Gods already goes back to 867 (which I had forgotten because I don't think I have that DLC yet, and haven't even gotten around to playing CK2 yet) -- but it would still have to be a massive DLC to go back another four hundredish years (at least) in order to link up nicely with "Nero" being Roman Empire up to the fall of Rome. Although I supposed "Nero" could have DLC planned to cover any remaining gap forward (up to the rise of Islam for example, if the new CK DLC goes back to that point).
That being said, if it isn't more Dark Age backlinking (say to the rise of Islam), I don't know what it would be. The Mongols were already introduced (as was the essentially viking kingdom of the Rus) and while technically there was more land in Asia to consider, the Urals make a reasonable limit to that, so why exactly bother? Same for sub-saharan Africa -- it just wasn't much of an issue historically during this time period in relation to Europe, the Med, western Asia, and the Persian Gulf regions, partly because it was too inconvenient to get there.
(Before anyone asks, the main reason I haven't played CK2, aside from having other stuff already, is romantic: I know how much the woman I might have married would have adored this game, and I know she did eventually like it when her husband finally got her into it, so while I'm technically happy for them I'm naturally sad by association. :( I realize this is an irrational reaction, but I can't quite get over it yet.)
Re: EU4 hint, seems like a lock for East India Company (and various notions associated with that).

"Armstrong" is indeed... HOI 4
https://twitter.com/PdxInteractive
www.runemastergame.com
Not much there yet, other than an announcement trailer.
hmmmmm.............
i see now the reason for the massive whisper campaign - to drum up pre-announcement excitement before the meh real life announcement
HOI4 im excited about but the trailer might as well be the ad campaign for the History channel - no gameplay, unless there isnt any yet
The RPG, not my thing, my best wishes for all its success but im not that bothered
I suppose you play HOI, CKII and EU and get caught in the map and gameplay theyve created - i think everyone was looking for a fantasy CKII/EU or at least something grand strategy
The HoI4 announcement trailer is indeed lame and pointless. Need to see some game screenies!
It will be interesting to see if it's EU IV with a HOI skin tacked onto it. I wonder what new systems are being brought to the table.

Yeah, don't care about graphics at this point, HOI3 was good enough. What serious game upgrades will there be? (And why "Armstrong"? ??? Why the apparent mid-Cold War era references?)
Runemaster, okay, nothing against it in itself. Trolling the fans with "nero" though is evil. >:( Instead of being curious in the actual product, I feel nothing but disappointment that we won't be getting an official EU(4):Rome after all. At least HOI4 has an established fanbase who will rejoice despite the lack of a new Cold War Clausewitz engine game. If I was the lead designer on Runemaster, I'd be a bit pissed at having my shiny new IP undermined like that.

ha, yeah - they knew exactly what they were doing with the 'Nero' tag - im surprised there hasnt been more rage over there, all though old timers were quick to point out that the project name has never referred to the contents of the game

hmmmmm.............
i see now the reason for the massive whisper campaign - to drum up pre-announcement excitement before the meh real life announcement
My thoughts exactly, I'm somewhat less than excited by what has been announced.
Though I might still pick them up when they reach the inevitable 75% off 3-6 months after release if they prove to be any good.

They do have a point. Just because the code name was Nero doesn't mean it corresponds with the actual game theme.
Re: Runemaster - They had me at Vikings and norse mythology.
Re: HoI 4 - Yawn. WW2, been there, done that. I can understand Paradox wanting to keep refreshing their four flagship titles. Considering Vicky 2 got a major expansion a few months back it made it unlikely it was going to get a sequel this soon. Might pick it one up on sale but I doubt it will see much play time. The time period doesn't hold my interest any longer.

Wow couldn't disagree more. I love HoI3 to death but it is flawed in many ways. Pdox has still never gotten naval or air combat right, for example. And I for one really want to see them expand and refine the army AI control features -- integrating the "battle planner" so that it could actually be used to plot and implement operations, rather than be pure window dressing.
With HoI3 going on 6 years old now, it is the right time for a re-boot.

Six years!? Where has the time gone! Three years passed between HoI1 and HoI2 and four years passed between HoI2 and HoI3. I've been playing the
Hearts of Iron series (http://www.mobygames.com/game-group/hearts-of-iron-series) for nearly twelve years! I hope
Hearts of Iron IV implements the best of all the previous versions.
Definitely interested to see where Runequest goes. Not an HoI fan, but it's a big announcement for fans of the series.
As for all the 'the whole point of this campaign was to drum up interest', well...no sh*t. That's the point of every preview and pre-order campaign ever. I really don't get why it would be disappointing or anything of that nature.

Yep, and I remember the frustration and gnashing of teeth (which I fully participated in) for months after the initial release like it was yesterday.
Since it seems HOI4 won't come out til Q2 2015 or so, yeah, it will have been a long time between HoI installments --

I suppose you play HOI, CKII and EU and get caught in the map and gameplay theyve created - i think everyone was looking for a fantasy CKII/EU or at least something grand strategy
I wasn't looking forward to fantasy or something odd using the system.
However I haven't found myself looking forward to any WW2 game in a long time. The glut of them over the decades did me in. Unlike a large chunk of war & strategy gamers, I never had an overwhelming need to have that first and foremost before all else. When I see people popping into message forums for other games set in the Classical or World War One era, and their first request is a WW2 version, I have no words to describe my epic facepalm. So I just accuse them all of being Third Reich fanboys. :P
As for the HOI series, I've never owned one that worked well. After buying the first HOI, I haven't expected them to. After CK2, I knew they could create a good EU4 perhaps with some others, and they did well on two thus far. But I'd still be surprised if they can pull off an HOI4 of the previous version's scope without it ending up nearly as messy on release. Even now that they have their pre-release testing working so well.
Hell... did HOI3 ever get to the point where the AI could use it's troops adequately? Even after the four expansions or so?
Nope. Not fantasy. I was looking for
anything besides world war two. I guess that's still the crowd pleaser whether it works well out of the gate or no. ;) ;D

Nefaro, I agree 100%. I was on the receiving end of some very vitriolic posts (not offensive just intense I guess) when I posted just that over in the Flashpoint Campaign forums. Someone suggest after the game had been out a week that the developers should really work on a WW2 version. I posted that there are plenty of operational WW2 games and can the rest of us please enjoy a few non-ww2 game for a while. Man, people were upset although a few agreed.
I was accused of hating WW2 games and told that if I don't like them, don't buy them. True...of course my point was that it is obnoxious when 1 day after AGEOD civil war 2 is released, someone posts a thread asking them to make a WW2 version. Jesus H.
HOI 4 is a bit confusing...aren't they releasing the Cold War version of HOI 3 in a few months? Why immediately start on a new version of the same game of it is going to have a Cold War theme.
At any rate, the "east v west" HOI3 game is the game I am most looking forward to this year. I always thought that a WWIII game with then HOI engine was begging to be done. Hated to get in the way of a scarce WW2 strategy game though

Damn straight. I would've backed you up had I seen the usual requests for a WW2 version. It happens in nearly every game's forum that
isn't set in Dubya'2.
It really makes me wonder if such thinking has been drilled into gamers heads for so long as being
the bestest war that they will ever want when it comes to their hobby. Like mice trained to ring a buzzer for cheese? Creepy, no? I mean.. it has certainly had the lion's share of the focus in the hobby since it's inception, right?
Anyway.. yeah, I'm obviously tiring of it more as time goes on. I thought a long hiatus from them would help but it hasn't. I don't really miss it. Quite liberating, actually. I'm free to wander the rest of history!!!! :P

I believe the
East vs West thing is dev'd by a third party. That hasn't always gone so well in the past. Hopefully all turns out okay.
Nef and Mikeck, I agree with you that there are plenty of WW2 titles out there and that it is ridiculous for folks to want to transform games set in other eras into WW2 titles. Still, the implication that those of us who enjoy WW2 strategy are somehow programmed labmice or closet nazis is just a little unfair, no?
Well it's an insta-buy for me. I am dying for a game where I can conduct global WW3 with nukes and such.
There are several threads over at the matrix "command/modern naval air combat" forum expressing heartfelt desire that the devs will release a WWII version. Again, yes, that would be a great game
But there are so few games dealing in modern operational warfare that I would hate for them to produce more WW2 games. Maybe it's selfish.
I can't get a proper game of "age of rifles", "30 years war", "European wars of the 18th century"(Spanish succession Austrian succession, etc) Crimean conflict, or really any tactical /operation warge
Taking place between 1500 and 1800 with the narrow exception of AGEOD RISE OF PRUSSIA.
Yet I get a new WW2 game every month. I get that WW2 sells...so when someone does take a
Risk and produces a non WW2 game, it should be celebrated, not used as a time to convince the developer to do WW2.....rant over

Yes, it is unfair....but accurate! Lol.
No, seriously, like I said, I don't blame people for loving WW2 and wanting to game the crap out of it, it's just when every game has to become a ww2 game.
It's not as big of a problem as I am making it here, it's just a pet peeve of mine

No question 8)
But I certainly understand your & Mike's frustration with people wanting non-WW2 games modified to WW2. I'm guilty of being a WW2 glutton who is intrigued by pretty much any WW2 game, but I will be the first to admit there are too many games set in this era.
And let's state the obvious...WW2 sells for several reasons...everyone's country was invves and it was the last big war where the sides were evenly matched

I wonder if they'll hire the fans who worked on the various HOI2 remakes, to help make HOI4 better.

I'd be surprised if they did. It sounds like things are not going well with the "East vs. West" project which (I believe?) is being headed up by the modders who created HoI2 Darkest Hour (or maybe Arsenal of Democracy). And recalling the Magna Mundi EUIII fiasco, I'd bet that Pdox Development Studios is probably feeling a little "proprietary" about its flagship state-of-the-art-Clausewitz-engine games right now, e.g. CK2, EUIV, and HOI4.
Anyway, the Pdox HoI4 forum is just a morass of acrimony and childishness right now, which frankly is nothing new. Whenever I come back to Grogheads it's nice to be reminded of what a (relatively) sane, intelligent and mature community of gamers looks like :)

You mean Dubya'Dubya' 2.
Hadn't heard confirmation yet on the CK2/EU4 DLCs, thanks!
EU4 is not surprising (they were heavily hinting the East India Company); and while I'm personally a bit disappointed there wasn't more Dark Ages backfilling, the India expansion for CK2 makes a ton of sense (and meshes with the EU4 expansion, too!) They were an ancient and developed civilization in actual significant contact with at least some of the CK2 civs. China might be overreaching during this period but hey they were in contact with India directly and other SEAsia civs in between, and indirectly with European/Med/PersGulf nations; so if a further push was sent that way later to bring CK2 more up to EU4's scope I wouldn't be surprised. (Kind of along the lines of the Strength And Honor game series.)

The Paradox Interactive Forums has the announcement from Paradox COO Susana Meza Graham that they have decided to "freeze" development of Runemaster, expressing regrets over the decision concerning this "very ambitious" role-playing game (thanks Gamer's Hell via rpg codex). Here's word:
I have some news to share with you today regarding Runemaster. After much internal debate we have made the decision to freeze development of the project until further notice and move the development team working on it to other projects within Paradox Development Studio.
This was not an easy decision to make - Runemaster was a very ambitious project for us, and the team working on it brought all of their passion, dedication, and talent to the table. Despite our best efforts and a couple of re-scopes, Runemaster in its current form was unable to live up to the standards we set for ourselves here at Paradox.
Runemaster was a different type of game for us, and even though we were not able to fully realize our vision for it, we will take the lessons we learned to heart as we move forward with new endeavors. We will also look into how we can re-use the best parts of the game in other ways.
Our aim is to let all the talented developers who worked on the project to remain with Paradox Development Studio and bring their expertise to the other great games currently in development.

Interesting. At least they know when to call it off.
I was confused by that title anyway. Wasn't really sure what it was trying to do, from the info we had. ???
Very surprising. From the looks of it, Runemaster was Johan's baby -- he seemed to be the project's frontman, and seemed really enthused about it, much more so than about Pdoxs more run if the mill projects like HOI4. I can only imagine the internal strife the decision to cancel mustve caused.
Ah well -- let Pdox put all its eggs into the basket of producing a first rate HOI4 then...
Bummer, Cyrano was prety high on it after GenCon

blimey, i thought that was quite far down the line too - cant say im affected much, it wasnt for me and i wonder if marketing have realised this was too far from the pdx tree for most fans
As someone who is not a huge fantasy fan, I was pretty ambivalent about Runemaster, but in all likelihood I would've bought it, had it panned out. I did think it was cool and a good sign that Pdox was branching out, doing a project not based on the venerable Clausewitz engine. But i think Undercovergeek is probably right -- Runemaster seems to have been just too radical a departure.
It could have brought in a ton of new fans who have never purchased a Paradox title. I was looking forward to seeing what they would do with something outside their comfort zone.
