Title: Supreme Ruler 1936
Post by: Jarhead0331 on February 08, 2014, 04:44:02 PM
Did anyone know this is available on Steam for early access? I knew it was being developed, but had totally forgotten about it. Serendipity brought me to the early access page. I always thought the other titles in the series had a lot of potential, but always missed the mark for one reason or another.  I'm just wondering if there is any reason to take the plunge and learn it, over say, finally figuring my way around HOI-3?

Anyone have this by any chance?

Supreme Ruler 1936 looks a lot like Hearts of Iron III to me. Especially since I always play the HoI3 1936 Campaign. Although I am curious about SR1936 I refuse to pay $29.99 to be a beta tester.

Didn't know this was out for early access already.  Although personally I wanted to like the past versions of this game series, but could never get into it and control all the things it required.  Therefore, I will be sitting this one out since I doubt enough has changed and typically this is one of those game series where the price rapidly seems to drop after release anyway.

I wish they would make a World War Two version of this!

Oh.  Wait..

:P

If you want to micromanage World War II at the battalion level- go for it!

They had a good idea years ago when the game engine mostly dealt with smaller forces. The game design/engine can handle small countries well, but quickly gets out of scale controlling world powers. Over the years they have tried to overcome this by making the AI control your forces, but the AI is sketchy. Also, the naval model is thin and logistics isn't well modeled.

The developers need to redesign the engine and unit scale, but have been incredibly stubborn over the years. This is one game series that I wanted to evolve in a positive direction, but they have doubled down on poor design decisions each time.

I was making an attempt at humor there, since I always complain about people asking for "a WW2 version of this game".  As if there aren't enough.

But, yes, I agree with you on the runaway military unit scale.  It's quite ungainly and despite normally enjoying non-WW2 strategy titles I've never been able to get into the previous ones very far without it getting painfully unwieldy.  Ditto the game mechanics evolution.

Have anyone tried it yet?

I have all their other games but never really gotten into them so not really sure I want to buy another...

If you did not like the others, I wouldn't waste your time with this one. It plays very much alike. In fact, apparently you can use tutorial videos from the other titles to learn the basics of the new game.

I've decided to buy Supreme Ruler 1936 as soon as the non-Steam version (http://www.octopusoverlords.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=88096&p=2114934#p2114934) is available.

LOL! I have some reservations about Steam, but there are benefits too, particularly things like autopatching, the workshop, and the community. It's not all bad by a long shot. On the flip side check out the Tagés DRM system usedd by Ubisoft if you want a real shocker - permanent broadband link etc.... :o

I suspect it's one of those games that I'll keep looking at because I like the idea and it was exactly the sort of thing I would've dove right into 15 years ago.  Now I'm old and addled and don't have the patience to spend time learning these games (I've tried and failed to learn Supreme Commander: Cold War) so I just end up flipping through the sub menus, harrumphing in disapproval and then booting up some eye-candy instead.

Based on my experience with SR2020, I cannot put my head around the unit management.  It's a mess.

That was the problem I was having as well.  Once a hot war started, there were so many units on screen I couldn't keep track of what was going on.

The problem is, you're not really supposed to directly control your units on the map, so when you try to do this, the game starts to fight you and its a fight that you will always lose.  Rather, you're supposed to set goals and objectives and then pray the AI uses the proper force balance to achieve those goals. I found that the actions of the AI were never particularly coordinated or logical in a true strategic or tactical sense.

I checked their forums and read that air units use carriers as landing points but the AI doesn't launch operations from them. Also, stuff like Germany sending reinforcements to France via sea transport and the Royal Navy massacres them. This, combined with the same GUI as the previous releases makes it a non-starter for me.

The makers of SR 1936 have a long history of making poor design decisions and not addressing them in subsequent patches, expansions, and new projects. If you buy this game you will be disappointed, because ultimately the game is poorly designed. If you are going to attempt to simulate WWII at the battalion level, you better damn well have a solid, solid design and a super-solid AI. It has neither.

If you are disappointed with the game, know that you are not the first. SR 2010, 2020, and Cold War all suffered from the same fatal flaws in basic design. People want to believe its a cool game, but it eventually beats you down in to hating it. I make it my personal mission to warn people.

You're welcome!

Although I do urge people to follow the link to their forums and decide for themselves.

The devs themselves point out the game's various flaws in posts, so at least they are open and transparent about it.

It has been my experience that developers who radically change the mechanics of a game franchise suffer the wrath of the community.  Each title in the series offers a number of new features to the engine while improving on the performance and the AI.  The most notable feature additions in this version is the Weather system and the Objectives system.

Thanks!  We will be working on a non-steam version shortly.  No precise timeline yet.

Re; Unit management - We continue to work to improve the unit management in game and will give this some attention in future updates.  One change that was made in this version that doesn't sound like it would have much impact was a brand new unit HUD however the way it offers visuals of force distribution at high zoom is actually quite helpful to analyze your forces.

This is incorrect.  In the Defense minister panel you can chose from 5 levels of AI control (full to none) for each of the Land/Air/Sea branches.  I often play with Air initiative at least half way so that the transport planes will resupply land units without my involvement.  If I'm using air for a specific task, I use the Rules of Engagement to lock those air units I'm using.

If there are any specific questions, please let me know.

Missed that this thread had gotten to two pages so didn't respond to everything on my first try...

While we know that the game isn't perfect, we are more than certain that we offer value for the money.  We have plenty of satisfied customers.

Thanks for the information, Chris. I always really appreciate it when a developer engages in the discussion of the game. I may give this a look, now.

Him talking about it unfortunately won't make the game any better. The games in the series conceptually come so close to being great, but in failing seem to fall down very hard. I own them all, and have been disappointed repeatedly.

But yes, its great to have you Chris and I hope some of the players around here will provide you with useful feedback.

Feedback is always welcome, sorry to hear the game didn't meet your expectations.  I hope that the experience lasted long enough for you to feel you got your money's worth, even if it didn't stay on your play list.

Cheers.

You don't have to apologize.  Like you said, you can't meet the expectations of all customers.

Its still on my hard drive and I do not regret the purchase. I just think there are superior grand strategy games out there.
