It's made of honey, and tastes as you'd expect: like honey wine. As with wine, every make is a bit different. Some are sweeter, others more dry and heavier.
Unless you're referring to a specific bottle that was produced in the medieval period. :P The process probably isn't any different, though.

i would say a really strong dessert wine, you can definitely taste the honey in it
Last night there were 2 - a very yellowy/amber one, and a dark orange one that was made with matured nectar (!) - that tasted like diesel

Mead can be pretty cool stuff. I've made a few batches back when I had the time and room to brew beer. In it's simplest form it is indeed just honey, water, and yeast (with some yeast nutrients usually added as well) and can be either sweet (less alcohol, more leftover honey) or dry (higher alcohol by volume, less remaining honey and sometimes very little residual honey taste). It can also be sparkling like champagne or still like wine depending on how long it fermented and how it was bottled. The basic strong mead is often referred to as 'Sack Mead' as opposed to meads that have extra ingredients such as fruit juices (generally referred to as Melomel but specifically also: apple: cyser, grape:pyment), malt and/or hops (Braggot), spices (Metheglin), and dozens more. I once brewed up a nice batch of Dry Raspberry mead that made a great gift for some friends (it was very mild) and also brewed up a batch of sack mead that was so strong (and a bit harsh) I labeled it "Old Hairshirt Mead" when I racked (bottled) it. One 22 oz bottle of that stuff was enough to make you throw your car keys on the roof to fetch the next day...

Actually, I've no idea. I'm pretty sure there's been plenty of mixing it up to make that distinction less noticeable, but as for origin, no idea. The Latin alphabet, though, is not so much Slavic, but what that means as far as bloodlines go, I never got that deep into linguistic histories. But that's pretty interesting stuff to learn about.

Mostly Balt going back to the pre-slavic inhabitants of the area, with a bit of the other two mixed in. No doubt there is probably a strong Scandinavian element as well.

Yes, you absolutely can. Just head to a well-stocked liquor store, typically one that also carries some wines.
There are numerous companies who make mead here in the states, plus you can often find some imports too. There is one or two British ones that are pretty dry and heavy. I think a bottle usually runs me between $12 and $20 a bottle here in KC. Good for getting your initial beer buzz to another level if you have a couple glasses later on, too.
Some come with a spice pack and instructions on how to 'Mull' it (aka heat it up) if that's something you wanna try. I just dunk it straight and cold.
From what I understand, Mead was drank in more northern latitudes long ago because grains were more precious due to shorter seasons and more limited farmland. So they more often used bee honey to make liquor.
Alright, I'm going to look into this and get back to you. There's a nice liquor store pretty close to my house.

Dunno how friendly they are at yours but ask them which is the light & sweet one and which is the heavier dry one. They should know if they've been running the place for awhile, if only from others telling them. I'd recommend trying one of each but, as I said, I prefer the less 'foofoo' heavier stuff, in case you only get one.
