Title: Advanced Squad Leader
Post by: DV8 on April 03, 2012, 05:33:46 PM
Does anyone have any experience with ASL?

Thoughts on the game?

That's a pretty open question... open to starting wars!  ;D

I started with Squad Leader, then added all the expansions and had lots of fun playing the game.

I bought, and still have, the ASL Rulebook, Beyond Valour and Paratrooper when it first came out. Never could bring myself to play as there were too many new ways of doing the same things. More and more and more rules... and no fun.... for me.
So I gave up.
I still have it all but it's not played now as I play LnL's Band of Heroes series. Way easier and more fun.

Easier you say.  I like the sound of that.  :D

Now I need to find people that play it. Have you tried it on Vassal?

Yes.

Thoughts on the game?

ASL is ASL and there's a reason that it's the benchmark for all WWII squad level tactical board games (and the desire of many to replicate on the PC).  Those that don't know it say "oh, the learning curve and 300 pages of rules" but if they say that then they don't ASL.  You can read 12 pages of infantry only rules and play dozens of scenarios.  You just add new equipment according to different scenarios that you want to play (Machineguns, flamethrowers, etc).

Rarity in finding some core modules has always been an issue but Multiman Publishing is doing a better than average job of keeping stuff in stock.  You can get the 2nd ed. rulebook and the first module (Beyond Valor) from their site now (or cheaper if you shop around).

Even better now is the ASL Starter Kits.  $20 gets you the first kit (which is all infantry) and 6 or 8 scenarios that can be played several times (I've played them a dozen times each I would figure).  They have SK's 1, 2 and 3.  2 adds Guns, 3 Tanks.  You don't have to buy them in order nor do you have to own one to buy the other.  The SK's have enough rules to get you playing and then you can decide if you want to jump to full ASL.

I taught my 12 yr old how to play SK 1 in about 30 minutes.  We've played about 4 times and he's learning more and more stuff with each new scenario.

And wait!  IF you order now, you get even more ASL goodness!  You can now play it online.  VASL/VASSAL allows you to play via email (yes, via email) or live online with people from around the world (there's a lobby).  And it's newbie friendly.  That's how I got back into it after a decade layoff.  Vets LOVE to teach newbies because it keeps it alive and adds to the opponent pool.  I NEVER had someone say "you dumbass, go read the rules again!" or anything even remotely close to that.

So plop down $20 on SK1, start to get the mechanics down.  Install VASL and start meeting people online.  Explain that ASL is new to you and you will start enjoying some ASL goodness in no time.

OK.  Here's a question.  I looked at the reprint of the ASL rulebook, but how do you get the map and counters?

I only got as far as the ASL starter kit #1 which has US and German infantry units and map. Nos #2 and #3 add crewed guns and vehicles, respectively.

FWIW it looks like starter kit 1 is out of print at mmp and special order from nws online.

That BGG.com link has a link to a reputable online store that has SK1 in stock for $19.99.

A question was asked about if you get the ASL Rulebook, how do you get the maps and counters?

Well first, you have to decide if you're going to jump into full ASL at this point or start by checking out the starter kits (and remember, you don't have to go with SK1- they all have the rules from the previous kits and they all have at least one or two infantry only scenarios).

IF you opt to go straight to full ASL, then you need the Rulebook and you must buy the first core module, Beyond Valor.  That has the maps, rules and scenarios covering the Germans (with some Russians thrown in).

You're looking at $150+ if you go that route.

The Starter Kits are a much more appealing option to a new player in my opinion and it's what they were created for.  $20 gets you a very good feel for what ASL is basically like an if you like it, then jump to full ASL and if not, you're out $20.

After I pulled my head out of my 4th point of contact I realized that the full ASL starter kit is the rulebook plus Beyond Valor.

I have played ASL years ago.  My brother bought a ASL box set, which to my memory had rule book, paper maps and counters.  I'm sure my memory is fuzzy though.

I'll check out the link at BGG.  Thanks.

I guess the question is either go with LnL Band of Heroes and ASL starter set.  It sounds like ASL has a larger following and more complexity in the long run (which is not a bad thing).  It seems like BoH has a faster learn curve and LnL has better support.

I have a few starter games around here, including some Lock n Load games. Let's try to sync up next week and I'll bring some into the shop for you to look at.the one I don't have is ASL.

What do you mean by "LnL has better support"? MMP has been supporting the ASL line for years. They reprint stuff... eventually. LnL's reprint rate is about the same.

Don't get me wrong, ASL is probably a great game and with the start kits maybe as easy to learn as Band of Heroes. I came back to tactical board gaming after a long break and when I found Band of Heroes and saw how it looked and played I didn't want to go back and relearn Squad Leader/ASL. Band of Heroes plays fast and easy and creates great naratives... gives kind of a war movie feel to gaming.

Band of Heroes plays a little differently than ASL too.
In ASL one side moves and shoots all his pieces thenthe other does the same. There is interaction during this as the non-moving player gets to defensive fire at the mover.

In BoH each side moves/fires one unit or stack of units, then the other player moves/fires a unit/stack. When your opponent is moving you also get a change to op fire. This goes back and forth until all units have acted or the players have passed in three consecutive impulses.

Both games are great at what they do. It just depends on what you are looking for.

I have SL and played it with a local wargaming buddy  :)
...at that time i always longed for a computerized version (the collection of actual wargames do the trick ....more or less), which would provides a decent AI opponent and no need of driving to other places and solving the saving a game until the next WE problem too.

on ASL starter kits,
when you are new: get the The Advanced Squad Leader Starter Kit Expansion Pack #1 (2011 release)
it has:  2 Infantry only (new Starter Kit 1) scenarios,
2 Infantry and Guns (new Starter Kit 2) scenarios,
4 scenarios with Tanks (new to Starter Kit 3) of which 2 have tanks on one side only.

its stand alone
you then have most rules and can check - step by step - into the more detailed settings all with one ASL kit.
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgameexpansion/58601/advanced-squad-leader-starter-kit-expansion-pack-1

you may also want to take a look at the Conflict of Heroes series
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/24800/conflict-of-heroes-awakening-the-bear-russia-1941
which has a very nice SL / ASL  taste rubbed into it

( the good news a computerised version of CoH is also on the horizon, will get realeased by Matrix / Slitherine soon
http://www.matrixgames.com/products/424/details/Conflict.of.Heroes;.Awakening.the.Bear!
SL/ASL/CoH-vets will play it with the counters of course! ...the 3d models are just for the 'mass-appeal' ;) )

+1

Speaking for myself, after taking a break from ASL for a number of years, I found the Starter Kits were a great way to re-introduce myself to the system.

I went with the The Advanced Squad Leader Starter Kit Expansion Pack #1.  It got really good reviews on boardgamegeek.com and ASL seems like the most popular of the bunch.  I'm sure the other games are outstanding but finding people to play with was a big driver for me.

Thanks for everyone's feedback.  Much appreciated!

Good for you DV8!  Let us know when you're ready to play via VASL.  You know, we should organize a VASL meetup on VASL with us ASL playing Grogheads. I wouldn't mind sitting in helping new players- like I said, I taught my 12 yr old in about 30 mins an I recently taught a former co-worker via VASL and Skype just 2 weekends ago.

I'm down with that.  There are 2 things I must do first.

1. Learn ASL
2. Learn VASSAL

Easy! ;)

Here's some more resources for you-

The Joys of VASL Pbem:  http://www.garykrockover.com/vassal/The_Joys_of_VASL_PBEM.pdf

I HATE to refer to somebody else's forum, but Gamesquad is probably THE place for chatting about ASL/VASL: http://forums.gamesquad.com/forumdisplay.php?30-Advanced-Squad-Leader

How To VASL: This is taken from an email that I wrote to someone explaining step by step how to get VASL up and going.  It's long winded but it hand holds you all the way:  http://www.garykrockover.com/vassal/How_To_VASL.pdf

And be sure to start browsing over Jay Richardson's ASL SK Tutorial pdf that I linked to above.  That also hand holds you threw learning ASL. It may be overkill in fact (over thinking it) but it's very detailed.  I'd just browse it casually and not try to learn every single thing in there.  The rules from the Starter Kits aren't terribly difficult.

Oh, and there's a VASL Facebook group:  http://www.facebook.com/groups/vaslmeetup/

And a Facebook group for ASL: http://www.facebook.com/groups/2741475028/

Haha.  This is funny that you mention these sites Gary.  I spent the better part of 3 hours browsing the gamesquad forums ASL forum last night.  (Scott, the GameSquad overlord is a member here too.)  So much information, so much passion for the game at that sub-forum.

Also imagine my surprise as I was browsing the Getting Started guide at Vassal and low and behold the chap doing the walkthough used GJK for a player name.  Now it did take me about 15 minutes to associate that to here.  Nice guide by the way.

Here's a collection of ASL Starter Kit primer videos that I've been watching on youtube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFk01JboIhk

It really gives a good insight into the gameplay and what it looks like when it's laid out with map and counters.

I also now realize that I might need to order a pair of medical tweezers too.  Yikes!  Who knew getting back into boardgames was so complicated!

I think I forgot to mention that I picked up ASL Starter Kit #1 Expansion Pack yesterday too.  I really wanted to go with the original starter kit #1, but the cheapest I could find it for was $55 + shipping.

As for ASL, well I think I'm done with it. If you know anyone who wants my stuff, I'll let it go for a reasonable price. Only thing is Beyond Valour and Paratrooper and mixed together so must go together.

LOL, yes was April 2010 when we met for TS. I agree that it doesn't seem that long ago. And yes, lets try to do it again soon. Will PM you my contact info. I see we connected through BGG the last time, which also works.

I have a buddy in Ottawa who is a big fan of ASLSKs. I've been trying to convince him to invest in the full game little success. Lack of funds likely being a major factor. I'll check see if he has any interest and put him in touch with you if so.

I used this to setup VASL.  I imported some boards just to check it out and it works like a charm.  Not that it makes any sense to me, but it's all still very cool.

GJK: One question I went to this http://vasl.org/scenarios.htm for the scenarios, but the link leads to a dead site.  Where are the scenarios hosted?
Title: Re: Advanced Squad Leader

Scenario files are being phased out because of too many mistakes, so most people are just pulling the counters and setting up from scratch these days.

Well, then.  It seems I have a lot to learn about setting up a VASL game in my future.

Are there counters that need to be downloaded or or they already a part of the VASL download?

I think I answered my own question on this one.  Found the counter tab and put some chits on the board.
Title: Re: Advanced Squad Leader
Post by: GJK on April 05, 2012, 08:59:59 PM
What we should do is try to find a Saturday morning or night and have as many people meet up on VASL as want to join.  There was someone from the gamesquad forums that was holding regular VASL-newbie meetups and quite a few people got involved.  I joined on one session and matched up with a new player and we went through a couple of turns of a scenario.

Once you get VASSAL and VASL installed (to avoid the confusion, VASL or "virtual ASL" is just a module that loads under VASSAL) and you launch the VASL module, you see the welcome screen with three options: 1. Start a new game offline, 2. Look for a game online, 3. Load a saved game.  Those are fairly self-explanatory.  Go to option 2 and you'll be in the main lobby where other players are.

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.garykrockover.com%2Fvassal%2FVASL_Network.jpg&hash=7786bbfe1e57e8410d72d7ec054c7a4e6dd4c5ed)

You'll see "rooms" (folder icons) where people are playing.  Double click to enter the room (if it isn't locked).  Here, I joined the room that they've entitled "Hill 621" (which was a popular SL scenario that has been converted):

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.garykrockover.com%2Fvassal%2FVASL_Network2.jpg&hash=649d88049a3553bbc323212dbbd6f5ce96db694d)

If you right click on a players name that is in the game and "synchronize", VASL will load the map and pieces and you'll be watching their game - including what is being echoed to the chat window (piece movement, their text chats if they aren't on microphones).

Note that it's common courtesy to ask if it's ok to sync unless the room title says "ok to sync".  Just join the room and then type into the chat window "ok to sync?".  99% of the time you'll get a "sure".

The third option on the "welcome" screen (load saved game) would be the option that you would choose when you had just gotten a log from your opponent or you are loading a saved game.

By the way - found a copy of the original VASL sites scenarios here:

http://www.chad-libra.lunarpages.com/~vasl002/scenarios.htm

Edit: appears that those download links are dead as well.

Short answer is, everybody pretty much just uses the actual scenario card from the game and pulls out the appropriate pieces.  You can make your own scenario set up files too if you want - just pull all the pieces and organize it all pretty and then save the game.  Name it something distinctive to that scenario and voila!, you have a scenario set up file for future use (just don't overwrite it with a new game - give it a different name when you save it again).

Send a Skype request some time before and then we can coordinate meeting on VASL.

OK, lets shoot for 8.  I have not played a game yet but have read the rules and watched a few videos.  I think I got the Vassal thing down but I'm not sure.  So I'm ready, what map would you like me to download?

The maps section should have a zip that has all of the SK boards, so just grab that and unzip it to your /VASL/boards/ directory.

We had a good time meeting up on Skype and VASSAL tonight. DV8 had the basics down fairly solidly so it was real easy to jump into a scenario and start applying what he's read in the rules.  We had a couple of other folks join us and so we were all conferences in together on Skype and it went very smoothly.  I'd be up for more sessions next weekend with anybody that wants to join in.  Maybe we could eventually get a little league going with some round robin tournament at some point.

GJK,

Thanks for the tutorial!  You are an outstanding teacher of the game.  I would definitely have interest in another session and a tourny down the road.

Do you know of a way to purchase just the starter scenarios?

Outside of purchasing the full SK, no- you can't purchase just the scenarios unfortunately.

The one that we started (S46) looked pretty interesting.  I wouldn't mind trying that with all the scenario special rules (SSR's) intact.  There were lots of Ruskies coming your way but it was a long way across that map with your MMG guarding the fire lanes.  Key would be to take that guy out obviously but your elite squads had some good inherent range and firepower too.

I'll shoot you an email tonight when I get home with some more info that you might find useful.

 necro thread resurrect time!

I got my ASL cherry popped last night and I loved it! It didn't hurt, honest! ;)

I recently bought Starter Kit 1 and 3.
I've hooked up with an excellent teacher via GJK. Thanks for that!

I think I've been bitten by the bug, because I have a hard time thinking about anything else than ASL at the moment!

I also have 1 and 3 and just got Decision at Elst (https://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/149620/advanced-squad-leader-starter-kit-historical-modul) a couple of days ago. It has a built in campaign based on a historically accurate 22" by 34" map that looks awesome. You track how much the Brits have captured between each scenario and each side can spend points periodically to reinforce their troops.

I'd challenge one of you to a campaign but I think I read somewhere that the map isn't yet available on Vassal.  :-\

Just set up the table for some ASL tomorrow.

The scenario has the Japanese counter attacking the US at Clark Field in the Philippines in '45 with tanks and armed with machine guns salvaged from destroyed aircraft around the airfield. Also several demo charges to add some bang to the inevitable banzai attacks. Played it once before but didn't quite finish it before we knocked off at 3:30am, and was too close to call. Can't wait to revisit.

Yes, Pat is teaching me. Very friendly guy!

When I ordered the two SK's, my wife put in a present for me in the form of Decision at Elst too. Its still wrapped in plastic for now though.

I can't wait until SK2 and SK expansion is available again. Getting the whole SK set has the added benefit of also getting all the counters previously available in Yanks and Paratrooper, according to Pat Ireland. Those two boxes aren't available anymore at this point.
So the whole SK set effectively gives you the American Army OOB.

I have contacted MMP and they expect a new run available some time during spring or summer.

And to round off my ASL experience, there also happens to live a guy a few streets from me to play face to face against! :smitten:

Rekim: looks like that is going to be a fun session!

My understanding is that you don't need Sk2. Each one supersedes those from before. I know that DaE is standalone with all the rules and counters necessary to play.

Of course SK2 probably has map boards and scenarios lacked by the others. We're mostly completionists in this hobby, of course!

Uber is correct, each is a stand alone product.  If you have SK3, or even better, Elst, then you have the rules that come with SK2 already ("Gunz!").  The scenarios are in my ebook of the SK rules but you are missing the maps that comes with it (and probably some counters not covered by Elst or the other kits).  "88's at Zon" was a fun scenario as I recall and so yeah, you'll want to get a copy of it once it's back in print (it's in the queue to be added to the pre-order list).

Lol. That should keep you busy for a few months....punching the counters that is.

Have you worked out a plan for storage/organizing? I find that every time I add a new core module I have to re-jig the old system to accommodate the new gear. Can be a real challenge. Perhaps punching multiples at the same time will be easier  :D

Lol!
I was advised to coat the counters with a matte varnish making the whole punching process even more time consuming!

At the moment I am using a screws tray to sort the counters, but I know it will soon have to be upgraded. ;)
Title: Re: Advanced Squad Leader
Post by: GJK on February 22, 2015, 08:50:35 PM
I use alligator clips that I have attached to some wire hangers that I hang the counters sheets up with (careful of course to not alligator clip an actual counter).  I then use Krylon clear matte finish and spray the front and back of the sheets at the same time.  Be sure to keep 6" or so away and to not spray in one spot for more than a fraction of a second so that it doesn't glob up.  They will be completely dry in an hour or so.

For storage, I'm using the Plano 23701-00 Stowaway box, which is shallow and easier to get the counters out from each storage bin.  I have a picture on this site somewhere, but I glue rubber shelf liner cut to fit the inside of the lid as well.  With the "pro latch" and that rubber liner under the lid, I can literally toss the thing down the stairs with no worries of it opening up nor of counters creeping in to other compartments.  Amazon.com has those containers for $8 ea.  I get mine at Academy sporting goods store.

I'm finding that I too am having to reorganize my kit as each of the major nationalities take up a full Plano now just for the infantry.  The armor are in their own separate Plano's now as well. It would of been much easier to of had all the modules that I have now at once to do it all at the same time but with the knowledge that I have now, I'll save you the grief and suggest that you don't put Italians with the Germans (for example) because you will run out of space.
Title: Re: Advanced Squad Leader
Post by: GJK on February 22, 2015, 09:00:41 PM
Yeah, here was the picture that I posted some time ago in a thread about counter storage.  This is a Plano 3701 I believe, which is also a shallow container model but without the "pro latch" (it latches securely as well).  You can see the black rubber shelf liner that I glue (spray glue) to the inside of the lid to keep counters from "creeping" over the walls in to adjacent compartments.  This was my Allied Starter Kit box before I got Elst which caused to have to completely reorganize everything.  Oh, and I also use super glue to glue each compartment seperator in place so that they don't come out when removing counters.  So with all that, plus the clipping- my "prep" time for a game is quite significant but it's rather enjoyable.

Great input, thanks GJK.  O0
Plano is pretty hard to find here. Currently I am using a similar system which houses 3 trays in a trunk-like construction. I think this will be enough for the SK material.
Once I open BV and the other modules I will need to look at a bigger and more efficient way to house my counters. Especially once I am going to have to transport them to an opponent.

Great tip, that label maker machine! Ordered one for myself too. Tape, batteries and the machine ended up around 45 euros.

BTW I noticed on your picture that all your counters have 'rounded' edges. Did you cut them all individually? My counters came out of their sprues square shaped...

Uh oh....lol!  You are entering the hotly debated "counter clipping zone".  To clip or not to clip, that is the question!

You are correct, the counters are square once removed from the sprue.  Somewhere in the recent past decided that the square nubby corners were not only unattractive but also they seemed to grab other counters when you tried to negotiate stacking in tight hexes that were full of counters.  So their answer was to nip the corners.  Initially people used scissors and then toenail clippers and then someone made this jig called the "C4 counter clipper" and the results were ok at best to the absolute disfigurement of the counter.  The problem was, you couldn't be consistent with the clipping and so you'd get some pretty ugly looking results.

Then somebody discovered a "corner rounding" tool made by a company called Oregon Laminations.  This was a tool made to round the corners on plastic, metal, thin strips of wood.  They posted about it on BGG and that thread is now up to 86 pages of praise for the thing.  The OL company rep happens to be a gamer too and saw the thread and so the company started to work with wargamers.  They developed a 2mm and 3mm version of the clipper in the original design (those are what I have) but some people were getting an occasional "miscut" so the OL company came up with a corner rounder that was made for the wargamer really:

And I just happened to notice a company in France that is selling these in Europe:

http://www.hexasim.com/776-Pince-a-clipper-2mm-Corner-Cutter.html (http://www.hexasim.com/776-Pince-a-clipper-2mm-Corner-Cutter.html)
(I don't work for OL, just love their product)

For counter storage, many of the ASL players in Europe use the Raaco storage units and every time one of you chaps brings your stuff over here, it makes all the American ASL players jealous for some reason.  I've never seen the Raaco's but I hear that they are some very high quality storage units and that they work great for ASL.  Here's a thread talking about how they use them and what their storage suggestions are:

http://forums.gamesquad.com/showthread.php?79813-ASL-Raaco-Counter-Storage (http://forums.gamesquad.com/showthread.php?79813-ASL-Raaco-Counter-Storage)

So this ASL thread has almost covered everything that somebody needs to know about ASL (including VASL) except for how to actually play the game.  lol!

You are a neverending resource, GJK!  :smitten:

That clipper seems like the most nerdy thing ever. And the video you linked proved it! I don't think I've ever seen someone talk for 10 minutes about 2 or 3 mm radius clipping before. :) But.. of course, I ordered the clipper! (The 2mm variant, cause I like the roundedness) Thanks for the link!

As for Raaco; it seems to be readily available from various sellers here. Much better stocked than plano. I'll have to keep that in mind once my collection grows and once I will be taking my counters on the move.

The 2mm is a good size.  You don't want 3mm on the 1/2" counters - they come out as little circles.

And yes, it is about the most nerdiest thing invented for gaming since polyhedral dice.   ???

GAH! Don't mutilate yer poor defenceless counters! They were meant to be square! It's the same a unneeded circumcisions!   :tickedoff:

I use a rotary cutter and a straight edge to remove all counters from the sprues. this ensures they are clean and retain their true square shape.

Since last time I have now found two (!) face to face opponents living just a mile away.
We had a session planned for tomorrow night, but work got in the way so we moved it to next week.

I have a solid grip on SK Infantry rules now. Special Weapons are pretty normal to play too, but I haven't played any guns or vehicles yet.

My collection now consists of SK1, 3 and Decision at Elst. Beyond Valor and the 2nd Ed. Rulebook. Just a few days ago I found a mint copy of Valor of the Guards for a decent price, so I guess my jump into full ASL has been secured once I am ready.

Still trying to find a copy of SK2, SK Exp 1 and SK Bonus pack. But I believe SK2 is due for a reprint this year.

Totally in love with ASL thanks to GJK's pointers to get me started!
Pat Ireland has been a great help as well. We try to meet weekly for ASLSK instruction.

I have every intention of progressing towards full ASL, but Pat keeps his feet squarely on the brake.
We will first run through ASLSK and then 'graduate'  to full ASL later on.
I did take a look at the training chapter in the rulebook, but it mentions Paratrooper -a module I do not own-.
Perhaps the needed counters are also found inside one of the SK boxes? Haven't checked yet.

I think that I may already have pdf's of the scenarios for Paratrooper but if not I could scan them.  You could at least play it via VASL.  You may have all the units that it would take to play the scenarios but you wouldn't have board 24 that it came with if you were wanting to set it up on your table.

By the way, here's some very well done powerpoint presentations for full ASL instruction in 12 lessons:

For me, the three biggest reasons of why I prefer board(war)gaming over computer(war)gaming are:
1. Game prep.  I thoroughly enjoy coating, cutting, clipping and storing counters.  I enjoy using a label maker to ID each of the holding boxes on the Plano storage boxes.  I enjoy laminating charts and maps (where possible).  I enjoy designing for print add-ons be it reference materials, new counters or new/different maps.
2. Face-to-face human interaction.  Not everybody has this opportunity but I'm very fortunate to live in an area that has both a very active ASL community, an active wargaming community and an active miniatures community (as well as a VERY active non-wargaming boardgame community). If you haven't had the availability of finding a local opponent you're missing out on one of the greatest strengths of the game.
3. The 'tactile' sensations during a game - handling counters, dice, charts and actually doing all the calculations yourself instead of being at the mercy of the computer program.
Glad that MMP *finally* got SK2 back in print.  The SK's should *never* be allowed to go OOP in my opinion but that's what happens with a small company I suppose.
Title: Re: Advanced Squad Leader

I agree on all accounts!

I've found two players in my town for ASL. One is a fanatic collector and player, the other a little less fanatic.
It's a very different Dynamic playing them versus someone on VASL.
I do like the administrative help of VASL during play though.

Since I started playing last year I now own SK 1-3 (still missing the Exp. pack and Bonus pack), BV 3rd, FKaC, Last Hurrah, Rising Sun, Hakkaa Paalle and few WO packs.

The SK's and BV have been clipped and stored so far.

The big dilemma is how to organise the vehicles; I currently use the tab system found on several places online, which organises on year.
But it makes fetching the counters pretty hard from my Raaco setup.
My F2F opponent organises on movement points, but thats not ideal either.

What do you guys do?

I don't play for long periods, and then get out my ASL starter kits, I havnt even punched My ASL modules, I want to look at them every so often, I use the starter kits and I setup a board choos my infantry and MGs and storm a location with my infantry, I can play armor I just never get round to it , its mainly small infantry battles, I love the setup its like being a kid and setting up your soldiers. I love that you can setup anyway you want, and the small boards means it can be setup anywhere those boards are a design dream. Its great where you don't need electrical computers etc.. to play ASL . when Iy finaly clicked how to play ASL all other boardgames became interesting, I like solo play though.

Ive got 1st and 2nd edition Rulebooks the first is in a great box I wished they would have done the box for 2nd ed, I also have SL but never played yet.

When ever I get ASL out I can get lost in the massive hobby it is , and I normaly consider ASL as a full time hobby, its terrible some people don't ever know this game exists.

TotH is ok, its sad you don't get to see the charts and results on the tables, it could have been the perfect game, it feels like ASL but after a while it gets tedius without all the info available. so back to ASL

I store mine by the Gun caliber since that number is the largest on the counter and stands out.  So for the Germans, I'll have 3 storage areas that store the "88", the "88L" and then the "88LL".  So far, they all fit nicely when divided that way *except* for the German 75L.  For those, I divide them between StuG and non-StuG (so I'll have two containers for the 75L's).  Americans, British, Russians all work ok with this system as well (for me).

Jealous of your RAACO storage - I've seen guys with them at the local tournament...very nice.  I haven't checked in some time but I wonder if there is a U.S. distributor for them now?

TotH is ok, its sad you don't get to see the charts and results on the tables, it could have been the perfect game, it feels like ASL but after a while it gets tedius without all the info available. so back to ASL

I haven't looked at TotH for a little while now, mainly because of that very thing.  That and it lacks even some of the most basic of items that even the Starter Kits use (ex: smoke/Smoke).  It's a start but it has a long ways to go, YOUR interfaces are more user friendly than that COMMERCIAL product.  My guess on the idea to go commercial with that game: Matrix wanted to judge the reaction (ooooohhhh, ASL on the computer- mad gamer rush!......or not) and then see how hard they'd want to pursue licensing of the actual product.  I don't think they got the response that they would need in order to justify whatever the costs would be to be able to have it licensed as an "official ASL" product (and thus could unhide the charts and guts of the program) so it'll just remain as is I would guess.

I have not tried the bot, I feel I have a good method for solo, decide on 4-5 courses of action score each one on a portian of 100 then roll 2 10 sided dice to decide action to take, it works for me and is very simple.

The big dilemma is how to organise the vehicles; I currently use the tab system found on several places online, which organises on year.
But it makes fetching the counters pretty hard from my Raaco setup.
My F2F opponent organises on movement points, but thats not ideal either.

What do you guys do?

+1 on gun caliber storage

It's a very different Dynamic playing them versus someone on VASL.

I have a couple of local opponents that I play with regularly. About a year ago we switched from playing 90% of our games FtF & 10% VASL to now playing 90% VASL and only 10% FtF. With this change the amount of ASL in my diet has increased 300-400%. It's so convenient we frequently play on week nights now as well.

Personally, I do not find there is much difference when it comes to interacting with my opponents using VASL/Skype versus FtF. In terms of interacting with the map/counters the CTRL-LeftClick feature which focuses your opponents attention on a specific map hex is a big part of why it works so well IMHO. The only real shame is leaving all those nicely punched and sorted counters on the shelf.

So you don't mind vehicle types getting mixed in the same compartment then as long as the gun calibre is the same?

On gameplay I am beginning to have a good grasp of Infantry rules with full ASL now. Next match it going to feature Guns as the next step up, just like ASLSK does. Should be fun. Playing over VASL is cool, but nothing beats the fun of playing against a human opponent at the table indeed. Very glad I found someone in my neighbourhood.  O0

Weird.. I would swear it showed my message before.  :-\

Anyway, I asked wether storing the counters per gun calibre doesn't make it difficult to find a specific type of vehicle or gun. Some sizes were used on quite a few different counters?

Also, I am finished clipping my Russian comrades. German infantry is done as well, vehicles and guns are in progress.
Yanks 2nd Edition just arrived, so those counters will get the varnish treatment soon.

I just started soloing ASLSK scenario 1, the one that's purely infantry without even any support weapons. Gary, I think that you and I Vassaled this one a couple of years ago.

Questions to follow.

3. The 'tactile' sensations during a game - handling counters, dice, charts and actually doing all the calculations yourself instead of being at the mercy of the computer program.

For me, having to learn and mentally apply the rules to the game board and pieces, more fully engages my brain than computer gaming.  I love both computer and board games. but the level of engagement is so different.

:-[ Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that the questions would be coming right away.

Question 1: Whether one of your units moves or not during the Movement Phase has no bearing on it's capabilities for the rest of your turn. IOW, it can move in the Move Phase, fire in the Advancing Fire Phase and then move (1 hex) in the Advance Phase. True or false?

In a closely related question, when your unit fires in the Prep Fire Phase, it can't move in the Move Phase or fire in the Advancing Fire Phase, but can still move (1 hex) in the Advance Phase. Correct?

I'm used to playing Lock 'n Load, which is like an extremely simplified version of ASL. I'm surprised that LnL never got sued. The rules draw heavily on ASL and some of the leaders even have the same names! Anyway, LnL has colored some of my expectations where unit capability limits are concerned.

Answer 1: True. A unit that moves in the Movement Phase is capable of firing in the Advancing Fire Phase (although, at half firepower). Units can move 1 hex in the Advance Phase regardless of whether they moved/fired in previous phases.

Answer 2: True

Yeah - I tried to learn the LnL rules for "Day of Heroes" when it first came out and my thoughts at the time were "this is a poorly written poor man's ASL!".  That was before David took over there and I understand that the rules now are much cleaner now.

As Rekim indicates, you're correct on your rules interpretations.  I'll note one caveat however:  in full ASL, a unit can declare "Opportunity Fire" during the PFPh and then fire at full FP in the AFPh (by not actually firing in the PFPh nor moving in the MPh).  Again though, that's full ASL and not in the SK's (I don't think??).

So when playing, you have to decide on a case by case basis: "will this unit be firing this turn or moving?".  Yes, you can move and then fire Area Fire but the core question stands; move or fire.  If you're on the offense (the attacker), you can sub-divide that by "how many turns of movement will I need to reach the objective area?".  If you have a turn or two to spare, you can think about prepping with that guy once or twice, otherwise, you'll want to get moving.

Ken Dunn (of MMP) wrote a nice article entitled "If I'm rolling, I'm losing" to further clarify this example.  I've faithfully recreated this article and posted without permission so shhhh, don't tell anybody:  http://garykrockover.com/ASL/ (http://garykrockover.com/ASL/)

Yes, that is one complication I have found.  Also, sometimes I forget the caliber and have to look it up, or hunt and peck.  But I really was not happy with alternatives.  Such as by chassis: all PzIIIs, all PzIIs, etc. For me that method did not seem to be as efficient in using my limited storage cells.  So while not perfect, gun caliber works for me.

I'm not sure what this means. Isn't Opportunity Fire what a defender does when his units fire at moving attacker units in the Move Phase? No one is moving during the Prep Fire Phase.
Title: Re: Advanced Squad Leader
Post by: Rekim on November 10, 2016, 07:30:24 AM
Opportunity Fire is specific to the Attacker. Not certain, but don't believe it is included in SK rules. The way is works is; an attacking infantry unit which is marked with an Op Fire counter in the Prep Fire phase is capable of firing in the Advancing Fire Phase without suffering the 1/2 firepower penalty (aka Area Fire). A unit marked for Op Fire does not get to fire in Prep Fire phase, or more during Movement phase.

The various forms of Defensive Fire are:
-First Fire
-Subsequent First Fire
-Final Fire
-Final Protective Fire

I see. I checked the index of my full ASL rules and they use the term "Opportunity Fire" which generally means something else in other games, and mark it with a "Bounding Fire" marker (for further confusion!)

I like that rule. I think it may be the first ASL rule I try to add to SK's as I transition to the full game. Well, that and Bypass, and Snipers, and ..., and ...  :P

Gary, I printed up the Vierville article and I'm using it as a guide to the scenario. Very helpful!

I'm guessing that would be a "no".  :'(

If playing isn't an option, how about 5 minutes on Vassal to get a Routing question answered? (Gary, or any experienced player) I've gotten myself into an interesting situation in my solo game that I'm not sure about. A brief enlightenment would be very educational. (using Vassal would allow me to easily demonstrate the problem)

Am doing my setup for a Ftf game of FB scenario #12 in the morning. It's a meeting engagement in downtown Budapest with a novel twist; both players write down their setup in advance and place forces simultaneously. Also...random roll to determine which side goes first  :)) The attacker needs to control 5 of 8 VP hexes at the end.

That's a nice way to get unpredictable results.
Now that I have the general rules of play down I am ready to focus more on tactics and the when and where of putting your forces forward.

Do you guys know of any sources which analyse the differences between the various nations? Like, what makes the Brits different than the Yanks, which things should you keep in mind when trying to attack with a given MMC or group of MMC's in relation to the oppositions, etc?

The technical understanding of how to use the rules is settling in my head, but the practical application in relation to conducting tactical operations is a different mater I find...
