Title: Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes
Post by: Shelldrake on April 28, 2014, 01:41:07 PM
I spent a lot of time this past weekend with FELH which I picked up for $10 on a recent GamersGate sale after listening to some grogs' recommendations. Hands down, this is the best $10 that I have spent in a long time. Graphics could be better, especially on the tactical maps, but I am really enjoying the strategic depth and RPG elements in this 4X fantasy game. This game will have a permanent spot on my hard drive.

Yay! Great way to spend ten bucks indeed. :) If only it had multiplayer, eh?

Yeah.. I'm really enjoying as well... getting that darn "One More Turn" affliction coming on.. lol.. working from home today.. just played at lunch.. had trouble shutting off at the end of the hour! Ten dollars well spent!.. I guess a lot of the DLC is on sale for the week, or at least it was when I looked last night..

I haven't played the new AoW3....but aside from that, it is the best game in this genre I have ever played. I keep going back to it again and again.

I just isn't clicking for me and I can't figure out why. I want to like it and, by all accounts, I should like it...but I have to force myself to play. It's a great game though (especially considering where it started)

In the beginning, was like that.. but as I kept playing and getting into the strengths and weaknesses during Tactical Battles, and upgrading units and such.. I got hooked!

Hooray!  Glad you guys are drinking the Kool-aid enjoying the game as well.  ;D

Yeah, Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes remains my fantasy 4x title of choice, at least for the time being.  I like Age of Wonders 3 -- it's a gorgeous game, leader customization is fun, and I think the combat system is one of the better ones I've seen in a while -- but it's still missing something compared to FE:LH.

For me, I think it's that FE:LH has greater overall depth and a better combination of Civ gameplay and RPG elements.  In contrast, AoW3 feels more like "Fantasy Civ Light", with a much heavier emphasis on fighting and war.  (It's probably no accident that the latter's combat system got a lot more love.)

Agreed.  FE:LH is one game I actually wouldn't mind playing online with you guys.

I'd say it's probably gonna mostly boil down to which type of game you want, Gus

If you're looking for "Civilization set in a fantasy world", then Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes is definitely the better fit.  If you're looking more for a fantasy wargame with some Civ elements added in (and cool-looking tactical battles), then Age of Wonders 3 is probably what you want.

Another possible factor is whether you want to play online or not (if you do, then you should get AoW3, as FE:LH is singleplayer only) -- and if not, the quality of the singleplayer opponents.  The AI in FE:LH is generally pretty good at both the strategic and tactical level, while the AI in AoW3 is decent at the strategic level, but rather anemic in battles.

The game itself is solid and a lot of fun. The new leader pack is simply more choices. I'm not sure how it impacts the game so far, if at all, but I'm enjoying plugging in some different leaders and see where the game goes.

There are 10 in Legendary Heroes -- 5 Kingdoms and 5 Empires.

Gus, I would go with FE. I enjoy Endless Legend but it's an alpha. FE is a game with years worth of work and DLC

Right now I would start with FE:LH.... it is cheaper and a good place to start.  I still like AOW3, however I feel it needs some more tweaking and I hope the same mods that were released for the previous version will be released for 3.  Both games will remain on my HD and I like them both for different reasons.

Endless Legend I will purchase, however will wait until it is at least in beta version.  If I were starting out today, I would start with FE:LH and play that for now, is a mature product with several DLCs.... AOW3 will probably have seen some tweaking, mods, and maybe cheaper by the time you get ready to look around.... but I would differently purchase both.

I have never played a AoW game. I bought the super deluxe first iteration of FE but ever even opened the box to oggle the pewter dragon because of the bad reviews it got at the time. Sounds like it's time to return to Stardock and forgive.

In FE are there any fundamental differences between kingsoms and empires? How often does FE go on sale?

The Empire are the bad guys, the Kingdoms the good guys. Basically.

Well, I tried AoW3 and it is nice and shiny but for me I seem to prefer Enchantress. I'm not sure why, it seems deeper and more solid all round.
At the moment I'm playing Master of Orion 3 with the vanilla mod fix and I'm hooked so after I've finished my first game I'm going straight back to Enchatress to check out this new DLC.

Hold on, Gus

You know, I'm not sure why this didn't occur to me before (general addle-mindedness, probably ::) ), but depending on exactly when you purchased that "super deluxe" edition of Elemental, odds are good you're entitled to a free copy of Legendary Heroes already.

I say this, because I did the same thing as you (purchased the deluxe edition of E:WOM, complete with pewter dragon).  I don't remember precisely how it worked now, but because of that -- and because of the first game's poor reception, and Stardock wanting to make things right with those who'd purchased it -- I subsequently received both a free copy of FE and FE:LH when the two later titles were released.

At this relatively late date, I'm not sure what all you'd need to do to get your complimentary copy of FE:LH, Gus, but you're almost certainly entitled to one.  I'm thinking Stardock support could help you out if you contacted them.

I know Stardock finished off the "$20 discount to Legendary Heroes if you previously bought Fallen Enchantress"" offer that had been out there for years.  I think that was late last year, maybe?  I'm not sure that offer is still current, but it might be.  The Stardock forums would tell you.

Gus, one thing I would check right away is your stardock account page and go to downloads.
All your registered products are listed there. Perhaps FE is there already waiting for you to have a go at it.

Very good point Martok!! I dont know why I didnt think of that earlier.

If you have ever played a Stardock game you will have generated a Stardock account for activation. If not I would load up your super deluxe copy of Elemental, create an account and see what happens - maybe FELE will then appear in your account.

^  Well it was more like four years ago -- the original Elemental game was released back in August 2010 -- but yeah, it's already been a while.  :-\

Incidentally, I just fired up FELH for a little bit this morning.  All I did was monkey around with designing/customizing a new Sovereign (in the finest traditions of vanity/ego, I'm trying to model one after myself :P )...and I had a blast doing it.  Just that aspect alone could almost be a mini-game in itself.

It does look great. Right now if there are just too many things missing that look like they do one thing during the game but really aren't. buildings so don't do anything...things like that. couple more patches on my fired it up. It's in great shape for an alpha though and I can easily see it becoming might go-to "fantasy" 4X

If I bought all the DLC on sale from GG, would it go into affect immediately, or not till the next 'new' game?

I'm near the end of my first game.. so I can wait on the DLC

Are some better than others? Are they worth grabbing for 2.50 a piece?

I bought the Dead World, the Quest pack, and the Loot pack.   i think the loot pack and the quest pack are pretty good for the price as they add more goodies and more things to do.  The Dead World adds a new race which adds a few new wrinkles.  Their forces are annoying with their spells and special attacks, but easy to slap around.

I am likely going to sound stupid, but what the heck...when I look around in discussions related to this game, it seems people indicate it lacks an "end game" or the "end game" is buggy, etc.

What exactly are they referring too about the "end game"????

Only couple days left in the sale so really trying to see if I should go for it...

I haven't had any issues with the end game.  I've won a few different types of victory conditions and haven't noticed any bugs.  I can see how play balance might be an issue as you tend to end up with ridiculously powerful armies that wipe the map with whatever they encounter but that's only if you try to drag the game out.

So basically they are implying it becomes sometimes too easy or unbalanced because of everything you can build up until that point?  I guess I can live with that if its my side that has the large army and killing everyone else:)

I think so.  I haven't played a whole lot of the game though so others might know more.  I played it regularly for about a month or so and enjoyed it but I've moved on to other titles.

I really want to like LH, but I don't. I hate that no matter what setting I change, I always end up with strong world monsters surrounding my starting area. Ruins my enjoyment when I throw 2-3 armies at them and they all get wiped out. All while the AI is expanding like rabbits.

^Having played many games, I can say honestly that I've not had that happen but rarely. Usually the wanderers aren't that difficult early in the game. The more deadly creatures in lairs? Part of the key is not expanding your borders near enough to trigger them until you have high enough level heroes to take them down. With many of the monsters, that starts at level 7 with some decent equipment. Conversely, I've been known to set up an outpost next to a major rival city simply to trigger a monster, knowing that even if my outpost gets taken down their city might be next :) Go go Godzilla!!!

You can use a healing spell or you can leave them idle in your territory. Not sure if they heal faster in a city or outpost or not.

Not positive either, but heroes seem to heal pretty well on their own. You can also feed them or purchase potions/scrolls. Troops? I usually send damaged units to the nearest town, swapping them out with fresh cannon fodder troops when possible.

I just lost 2.5 hours playing my current campaign. I've started to clear out the surrounding hordes. I never realized that those strong/deadly monster never moved unless your ZoC triggered them. Had an uneventful war with the undead faction but they never even sent units my way. I didn't even know where their territory was until after the war was over. In a war with one of the Empires now. Same thing, not an enemy unit in sight. Bringing my armies back towards my capital so I can do a little reorganizing and upgrading, then I'm going to go smash the undead to my south.

You can trade for resources and tech points. The better the other faction likes you, the better your trade prices will go. Besides your standing with your trading partner, they may also place more value on one resource, say horses, than another. Usually what I do is click on whatever they have that I want (usually tech points), see what value they place on what I want, then give them the equivalent in gold, tech points, resources, whatever I can spare that covers the price. Also, if you have enough gold, you can flat buy their tech points for cash, which is a useful way to spend excess gilder   8)

Speaking of diplomacy and trading, couple questions....and some miscellaneous.

1). Does the ai ever initiate trade and diplomacy discussions.  Granted its early, but I haven't been approached by any factions yet.  Just me asking them.

2). How do you get the factions to like you better?  Every time I try diplomacy stuff, seems like it takes a lot to convince them.  Is there things I can do to make their demands seem more reasonable?

3) if an enemy engages you in battle, before the actual battle begins, can you choose to retreat and run away?  Didn't see an option for that.

4). While in tactical battle, any way to retreat instead of being forced to fight to the death of every unit?

1) They approach me all the time, I forget what they offer, but they usually include tribute, doesn't seem tmo do much tome.

2) I'm usually declairing war!  8)

3) Some of them I've had the option to 'cancel', I think that's because my movement brought me onto their tile. I think if they attack, you can't cancel

4) During regular battles I haven't seen away. I got a 'scroll' that says something about leaving the battlefield (but I haven't used it yet, want to save it for a future use - I think scrolls are one time uses).

Oh yeah, other factions do initiate deals and treaty discussions; it just generally takes them a while before they do so.  It probably is indeed because it's early (at least in part) that they haven't done so yet.

Also, they seem to become more interested in talking to you when you have something to trade/sell to them.  So once you begin to accumulate certain resources in quantity (such as iron, horses, etc.), you may find other factions wanting to chat with you more often.  (At least, that's been my experience.)

Even I find this tricky, and there sometimes seems to be a bit of "voodoo" involved at times.  That being said, there's a couple things I've noticed:

1.)  The stronger you are, the better terms you seem to be able to get.

2.)  If you've given a faction favorable deals in the past (rather than just the bare minimum of what is needed for them to accept said deals), they seem to remember that on some level.  ("Hey, he's not just a miserly old *&%*% who constantly pinches his pennies!  Maybe he's not so bad...")

As Tuna mentioned, I believe you can retreat when you're the attacker, but not if you're the defender.

Generally speaking, no you can't.  (Incidentally, this covers one of the main issues I have with combat in this game -- that retreat isn't possible under normal circumstances.)  However, you *can* withdraw from battle if you have a Sovereign or Champion with the "Cautious" trait.  (Personally, I give this to trait to all my custom-designed Sovereigns.)

When you hit "propose trade", on the far right you should see, in order(top to bottom): Gildar, Crystal, Metal, Horses, Wargs, the three various techs, then diplomatic options. Except for diplomacy, you will only see items your potential trading partner has. So if they have no horses, horses won't be on the list. If you're not finding anyone with metal....that's weird. Unless you are early in game and haven't found many other players, of course.

Also, it's strange if you are not finding iron on the board. It's usually as common as any other resource.

I actually found a 'cheat' online by accident. If you make some Militia with the clubs, you can update them to Maces with only a Gilder cost (No Metal).. so it's better than nothing in a pinch!

Ok.. I finally got into trade talks with someone who had metal, and yes it was listed on their side. Resources must just be 'rare' on this map. I'm loving this game!!!.. Question when you re-design Units, is there a way to 'rename' that unit? I create two units (One and Archer, the other a Grunt), but they both auto named to 'knight'.. It's kind of annoying, I wish I could rename my re-designs.. I don't see a spot to do that in the editor, except renaming them after they are created, which would be stupid.

But still, I'm really enjoying this game.. a bargain!

I believe you just highlight the part where they are already named and type in whatever you wish. I know it can be done, which is why I have Undead Dragoons wrecking havoc  8)

Cool that works in the last save dialog!.. Thanks.. I was looking all over for a 'rename' button, should've known it was so simple!  8)

Got email today about patch 1.7

Arguably the biggest patch since Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes' release more than a year ago, version 1.7 improves CPU-controlled factions' strategic acumen as well as introducing class-specific items for all five unique hero types, like Commander-only banners that boost the entire army's capabilities.

Download the patch free simply by signing into your Steam client.

Among other things, patch 1.7 includes:

Class-specific items – Commanders lead better than ever with unique banners, mages command the elements with new staves, and more
Significant AI improvements – AI rivals now develop their empires more effectively, for example through upgrading their outposts
Balancing across the board – Unrest modifiers have been tweaked to make sprawling empires less overwhelmingly powerful, and many unit and item stats have changed
Revamped army-strength logic – The method used for calculating army strength has been completely reworked, making evaluating threats easier for human and AI players alike
Much more – see full patch notes below.
Happy conquering!

The Battlegrounds DLC also coincides with the new 1.8 update (http://forums.elementalgame.com/459588).  Time to fire up a new campaign!  O0

Features

Added the ability for monster lairs to pull from a few random configurations of monsters, instead of always having the exact same monsters. (ex: instead of always having 3 Ruffians at a Ruffian Camp, sometimes it will have 3 Ruffians, sometimes 2 Ruffians and a Wolf and sometimes 2 Ruffians and Barren's Witch).

Added the Barrens Witch unit. This unit is a spellcaster who can heal allies, curse enemies and cast contagion. She can often be found aiding bandit camps, or in larger covens in service to demons.

Added the Gilden Lion unit. This unit a strong fire elemental that does fire damage, including burning anyone that attacks it. Like other types of fire elementals it is vulnerable to cold. It shares the speed and high dodge of the cats it resembles, and gets an Attack bonus against Champions. It is typically found in service to Wilding Shamans or around ancient desert temples.

Added the Obsidian Legion unit. These are powerful warriors wield 2 scimitars and gain a charge each time they are struck in battle. If they get at least 5 charges they go into a frenzy that gives them 3 free immediate actions. It is good to kill them quickly. The Obsidian Legion are mercenary's and though they can occasionally be found in their own forts they can also be found working for Syndicate or more powerful organizations.

Added the Malayan Devilman unit. They claim to be ambassadors from a distant continent. They are powerful fire casters, lobbing flame waves and fireballs with equal ease. They have no stronghold of their own but can sometimes be found meeting with other creatures like the Brood, Dark Wizards and Demons. It may be worth skipping a mnster lair if a Malayan Devilman is in their ranks. Or at least be sure to bring some protection against fire magic.

Added the Darkling Overseer unit. Only found in the largest gatherings of Darklings the Overseer grants bonuses to his entire Darkling Army. A horde of Darklings can be a nuicance, headed by an Overseer they are much more dangerous.

Added the Coal Golem unit. Like the rest of his kind this Golem is a sturdy, if not slow, unit. But the fire burning in this one gives him a unique vulnerability. If he is struck 3 or more times he will explode, doing damages to anyone with 2 tiles of him, ally or enemy. They can also breath out a choking gas that blinds and poisons nearby units. Coal Golem's are fairly rare and used by other armies when more reliable golems aren't available (sometimes to their misfortune).

Balance

Stalkers gain +5 Attack vs champions.

Plaguestalkers gain +10 Attack vs champions.

Increased later game tech costs slightly

Increase Improvement costs slightly
