World of Guns: Gun Disassembly

Hardly a game, but it looks like the disassembly and x-ray portions could actually be quite useful, so long as they are accurate and complete.

The shooting range will probably suck, so I don't have my hopes up for any accurate modeling of ballistics and/or penetration. We'll see...

Could be useful depending on how detailed the breakdowns are. I've been having a fair amount of trouble with my HK SL8/G36 conversion as the bolt won't lock back when the last round from a mag is fired. Two different gunsmiths have looked at it and haven't been able to fix it. An interactive 3D model of all the components might help.

As for shooting range and dope charts, have you used an iphone app called Ballistic: Advanced Edition? It's quite good.

I wish you would have talked to me before you bought that SL8. I used to have the USC, but sold it due to the way HK designed it. Total PITA to disassemble and clean. For the kind of money you probably spent on the SL8, you could have gotten some pretty sick hardware instead.

Yup, definitely suffering some buyer's remorse on that one. Especially as I threw in a fair chunk of extra cash to import the dual optic carrying handle and G36 lower. Oh well. On to the next purchase. A Volquartsen .17 WSM.

Yup. I've got 3 spear mags, an HK G36 mag, a MAGPUL G36 mag, and an SL8 mag. I had to use a dremel to grind parts of the G36 and the magpul mags to get them to fit into the magwell but they feed well. The bolt just won't lock back when the final round is fired. If I manually cock the rifle on an empty mag, it will lock back though. I've replaced the bolt catch and locking lever springs (I thought I'd solved it when I found that the tension arm on the bolt catch was misaligned and slotted into the wrong detent but that wasn't it). I've made sure that the bolt is cycling back 100% of the way and pretty much reassembled the guts of the thing. When that didn't work, I brought it into a smith. He farted around for four weeks but couldn't fix it. It's now at a different smith who specializes in building custom firearms. He's going to try to make a longer bolt catch for it. Hopefully that'll work.

I looked into getting an AR magwell adapter for it but from what I've read on various forums, the bolt not locking back is a certainty and an accepted flaw if you go that route.

On impulse, I picked up a Savage Arms 93 chambered in .17 HMR. The .17 is a badass round. I love it. The rifle is a tack driver.

I'm looking forward to it. I'm still in the process of emailing back and forth to Volquartsen. I might go for the .17 HMR instead of the .17 WSM just for the ease of finding ammo but I'm still not decided yet.

I am totally friggin' hooked on this game. The 3D models are spectacular and the parts are modeled extremely well. It is an outstanding way to brush up on your field stripping. It also an excellent resource for learning full armorer's disassembly and assembly. Every piece is there and each one is labeled. There are little mini-games for assembly and disassembly that make it very challenging and enjoyable. Its a great tool to learn and brush up on old techniques without breaking into your safe and getting dirty.

Its free to play, but unlocks are based on experience points which can be difficult to accumulate. I believe you can buy pretty much everything for $49.99.

Anyway, this is well worth it. I've already refreshed myself on the 1911, AK47 and MP5. I'm currently saving up for the M9.

AFAIK there is no option to shoot the guns though.

EDIT: You can fire them but there is no gun range or targets to shoot at.

With the PC version, shooting is pretty cool. There is a cut-away that exposes he internal components so you can see inside the chamber and receiver during firing. On top of this, there is also am x-Ray mode lets you see all the moving pieces and how they interact with each other. You can slow firing down up to 50 times so you can really track each part and see what it does and why it's important. Very cool.
