Which game to go for?

I forgot to mention Phantom Fury, it's on my radar right now.  Modern warfare (not your first preference) but to me its quite appealing.

Yes it does, I also like it covers early war aswell.

  Does the scale of TL (Kampfgruppe) appeal to you more than crewing a single, individual tank? (question for TW)

I have to agree... the more I looked into it, the more it just seemed like TAL on the ground.  I am 50/50 at this point, but I am trying to find something that makes me think this system is unique to TAL.... FC Nimitz is a new twist on the FC system and feels like a different game, Tiger feels like Thunderbolts with tracks.... but Nef could be wrong :-P

i am a big fan of TAL...
but my general recommendation is:  Go to YouTube and watch as many Playthrough (prefered over reviews) of the board games your interested in ...then you will develop a feeling which is most up your alley extrem fast.
the additional benefit: you also knew the rules and the play sequence quite good when the postman delivers the game you picked  ...and watching those 'instructional' videos can be considered already part of the fun/hobby :)

If you are patient, and don't mind a scuffed box, you can occasionally find Ambush at a reasonable price. I picked up a copy (base game) for $30 after waiting patiently and letting a saved eBay search do the work for me. You can create a search for something and then set it to email you when someone lists a copy. Now I just have to work on adding the expansions as they show up for sale.

Yep - I saw some copies of Ambush! on eBay for 20 bucks, but shipping was nearly as much as the price they had it at. Still, that's a great deal compared to some sources.

If anyone has played D Day Omaha and D Day Tarawa which do you think is better?

Ambush! is the best of the games mentioned if you're willing to accept the designer's premise that he's building scenarios from the Combat! television series rather than a SL-type recreation of an historical event.  It's among the best boardgames ever built and I've gone so far as to run it as an f2f RPG for friends with me controlling the Germans.

I really like Warfighter -- minus the silly bullet dice -- and am eager to lay hands on the second wave of stuff, particularly the footlocker and chit trays which, in my own view, should have been included in the original.  Banzai is certainly right about the rulebook, though.  I was probably four games in before I figured out certain key details.

I finally got 'round to buying Patton's Best at GenCon this year and have had a great deal of fun with it.  Graphically it shows its age, but, as I was reared in that era, it's not quite so, erm, offensive?

And to the OT, I would adamantly refuse to choose until threatened with violence and would then probably take Warfighter.  I neglected to mention that it has the benefit of being playable with my son who doesn't know daddy is teaching him vocabulary...you know, like Claymore, and 7.62 mike-mike...
