It would be nice to see a new patch or two, but the game already was in good shape patch-wise. Calvinus did a great job of supporting the game in terms of game play patches. The real problem was always performance, which CE fixed.

So there's really no reason to be concerned about buying CE from a support perspective - it's basically a WWI Gold that actually runs.

I just bought it from greenmangaming.com. I had previously purchased the "gold" version, but I'm all for paying for it again to get an improved version. It's downloading via Steam as I type this.

I am bound and determined to finally play this game. It's taken me 7 years and two purchases, but I think it's time to really dig into it. :)

Given your love of WOFF, Slick, I'd think this would be right up your alley. :)

I likewise had many abortive attempts trying to figure out Gold over the years -- but once it clicked, the game really started to draw me in. The UI remains quirky even under the best circumstances, although Centennial Edition helps a bit in alleviating Gold's often sluggish performance.

Speaking of WOFF, really time I got back into that. I got discouraged by having so many careers end after a couple of missions. But maybe time now to give it another go, and buy the latest update with Zeppelins while I'm at it...

As with some other AGEOD games (i.e., PON), my experience with WWI Gold consisted mainly of loading it up, looking around a bit and wishing it actually worked so I could play it. CE finally allowed me to actually play the game.

Some guy has made some nice mods for CE - a new counter and a new wounded unit icon, for example - that you can find over on the Steam forum if you poke around a bit.

EDIT: One piece of advice: Don't check the "Load entire map at start" box. That was required in Gold to get even passable performance but will crash CE. And CE runs just fine without it.

I found that charging off, away from your flight, can get you killed quickly. So even if you see what looks to be an easy kill nearby that your AI flight leader refuses to go after, there could be a sound reason behind his decision. In such cases where I made a detour to attack what looked to be few enemies there was often another hostile flight nearby that bounced me after I engaged.

Also try to be aware of when they disengage and run from a dogfight. The AI is usually very survival oriented so if a big fight is taking awhile, they tend to run for home at the first chance. Probably for fear of other enemy flights happening by and joining, which is often a possibility especially on the German side of the lines.

As for WWI:CE, I'm sad to hear it isn't going to get more updates. Wasn't it giving people crashes? My biggest complaint left about the original WWI Gold was the sluggishness.

WW1 Gold\ Centennial is still for me the best WW1 wargame, the mechanics work for all stages of the War. Next comes Squad Battles FWW and then JTS France '14. Best game set in WW1..is.. Wings Over Flanders Field Version 2...easy answer:)

I have real dilemma with these games. I watch AARs and think of pulling the trigger, then remember how AGOED interphase really rubbed me the wrong way with PRoN and AJE
