QuoteThe Royal New Zealand Navy has lost its first ship to the sea since World War Two, after one of its vessels ran aground off the coast of Samoa.
The HMNZS Manawanui, a specialist diving and ocean imaging ship, came into trouble about one nautical mile from the island of Upolu on Saturday night local time, while conducting a survey of a reef.
It later caught fire before capsizing.
All 75 people on board were evacuated onto lifeboats and rescued early on Sunday, according to New Zealand's Defence Force said in a statement.

Oops.

Does NZ publish proper investigative reports later?

It's funny, because these days, it seems like in most any Navy, running your ship aground means you'll probably never command again.

Off the top of my head, one guy who ran his Destroyer Escort aground in the 20th century and went on to do OK later in his career was Chester W. Nimitz!

The captain of the NZ$103 million ocean-floor surveying ship (bought used from Norway after they were finished with it), which ran aground on a reef while doing surveys underwater, after which the ship soon caught fire, exploded (apparently?), and sank, has been praised and commended for her success in ordering her crew to get off the ship she was responsible for, before its epic destruction worthy of a movie costing about as much as the ship, killed them all.

So don't worry, she'll be fine. Captain Gray, I mean, not the ship. I honestly don't know what gender Kiwi ships are traditionally called. I'm probably misgendering it because I'm tired, and since everyone got off (more-or-less) safely I think it's kind of funny.

The Navy may be able to get back the vessel's insurance value of just under US$20 million.

NZ Defense Minister says losing a little more than 11% of the New Zealand Navy, especially this way, was not embarrassing (quickly correcting her interviewer about this); but she will be looking into the causes and also how much environmental damage the ship caused to the poor reef. I'm not making this up. Considering how badly the reef bleeped up that ship, I feel like the reef might be able to take care of itself, and may safely be presumed to be possessed by a Samoan deity.
