Herein lies one of the true roots of our inability to understand our past properly: Arrogant insularity disguised as academic specialization, and a refusal to look beyond your particular area of expertise. It was because of that exact reason Göbekli Tepe was first mistaken for a Byzantine cemetery when it was originally discovered in the 1960s; it wouldn't be until the 1990s when the late Klaus Schmidt re-visited the site and realized its monumental importance. It's people like him, and not stubborn naysayers, who will go down in history as the true searchers of Truth.

While Hancock's stuff has some rather extreme hypotheses, I think Hawass' meltdown and subsequent admittance of not even knowing what Gobekli Tepe is points out the major problem in archaeology.  Downright hostile resistance & denouncement of new findings that may upset the apple cart.   

New discoveries in the field, which do just that, often take a generation or multiple generations before getting past the derision and hostility of the general establishment.  Sad to see such things retarded by resistance to change and the nature of human personality.  Skepticism is essential but this is another example of just how hostile that resistance can be in archaeology.  Possibly due to some of the infamous hoaxes in the field, long ago, to Doctors who've been taught and promoted specific theories their whole career worrying about their image.
