Lovecraft ghouls aren't that bad. Sure, they eat dead people and all that, but if you happen to speak their language it's possible to befriend them and even gain their aid against much scarier nasties.

I tend to prefer the Lovecraftian and modern fantasy derivatives that focus on eating the dead (and making people that way) than the old Arabian shapechanging kind, but at least there are better possibilities than zombies.   Some versions have a quick rotting disease or paralytic poison on their claws - I guess to make it more horrible sounding when they're eating paralyzed people alive. 

Would be a treasure trove for the Zombie-focused film-makers &  such.
