The Poles had this same dilemma in WW2. They fought hard and were eventually let down by their allies who were supposed to be fighting to protect Polish sovereignty, and ended up losing their freedom to Stalinist imperialism who were part of the problem to begin with (Ribbentrop-Molotov pact).

But I don't think that the price the Russians paid in the war bought them "freedom" either. Instead they merely retained one brutal totalitarian state (which as Russians was slightly better for them: Gulag vs Concentration Camp/slavery), rather than another (the Nazis). When you consider that in the 1930's alone Stalin is reputed to have killed over 30 million Soviet citizens, either in the Gulag's, or as a matter of intimidating state policy such as, for example the Ukrainian Holodomor, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holodomor it makes Hitler's atrocities - horrible though they were - look rather diminished in scale when you look at the raw numbers of victims. (For the record Mao's government is arguably even worse in this respect! :o). I'm not convinced that any tag that this war between the Nazis and Stalinists was ever anything to do with freedom in the constitutionally liberal sense of the word. Survival maybe?
The most shocking fact about war is that its victims and its instruments are individual human beings, and that these individual beings are condemned by the monstrous conventions of politics to murder or be murdered in quarrels not their own. Aldous Huxley
