The trick is to watch it with the volume turned down and your eyes closed. Very relaxing.

I liked TMP to a point despite its slow pace. The scenes of the refitted Enterprise in space dock does it for me, I guess.

Other than First Contact, the Next Generation movies are ones that I watched once or twice and don't bother to anymore.

I liked TMP as well. Sure it was way to frikkin long and totally derivative of Trek TV episodes, but it was legit sci-fi with some interesting ideas and character arcs.

Most of the older Trek movies skew more towards fantasy than real sci-fi. The reboot movies have been action flicks in a Star Trek wrapper.

Oh I love the first part of TMP as well.
It's epic and could definitely excite almost any trekkie.

The problem is the 2nd half of the movie, which is just plain terrible and boring.

Also it starts the motif and theme throughout the films of Kirk doing everything he can, morally/ethically acceptable or not, to remain the captain of the Enterprise.

Too bad they didn't tie in the TNG movies with the series more. There were a number of storylines that they could either have concluded or showed major events in a movie. The Klingon Civil War comes to mind. An epic battle would have played well in the theaters.
