Was looking for a decent game to take away to work with me (its going to be that kind of job!) - and came across heaps, nay piles of praise for this - lots of people calling it a hidden gem and unsung legend - what say you brother grogs?

I f you read the reviews you probably already know this

The game is great but the GUI is quirky to say the least and the documentation is underwhelming.  That being said I found the following helps me

1. Tone down the sensitivity of the mouse (I have one that you can do that on the fly on the mouse itself).
2. When you get tot he tactical screen in the setup phase highlight an entire organization and then use the line formation to place them in the middle of the map.  This will now help you orient yourself where and how many troops you have.
3. Keep at it.  I think it is a testament that despite the problems it has on the steep learning curve that so many people including myself say the game is well worth it

does mouse sensitivity count for much on a WEGO game?

Con

its more that the camera views are wonky and disorienting.  If you tone down the mouse sensitivity the camera does not fly everywhere and gimbal about like a ferret on acid.

ah thanks for that - still on the fence, reading up, always reading up

I kinda like the game.  There are some extremely irritating things about it (I'll tell you the most annoying for me is that if you pull back too far too fast with the camera in focused cinematic mode {ie the little camera icon that takes you to a specific tank, gun or Squad} you are stuck way up in the sky -- but control (or shift?) numpad 5 gets you down to groundlevel)...really more than anything it is the camera control that seems totally deranged.  But rather than go over all the problematic things, I'll mention what has seemed fun about the game:

1) you can move your troops on a topographic map and not use the camera at all
2) the campaigns have a satisfyingly gamey level to them and are pretty fluid
3) you can do amazingly stupid things by accident and still work out a satisfying resolution
(I air-landed a supply depot in a really dump spot, but it sorta worked out in the end)
4) Valentine tanks are useful!
5) I love the Bren Gun carriers!
6) tanks follow roads and cross bridges without any trouble!

Looks like a major patch is on the way:
