Funny you should post that.  Just checked in at GRRM's LiveJournal page that he updates frequently.  There, he went into the history of Nightflyers from it's publication (and his inner turmoil regarding the original book cover), to the 80's movie (that he had nothing to do with), to the new series on SYFY.  Martin sent the showrunners a letter letting them know that he was available for any questions/input for/from him.  They read the book and have consciously tried to keep close to the source material.  I don't have all of it right, but, when I went to his LiveJournal just now, I didn't see the entry.  Here's the link in case you want to try to look for it yourself:

Yes he is.   He's involved in a small theater where he lives, the Cocteau.  He is also involved with wolves, and their rescue.  He's a diehard Jets and Giants fan.  He is a frequent guest at conventions.  And he is a shameless peddler of his own work and merchandise.  He also goes to great lengths to bring to folks attention writers that he has worked with and those whose work he enjoys.  There's more, but those are the highlights.

I'll forgive him for being a Jets and Giants fan. That's a lot of suffering for one man.
