Well I just recently bought a new gaming rig with Windows 7, and was pretty excited too finally play BF3. Based on the great past experiences I had with BF2 and BF2142 I was really looking forward to it.
Now its not bad as far as shooters go. Still has some great moments that you can only get from playing BF games and their huge maps (such as the nose cone from a fighter jet rolling down a mountain side and stopping right in front of me). But the elimination of the commander role has really destroyed the whole tactics and teamwork portion of the game. Its now just a pretty big free for all, with everyone just trying to get good kill ratios.
In the past the overall commander could look at an overhead map and give orders to individual squads. Drop supplies where needed. Call in mortar strikes. Send drones overhead. Hell you even had actual voice commo within the squads. All that is gone now. Its just a bunch of players running around like chickens with their heads cut off. While the graphics are nice. On the whole it seems like a big step back from what BF2 was.

Oh well, still looking forward to Planetside 2 which hopefully will have some type of system in place to simulate command and control.

Recall many were disappointed when BF2 patch 1.50 broke the commander call artillery and supply drop function.  Lot of BF2 servers rolled back to 1.41 due to this issue.  After hearing this "feature" was removed in BF3, perhaps the 1.50 patch change was by design...

1) Thanks for reminding me of Planetside 2.

2) Frankly, I rather disdain BF3. They've really steered off the direction of the original series and made it pretty much a CoD:MW clone.

I haven't played it for awhile, but I REALLY disagree with #2. The maps are a lot bigger and there's a lot more going on (aircraft, vehicles, etc.). And if teams don't have some semblance of working together, they lose. It's a lot less run & gun.

You just have to look and find good servers. Once you do, you can have a lot of fun with it.

I gave up on it a long time ago.

They removed the most useful features (private servers, bots, etc...), and instead implemented a useless and pointless CoD style SP campaign.

I still remember the pain of searching for hours and hours on end for a working server, only to be kicked out of it, by guys who had taken it over.
Apparently all you needed is 2 guys to find an empty server and claim domain over it by instantly kicking out anyone else you noticed joining.

I just hate Origin.  Worse DD service on the planet.

I never enjoyed playing BF3 alone on a server.  However, when me and a couple of friends got together over voice chat and were all in the same squad it was 100x better.  Using great teamwork we could own a map.

I play BF3 every weekend and it's the only game I play in my console. :P
It's pretty fun and neat.   I never bothered about the commander in the old versions.
Teamplay is still important and it's no COD clone.
