According to the BBC, North Korea appears to be in a period of self-imposed starvation, the likes of which have not been seen since the 1990s.

It is sickening to think that a regime can do this to its people.

Unfortunately, I think that the example of North Korea is not as uncommon as we would like to think.  Modern technology (including, but not limited to computers and weapons) is allowing tyrants to propagandize, control  and enforce these types of tyrannical actions.  The examples of Amin's Uganda, ISIS, Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge demonstrate that we humans have a very thin veneer of civilization that restrains our innate barbarism.

I am so naïve. I always want to think the best of people and technology. Horrible that this is happening at all but by a gov't on its own people is even worse.

Part of my understanding has been driven by my career choices.  Working for a lifetime as a prosecutor, law enforcement and military careers, where you deal with some of the worst in people can also affect you negatively.  A degree of naiveite is good.  Otherwise, there is a danger that you can turn cynical and cold.  I left one job (at considerable financial cost at the time) because it was re-arranging my thinking in a bad way.   To "be wise as serpents, and innocent as doves" remains the best policy.

I agree. But the doves around here aren't really that innocent. They're greedy, lazy, steal other birds food, and fight with each other all the time. But, they do it all while looking innocent so...point taken.

Do not be afraid, and do not be dismayed.  But yes I've always liked that "Be wise as serpents, and innocent as doves."

But when I hear about what some nation leaders and governments do to their own people I'm not surprised.  It all boils down to control.  Was it Kissinger that said "Control the food and you control the population"?

Saw an article summary this morning while taking a microbreak at work, which said the Nork "people" are demanding that North Korea destroy the United States with their nukes, as part of their... 73rd?... anniversary of the Korean War.
