looking at those photos again Im wondering how long shes been out on deployment.
thats a whole lotta rust.  theres even rust on the radar array.

I was a little surprised by the rust on the radar array too.

to my eye that hit is dead center between the radar and the forward vls cells.  my bet is that more money gets spent fixing the radar array then the hull damage.  Im also basing my cost on more then the basic physical repair.  theres the repair to all systems and then 6 months of re-qualifying the the ship as combat capable.  honestly, Im surprised no one was hurt.
Jarhead - Yeah. You're probably right.

and here is my real issue with this.  the USN has pretty much given up on the frigate idea.  with the crap that could or does go down in an area like the Hormuz we need OHP frigates datalinked to platforms like the Burke or Tico.  the cost would be a fraction and not require the price tag of a LCS.  theres a point where bigger isnt better and the OHP has already proven its ability to survive massive damage.

I just rechecked some visuals and that hit is maybe 20 feet behind the forward VLS cells.
its deep and wide (no jokes).  at least 1/3 of that ships combat ability just got screwed.
120 million is now my low end estimate.

Star, I'd love to make a comment, but your drumline of players to the left, is far too distracting.

There have been quite a few members of the Porter family who served in the USN.
A personal favorite is William D. Porter, the son of the Civl War admiral.
I don't know why a destroyer was named for him, maybe they ran out of names.  As far as I have heard he did nothing special, and was never hurt on duty.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_William_D._Porter_(DD-579)

However, it was one of the hardest luck ships in the american navy.  The crew recognized this and her own crew named her, "The Dirty Bill."
The rust on the radar array?  Standard on the Dirty Bill.
A list to port?  Standard on the Dirty Bill.
Try to kill the President?  Dirty Bill.
Sailors can be the most irreverent people on the earth.  After nearly torpedoing the New Jersey, which FDR was on, the Dirty Bill was universally greeted with this message when entering port,  "Don't shoot!  We ARE Republicans."
They thought it would stop when she joined the Pacific Fleet, but the gang was all ready when she sailed into Pearl.
Even in her last engagement, she was The Dirty Bill.
Attacked by a surprise kamikaze, she shot it down, without taking a hit.
However, she then steamed over the sinking plane, and at that exact moment, the plane's bombs went off, under the keel.
Dirty Bill was consistent, if nothing else.

Anyone heard anything new about the Porter and the repair costs? I haven't been able to find anything.

Haven't noted anything in the Help Wanted section of our local news. My guess is they don't want Jim's Body Shop bidding on the process.

No surprises here I guess.

The skipper of the USS Porter has been removed from command after his ship collided with an oil tanker just outside the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

lets have a betting pool as to what this is going to cost.
my moneys on $120 million.

I'm going with $50 mil.

Turns out Star that we were both wildly over in our damage estimates.

http://www.wvec.com/my-city/norfolk/USS-Porter-retuns-to-Norfolk-177359551.html

QuoteThe sailors say it took about two hours to control compartment flooding. Once that danger passed, the ship proceeded to the United Arab Emirates, where it was out of commission for about seven weeks.  It underwent about $700,000 worth of repairs, according to the Virginian-Pilot.

The new captain, Cmdr. Dave Richardson, reports that the Porter is now "fully capable," but, "I wouldn't say it's as good as new.

Granted the 700K was just to get her operational for the trip back to Norfolk. And they're being sneaking about the other repair costs by rolling them into an ABM system upgrade.
