People consistently denigrate China's abilities.  This has been a mistake in the recent past.

Empires are notoriously difficult to manage as they expand, and the New Chinese Empire is no different.

Look at the problems of resentment and protest China is beginning to have with its colonial expansion into Africa, even with small nearby countries like Burma as Chinese self interest and disregard for the local society and the environment start to provide a focus of opposition. Leaving aside sovereignty issues like Tibet, Russian and Vietnamese border areas, Spratley Islands, Senkaku Islands etc, the economic imperialism of China is making few friends amongst the locals. If China pushes too hard what will be the reaction?

I can't help but picture the Chinese Gov't/Business/PLA troika as looking like a bunch of Mob Bosses who attended a Walmart Corporate Retreat after which which the participants got both an Armani Makeover and matching Genghis Khan tattoos.
