Heroes of Annihilated Empires

I know that Anguille and Geek have this game; who else does?  I'd like to talk strategy.  To begin with, I've started a skirmish game as the elves.  My second in fact, because the first game lasted ten minutes and demonstrated the importance of building some military units as soon as possible!  :-[

So I've started again, founding a city ASAP and churning out a load of workers.  I've built a tree that allows me to recruit archers; along with my home building that's ranged and melee covered.  What do I do next?

Also, how do I mine stone - or is that something the elves don't bother with?  I also seem to have deposits of variously coloured crystal lying around that I can't seem to harvest yet; is that something that comes with building upgrades?

Any other beginner tips would be most welcome!

I don't remember where to get it from, but there is a huge awesome mod for this game.

Never seen this one before, Huw. I've just been looking at it on Steam, where is £10. I could be interested if its a good game.

I haven't played enough to form an opinion yet mate, although you can get a boxed copy for about £3 on Amazon last I looked.
