Does anyone play Planetside II

in a recent thread about a drop in/drop out FPS i was pointed at Ghost Recon Online and it is exactly what was required - very fun and easy to lose an hour or two in whilst hiding behind walls and killing baddies in the face

However, i did come across PSII also and although i didnt purchase, the game seems to have a huge following and indeed a very active community over at RPS

Anyone fired it up? Enjoyed it?

I really enjoy Planetside 2.  I don't play it all the time, but its great fun from time to time.  I think I'm on the Connery server as New Conglomerate.  Down with the Vanu!

I play a couple of hours every so often.  I'm quite surprised it doesn't have more of a following here as it is the most tactical online shooter I've played (on pub servers, that is).  The other good thing is that it is F2P and you don't need to spend much money to enjoy it.  I've spent £8 which buys one gun and some change, and "earned" enough credit in-game to add on on some doo-dads.  That's kept me happy enough to put in 120 hours so far.

One downer is that it only really works if you play with a mate or two in TS.  Also the gameplay, though varied, does go through some predictable patterns.  However, the devs are constantly tinkering with it, which does  freshen things up every so often.

In short I'd highly recommend it.  You're in the UK, aren't you 'Geek?  Look for me on Woodman - I play as VS (sorry Republic!)

I played more during the beta, now far far less.

I play every so often and do enjoy it especially if I can link up with people who are working as a team to take objectives.

I played the original Planetside 'back in the day' when I needed a break from WW2OL. Exclusively New Conglomerate, I might add...  ;)

I just have not had the time to get into another persistent Online game the last few years (even WW2OL :'() but IIRC, Planetside does lend itself to short campaigns unlike WW2OL's epic slugfests that could last weeks.

I played it earlier in the year and I wasn't really enthused with it.  First off, it kept CTD for me, every 20 minutes or so.  Now, this was months ago, so I presume they patched it since then, but it still ruined the fun for me.

But the other thing I didn't care for is that even though it looks like a sci-fi version of BF3, it didn't have the intensity.  I love BF3 because the battles are so over the top and frenetic, what with 32v32 teams.  PS2 was quite the opposite.  Even though lots of people  play it, every battle for me seemed to come down to 4v4 or so.  I don't know if this is because the maps are just too large or what, but I never could find more than a few people to play with/against on any given map.  Well, except for a base siege.  In the one base siege I participated in, it was like 20 or so people pouring on fire, while 20 or so defenders hunkered down behind their forcefield.  Booooring. 

Plus, I really missed BF3 dynamic destruction and HD graphics.   8)

To be fair, these experiences are now months old, so a lot could have changed by now.  I've been meaning to jump in again to find out since I really like the Hammer's Slammers idea of this game.  Since it is F2P, I say give it a go.  If you don't like it, you lost nothing.
