What in heck is the army doing with 16" shells?

Delivery could be a problem unless we drop them out of helicopters or something. The Iowas are decommissioned and full of tourists. Hmmm... we may have the makings of a business opportunity here:

"On your next cruise, why settle for just sun and trinkets or the spouting of friendly whales when you can hear the roar of 16 inch guns ripple-firing? Who needs an indoor rock climbing wall when you can take your turn manning a 20mm AA gun! Bring the whole family!"

I'd go on that cruise, and I don't even like to travel.


Years ago, I did some frequent consulting work at Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center in southern Indiana. Aside from the obvious question as to what the Navy was doing with a Surface Warfare Center in Indiana, one of the most interesting things I saw every time I drove through on my way to the work site was stacks - probably 10 to 15 feet high - of 8" cruiser gun barrels sitting on a railroad siding. There were certainly dozens of them there. I later learned that some of them had been used to develop the early GBU-28s for Desert Storm.
