I was looking at getting Dominions3 but it says it's out of stock.  Kind of weird that a download is out of stock.   ???

I guess the distribution deal between the dev (Illwinter) and Shrapnel is over. This was posted on the Illwinter page last month :

Dominions 3 is no longer sold by Shrapnel Games, so it is difficult to buy right now. However we intend to sell Dominions 3 on Desura as soon as possible, hopefully December 1st.

And it is now available on Desura.

Wow - didnt know that... bought it a little while ago when shrapnel had it on sale - think it was about the same price then.

Dominions 3 is an excellent game.  It has the deepest magic and fantasy combat system that I have ever seen.  Well worth the $30 asking price.

I think I've read that it's a bit easy to win against the AI, when I was browsing the feedback on their forums awhile back.  There was a steady cry for AI improvements in an update, at that time.  Between the AI situation, and the fixed screen resolution, I was hesitant - despite how cool it looks.

IIRC I was playing the vanilla v1.0. It didn't even have PBEM as an option, which was added in a later patch.

The great thing about War Plan Pacific is that you can play the entire PTO in one evening. Two to four hours and your game is done. And it feels authentic. Best game out there for the PTO? No. Best game playable in one sitting? Yes.

Oh, it definitely looks enjoyable.  I was just wary of purchasing if I could walk all over the AI, though.  :(  Perhaps they've improved it with updates in the past year or two, however.

That screenshot is misleading.

I got extremely lucky. Most games went until late '44 or early '45. I think I even lost a few. Also, IIRC it was much more difficult to win as Japan.

I'll have to go back and re-read my review, but I don't remember complaining about the AI.

Think of it more along the lines of me being a jerk here and bragging about winning in '42 (though really I'm just curious if anyone has even gotten close to that). I seriously doubt I could ever get that lucky and win that early again, and I wonder if anyone else has ever done so. I saw it as a fluke. One that might bestow bragging rights, but don't mistake it either for a bad AI or any particular brilliance on my part :)

Quite possibly my single favorite game of all time. I certainly got more hours of playtime out of it than any single other game. Between all three ages there are well over 60 factions and in more than a year of steady playing I didn't really "master" more than 3-4! Give me a new one to play and despite my experience it would be like starting over.

You have to play MP, though. The AI is good for learning the basics but is no challenge at all in the long run.

Well that's good news.  I'll have to reconsider purchasing that sucker.  :D
